Moving to XML
The old way:– Edit in Word– Type coding by freelancers– Composition using Miles33 (OASYS) or LaTeX– Proofreading by freelancers
Moving to XML
The new way:– Pre-edit/tag using eXtyles– Edit in Word– Export XML and compose in Typéfi Publish
eXtyles
• Adds meta-data• Cleans up unnecessary formatting• Applies custom Word styles to all elements• Auto-redacts text• Styles/tags elements of references• Matches references to PubMed/CrossRef data• Matches in-text citations to References
Benefits of eXtyles
• Automates routine editorial tasks:– Changing British to American spelling– Formatting units to house style– Changing two to 2– Formatting common terms (p-value to P-value)– Cross checking citations and references
• Allows editors to focus on content, not formatting• Editors don’t have to see the XML (huge bonus!)

Figures
• Figures pre-sized to 21, 33, or 43 picas wide• Processing instruction added to caption
before XML export to select correct Typéfi template
• Minor size adjustments can be made in InDesign
Tables
• Tables may be 21, 33, 43, or 51 picas wide• Processing instruction added to table title
before XML export to select correct Typéfi template
• Custom Java Script facilitates complex data alignment (centered on ± or aligned on decimal) within table columns

Typéfi
Late/minor corrections made in both files (no rebuild)
XML Delivery to Online Hosts
• Some changes required during transition (our NLM XML ≠ HighWire’s NLM XML)
• Took about 6 months to transition 4 journals to XML delivery
• Significant reduction in time from submitting files to HighWire to PDF and full-text publication online (from days to hours)
Benefits of XML Workflow
• Efficient editorial and composition process• Elimination of freelancers (time and cost)• Control over quality and timeliness• Content is in an accessible, searchable, and
reusable platform-neutral format• Reduced time to publication
Next steps
• Using eXtyles in abstract publications• Using eXtyles and Typéfi for non-journal
projects• Adding a content management system• Anticipating new formats (ePub, applications)
and new devices (smartphone, e-reader, iPad)
