18TH ANNUAL PISTAHAN PARADE AND FESTIVAL | AUGUST 13-14, 2011

FILIPINO AMERICAN ARTS EXPOSITION PRESENTS

Message from the Hermana Mayor I am honored to be your 2011 Hermana Mayor. It is with great pleasure that

I welcome you all to our 18th Annual Pistahan Parade and Festival to celebrate our Heritage and Heroes.

This year’s celebration is especially momentous since it is the 150th birthday of Dr. Jose Rizal, our national hero. As we remember and honor his legacy, we also honor and thank the modern heroes and heroines that live among us: those who unselfishly help others, those who inspire morally-based greatness, those who truly advocate for social progress and improvement of human condition, and those who, particularly to our Filipino community, have helped propel and propagate our culture and heritage. Let us also honor the members of the Armed Forces who died in combat and those who continue to risk their lives in the name of peace and freedom.

Our world today is experiencing monumental changes that globalization and technological advancement generate, yet at the same time, it is undeniable that we are faced with real and looming threats posed by global warming, economic volatility, and terrorism. It’s a double-edge sword: great opportunities lie ahead of us and great challenges stand in the way. This weekend is a great

Welcome to the Pistahan Parade and BEST-tival!

Pistahan is the annual gathering of Filipinos and Filipino Americans in the San Francisco Bay Area created to celebrate our rich Philippine heritage and traditions. It is truly a labor of LOVE by the members of the Filipino American Arts Exposition (FAAE), an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that contributes to the artistic and cultural pride of the Filipino community through its promotion of Filipino art, music, film and dance.

To commemorate the 150th birthday of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, our theme this year “Celebrating Heritage and Heroes.” Dr. Jose Rizal was a versatile genius; he was an architect, businessman, artist, economist, novelist, inventor, musician, naturalist, sociologist and more. Most of all, he is a patriot whose lifework continue to be an inspiration to many Filipinos.

Dr. Rizal once said, “He who doesn’t know how to look back at where he came from will never get to his destination.” His timeless message reminds us that we must cherish and celebrate our heritage.

Through this Pistahan, we wish to honor the heroes of the past, the heroes of the present and the everyday heroes who inspire us to keep pushing forward.

I personally would like to thank our many sponsors who have committed to supporting us even through these difficult economic times, especially ABS-CBN/ The Filipino Channel, AsianWeek Foundation, MJM Management and Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. The Pistahan would not be possible without their unwavering support!

We also appreciate the sponsorship of AT&T, PG&E, Ramar Foods, Kaiser Permanente, US Bank, Wells Fargo and all the rest. Their continued support allows us to keep Pistahan FREE for the enjoyment of the entire community.

I want to acknowledge the performing artists, emcees and talent that have worked so hard and make sacrifices to get to Pistahan. We are honored to have them perform on our stages. Thank you to all of the vendors and exhibitors who come back year after year to support our festival.

And finally, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the members of the Pistahan Planning Committee (the Dream Team) and the 200-strong Pistahan volunteers – you are all super heroes in my book! Thank you for your passion, dedication and Bayanihan spirit in making this year’s Pistahan the BEST ever!

Maraming Salamat Po! AL S. PEREZ

opportunity for us to celebrate as one community. We have lots of blessings to thank for and a lot to be proud of. Our culture, our freedom, our community and personal achievements are reasons to celebrate.

It is therefore fitting to thank the visionaries who made the Pistahan Parade and Festival a reality and as an inspiring San Francisco landmark. THANK YOU for organizing this annual event showcasing our culture, our inventions, our food, our music, and our dances. As we celebrate, we spread our goodwill and allow our diverse San Francisco society a unique and exciting experience of catching a glimpse of our beautiful heritage.

Mabuhay ang Pistahan Parade and Festival! Long live one and all!

Message from the Consul GeneralI send warm greetings to the Filipino American Arts Exposition as it celebrates its 18th Annual Pistahan

Parade and Festival on 13-14 August 2011.

The Pistahan has evolved into one of the most enduring, well-attended and much awaited events of the Filipinos in the entire United States. It has become part of the celebrations of the Filipino Americans in the Bay Area in very much the same way the Fiesta is an indispensable part of Filipino culture.

This year’s theme “Celebrating Heritage and Heroes” is most appropriate as we celebrate the 150th

birth anniversary of our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. He was a polymath, a “renaissance man” and a man of the world. Like those who came after Dr. Rizal and enlightened by his example, many of our fellow Filipinos have reached out and established themselves in almost all points in the world. In the United States, the Filipino American community has emerged and continues to earn its rightful place in all aspects of American society.

Indeed, with the Pistahan the Filipino American community celebrates the entire colorful mosaic of Filipino artistry and ingenuity, as it showcases the richness and diversity of Filipino and Filipino American music, dance, cuisine and the community’s achievements in its adopted homeland of America.

I congratulate the FAAE officers, and Board Members for their dedication in keeping the flame of Pistahan alive and burning in the Bay Area. I likewise thank all the sponsors and supporters, performers and all the participants who have made the Pistahan the shining success that it has become.

Mabuhay!

MARCIANO A. PAYNOR, JR.Consul General

09EIGHTEEN YEARS OF CELEBRATING CULTURE AND COMMUNITY.

2011 parade community grand marshal2011 parade celebrity grand marshal

Music, dancing, and laughter are secrets for staying young. Those are blessings shared by of our Philippine Legend, Queen of Rock

and Roll, Mother of Asia’s Soul Diva, none other than our own 2011 Parade Celebrity Grand Marshal – Elizabeth Ramsey.

With a career of nearly 54 years in showbiz, Ms. Ramsey remains amaranthine and unfading as she approached 80 years young by the end of this year. Nothing is diminished about her. Frizzy haired, dressed in three-inch heels, blessed with a youthful 18-year-old girlish figure, she walks with supreme confidence like a ramp model, totally oblivious to the stares by admirers which is similar to reactions given to Prince and Lady Gaga. She is a blend of the two icons getting the combined reaction of shock and awe.

