Dear friends and neighbors,

Staying active is a vital part of our overall health and wellbeing. That can mean different things to different people. To my family stay-

ing active means participating in youth sports leagues, and walking around the neighborhood together in the evenings. For others staying active might mean swimming at the Green Ridge indoor pool, hiking Explore Park’s 14 miles of trails, or taking a craft program at the Bram-bleton Center. Our department plays an important role in the health of thousands of Roanoke County citizens, by providing the facilities and structured environment we need to stay active.

This fall season we’re offering a wide array of events such as the free Wellbeing Fair, the Zombie 5K charity race, and the new SpookyVille family event at Green Ridge. Coming late September, we’re also mak-ing it easier to navigate activities online with a new highly-interactive website. Whether it’s a Roanoke County program or something else, I challenge everyone to find at least one NEW way to be active with your family this season. You may learn that your overall health and happi-ness improves as a result.

Our Wellbeing Fair is among the largest FREE health expos in the Roanoke Valley!

Your health is important! At Green Ridge Recreation Center, we strive to provide individuals and families with the tools and

environment they need to reach their health goals. We do this by making healthier living fun, rather than a chore. Whether you’re shooting hoops, playing air hockey, splashing in the current river or simply working out - Green Ridge is full of amenities designed to keep your family moving and active.

Green Ridge is a place for EVERYONE, where visitors can choose between flexible daily admission passes and monthly member-ship. As a Roanoke County facility, we have an obligation to reach out to a diverse group of health seekers in everything we do. For the past three years, we have hosted a Wellbeing Fair during the month of November. This is a exciting event that allows us to fur-ther our mission of encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

The Wellbeing Fair has gotten bigger, every year. On Thursday, November 13 there are more reasons than ever before to attend. Here are the top seven:

1It’s Free - The Wellbeing Fair is among the Roanoke Valley’s largest FREE health expos. With over 30 vendors, you’ve got

nothing to lose!

2 Assessments on Site - Get a snapshot of your health with a free body fat assessment and a free blood pressure check.

Each of these services would typically come with a fee at a clinic or health club.

3Kids Fitness Information - New this year, we’ve added new demonstrations and vendors focused on youth fitness. Find

out how to get them away from the video games!

4Healthy Eating Habits - Enjoy cooking demonstrations to help you improve the way you eat. There will be samples and

tastings from vendors including organic food, smoothies, vitamins and more.

5 Door Prizes and Raffle - Just by walking in the door you’re eligible for fantastic prizes, including Green Ridge Recreation

Center passes, promotional items and goods or services donated by our vendors.

6 Group Exercise Demonstrations - Still not sure if you want to become a member? Take part in free group exercise demon-

strations all evening and find out which style of workout is right for you.

7 Whole Body Health - Healthy living goes beyond just eating and working out. It’s a full body affair! Talk to a chiropractor,

health care professional, or massage therapist to create a lifestyle plan that meets your needs.

According to Wellness Center Supervisor Chelsea Arner, this year’s event will introduce you to professionals representing all ends of the health spectrum. “One of the most important things in life is to be healthy; not just in a physical way, but also mentally and emotionally. We hope you’ll join us for this informative, fun event! Participate in a group exercise class. Learn how to make healthy snacks, talk with local chiropractors, get a free body fat assess-ment, learn about supplements, protein shakes, herbal remedies, and more. ”

Start your healthier lifestyle today! Then mark your calendars to visit Green Ridge on Thursday, November 13 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

Indoor AquaticsOur indoor aquatics area is designed with family fun in mind. Whether you’re looking for a place to swim, splash, slide, or relax, there’s something for everyone. We also offer aquatics exercise classes and group or private lessons. The pool is kept at a com-fortable 84 degrees, so it’s never too chilly to swim. The kids will love our 2.5 story slide and aquatic play area. Adults won’t want to miss the hot tub. Due to programming and lifeguard schedules, portions of the indoor pool may be closed each day. View our schedule at GreenRidgeRecreationCenter.com.

GymnasiumThe gym features two full-size basketball courts with hardwood floors that can be divided with a center curtain. The facility is fully air conditioned, with six basketball backboards and two volleyball courts. Ping pong is also available in the gym during scheduled hours. Due to programming and large sporting events, portions of the gym may be closed. See schedule for details.

