Q&

AWhat is your earliest memory?

I remember being with my dad and mum in our car at

the end of the street we live on, some guy knocked

into us and my dad got out and went mental, police

came, punches were thrown and it resulted in my

mum and I having to walk back to our house, I must

of been about 3 or something, absolute nightmare.

Which living person do you most despise, and

why?

I honestly don’t despise anyone, some people

annoy me and I get frustrated about people that

have a pretentious attitude towards others, if those

characteristics were applied to a single person

combined with them wearing crocs or something I

think that would make me despise them.

If you could have a shoot with any photographer,

who would it be?

I’d love to see how certain photographers work, I love

Stephen Shore’s work and would like to spend a day

with him circa 1972.

Which living person do you most admire

and why?

Sounds lame as fuck but probably my dad, that son

of a bitch has died three times on the op table due

to accidents, got told he would never walk again at

19 and is still around to tell me to give me advice

about my life haha.

What is your greatest fear?

I fucking hate moths, they scare me so much,

I literally run a mile when one the size of a penny

comes at me, that and losing limbs would suck.

Where do you see yourself in ten years time?

If I could do the same shit I do now but get enough

money to live that would be cool.

What are you wearing? What’s your style?

I am currently wearing a pair of undefeated/new

balance 574’s, old as fuck ripped jeans and some

haggard plaid shirt, I feel cool as long as I have a

nice pair of kicks.

Property aside, what’s the most expensive thing

you’ve bought?

I am constantly buying new equipment so it would

have to be photography related, I figure if all else

fails financially I can just rent my equipment out

haha.

Who would play you in a film of your life?

I’d like to think Wesley Snipes, but it would probably

end up being Zach Galifianakis or some shit.

If you could go back in time where would

you go?

Probably back to when I was 13, I used to get

in a lot of trouble when I was younger and I know

it used to upset my folks, I would just go back and

start taking photographs at that age, keep me busy

and out of trouble, plus it would benefit me now

photographically.

What would your super power be?

Invisibility obviously, turn it into a business, ‘invisible

bounty hunter’ I would earn a lot of cake.

What is your most treasured possession?

I don’t so much have treasured possessions but I

have things that I rely on too much, I have this little

contax compact camera that I always carry, I would

be pretty lost without that.

Who or what inspires you?

Friends, family, the usual. I like being surrounded by

people that share the same enthusiasm I do, gets

me motivated.

What is your favourite word and why?

I don’t have favorite words but I have words I say too

much, I swear all the time, bad habit I know but I use

the fact I am from Devon as an excuse.

Page 7: Exposure Magazine

4{ }

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Lady gaga, I don’t give a fuck, she is our generations

Madonna!

What do you consider your greatest

achievement?

Probably picking myself up when I was younger and

deciding I wanted to do something with my life, I felt

like I had no prospects or

aspirations at one point and it wasn’t until I realised

people liked looking at my photographs that I

decided to pursue that.

Which words do you most overuse?

I say ‘like’ after and before everything, must be

Devon too.

It was a series almost

about self discovery, to

appreciate the things

that I have always taken

for granted about living

where I used to live.

Acknowledging my

surroundings and taking

advantage of them when

I have time.

The three shots here by Sam were taken on a

Hasselblad camera; the same type of camera used

by NASA when documenting the Moon Landings.

This image was a commission for

the band The Beacons’ promotional

stuff. They are from devon so it

made sense to have farm animals in

the image!

You can't expect to take a definitive

days, often years.

Q&

AWhat is your earliest memory?

I think it’s probably when I was either 5 or 6 and had

a birthday party at a quad bike track. I was riding

quad bikes around a track and at one point a kid

about twice my age challenged me to a race. Being

eager to prove myself I accepted, and ended up

tipping my quad onto its side round a corner. I didn’t

really know what to do so just sat there on the quad

until someone lifted me off it.

Which living person do you most admire

and why?

Steve Coogan for having created Alan Partridge and

subsequently bringing me endless tears of laughter.

What is your greatest fear?

FAILING AS A PHOTOGRAPHER!

Which living person do you most despise,

and why?

George Bush ranks pretty high.

If you could have a shoot with any photographer,

who would it be?

I would say w, but she never really had “shoots”, her

photos are more on a personal level. I’d therefore

have to opt for a U.K based photographer called Josh

Cole, who photographs the darker side of London.

Where do you see yourself in ten years time?

President of the United States of America. You

heard it here first.

What are you wearing? What’s your style?

Some cargo pants and a striped tee. If I had to

classify my style it’d probably fit into the “streetwear”

category. I buy too many trainers.

Property aside, what’s the most expensive thing

you’ve bought?

Probably my laptop.

Who would play you in a film of your life?