Born in Negros Occidental from a Jamaican father and Filipino mother, Ramsey is well-known for her Visayan-accented dialogues, whether in English or Tagalog. From her father, she learned to be disciplined. Her body is fit and trim. With stomach in, chest out, chin up, ramrod straight back, she portrays a military bearing, something her father demanded from all his children. That’s why she is sometimes called the Queen of the Jungle. From her Visayan mother, she learned to sing, dance and pray religiously.

For more than 40 years, Ramsey has lovingly collected over 100 religious images of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Jesus and Saints along with another 100 images of the Santo Niño. All in all, she has over 200 in her altars, each with its bouquet of flowers. “I’m not religious,” she says. “I just love Jesus who is my hero.” Ageless, feisty, spunky, courageous and outrageous are words that fit Ms. Ramsey to a tee.

After winning in Student Canteen in her youth, Ramsey was immediately hired by Manila Grand Opera where she met my Soprano singing aunt, Mercy Oria Villegas. Ramsey worked seven glorious years with my aunt and other legends like Pilita Corales at the Clover Theater. Ramsey became known as the Queen of Rock and Roll, a title given to her by Press members.

Later, she traveled abroad. She did her share of performing for US soldiers in

Who is the highest ranking and most senior elected Fil-Am leader in the San Francisco Bay Area? ‘Tis our four-term outright

elected Milpitas Mayor and our own 2011 Parade Community Grand Marshal – Joe Esteves.

Born and raised in Dagupan City, Pangasinan – bangus (milk fish) capital of the Philippines – Mayor Esteves values humility and kindness. He considers his father as his hero.

His father, Atty. Pastor M. Esteves, Sr. served underprivileged families of fishermen, farmers and merchants; he helped them get justice without much compensation. He did not get rich like other lawyers who charged exorbitantly. He barely charged his clients. He is altruistic and had a good heart. He puts people first before profits. So the family lived a simple life and remained humble. His father had decent earnings that allowed Joe and his siblings to finish college.

Dignity, integrity, competence, diligence, education, career, success, service and kindness are Filipino traits that Mayor Esteves learned while growing up. Educational and career success brought honor and respect to Joe and Esteves family. Thus, he pursued college degrees in Civil Engineering (BSCE) and in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) and master’s degree in business administration (MBA). He attended Communicating for High Impact Academy at UCLA Anderson School of Management and learned Leadership in the 21st Century at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Mayor Esteves served for many years as a volunteer and leader in various civic, non-profit, community, church and business organizations before becoming involved in public service in the City of Milpitas. He has won numerous awards. He is a ‘Milpitas Citizen of the Year’ awardee, a Character awardee, and excellence in public service awardee.

In the City of Milpitas, he has focused on building structures for the future like the new Senior Center, the Milpitas downtown development, the new Milpitas Library building which was completed, on budget and on schedule during his mayoral term. He has strongly advocated for ethics in public service, transparent government, and financial accountability. He ensures that diversity is embraced in Milpitas in its true sense: with respect for and involve-ment of each and every citizen regardless of their origin or stature.

Mayor Esteves was elected number one to the Milpitas City Council in 1998 and has won four mayoral elections with landslide victories. He has always campaigned for fiscal responsibility and for maximizing City services. He is known and admired for his fiscal responsibility, integrity, accessibility, and his commitment to listening and commu-nicating. He is not a professional politician nor committed to special interests.

Mayor Esteves and his wife, Susan, are the proud parents of Irene, a university graduate student. They have lived in Milpitas for 32 years. They remain active in Church, community, and civic clubs and has received numerous awards for his services year round, not just at election time.

Mayor Esteves was voted “Best Elected Official” in 2002-2008, yearly for 6 years while serving as Mayor. He lives by the MAXIM – “You can only be who you really are when you are proud of your origin and pursue excellence, not for yourself, but, for your community.”

Let’s celebrate our Heritage and Heroes! Let’s join Mayor Esteves on Saturday morning as he kicks off our 18th Annual Pistahan as our 2011 Parade Community Grand Marshal. Mabuhay!

American bases worldwide. She even got to sing on the USS Enterprise for wounded American Vietnam Vets. As early as 1961, she began performing in Las Vegas and all over the USA. “I met Sammy Davis and he called me his Baby! He said this lady is full of gold! I was the first Filipino to become a star in the Philippine Festival Las Vegas production of Steve Parker, the husband of Hollywood actress Shirley McClaine. This was at the Jones Hotel. Harry Belafonte, when he heard that I was Jamaican, had an extra show just for me. He said he would have a special show just for me and even had us fetched on a stretched limo.”

Everyone knows her. If not, everyone knows of her. She is the mother of Jaya, the Soul Diva of the Philippines. In fact, my first chance meeting with Ms. Ramsey was at the end of Jaya’s concert in June 2002 at Manila Peninsula Hotel. I met her again as she performed with Jaya and Randy Santiago in 2010 at Cache Creek in Northern California. On Saturday, August 13, 2011, we get a chance to see her. She starts our Parade in the morning and ends our Pistahan stage entertainment in the afternoon.

Ms. Ramsey doesn’t even have to speak. Her countenance is a changing palette of funny faces that can launch a crowd into gales of laughter. Her body is elastic and can shift from one comic pose to another. As one fan raved, just looking at her can make you laugh. That is a compliment to Ms. Ramsey’s innate talent for comedy.

Let’s celebrate our Heritage and Heroes with comedy and laughter! Let’s rock and roll with Elizabeth Ramsey!

Care Giver, Our Unsung Hero

2011 Hermana mayor

SolmANAAY

By Antonio “tony” VillegAs, Jr.