Wellness CenterWe offer a wide range of cardiovascular equipment and free weights, plus a full-body circuit of strength training equipment from some of the best names in the industry like: TechnoGym, Pre-cor, Hammer Strength, Free Motion, Atlantis, Cybex and Hampton. Green Ridge Amenities

Each runner or team is given a flag football type belt with 3 flags. The flags are the runners’ “lives.” Runners will complete a 5K run/walk, while “zombies” try to take their flags. In order to have “survived,” runners must cross the finish line with at least one flag. Zombies will be stationed throughout the course and may only go a short distance to “chase” a runner. Each runner that

“survives” with at least one flag will be entered into a drawing for prizes.

LIFE

Bucket ListTop Family Activities this Fall Did you know that you can access the Roanoke River from the trails

within Explore Park? Add a family fishing trip to your bucket list.

I’m a list kind of gal. More now than ever as I try to manage a fam-ily and all of our comings and goings. As I sat down to plan out

the last few weeks of my family’s summer, I noticed how much I had missed. I never made it to the beach. I never got to Splash Valley with my kids. I totally forgot about all the play dates we had planned with friends. I missed the strawberry festival, the wing festival and so many others - has anyone else noticed the exorbitant amount of festivals Roanoke has every summer? I had become so busy with everyday life that I forgot to celebrate the season with my kids! After I briskly packed in three months’ worth of summer awesomeness into three weeks on my calendar, I told myself that this was not allowed to happen in the fall. I wanted to ride every weekend to its fullest, so that my kids wouldn’t miss a thing.

All parents know the best laid intentions can sometimes be just that... So how do I avoid making the same mistake next time? How do I keep from getting caught up with grocery store runs, chores, work, church and the occasional nap? The answer is ac-countability. I’ve made my plans known to my friends, and now all of you know that I don’t want to miss another season. So, since I’m a list girl and a big fan of color, I’ve made a Fall Bucket List of activities right here in town to help my family celebrate the season. Nothing crazy - nothing unattainable for my busy mom life - but something that I think my family will enjoy, and hopefully yours too. I’ve shared it here in this article and will have a link to it online on the Roanoke County Parks Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter sites.

So who’s with me? I’m tired of being too busy for a little family fun. I think there are times I spend more time on the planning and pin-ning (for you Pinterest fans) than I feel like I ever do actually doing these fun things. Here’s to a fall season full of hay rides, festivals, camp fires, fluffy leaf piles and happy faces from the kids and fam-ily I’m going to drag along to them! Happy harvest time everyone, and may the caramel never stick to your face!

Confessions of a Canoe Enthusiast

When people ask me why I enjoy paddling, I find it difficult to narrow it down to just one reason because of a diversity I’ve

not found in any other activity. Adventure was the first draw that made me want to participate more. I remember one of my early canoe trips back in the early 80’s on Twelve Pole Creek in West Virginia. I’ll never forget the feeling I had as we drifted down this tiny creek, only being able to see a few yards downstream at any given time as it meandered back and forth. There was a sense of adventure as we rounded each bend, never knowing what we’d see. Maybe a rapid, maybe a calm pool, perhaps a glimpse of an animal getting a drink, who knew? That was what made me want to keep going, not only on that creek, but others too.

I found that having this sense of adventure was easily repeatable when paddling because of the variety of paddling opportunities available; flat water or moving water, mild whitewater or chal-lenging Class V whitewater, salt water or fresh, canoe, kayak or raft, solo, tandem or small group. A veritable cornucopia of experienc-es to choose from. For me, moving water on creeks and rivers was the ticket. Every river or creek is unique. Every trip on every river is unique too. Water levels fluctuate, the weather changes, the peo-ple you paddle with change, the geography changes, the boats you paddle change, and the seasons change (some folks paddle year round). After paddling for nearly 30 years, all over the east coast, I’ve barely scratched the surface of possible rivers to paddle. It would be impossible for anyone to paddle every section of river out there. I’ll never run out of new adventures no matter how long I continue paddling, but I can sure have fun trying.

Another reason paddling has been so fulfilling for me is that it’s a lifetime activity that can be enjoyed by folks of any age. Paddling trips can be chosen to fit the specific needs and desires of the participants. Paddling has been the go to activity for my family for many years. When my two boys were ages two and three, our family did a three day raft trip on the New River, camping along

David Weir is Assistant Director of Recreation, and has over 25 years of paddling experience.

Why I Paddlethe way. My wife and I have great memories of us playing in the water, watching the boys crawl in the mud, throwing rocks, and eating marshmallows roasted over the campfire each night. We took many trips over the years and I have great memories watch-ing the boys grow up on the river becoming more independent, and eventually paddling solo. They are mostly grown up now and are into other pursuits for the time being. I have a feeling, however, that all it will take is one cute co-ed to ask them about paddling and they will become instant “experts” about paddling and the river.