Larry David. The guy’s a genius. I wish I was as

socially ruthless as he is in Curb Your Enthusiasm

and actually had the balls to tell people what they’re

doing wrong.

If you could go back in time where would you

go?

1980’s New York. Everything was crazy back

then, kids were breakdancing on every project

street corner, subway trains were graffed up all

multicoloured. The city was a playground of youth.

Martha Cooper’s photographs illustrate what I mean

really well.

What would your super power be?

The ability to stop time. Imagine the photographic

possibilities!

What is your most treasured possession?

It may sound a bit ridiculous but I love my bike.

Who or what inspires you?

Creatively, I’m really digging Tyrone Lebon’s work

right now.

What is your favourite word and why?

Page 11: Exposure Magazine

a

v

I lean close to a documentary style of

photography, with a keen interest in portraiture,

trying to capture real moments with my camera

for people to observe at a later date.

I’m very much a fan of Magnum, their

photographers are the artists that really got me

interested in photography.

I honestly don’t think I have one

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Mcdonalds. I hate that I eat it.

What do you consider your greatest

achievement?

Managing to do a decent job of learning French

when I moved over to France aged twelve.

Which words do you most overuse?

“Sick”

Where would you most like to be right now?

I’d love to go back to Brazil and see more of Rio de

Janeiro. I’d love to be on the rooftop of the hotel

we stayed in. It had a view over all of Copacobana

beach. If I could, I’d be sitting there, catching up with

my friend Roman, who I originally went there with,

over an Itaipava beer.

If your house was burning down, what two

things would you save and why?

My bike and my computer. I don’t really have

anything of great sentimental value here with me at

University.

What really annoys you?

Too much to list, literally.

If you could bring something extinct back to

life, what would it be, why?

Some sort of Plesiosaur. Those things looked

incredible.

Page 12: Exposure Magazine
Page 13: Exposure Magazine
Page 14: Exposure Magazine

My desire is to preserve the sense of

peoples’ lives, to endow them with the

strength and beauty I see in them. I want

the people in my pictures to stare back.

I want to show exactly what my world

looks like, without glamorization, without

glorification.

AI took inspiration from the film Black

Swan, I like to reference and take influence from films when taking my

photographs. I wanted to do a beauty shoot, but not just look at the make up but focus on the story that would go

along with it.

What is your earliest memory?

One of my earliest memory was of when me and my

family were in spain. We had an apartment out there

so I spent a lot of my childhood there. My clearest

memory is of the bakery that was on the grounds.

I always used to have a chocolate cake with a flake

on the top and the owner of the bakery would always

try and teach me a Spanish word every time I went in

there. I think I was around ¾ years old.

Which living person do you most admire

Michelle Mone is someone which I admire. From

leaving school at 15 she went on to building a multi

million pound lingerie company; ultimo. Successful

people that start from nothing and make it to the top

are always inspiration.

What is your greatest fear?

Being buried alive.

Which living person do you most despise,

and why?

Jeremy kyle, he drives me crazy.he just shouts at

everyone and doesn’t actually solve anything. The

rant could go on!!

If you could have a shoot with any photographer,

who would it be?

As im sure many other people will choose, it has to

be tim walker. His innovative and bold photo shoots

really inspire me. Being able to be part of creating

those incredible photographs and seeing how the

sets are put together would be amazing.

Where do you see yourself in ten years time?

My dream for in ten years time would be working

for a production company in a foreign country,

in the UK. I’ve always wanted to have a career in

which I could see the world.

Well, im currently in joggers and a top. But normally

I tend to have clothes that have skulls on them or

feathers. I would say in quite a surfy girl at heart.

Property aside, what’s the most expensive thing

you’ve bought?

I would have to say it would be my first camera I

bought. It was so long ago now, but I think it was

£500 I saved my pocket money for so long! ha.

Who would play you in a film of your life?

I would want Cameron Diaz to play me. I love her. In

a lot of her film she plays this fun, easygoing, bubbly

party girl. I think that is a good representation of me.

If you could go back in time where would

you go?

I would go back to the 60’s, I don’t have a specific

date, but I would of loved to of lived in the 60’s. It

would be amazing to be a hippy.

What would your super power be?

I would love to be able to morph. So I would look

at someone and then be able to become them. You

could be anyone you wanted to be.

What is your most treasured possession?

I have a few, there is a real pearl I got given in

shanghai, my es paradis vip card haha, and a

necklace that my friend made me when times were

a little hard.

Who or what inspires you?

The beach inspires me. I have been brought up by

the beach, I love it. I don’t think I could ever be too

far away from it. When ever I want to get inspired for

my work or just re -focus it will always be the beach

‘Yogalates’.. Its just fun to say

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Russell Howard… say no more

but I worked hard and it payed off in the end.