As we honor in 2011 our Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, on the 150th anniversary of his birth in 1861, we may wonder and

ponder: “What is a HERO?” One may define it as bayani (hero) of

the bayan (country) who promotes bayanihan (esprit de corps or team spirit). In other words, a hero is someone who gives the best of himself and brings out the best in others through the effort of a T.E.A.M. Together Everyone Achieves More. One person who gives the best of herself and brings out the best in others is our 2011 Hermana Mayor for this 18th Annual Pistahan Festival and Parade: Soledad “Sol” Manaay.

OUR UNSUNG HEROManaay is our unsung hero. She is

one who is shy, meek, and humble. She is so bashful and reluctant of being our Hermana Mayor. She declined our invitation a number of times but eventually accepted after our persistent requests. She is truly deserving of the honor for she does heroic acts without fanfare or adulation.

She answers the plea inscribed under the Statute of Liberty – “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breath free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest tossed, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” She cares for the weak, the sick, the old and the weary. She cares for our elders and assists them in preserving their dignity.

She is founder and Chief Executive Officer of her own company that trains and assigns health care professionals to aid our elderly by providing them quality care and assisted living in their own homes without displacing them from their family and loved ones. She founded her company after her mother, Angelina, died in 2006 which is ten years before her father, Lucerio, died in 1996. Her company is a tribute to both her parents for the way they cared for her… with their loving hearts and their helping hands. Thus, she aptly named her company – CARE ON CALL, INC.

HERITAGE Manaay is full-blooded Filipino

with father from Luzon and mother from Visayas region. She values our Filipino traits of adaptability, creativity, and resiliency.

Filipinos are adaptable since we welcome new experiences and changes in our mindset and lifestyle to blend with our new environment. No wonder ten percent of our people live outside the Philippines as immigrants or overseas workers.

Filipinos are creative since we find new ways of getting things done from the scraps left to us. This is why we have colorfully, decorated Jeepneys from rubbishes left by US military in the Philippines at the end of WW2.

Filipinos are resilient since we can and do bounce back from any calamity like Mount Pinatubo eruption in early 1990s or the recent Typhoon Ondoy. We manage to survive even though enslaved under the tyranny of Spanish Conquistadors (1521-1898), American Colonizers (1898-1941), Japanese Imperialists (1941-1945), and even that of our own kind under Marcos dictatorship (1972-1986).

To be adaptable and resilient, Manaay remains fluent in Ilonggo, Tagalog, and English. She was born in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental, Philippines. During her formative years, she moved to Manila with her parents, six brothers and one sister.

She attended Madeleine Academy High School. She graduated with a BS degree in Foreign Service from University of Manila. She started working for Philippine Ministry of Information under Minister Tatad and was assigned as Media Analyst to San Francisco Consul-General Alconcel Trinidad.

During the 1980s, she moved to Hawaii where she studied and received her second baccalaureate degree, BS in International Relations, from Hawaii Pacific University. After graduation, she worked and co-founded the Filipino American Couriers Association. Several years after, she migrated back to continental USA. She now lives in Redwood City, California. In 2009, she returned for the 55th anniversary banquet of Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii where she was recognized for establishing the oldest professional organization she started over 20 years ago.

With passion for lifelong learning, she pursued her postgraduate studies at Chicago School of Professional Psychology. In 2010, she received her Master’s degree in Gerentology. She plans to do more graduate work.

11EIGHTEEN YEARS OF CELEBRATING CULTURE AND COMMUNITY.

HEROWhen asked who is her HERO, Ms.

Manaay immediately answered “My Mother,” Angelina Muesco Manaay, who is a devoted, loving wife to her father, Lucerio. She said that her nanay (mother) was ahead of her time. She assumed the role of household breadwinner while her tatay (father), Lucerio, a Judo and Arnis Master, did pro bono work to help protect their community by teaching martial arts to neighbors.

Her parents practiced positive parenting. They did not yell at them or inflict corporal punishment as they raised their eight children. She remembers how her mom reserves time to speak privately with each of them to teach right from wrong and to uphold values of honesty, patience, diligence, kindness, and having a “word of honor.”

Manaay raised her only child, Solitaire, in the same way with support, trust, affection, and respect (STAR). And now, she’s proud of how Solitaire turned out. Her daughter is a shining star, beaming pianist and viola musician, smiling graduate of San Francisco State University and California School of Integral Studies, an aspiring child-development specialist, and a budding film director.

Like her mother who is a multi-talented entertainer with their traveling family Zarsuela – Manaay

has great talent in music… composing it, singing it, playing it, and dancing to it. She also has the added talent of composing, writing, editing, and publishing her work such as a children’s book entitled the “Magic Pond” which is available for purchase at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. She does not allow her achievements to spoil her as her mom taught her – to be kind, generous, humble, sweet, calm, value family and friends, be helpful to others and be thankful to the Lord. Like her mom, wealth to her does not mean anything if it is not shared, so she shares what she has. Five of her nieces and nephews have graduated from college. Thanks to her for her kindness and sharing!

Manaay remembers her mom telling her that she can be anything in life, regardless of her gender or the color of her skin, so long as she puts her mind (ambition) and body (hard work) to get the proper education and experience to make it happen.

HOPEWith ambition and hardwork,

Manaay hopes and strives to continuously improve upon herself so she can better serve others. She is currently pursuing a PhD in International Psychology. She wants to do her doctoral dissertation in Positive Parenting.

She hopes to share her PhD research findings so we can all become better parents, have happier children, and take better care of our elders while conserving our ecosystem. Our children are our hope for a better future, so we must protect them from harm. Our elders have shaped the way we are, so we should thank and take care of them.

MAXIMManaay lives by the famous adage

by our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal who said:

“Ang tao’ng hindi marunong

lumingon sa kanya’ng pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa kanya’ng paroroonan.”

In other words – “The person who doesn’t look back to his/her origins will not reach his/her destination.”

