The first element of the Bentley Regeneration Project is underway, with construction of 46 new apartments due to commence in the coming months.

Property developer Sunshine Developments WA Pty Ltd is undertaking the development of the former Canning Aquatic Site after purchasing the land from the City of Canning in 2015.

The development of the 1.88ha site will be delivered in four stages, and will ultimately include around 460 new apartments (including student accommodation), community and commercial spaces and a range of retail and dining options.

Further stages of development could also include a new state-of-the-art City of Canning Learning Hub facility, which will provide new cultural, community and corporate learning prospects, such as seminars, conferences, training, meetings, exhibitions and other community driven events.

The Sunshine Developments project will be a key component of the Housing Authority’s Bentley Regeneration Project, which is expected to deliver between 1500 and 2000 new homes, across 26.3 hectares, over the next 20 years.

There’s lots happening on the ground in the Bentley Regeneration Project area, with works underway at Brownlie Towers.

Housing has commenced demolition works to remove the deteriorating upper deck of the Brownlie Towers car park. Due to reopen to residents and their visitors in mid-June, parking and new lighting will be available on the existing lower, ground level area.

With demolition of the car park nearing completion, Housing is undertaking electrical works within

the vacant Brownlie Towers shops to enable demolition of the shops to commence in July. Once complete, the site will be fenced off in preparation for future development within the area.

The former Canning Aquatic Centre was successfully demolished in May 2017 to enable development by private developer, Sunshine Developments WA Pty Ltd. Turn to Page 1 for more information on the future plans for this site.

Give your front garden, back yard or balcony some TLC this National Tree Day, Sunday 30 July 2017.

Planting trees around your home can have loads of positive outcomes for your health, and your hip pocket. For instance:

• well-maintained trees and shrubs can increase property value by up to 14%;

• trees properly placed around buildings can reduce air conditioning needs by 30%; and

• two mature trees can supply enough oxygen annually to support a family of four.

You can also get involved in a tree-planting event in your local community. Find out what’s happening in Bentley by visiting www.treeday.planetark.org

Happy planting!

Dig deep this National Tree Day!

Neighbours help make a house a homeThere’s a proverb that says that a good neighbour increases the value of your property...

…and for property inspector and small business owner Jason Cotton, this sentiment rings loud and true.

“We thought we were buying a family home. What we didn’t realise was that we’re buying into a community,” he said.

It was a twist of fate which led Jason, his partner Lisa Ong and their two children, Ruby (7) and Poppy (5), to their spacious four-bedroom family home just outside Housing’s Bentley Regeneration Area. While carrying out a pre-purchase property inspection on the house for a client, he remarked to the real estate agent how nice the house really was.

Just a week later, he received a phone call advising the sale of the house had fallen over, and was offered the chance to put in an offer.

“It was such a spur of the moment purchase,” said Jason. “Lisa and I had spoken a few times about upsizing from our tiny three-by-one in Como, and we spent a long time trying to find the courage to start looking and refinancing.

“When this house came up, we both felt this was the perfect opportunity to purchase our big family home. We’d already done our research and decided that Bentley would be a great place to live and, because we lived locally, we’ve seen all the positive changes that’s been happening across the suburb.”

The young family moved into their house in October 2016 and quickly familiarised themselves with their neighbours, who were just as interested in getting to know them…and learn the plans for their front garden.

“It’s a lovely 1970s property, in beautiful condition,” said Jason. “It’s quite an iconic property in Bentley on quite an iconic street.”

Jason said that his street is dotted with large front gardens with beautifully manicured green lawns, neatly trimmed hedges and shrubs and spectacular roses.

“I had intended to replace the roses with easy-care native plans and shrubs,” confessed Jason, “but after speaking to some of my neighbours, I felt like it was my duty and an honour to keep up one of the remaining gardened front yards.”

He added that while he never had much of a green thumb, his neighbours are always happy to share their gardening tips and advice.

“The neighbours really make the place, and we’re really lucky we have them. They’ve even helped us start developing our green thumbs. We’ve already cleared some space in the backyard to make way for a vegie patch!”

The Cotton family, including their beloved dog Daisy, love their new home in Bentley

Bunning Park has had a makeoverBentley residents and visitors have an even better place to run and play!

Bunning Park has reopened, and now features green open spaces and kick-about areas, new shaded play equipment creating more interesting spaces for children and outdoor exercise equipment to help maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The park also incorporates water saving initiatives to ensure it stays green and leafy with minimal watering, and large trees to help cool the area during summer and provide extra shade.

The Bentley Regeneration Project area is set to bring a number of new residents to

the local area, and the park will provide more recreation and outdoor spaces for residents of all ages to come together and enjoy.

You’ll find Bunning Park on the corner of Bunning Street and Stonehouse Crescent. Gather your family and friends and check it out!
