Research background
• The University set out to:
– explore the issues and concepts behind developing a toolset to integrate and support personalised portfolios
– investigate the capacity to link and interact with professionally or personally developed competency frameworks
3Change the way you think about Hull | 11 July 2012 |
Research approach
• Explore the direct and indirect user interactions based on user needs
• Identify the technologies, standards and data-types involved in each interaction
• Define the scope for a suitable technology solution - an e-portfolio type platform that could cope with a variety of interaction processes
• Identify approaches to allow sharing of media rich “assets” between users
• Define an approach that could, where appropriate, adopt the use of recognised standards and cloud technology to offer full interoperability
4Change the way you think about Hull | 11 July 2012 |
Research results
• To be successful, the results indicated that:– a “person-centric” environment was required– tools must support an individual’s personal acquisition
and sharing of knowledge and media rich assets– tools must allow acquisition of assets throughout a
user’s lifetime– the user should have full control of securely sharing
and distributing their own personal assets– any developed tools must integrate with and improve
on existing systems for reporting, assessment and collaboration
– any developed tools must remove the traditional ties to institutional, employer-owned or regulatory body based repositories and e-portfolio tools and systems

Conclusions
“By taking personal ownership of all of their own assets, reflections and contributions, and understanding how these link to acquisition of competencies, either professional or personal, it assists the individual in career decisions and allows them to focus their own professional development through collaboration and sharing of assets.”
•In the process the individual is:– Better able to recognise opportunity– More aware of the trends and directions in the
workplace and society– Becomes increasingly effective in the workplace– Able to help, influence and lead others– Confident of their future employability

...but this can only work if the individual has access to their assets throughout their whole learning journey
Traditional e-portfolio model New e-portfolio model
Institutionally owned Personally owned
Very powerful but spanning only a small percentage of the overall learning journey
Cut down and to-the-point functionality but spanning the entire life-long journey
Often complex, with a steep learning curve - especially for casual users
Simple, quick and easy to use - designed for casual / infrequent use
Often a new tool that has to be learntIncorporates existing systems and familiar
tools
Supports export of data but often in “machine readable” formats only
Easily transferable data with user controlled exposure of evidence in readable
formats
Often unclear who “owns” the data within the institutional system
Clear terms of ownership - of the application, the data and the assets
