A milestone in the Manjimup Seniors Living Project was reached when it was announced last week a subdivision application had been lodged with the Western Austra- lian Planning Commission. Under the project 10-15 homes will be built a year over four years for people over 55 looking to down- size to more affordable living arrangements. Manjimup woman Jill Woollams said she first put forward the idea the site be used for seniors housing about 12 years ago when the school closed. “It’s not before time, it’s much needed and to see it happen will see my dream come true,” she said. “It’ll keep our important seniors in town, they have a wealth of knowledge and experience they share with the community.” Mrs Woollams said the homes were designed for the specific requirements of seniors. “People get a lot of choice, it addresses the criteria that seniors need,” she said. Manjimup shire president Paul Omodei said the timeline announ- cement was some of the best news he had heard in a long time. “It’s something the community has been crying out for and it’s in line with our ambitions for the Shire of Manjimup Age-Friendly Communities Plan,” he said. “This is about keeping our seniors close to their families. “Having the site close to ameni- ties is important, like the Wellness Centre and the CBD, the site is so well located.” Department of Communities acting general manager commer- cial operations Nigel Hindmarsh said seniors around the State were struggling to find suitable “down- sizer housing” close to where they lived. “The Manjimup Seniors Hous- ing Project will address this gap, delivering appropriate housing options for seniors at an affordable level,” he said. Mr Whyte spoke to children and adults about spiders, how to catch them and the pos- sibility of discovering new species. “To think there’s only about 4000 disco- vered species when there could be as many as another 16,000 to be discovered,” he said. “At your age, you could become spider spe- cialists and get to discover and name new species.” Mr Whyte also talked about his book, A Field Guide to Spiders in Australia. “I didn’t know anything about spiders 10 years ago but when I did get interested, I won- dered why there was no big book of spiders, so I wrote it because I’m a writer,” he said. The event was one of five Mr Whyte has in the region and also kicked off the school holi- day activities at the Manjimup library. In addition to a presentation by Mr Whyte, the 11.30am to 2pm event also included a book display, various spider-themed arts and crafts, activity sheets, spider-themed cup- cakes and face-painting. SPIDER fans enjoyed a treat on Mondaywhen leading Australian arachnologist Rob-ert Whyte visited the Manjimup library.

Mr Whyte spoke to children and adultsabout spiders, how to catch them and the pos-sibility of discovering new species.
