Bell-Ringer # 1 8/17 (A) and 8/18 (B)Bowling Vocab• Lane - your assigned play area where your pins are set up,

• Gutter - the “out of bounds” area where your bowling ball will fall in to if you throw too far to the right or left. If you ball goes in to the gutter you have no chance to hit any pins and score points

• Bumpers - pads (often inflatable) that can be put in to the gutters, they allow the bowling balls to bounce off rather than going in to the gutter to ensure the play can earn points

• Foul - when any part of your body crosses the foul line, you do not get credit for that throw

• Pins – the objects at the end of the lane that you are attempting to knock down the ten pins

Bowling Vocab

• Spare – When you knock all ten of the pins down during your two successive throws

• Strike - a bowling throw where you knock over all standing pins in your first throw

• Ten pin – the most common type of bowling game played, because there are ten pins at the end of the lane to knock down• Other forms of bowling:

• “No Tap” – similar to ten-pin, but if you hit 9/10 on first throw it counts as a strike

• “Five Pin” – similar rules, but 5 pins instead of 10 to shorten game (because people wanted to play during their lunch break)