Having come from a humble beginning, she feels extremely fortunate to be where she is right now. She is glad that she has not lost sight of who she was and where she came from. Her life is made meaningful by her friendships, by revisiting her origins, by positive support she gives to relatives, and by reconnecting with childhood friends and neighbors who have expressed joy over the fact that she has not forgotten them. As the saying goes, “you can take the girl out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the girl.” Country girl plans to return and retire in the country of her birth. She already acquired property in the province named after our national hero, Rizal.

Like Rizal, Manaay is also a hero. She is our unsung hero who wishes to sing. She composed our Pistahan Theme Song as her gift to us. Like her song, we end by chanting to all our heroes… Mabuhay! Mabuhay! Mabuhay!

18TH ANNUAL PISTAHAN PARADE AND FESTIVAL | AUGUST 13-14, 2011

FILIPINO AMERICAN ARTS EXPOSITION PRESENTS12

It all started in 1992 when a group of artists and community activists wanted to mount an interactive arts exhibition called the I-Hotel/Hansel & Gretel with Capp Street Project.

They approached various members of the San Francisco artistic community.

About the same time, the radical revitalization of a dilapidated 19-block area South of Market Street was then in its finishing stages. In fact, Moscone Center and the Yerba Buena Project -- a mixture of gardens, hotels, museums, shops and restaurants, were completed the following year. But, many Filipino families living in the SoMa district, the hub of Filipino American life in San Francisco since the 1940s, were displaced in the redevelopment effort.

When the directors of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Baraka Sele and Renny Pritikin, heard about Carlos Villa and Lenny Limjoco’s project, they approached the Filipino community. After all, the center’s mission was to showcase the Bay

Area’s cultural diversity through art. Thus the Filipino American Arts Exposition (FAAE) was born, led by community leaders like Luz de Leon, Mauro Tumbokon, Bulletx Marasigan, Oscar Peñaranda and Florence Mendoza.

FAAE staged the 1st Pistahan during Yerba Buena Center’s inaugural 1994 season. It was a cultural event set in the same neighborhood that still bears vestiges of our long-standing presence, with streets named after Philippine national heroes like Mabini, Bonifacio, Lapu-Lapu, Rizal and Tandang Sora.

FAAE’s scope then, while ambitious, was diffused into several programs running simultaneously and organized by a handful of over-worked volunteers. So Pistahan was a relatively modest event compared to the already-established Fiesta Filipina although its smattering of colorful arts pavilions and the support of local talents like Danongan Kalanduyan and Teatro ng Tanan gracing the stage

preceding of things to come. In 1996, Pistahan garnered greater

recognition and the attention of the mainstream press such as the SF Chronicle’s Datebook and the Examiner when no less than then Mayor Willie Brown served as Grand Marshal of the parade and Daly City Mayor Michael Guingona was Hermano Mayor.

On its 10th year, with Epee Rafanan as Parade & Festival Director, Pistahan finally found its niche in the Bay Area’s tapestry of festivals, receiving the support of not just the arts community but heavy hitters from the

The History of Pistahan Festival and ParadeBy Christina Dunham

corporate world like ABS-CBN, Wells Fargo Bank, Sony Metreon and PG&E as well. As Dennis Normandy, Hermano Mayor in 2003, aptly puts it, “Pistahan organizers and supporters have succeeded admirably in using entertainment to educate.”

Today, Pistahan is a staple of the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival Series which runs from May through October alongside other San Francisco cultural traditions like the Chinese New Year’s Parade, Carnaval and Cinco de Mayo. Indeed, the list of Hermana & Hermano Mayors read like the Who’s Who of the Filipino American community.

With Al Perez now at the helm, FAAE continues to create a festival that truly celebrates Filipino American culture and pride. The two-day event boasts an audience of 60,000, with attendees, performers and sponsors from all over the world with events like the Adobo Cook-off, Balut-Eating Contest, Kulinarya and the Filipino American Jazz Festival taking a life of their own.

Come and celebrate our Heritage and Heroes!

Over 150 community leaders, volunteers and supporters came to the swanky Carnelian by the Bay on July 20, 2011 to

participate in the kick off to our 18th Annual Pistahan Parade and Festival schedule on the weekend of August 13-14, which hosted by the Filipino American Arts Exposition. Dignitaries were recognized and volunteers were treated to food and special entertainment.

During the event, Deputy Consul General Wilfredo Santos of the Philippine Consulate in San Francisco was presented with a special recognition for his outstanding community service. He has always been present at many Fil-Am activities throughout the Bay Area.

Vice President of the Board of Education Hydra Mendoza, the first Filipina elected official in San

Francisco, energized the crowd as she shared her experience of participating in the Pistahan Parade. “There is nothing like riding down Market Street in a convertible, without a seatbelt!” laughed Mendoza, who previously served as Parade Grand Marshall. “Bring all your friends to see the

excitement of the Pistahan Parade on Saturday, August 13!” she reminded everyone.

Attendees were treated to a special zumba performance. They remember their wonderful experience last year and anticipate another chance to participate this year in the popular

dance/fitness craze at the Dance Pavilion located above the water falls of Yerba Buena Gardens.

Guests enjoyed various dining treats – pancit, fried chicken, egg rolls, fried rice, pita bread and humus, and mango and ube ice cream desserts.

The kick-off event was sponsored by Eric Chung, VuQo Vodka, Pearl Parmelee and Mama Sitas, Ben Acorda and Heavenly Ice Cream, and Bolani & Sauce Co.

Upcoming 18th Annual Pistahan Festival event will be held again at Yerba Buena Gardens along Mission street between 3rd and 4th streets. Enjoy our San Francisco International Festival of Filipino Culture and Cuisine on August 13-14, 2011!

Are you an experienced sommelier or just a connoisseur? Well, look no further and come to Pistahan’s wine tasting to

savor award-winning Merlots from Corte Riva (www.corteriva.com)!

