MORE than a decade of lobbyingwill be rewarded when construc-tion begins on the first of 55 seniorshomes next April at the old Manji-mup Primary School site.
A milestone in the ManjimupSeniors Living Project was reachedwhen it was announced last week asubdivision application had beenlodged with the Western Austra-lian Planning Commission.
Under the project 10-15 homeswill be built a year over four yearsfor people over 55 looking to down-size to more affordable livingarrangements.
Manjimup woman Jill Woollamssaid she first put forward the ideathe site be used for seniors housingabout 12 years ago when the schoolclosed.
“It’s not before time, it’s muchneeded and to see it happen will seemy dream come true,” she said.
“It’ll keep our important seniorsin town, they have a wealth ofknowledge and experience theyshare with the community.”
Mrs Woollams said the homeswere designed for the specificrequirements of seniors.
“People get a lot of choice, itaddresses the criteria that seniorsneed,” she said.
Manjimup shire president PaulOmodei said the timeline announ-cement was some of the best
news he had heard in a long time.“It’s something the community
has been crying out for and it’s inline with our ambitions for theShire of Manjimup Age-FriendlyCommunities Plan,” he said.
“This is about keeping ourseniors close to their families.
“Having the site close to ameni-ties is important, like the WellnessCentre and the CBD, the site is sowell located.”
Department of Communities
acting general manager commer-cial operations Nigel Hindmarshsaid seniors around the State werestruggling to find suitable “down-sizer housing” close to where theylived.
“The Manjimup Seniors Hous-ing Project will address this gap, delivering appropriate housingoptions for seniors at an affordablelevel,” he said.

SPIDER fans enjoyed a treat on Mondaywhen leading Australian arachnologist Rob-ert Whyte visited the Manjimup library.
Mr Whyte spoke to children and adultsabout spiders, how to catch them and the pos-sibility of discovering new species.
“To think there’s only about 4000 disco-vered species when there could be as many asanother 16,000 to be discovered,” he said.
“At your age, you could become spider spe-cialists and get to discover and name newspecies.”
Mr Whyte also talked about his book, AField Guide to Spiders in Australia.
“I didn’t know anything about spiders 10years ago but when I did get interested, I won-dered why there was no big book of spiders,so I wrote it because I’m a writer,” he said.
The event was one of five Mr Whyte has inthe region and also kicked off the school holi-day activities at the Manjimup library.
In addition to a presentation by Mr Whyte, the 11.30am to 2pm event also included a bookdisplay, various spider-themed arts andcrafts, activity sheets, spider-themed cup-cakes and face-painting.