Which words do you most overuse?

“Alright presh”

Where would you most like to be right now?

Bondi beach, Australia

If your house was burning down, what two

things would you save and why?

Mobile and laptop. I could replace everything else

using those two things.

What really annoys you?

Rude people, manners cost nothing. It really winds

me up when people don’t say there please and

thank yous.

If you could bring something extinct back to

life, what would it be, why?

Besides having a pet dinosaur, bring back

adidas poppers, they were so cool haha

Page 18: Exposure Magazine

“‘This photograph was the final image of the set to show how the black swan defeated the white swan. I wanted it to be a strong, close cropped shot; that was really striking.’

technical means in photography of

communicating what the world looks

like in a state of heightened awareness.

images attempt to portray my emotion felt at that time and they

sit alongside others that document my trip and subtly express

I’m often inspired by the mundane. There’s a

strange energy in the overlooked. These are things

If you could bring something extinct back to

life, what would it be, why?

Hartebeest as it was the first extinct species I

remember learning about and the reasons for its

extinction seemed unnecessary, I’ve always thought

it was a shame.

I wanted to explore the relationship between notions of the sublime and the land. The work is titled “Breathing Space” as these places allow people to escape from modern life. They appear constant but these seemingly timeless spaces actually show evidence of a subtler history as the cumulative effects of time can be seen through traces and indications left by people who in their appreciation of the landscape also

continue to shape it.

Christine XuanWhat is your earliest memory?

My earliest memory is quite vague but I remember

pushing my younger sister around in a children’s doll

pushchair! I must have been around 4 years old I

think.

Which living person do you most admire and

why?

I really admire film director Duncan Jones because

his films are just absolutely beautiful and interesting

as they explore really unusual concepts.

What is your greatest fear?

Death

Which living person do you most despise, and

why?

I don’t really think despise is the right word, there

are certainly many people who irritate me, mainly for

being famous for not doing anything. It’s a shame

that talented individuals get overlooked.

If you could have a shoot with any photographer,

who would it be?

Solve Sundsbo, his work is just magical!

Where do you see yourself in ten years time?

I’ll hopefully be a successful photographer!

What are you wearing? What’s your style?

I don’t really think I have a style to be honest, I

just wear whatever I feel comfortable in. I can’t live

without my wedge heels though.

Property aside, what’s the most expensive thing

you’ve bought?

It would have to be my Canon camera.

Who would play you in a film of your life?

I can’t for the life of me think of anyone, I’d be

flattered with whoever really.

you go?

To my summer holiday when I was 11 as it was

then that I picked up a camera for the first time and

started experimenting with taking photographs.

What would your super power be?

I’m not quite sure really, maybe the ability to read

people’s thoughts?

What is your most treasured possession?

A beautiful ring my boyfriend gave to me for our 5

year anniversary.

Who or what inspires you?

I’m inspired a lot by the wonderful work of Alfred

Hitchcock. The way he uses lighting and camera

angles to create the perfect mood is just amazing!

What is your favourite word and why?

I don’t think I have a favourite word, haha!

What do you consider your

greatest achievement?

Probably getting my work published in a few

magazines (print and online) and also getting an

agent just this past summer!

Which words do you most overuse?

Obnoxious and ridiculous!

Where would you most like to be right now?

Home with my family as I haven’t seen them for a

few months!

If your house was burning down, what two

things would you save and why?

That’s difficult! I would have to say my ring and

external hard drive as my ring means so much to me

and my HDD because it has all of my photographic

work on it which I would lose if I left it in the

hypothetically burning house!

we wanted to push my fashion photograph so experimented with some unusual make up and styling. Conveniently it had snowed outside a few days previously so was perfect to offset the black styling and strong make up. This is one of the series of photographs that I am most proud of as I feel it is quite strong and represents my style the best, which is soft and strong at the same time but

very feminine.

Photography has always reminded

me of the second child.. trying to

prove itself. The fact that it wasn’t

really considered an art.. that it was

considered a craft.. has trapped

almost every serious photographer.

Where do you see yourself in ten years time?

Hopefully in a job doing something artistic and

creative, with a little online business selling some

of my work as prints

What are you wearing? What’s your style?

Im currently wearing a pair of jeans and a hoody,

I would say my style is pretty standard, skatey but

fashionable, ofcourse!

Property aside, what’s the most expensive thing

you’ve bought?

It would have to be my camera, along with the

equiptment

Who would play you in a film of your life?

Owen Wilson

If you could go back in time where would you

go?

Back to America on holiday

To fly, wherever and whenever you like

Winning the best handwriting award in year 6 was a

special moment!

I like to try and capture the mood of the environment that I am photographing. Colour is very important to me as it helps the viewer connect with

the image.