While Corte Riva is the first Filipino winery ever to be established in Napa Valley, its Merlot ($50/bottle) has been winning awards since 2003 and its Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Mabuhay ($65/bottle) is its best seller. In fact, the authoritative magazine Wine Spectator described blue-blooded Ilocanos Lawrence Cortez (from Cagayan Valley) and Romel Rivera (from La Union) as rising stars in the world of winemaking.

Both Cortez and Rivera worked in the Napa vineyards for more than 25 years. While doing all the hard jobs in the wineries, they became good friends and labored hard until they learned the tricks of the trade. In time, Romel and Lawrence began

experimenting with wine recipes. Using their intimate knowledge of

grapes and wine production, they have since created their own line. They named their wine concoctions Corté Riva, paying homage to the winemakers Cortez and Rivera. And, its Merlot has been recognized not only by Wine Spectator but by Hi-time Wine Cellars and Wine Advocate, too.

Let’s celebrate our Heritage and Heroes! Taste these Filipino wines at B restaurant atop the Yerba Buena Gardens waterfalls. Cheers!

Is there any reason to condemn Jose Antonio Vargas for his honesty?

By now you know Vargas as the poster boy for all undocumented

immigrants when his life story was reported in New York Times and ABC Nightline News. In his story, I wondered why “undocumented” is the operative descriptive word and not “illegal.”

The report describes Vargas’ odyssey as a 12-year-old boy from the Philippines, sent off to live in California with his grandparents. Unbeknownst to Vargas, his identification documents were fake, a fact he discovered only in high school. His life could only be “normal” if he could secure official documents like a driver’s license. Meanwhile, Vargas did “illegal” things like graduate from college, work, pay taxes and earn a spot on a Pulitzer Prize winning team of Washington Post.

Is this really the kind of person we want to deport? There are 11 million undocumented immigrants in America. Some people may resent that. I don’t. If anyone has a right to dislike Vargas, my family certainly does. We don’t.

My relatives played by the rules and waited for years to come to America. They aged while waiting. Many lived within earshot of Pistahan’s celebratory noise.

They started their American lives in SoMa like my cousin Aida, who is now a teacher at Bessie Carmichael, and my younger cousins who graduated from high school and college here. They are the new Guillermo immigrants, my heroes.

VARGAS IS A VICTIM. Not only is Vargas a victim of America’s broken immigration system, he’s a victim of his own parents’ zeal to give their son a real opportunity in life. I admire Vargas’ courage. He was not only the hero for undocumented aliens but also for gay immigrants! Before his story was published, he was double-closeted.

But the reaction from other journalists surprised me. Some view Vargas with cynicism. “It’s almost impossible not to be affected by deeply disturbing self-promotion disguised as sacrifice,” wrote Esther Cepada of the Washington Post Writer’s Group. She further condemns Vargas as bringing dishonor to the media profession, having “humiliated” his respected colleagues whom he deceived. Why so paranoid, Cepeda?

I wish Vargas well on his struggles. Is he a hero? I would say so! He’s certainly brave to put everything – his reputation, career, life – on the line. If his story can change some people’s views about the plight of the undocumented, then Vargas is a hero.

One thing Vargas is not is an “illegal.” He cannot be an “illegal” which is an adverb or adjective, not a noun. He is a human being who innocently entered USA as a minor and who believed his legal documents were authentic. Vargas’ tale reminds us that we should not demonize victims caught in the immigration bureaucracy. Some are innocent and even become award-winning journalists who deserve our cheers, not our jeers. Vargas is our hero. Mabuhay ka Vargas! Mabuhay!

AMOK

My Immigrant Cousins Are Heroes, But So Is VargasBy Emil GuillErmo

A comparison of all Philippine national heroes from Lapu-Lapu to Cory Aquino will yield two heroes uncannily similar in how

they lived and in how they died - Dr. Jose Rizal and Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr.

Both came from similar class backgrounds - their families were landed gentry; both studied at the elite Ateneo school, traveled extensively, wrote prolifically and returned to the Philippines despite warnings that they faced certain death upon setting foot on their native soil.

Both were tried for treason on trumped-up charges by kangaroo courts. Both were executed by tyrants who feared their return. Both their deaths sparked revolutions that overthrew the tyrannies that caused their martyrdoms.

More than other heroes, Rizal and Aquino fit the textbook mythological model of a “tragic hero” – one who was born of privilege, imbued with heroic qualities and fated to endure great suffering.

Why did Dr. Jose Rizal in 1892 and Ninoy Aquino in 1983 return to the Philippines knowing of the certain

tragedy that awaited them upon their arrival? Was it Fate or Free Will?

Dr. Jose Rizal lived and studied in Europe for almost a decade and then moved to Hongkong in 1891. He financed the migration to Hongkong of his parents and siblings. While Rizal was overjoyed to be reunited with his family, he was deeply dismayed by the factionalism and lack of unity that plagued the Filipino movement in Europe.

Ninoy Aquino was imprisoned for almost eight years when he suffered two severe heart attacks within a week of each other in May 1980. Because of fear

of negative publicity, Imelda Marcos ordered him released and was quickly flown to the U.S. After heart surgery, Aquino spent three years in the U.S. It was when the political situation in the Philippines deteriorated in 1983 that Aquino felt it imperative to return to convince Marcos to restore democracy “before extremists take over and make such a change impossible.”

Like Aquino, Rizal feared the very revolution his own writings had inspired. Seeking to avert a bloody revolution, both freely chose to return back to the Philippines to personally make the case

for a non-violent reform alternative. But their pleas fell on deaf ears.

Rizal was executed in Luneta (now Rizal Park) on December 30, 1896 by a firing squad of 20 Filipino soldiers. Ninoy was killed at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport (now the Ninoy Aquino International Airport) on August 21, 1983 by an execution squad of Filipino soldiers. Both executions were on the orders of Malacanang Palace.

Rizal’s execution triggered the Katipunan revolution that led to the Filipino people’s overthrow of Spanish rule. Ninoy’s execution sparked the People Power revolution that led to the ouster of the Marcoses from the Philippines.

