JANUARY 26
Freestyle snowboarding? Ice climbing? How about
something a bit more extreme? The annual Tough
Guy, an obstacle course covering eight miles of wintry
English countryside. The 4,000 or so participants
warm up with an eight-mile run, then it’s on to the
main events: Murder Mile, Fiery Holes, Barbed Wire
Crawl, The Tiger—a 30-foot wall laced with live
wire—and the ever-popular Viet Cong Saigon
Blackhole Tunnels of Terror. Top it off with a 12-foot
underwater swim in cold, murky water and you’re
finished (figuratively). At least until next year.
T R A N S P O R T A T I O N From London: Virgin Trains offers direct and local rail service to Staffordshire; National Coach operates daily bus service to all major towns.
T R A V E L T I P S
Average temperatures in January: high: 6C (43F); low: 0C (32F).Be sure to bring a warm change of clothing.Always held on the last Sunday in January.

FEBRUARY 3-9
If snow only makes you think of shoveling the
driveway or nailing a neighbor with a well-aimed
spheroid, it’s time to see what real artists can do
with several thousand tons of the white stuff. Every
year, snow sculptors from around the world converge
at the Sapporo Snow Festival, carving replicas of the
Taj Mahal or the Great Pyramids—not to mention the
Mona Lisa and space aliens. Note to PR: Look into
sponsoring a team of these chilly craftsmen to build
a 50-foot statue of Extreme Networks’ aptly named
Alpine™ switch at our next sales meeting.
T R A N S P O R T A T I O N Qantas, Japan Air Lines (JAL), Korean Air (KAL) and others serve Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport.Public transportation: subway, streetcar and bus.

carnaval
Carnaval in South America ranges from the
folksy—think oversized block party—to 24/7
blowouts that take a week and a bottle of aspirin to
recover from. And then there’s Rio: four days of
exhibitionist insanity, punctuated by masked balls,
marching drag queens, street-band competitions and
the Sambodrome—a contest to decide which Samba
school has the wildest costumes. And since Carnaval
coincides with high summer, it’s not exactly for the
overdressed. Nothing can compare with being there,
but Extreme Networks came close when it celebrated
its fifth consecutive Best of Show award.
MARCH 1-4
T R A N S P O R T A T I O N Rio’s International Airport is a major hub; special Carnaval packages are widely available.Ground transportation: yellow cabs, radio taxis, air-conditioned buses, vans and local buses— typically crowded and hot.

The world’s oldest form of bungee jumping
(1,500 years) isn’t done for fun but fertility—of
the newly planted yams. Land diving (naghol) is
more than a colorful name; each participant’s
head is supposed to graze the ground before the
stiff vines tied around each ankle snap him
back. Cut those vines a few inches short and the
diver can break his bones bouncing against the
tower. A few inches too long and…There is
absolutely no truth to the rumor that the Extreme
Networks salesforce performs a similar stunt—
without the vines.

a g h i a e l e n i , g r e ece
Everyone knows that fire safety is a good thing,
but the villagers of this small Macedonian village
have made it an article of faith. To celebrate Saint
Constantine’s conversion to Christianity, the
firewalkers (Anastenarides) dance barefoot across
a pit of burning embers, reportedly without so
much as a blister. The Greek Orthodox Church has a
different take on the holy hotfoot; it excommunicated
the firebrands, but they still continue challenging
the coals. Extreme Networks product engineers who
run into trouble in the test lab also have been known
to do some firewalking of their own.

Crop circles—unexplained patterns that appear in
f ields—occur virtually worldwide. But the heart of
crop-circle country is Wiltshire, which also is home
to Stonehenge and a number of other ancient sites.
Forget “circles”; the mystery markings include spirals,
squares, triangles, pyramids, pentagrams, chained
links, Celtic knots and shapes too complex to convey
in words. Root-cause explanations range from bored
teenagers and local pranksters to UFOs and balls of
light “observed” hovering over the fields. Or is it
merely the Extreme Networks marketing department
trying to come up with a new corporate logo?

wrote about “The Running of the Bulls” and worked
it into his book, The Sun Also Rises. But it’s not
just tourists with too much testosterone or writer-
wannabes who participate in this week-long event;
roughly three-fourths of the 1,000 to 3,000 runners
are Spanish—including locals who haven’t missed
a run in decades. If you really have something to

Once a year, some 25,000 kindred spirits brave the
107-degree temperatures of the Black Rock Desert to
unite in “a temporary community dedicated to radical
self-expression and radical self-reliance,” more
concisely called The Burning Man. The 70-foot-high
center of attention of this week-long gathering—and
his celebrated incineration—is just one of many
charms and attractions. Others include a visit to
Belinda’s Smut Shop and the chance to experience a
full-blown desert dust storm. Given its strong commit-
ment to diversity, Extreme Networks has only one
question: Why isn’t there a Burning Woman festival?

MAY-SEPTEMBER
Every year when the Serengeti’s rainy
season ends, more than a million
wildebeest begin their yearly
migration in search of food. Along the
way, they’re joined by hundreds of
thousands of antelopes, gazelles and
zebras—not to mention hundreds of
hungry lions. Once they reach the end
of the 1,500-mile trek, there are fewer
migratory mammals and plenty of
lions that have put on some pounds.
Of course, the same laws apply to
Extreme Networks’ market segment:

are food.

There’s really only one decision to make about
shark diving—with cage or without. The two-
person galvanized steel cage can be very
comforting when a gang of great whites—
each weighing about as much as your car—
is getting frisky. Then again, if you’re looking
for the ultimate adrenaline rush, you can free
dive, while some psycho in a wet suit slowly
fills the water with chum, just to ensure plenty
of action. Extreme Networks’ advice: It all
depends on whose infrastructure gear you’ve
deployed in your network.

On November 1 and 2 many Mexican men, women
and children observe the Day of The Dead (Día
de los Muertos). They decorate the graves of their
kin with flowers, candles and offerings of
favorite foods and drink; picnic in the cemetery;
and share stories about the dearly departed.
The most memorable celebrations take place on
Janitzio, one of the islands on Lake Patzcuaro,
where thousands of candles illuminate the
cemeteries as participants keep vigil and bells
ring to summon the dead.

Who hasn’t heard the term “whirling dervish”?
But how many of us have actually seen one, not to
mention a roomful of them twirling and whirling in
unison. There’s not much opportunity, actually, since
the Sufi Dervish Order gathers for just one week to
perform its divine dance. Wearing long white robes
and tall red hats, the dervishes turn and spin in
attempt to pull cosmic energy down to Earth while
achieving a state of ecstasy. Undoubtedly an
amazing sight, but anyone interested in energy and
ecstasy should check out a fully loaded Extreme
Networks BlackDiamond® switch.
