Sedgwick Generals have

“Land, Ho!”

The sun is beginning to set on

our inaugural voyage as a middle

school, and land is in sight. It

has been an adventurous ride

with a bit of stormy weather here

and there.

Albert Einstein once said, “The

world as we have created it is a

process of our thinking. It cannot

be changed without changing our

thinking.” In that vein, we have

done our best to keep our ship

on course to a new world, know-

ing full well that middle school is

not junior high. We have to be

careful not to turn the ship too

fast, lest we take on water. We

also need to remember to bring

all of our “valuables” with us –

those things we loved about John

Sedgwick Junior High.

Some things need to be left in

the past, others need to be taken

with us and preserved; still oth-

ers need to be tweaked or repur-

posed. One tweak is National

J u n i o r H o n o r S o c i e t y .

Traditionally, John Sedgwick has

recognized all students with a

3.2 grade point average or higher

with a certificate and pins at our

NJHS Awards Nights held every

spring. Because we are now a

middle school, NJHS is no longer

a fit; however, we still believe in

the importance of recognizing our

students for their academic

efforts. Therefore, NJHS will be

replaced by the President’s

Education Awards Program.

Students with a 3.2 GPA or high-

er will receive an Honor Roll cer-

tificate. Students with a 3.5 GPA

or higher will receive a PEAP Ex-

cellence certificate. Students

who have shown tremendous

growth but did not meet all the

criteria for the PEAP Excellence

award will receive the PEAP

Spring 2018 - Page 3

We will honor these stu-

dents during our end-of-year student recognition assem-

bly on Monday, June 18th. Additionally, we have updat-

ed our Honor Roll poster in

our commons, so check it out next time you’re in the

building.

Another tweak will be in

how we register our incom-

ing 6th grade students. Last year, our counselors visited

each of our feeder elemen-tary schools and handed out

registration forms. Students

were instructed to take those forms home and dis-

cuss their options with their pa ren t ( s ) /gua rd ian ( s ) .

Counselors then picked up

completed forms on a return visit to the elementary

schools. This year, we will have a Future 6th Grade

Registration Night on April

18 from 6-7:30 pm at John Sedgwick. On this night, we

will distribute registration forms and describe course

offerings and options to

families who can then dis-cuss, complete the forms,

and turn them in the same night. Our counselors will

visit our feeder elementary schools the following week

to answer any questions and

pick up forms from students whose families were unable

to attend on the 18th.

Finally, this year, we will offer our traditional end-of-

year celebrations. Here is the line-up of events:

June 8: 8th Grade Dance June 14: 8th Grade Wild

Waves, 6th & 7th Grade Carnival

June 15: All School Talent

Show June 18: All School Student

Recognition Assembly, LAST DAY OF SCHOOL – early

dismissal 10:25 am

As this year’s inaugural

voyage comes to a conclu-

sion, I want to express how much I have appreciated

working with our students, staff, and families. Here’s to

a great finish and an even

better voyage next year!

where 30 finalists are select-

ed to attend the nation’s most prestigious STEM mid-

dle school competition later this year.

Calie’s project wasn’t

something you’d see every

day. “It was on space eleva-

tors that would allow people to go to space and see the

world without using a rock-et.” She came up with the

idea when she was doing

research on space travel for

her science class. “I thought

it was really cool as an idea and I got a lot of great fact

on it from my research.”

The second group from our Quest program, attend-

ed Regional History Day contest at Olympic College

on March 19. A total of 32 of the students were selected

to participate in the State

History Day competition at Green River Community Col-

lege on April 21. That’s the most our school district has

ever sent to state! The stu-

dents going to state are Far-ris Hovater, Aidan Haro,

Harvest Savoie, Nick Brim-hall, Ashley Sciocchetti, Kee-

gan Grolley, Reagan Kelly,

Jamie Thoma, Emmy Hickle, Colin Cox, Haylee Cox, Kayla

Hughson, Niall Rosenberg, Anelyn Case, Braden

Gunyan, Odessa Cook and

Quinn Suligoy.