In their cosmic conflicts against their fates, by their stirring words and by their heroic deeds, Dr. Jose Rizal and Ninoy Aquino transformed the Philippines and the Filipino people.

RAMAR FooDS INTERNATIoNAl

Ramar Foods International started out as Orientex in 1969 selling Filipino handicrafts. Within a few years, Orientex soon imported various frozen and dry goods alongside the traditional handicrafts. Then, with the growing Asian market, demand for high quality, authentic, ethnic foods increased. So it was from there that the idea to use Philippine fruits and turn them into a premium ice cream arose. Thus, Magnolia Ice Cream was reborn in America.

Over the years, Ramar Foods implemented a gradual transition from being an importer to a manufacturer of Filipino and Asian meats, eggrolls, and desserts. It now has a USDA-certified meat manufacturing and ice cream plant in Pittsburg, California.

18TH ANNUAL PISTAHAN PARADE AND FESTIVAL | AUGUST 13-14, 2011

FILIPINO AMERICAN ARTS EXPOSITION PRESENTS24

The social media team for Pistahan is on a mission to make this year’s festival and parade the best one ever! In a nutshell, we are aiming

to create tremendous buzz leading up to and throughout the festival and parade weekend, garner more support than ever, meet new people, make new friends and basically break attendance records. How are we going to do that? How else but through social media! This year, we will be running our first ever contests that will leverage three major social media platforms, Foursquare, Twitter and of course, Facebook. Very exciting!

The Foursquare initiative will encourage attendance and viral broadcasts by engaging users to utilize the Foursquare app on their smartphones by simply “checking in” at different Pistahan venues that will be set up beforehand. When the users check in to each pavilion and the festival, they may then head to the social media booth to redeem prizes from Simply Calamansi, LBC and other amazing sponsors. They should hurry though as a limited number

of prizes will be available each day. The Twitter and Facebook contests will

leverage this year’s theme of “Celebrating Heritage and Heroes” by encouraging users to fan and follow Pistahan on Facebook and Twitter, respectively. Our fans and followers will be encouraged to broadcast their favorite Filipino heroes by posting entries in video, photo or comment formats. The winners will be selected by a panel of Pistahan volunteers who will pick four video winners, four photo winners, and two commentary winners. Winning submissions will reflect creativity, thought, personality and/or humor.

Additionally, a major part of this social media effort is to increase our fans and followers bases so two winners (one for Twitter and one for Facebook) will be randomly selected once we reach our objective of 500 Twitter followers and 1000 Facebook fans.

Prizes for the Heroes contest will include gift certificates from Karmaloop.com (an online streetwear retailer that carries over 400 brands for Guys and Ladies including brands owned or partially owned by Pinoys such as Crooks & Castles, Creative Recreation, Jeepney, Hellz Bellz & LRG), signed items from legendary turntablist DJ Qbert, signed baseball from former San Francisco Giants first baseman J.T. Snow, framed photo art by Jong Arceja, custom designed items by Mariluz Design, a Heavenly Ice Cream package for a party of ten, and a gift certificate for fine Filipino dining at Intramuros Restaurant in South San Francisco.

Creativity Pavilion will present both the past and present, something ancient and modern, something of tradition

and something of new creation. We present Baybayin by a Hero and Kidrobot for SuperHero.

One of the key elements of our Creativity Pavilion is the continuing tradition of presenting and educating everyone in the ancient Philippine script Baybayin, also known as alibata. In keeping with the theme of this years Pistahan, Heritage and

Heroes, we will be presenting samples of the Baybayin writing of Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. His Baybayin writing samples are few and very rare. We will demonstrate this ancient script which originated from Sanskrit in India. Then, we will follow with training workshops and Q&A sessions on creating Philippine calligraphic artform.

Our Creativity Pavilion will also host its first ever exhibit of custom Kidrobot “MUNNY” vinyl toys. Sixteen artists will participate and customized their toys to represent our

favorite Hero or SuperHero. The toys have been set with Philippine theme. This is a historic event. It is the first time such an exhibit will be produced in a festival setting. Artist-completed Kidrobot toys will be available for sale. You can also buy blank faced Kidrobot toys. Artists will be available to demonstrate and coach you as make your own art design of your favorite Hero’s or SuperHero’s image. Tools such as sharpie markers and coloring sheets will be also available for you to immerse yourself in this widely popular and emerging art medium.

Join us at our Creativity Pavilion! Let’s celebrate our Heritage and Heroes and our SuperHeroes!

ABC: Adobo, Balut, Calamansi anyone?By Joanne Boston

Filipino Cuisine is a melting pot of several flavors from China, Spain, and America. Some of the aromas may seem foreign yet they conjure nostalgic memories of home. Come to the Culinary Pavilion and experience Filipino flavors in a whole new way!

Are you familiar with the unique Filipino dish adobo? At 12:30 pm on Saturday, August 13, witness the 7th Annual Adobo Cook-Off sponsored by Ramar Foods! Adobo is a delicacy dish with mixture of vinegar, garlic and soy sauce simmered down with your favorite meat like pork or chicken and with your vegetable like green beans or eggplant. Various cooks with family secret recipes will compete for the Best Adobo Dish. Who will win? Sample the epicurean delights. Celebrity judges and the public, including you, get to vote for the winner.

Are you familiar with calamansi? At 1:30 pm on Saturday, watch the calamansi cooking demo presented by Pacific Fruit & Beverage Co. Our little tart fruit is not just for squeezing to make juice or to add flavor to pancit. It has appeared at various Bay Area restaurants as desserts, cocktails, and marinades. Learn the various uses of calamansi!

