A TIRED Tessa Stone says she got theshock of her life when she heard she waspregnant with four babies.

Last week, Stone safely delivered thequadruplet girls via a Caesarean sectionoperation without complications in theMediclinic Kimberley.

Two of the girls are identical.Although at the time of writing the girls

did not have names yet, Stone said theirnames would be a mixture of traditionaland English names.

The babies weigh 945 g, 980 g, 1 kg and1, 2 kg respectively.

She said the babies’ father, Alec Filan-der, was initially shocked pale but hassince recovered and is now very excitedabout his instant family.

Stone also has a seven-year-old son,Lorenzo, from a previous relationship.

“My partner, a policeman at the Galesh-ewe Police Station, is extremely happy. Iam realistic, I realise the babies are nowhere and have to be cared for,” she said.

Stonewill for nowhave to leave her littlebundles of joy in the intensive care unitas they have to stay there for at least amonth.

She found out shewas expecting quadru-plets when she was eight weeks and twodays pregnant.

There are two sets of twins on her moth-er’s side of the family.

Denise Coetzee, the Mediclinic Kimber-ly’s spokesperson, says chances of con-ceiving quads naturally, especially all ofthe same gender, are very slim.

“The girls are very healthy, not one ofthem is on a ventilator.

“Tessa was given medication before heroperation to help develop their little lungs. They are breathing on their own,” shesaid.

Stone’s water broke and she was in theearly stages of labour. The doctors decidedto perform the C-section at 29 weeks.

In the last months of her pregnancy,Stone visited the doctor on a weekly basis.

“I was very uncomfortable over the lastthree weeks, I could no longer sleep atnight,” she said.

She will visit the hospital daily to checkon the babies. I would really love to breast-feed. The doctors will now check if I haveenoughmilk in order for me to feed the ba-bies,” she said.

THE Central University of Technol-ogy (CUT), Free State, and the Per-forming Arts Centre of the FreeState, better known as Pacofs, signed a Memorandum of Under-standing (MoU) on Friday.

“This MoU that we have signed to-day is long overdue. Our collabora-tion with the CUT has always beenthere. It needs to be nurtured.

“We at Pacofs have identified thatwe have a common goal in respectof our collaboration with the CUTand we see our role as reaching out

to artists in the province; nurturingtheir talents.

“The CUT has resources and ca-pacity to enable us to realize thiscommitment,” Teboho Macholo, acting CEO of Pacofs, said.

“The partnership will ensure thatPacofs provides experimentallearning in technical and produc-tion areas for CUT students in engi-neering, communication sciencesand fine art programmes so thatthey graduate.

“As we plan to have our own acad-

emy, we believe the CUT will be ableto assist Pacofs with proper accredi-tation of course content and train-ing programmes for youth in theprovince,” he explained.

“This long standing non-formalpartnership is now formalised andthe two parties will henceforth co-operate by not only exchanging fa-cilities, equipment and services, butalso embarking on joint partnershipdevelopment projects and market-ing ventures,” he said.

Macholo added that CUT students

will be placed at Pacofs for work-in-tegrated learning (WIL) and staffmembers come to the CUTand studyto retool their skills in career-relat-ed programmes.

Dr Pakiso Tondi, deputy regis-trar: Student Services, said that theCUT had such immense talentsamong their students and Pacofs isan important partner to enhancecultural and social programmes oncampus and to help showcase thesetalents.

“The CUT decided to work closely

with industry through the estab-lishment of board committees for itsprogrammes so that students ac-quire sets of skills and practical im-plementation experience to meetthe demand of job sector and indus-try.”

“Break a leg” – the term used inthe theatre world instead of “goodluck” – seems apt at the start of an-other fruitful endeavour undertak-en by like-minded institutions thatlook forward to making a change inthe central region.

CELEBRATING the InternationalDayofFami-lies today is a reminder of the importance offinding ways of strengthening the foundationsof family life. Family is a building block and themost important institution of society.Despite the often delicate and difficult situa-

tion in modern society and the rapidity ofchange, families continue to provide the basicand practical life experience of responsibilityandofvalues suchas loving, caringandsharing. It is stated in the Baha’i Scriptures that: “If

love andagreement aremanifest in a single fam-ily, that family will advance, become illuminedand spiritual; but if enmity and hatred existwithin it, destruction and dispersion are inevi-table”.In order to achieve unity in the family there

is need for nurturing basic spiritual qualities

such as justice, compassion, honesty and trust-worthiness, respect for the rights of each familymember and observing gender equality.A united family life helps to produce happy,

healthy individuals and is the basis of a healthyand peaceful society. Unified and spirituallymotivated families have a direct impact on thewell-being of the community, the nation and ul-timately, thehealthy functioningofhumansoci-ety.Strengthening of the family is necessary for

development of a social order based on justiceand unity. If the vision held by the family is a global one

and one of unity, children from the earliest agelearn the principle, and the reality of the one-ness of humanity.Of course, belief and observance of the princi-

ple of oneness of humanity should start at home.Although one’s familymaybe stable andunit-

ed, excessive and unbalanced attention to thefamily interests, according to the UniversalHouse of Justice, the governing council of theBahá’í international community, “can lead tonarrowsocialviews, one that isultimatelydetri-mental to the broader community”.The Universal House of Justice further ex-

plains: “How many the stable and united fami-lies that, in their intolerance towards one or an-other segment of society, instil in their youngergenerations an ‘us and them’ mentality, heed-less of the fact that the transmission of such poi-sonous attitudes stifles in their children love forhumanity and hampers their sense of justice.“Small wonder if, upon attaining adulthood,

individuals reared in suchanenvironment tendeither to be indifferent to the suffering of othersor to regard violence and oppression as justi-fied—indeed, even to contribute to tyranny.“What is more, in a repressive society, when

facedwith the difficult task of defending humanrights and protecting victims of oppression, such individualsmaywell choose the path of si-lence or tacit collusionwith the oppressor, rath-er than advocating the cause of justice, imped-ing thereby their own spiritual development aswell as the progress of their nation”.Teaching justice and to be fair-minded to the

children in the home is most important to ad-dress this problem. According to the Bahá’íWritings: “Children must be so raised as to re-gardeverysoul, irrespectiveof religion, ethnici-ty, or any other affiliation, as a fellow humanbeingand toholddear thewords [ofBahá’u’lláh]that capture thespirit of theage: ‘The tabernacleof unity hath been raised; regard ye not one an-other as strangers. Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch’.”For feedback please contact mangaung@ba-