If you are brave, have a sweet craving and wish to be the next Juan Matakaw, sign up by 11 am for our Saturday 3 pm

Heavenly Tropical Ice Cream eating contest at our pavilion and for our Sunday 1:30 pm Balut eating contest sponsored by Mama Sita at the

Bayanihan Stage. Be a contestant or simply cheer for your favorite gourmands. You may be one chosen to experience brain freeze for gorging delicious mango or ube ice. Or you can be challenged to eat as fast as you can three fertilized duck eggs - white, yolk and, yes, baby duckling embryo. Winners gain bragging rights for the whole year as Pistahan Champions.

Want to relish other dishes? Learn from culinary demonstrations of “inihaw” or Filipino barbecue using Mama Sita special mixes. Like adobo, we have many variations of inihaw ranging from your famous BBQ pork or chicken on a stick to the notorious “isaw,” combo of intestine and chicken feet. And what goes well with these grilled meats?

“Atchara” of course! Attend our cooking demo by Pinex on Sunday noon to learn how you can make your own pickled papaya condiment

Lastly, should you find yourself hungry from gazing at the delectable-looking displays, come at the end of the day to taste our Heavenly Tropical Ice Creams and get some recipes from our host, Pearl Parmelee of Mama Sita’s USA. Complete our survey and receive a Mama Sita’s seasoning packet as well as enter our hourly raffles. We will keep giving complimentary giveaways till we run out, so make your way to the exhibit early to get your share!

Food is truly part of our Filipino-American heritage. Let us celebrate the wonderful flavors of our culture and unite as one community. Pinoy gatherings culminate with our food!

Great things are hap-pening at the Art Pavilion this year.

Want to meet Filipino artists from Academy Award®-winning PIXAR ANIMATION STUDIOS? Ronnie Del Carmen and Ricky Nierva will be there to meet you as they showcase their award-winning masterpieces in a joint presentation on Saturday, August 13, from 1:30-2:30 pm. Ad- mission is free but space is very limited so do come early.

RONNIE DEL CARMEN joined Pixar Animation Studios in the summer of 2000 during the production of Finding Nemo as a story supervisor on the film. He did production design on the Academy Award®-nominated short film, ONE MAN BAND and story work on Oscar®-winning, RATATOUILLE. Ronnie was story supervisor on another Academy Award® winner and Best Picture nominee, UP, and is currently working on a future Pixar project. His penultimate wit and humor not only as an artist but as a comic book creator is best exemplified by how he describes himself: Prior to working for Pixar, he worked at Dreamworks and Warner Bros., all in the capacity of story artist, story supervisor, character designer, illustrator and all around pest. Over the years, he has been dabbling in comics including DC and Dark Horse. He self-publishes his own comic book, PAPER BISCUIT. He is loved by his wife and kids and is refrained from having too much peanut butter.

Equally successful, RICKY NIERVA is an Annie Award®-winning artist and is currently a production designer for PIXAR where his credits include design work for MONSTERS, INC; TOY STORY 2; FINDING NEMO and UP. He is also the illustrator of the children’s book “‘M’ for Monster.”Ronnie worked for Turner in L.A. before coming to Pixar. When not dreaming up new character designs, he enjoys triathlons, eating ice cream and playing the ukulele. He went to UCSD to follow in his brother’s footsteps and become a doctor. But, a friend convinced him to go to Cal Arts and he did. After all, he did his

Other participating artists include MARLON SAGANA INGRAM, ROBBY LEE, TIM GUITARTE, PAOLO SALAZAR, NICK MARANANG, LEE ABELLANA and REGGIE MACABASCO.

MARLON SAGANA INGRAM’s work is a seamless fusion of raw materials, aerosol street tactics of thickly layered ideoscapes and dreamlike phantasmagoria; ROBBY LEE creates fantasy scenes and creatures; TIM GUITARTE integrates the underground with the traditional approach in his portraits; PAOLO SALAZAR does public murals and private commission work; NICK MARANANG creates landscapes and portraits; LEE ABELLANA does live art whose style is a mix of unpopular pop surrealism and urban street art; and, REGGIE MACABASCO paints landscapes and scenes in realistic and modernistic styles.

JUDY ROMANENKOV once again coordinates the Art Pavilion this year, aside from being one of the exhibitors. Her work includes landscapes, scenes and portraits in realistic, impressionistic and modernistic styles.

There will be live painting demonstrations by PAOLO SALAZAR, NICK MARANANG AND LEE ABELLANA during the 2-day event..

Paintings from the artists will be available for sale. Part of the proceeds will benefit Pistahan.

Heritage Pavilion gleams in the limelight. After all, the theme of the 18th Annual Pistahan Parade and Festival is

“Celebrating Heroes & Heritage.” Thus, the pavilion will not just be a mini Filipino museum displaying Philippine antiques, artifacts and material art from institutions and local collectors but also will showcase our history, heritage and class heroes.

Filipino American Arts Expo (FAAE) and our sponsors honor our heroes this year and for good reason. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of José Rizal, a national hero of the Philippines.

Dr. Jose Rizal was a Filipino nationalist, a medical doctor and an accomplished writer. He was considered a polymath, a prodigy in several fields of study. He completed two doctorate degrees, one in medicine and the other in philosophy. He was a noted ophthalmologist, painter, sculptor, journalist, poet, novelist, prolific writer, educator, farmer, historian and playwright. He

America once again aided the Philippines from foreign rule when General MacArthur led U.S. military and Filipino armed forces to drive out Japanese invaders which ended WW2 on 14th of August in 1945.

So on August 13-14, 2011, it is a propos that we honor both our heroes which include Jose Rizal and the Filipino American World War 2 Veterans. Dr. Jose Rizal’s advocacy for civil disobedience preceded Mahatma Gandhi of India and Martin Luther King, Jr. of America. Filipino Veterans fought side by side with Americans to liberate Philippines from tyranny of foreign invaders during WW2. They all gave the ultimate sacrifice as encapsulated in our Philippine national anthem’s last verse – “ang mamatay ng dahil sa iyo.”

While celebrating our heroes, the pavilion will also celebrate our heritage by showcasing our Philippine tradition. This includes artifacts, pictures, and garments of our Muslim kababayans. Muslim dances like singkil and musical instruments like kulintang will be presented.

dabbled with varying expertise in architecture, economics, ethnology, anthropology, sociology, cartography, dramatics, martial arts, fencing and pistol shooting. He was a polyglot who speaks, reads, and writes poems and novels in 22 languages. He studied in the Philippines, Spain, Germany and France. He lived in Brussels, he practiced medicine in Hongkong, and he sojourned in our very own City of San Francisco.

Jose Rizal’s various writings including his novella El Filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere (“Don’t touch me!”) idealized the freedom of Filipinos from Spanish rule. Thus, Dr. Rizal was charged with rebellion, sedition and conspiracy to overthrow the Spanish Government. He was imprisoned, exiled and finally

executed by firing squad on December 30, 1896, all at the young age of 35, at the place now known as Luneta park in Manila where his monument is erected. His message of liberty and autonomy resonates beyond his grave with his Ultimo Adios written the night before he died.

Passionate for freedom, Filipinos under Katipunan leaders Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo aided by American forces under Admiral George Dewey fought to rid of the Spaniards. The Philippines declared independence from Spain on June 12, 1898. Dewey’s victory during this Spanish American War on Manila Bay is memorialized in the monument on Union Square in downtown San Francisco. During World War II (WW2),

Located on the second floor esplanade above the Gardens’ waterfall, the Dance Pavilion entices festival attendees to catch the rhythm of Filipino folk dance. From the melodic sounds from the Philippines to the jiving beats of modern day dance halls, this interactive pavilion promises an invigorating and immersive cultural experience.

Filipinos are world-renown as great entertainers and so it is not at all surprising that we have our share of world-class dancers like

Cheryl Burke, Nicole Scherzinger, Jabawokees, Billy Crawford, Gary Valenciano! To this end, our Dance Pavilion Coordinator, Florence Mendoza, and her team will develop and showcase our dancing skills. Dance Pavilion won the most popular pavilion in 2010, and 2011 will even be better. It will be the best that we ever had throughout the 18 years of Pistahan Festival.

For starters, the Dance Pavilion will include all types of dances. To whet our appetite, the Dance Pavilion crew will give preview performances during the Saturday morning parade along Market street in San Francisco. As parade contingents arrive to their

location at Yerba Buena Gardens, our weekend-long dance program will immediately start!

We will have Open Ballroom Dancing – Tango, Latin and even Line Dancing – performed by The Filipino American Ballroom Dance Club and Chinese American Ballroom Dancers. Then, Folk Dances and Cultural Dances will follow thereafter performed by the Sampaguita Dancers, Ernie Castaneda and SOMA Seniors, Mission District Fil-Am Seniors as well as MNC Seniors. They will demonstrate and teach u how these Folk and Cultural Dances are done.

We will also have Zumba Dance Classes on Saturday and Sunday. Zumba will be led and taught by Andrei Cobbs. Various adult and youth groups will follow to showcase their respective Dougie, Pop, and HipHop skills.

In summary, here is our Dance Pavilion weekend schedule:Saturday, auguSt 1310:00 Open Ballroom, Line Dancing11:00 Folk and Cultural Dancing12:00 Hip-hop, Ballroom, Line1:00 Hip-hop2:00 Zumba Class

To spread awareness of hepatitis B, which affects one in ten Asian and Pacific Islanders, the Pistahan Parade and Festival will feature free hepatitis B

screenings and educational brochures through the courtesy of the Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center.

The screenings will take place in the Health Pavilion from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2011.

Asian Pacific Islanders (APIs) are 100 times more likely to have chronic hepatitis B than Caucasians and have the highest rate of liver cancer of any racial/ethnic group.

Hepatitis B can cause serious illness that may last for months. It can become a chronic illness with increased risk of liver damage and liver cancer. Hepatitis B can potentially lead to liver failure and death, but it is preventable with a simple vaccine series. It is estimated that the API residents make up 34%

EIGHTEEN YEARS OF CELEBRATING CULTURE AND COMMUNITY.

This year’s Play Pavilion showcases dynamic demonstrations of traditional martial arts as well as fun-filled free

activities for guests.World Team USA will showcase the

multitude of martial disciplines taught and practiced at the school. Headed by Kru Sam Phimsoutham, World Team USA has produced the most amateur and professional champions nationwide in the martial art of Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts.

Some of the notable Filipino American professional and amateur champions from World Team USA are Michael Mananquil, TJ Arcangel and Kevin Arceo. Also featured at World Team USA is the indigenous Pilipino martial art of Eskrima/Serrada as taught by Punong Guro Bob Manalo, Jr. of the International Eskrima/

Serrada Association (IESA). Other schools with various styles of martial arts will also be demonstrating throughout the weekend.

The Play Pavilion will also provide fun-filled games such as hula-hoops and yo-yo’s (“tayob tayok”) throughout the Festival weekend for guests to learn, experience and enjoy. It is noteworthy that a Filipino American, Pedro Flores, opened the Yo-yo Manufacturing Company in Santa Barbara, California in 1928. By 1929, Flores operated two additional yo-yo factories in Los Angeles and Hollywood, employing 600 workers and producing 300,000 units daily (see wikipedia.org).

From combative arts and sports to contemporary games, join us at the Play Pavilion provide ways to interact with history. Our games require no batteries or wi-fi connectivity or

monthly service fees. They are fun and free. They are the sports and games that our heroes used to combat foes and to welcome and entertain friends.

Let’s celebrate our Heritage and Heroes. Come play with us at the Play Pavilion!

In addition, there will be a Hep B contingent in the Pistahan Parade on Saturday, August 13. Be sure to keep an eye out for San Francisco Hep B who will be walking in the parade alongside the Subaru Hep B Mobile vehicle to promote Hep B awareness. The San Francisco Hep B Free Campaign is a city wide effort to screen and vaccinate all Asian and Pacific Islanders.