Beyond my family, I’ve had the pleasure of paddling with a bunch of great folks over the years including college friends, coworkers, friends of friends, and random strangers I met while paddling, who ended up becoming friends. I’ve developed some close friendships because of paddling. A stalwart few travel long dis-tances to get together on the river. We have a standing spring trip each year. We all know that the trip will happen regardless of weather, so it’s easy to build it into our schedules. We never know where we are going until spring rolls around and we see which rivers have good water levels. We typically spend a week on the road paddling a different river each day. What a blast!

I was fortunate to be able to move to the Roanoke Valley and take advantage of all the paddling opportunities close by. It would be tough to find a better location for an avid paddler to live. I encour-age you to give paddling a try. You don’t need to travel far. As a matter of fact, you don’t even need to have any gear if you take advantage of one of the trips advertised in this magazine. If you prefer to figure things out for yourself, be sure to take advantage of the many resources available through local outdoors stores, in paddling guidebooks, and on the web. Excellent river access is available at several Roanoke County parks including Explore Park. So get out there and have some amazing experiences and make some memories! SYOTR (see you on the river)!

By Chelsea Arner

Exercising as a family can be one of the most rewarding ways to spend time together. Not only will you become healthier, you

will also strengthen your family bond. When exercising together, family members should talk to each other and work as a team. Whether you choose to go to the gym, go for a jog or walk to the park, you will have the opportunity to focus on interacting with your family and the goals you want to accomplish together.

Here are a few tips to help you get started! First, sit down as a fam-ily and discuss what kinds of activities everyone is interested in. Next, make a schedule that accommodates your weekly routine. Plan out your exercise routine and write it down. Don’t forget to vary the length of your exercise routines from a 10-minute walk to an hour hike. Finally, keep your routine up! We’ll show you more tips and tricks in the Family Exercise Workshop at Green Ridge, including beneficial exercises, fun workout ideas, nutritional tips, and more. Here are just a few exercises to get you started:

1Pushup – Set your hands shoulder-width apart. Your feet should be set up in a way that is comfortable to you. Think of

your body as one straight line. Neutralize the neck and spine. The head should be in line with the back. Bending at the elbow, push your body up until your arms are straight.

2 squat to Overhead Press – Set your feet shoulder-width apart. Hinge your hips so that your bottom moves backwards

during the downward phase of the squat so your knees no longer protrude over your toes. The pressure of the squat will be on your heels instead of your toes. Push upward through your heels and press the dumbbells towards the ceiling with your fingers facing outward. Exhale as you extend your arms, pressing the weight up-ward. Inhale as you lower the weight, focusing on pulling your elbows in toward your body to help stabilize the shoulders.

3Lunge with Bicep Curl - Keep your upper body straight, with your shoulders back and relaxed and chin up. Always engage

your core. Step forward with one leg, lowering your hips until both knees are bent at about a 90-degree angle. Make sure your front knee is directly above your ankle, not pushed out too far, and make sure your other knee doesn’t touch the floor. Keep the weight in your heels as you push back up to the starting position. While holding a dumbbell in each hand, let your arms hang down at your sides with your palms forward. Curl both arms upward un-til they’re in front of your shoulders.

4Plank - Plant your elbows directly under the shoulders. Ground the toes into the floor and squeeze the glutes to stabilize the

bottom half of the body. The legs should be working in the move too, but be careful not to lock the knees. Neutralize the neck and spine. The head should be in line with the back. Hold the position for 20 seconds to start out.

Family WellnessFamily Exercise 101 This workshop is designed to help families learn fun, safe and ba-sic exercises. If you’re new to exercise and want to learn beneficial exercises, proper form, healthy eating tips, and fun ways to burn calories, while still engaging with your family, then this workshop is for you. T’ai Chi ChaunOriginally developed as a Martial Art for self defense, T’ai Chi is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and dynamic stretching. It is sometimes described as ‘Meditation in Motion’ because it promotes serenity through gentle move-ments; connecting the mind, body and spirit through a sequence of blissful postures. The class consists of slow intentional move-ments, incorporating breathing and mindful imagery. Its goals are to relax, strengthen, connect the physical body and mind, en-hance the natural flow of Chi (life force), and improve one’s health. The Mayo Clinic has reported that the practice of T’ai Chi may reduce anxiety and depression, improve balance, flexibility and muscle strength as well as improve sleep quality. Suzanne Ross has been an artist for most of her life, with expe-rience as a both a professional artist, and a public school art

teacher. Her true passion has always been for plein air painting, or painting the outdoors. One day while painting a landscape at the beautiful Seneca Rocks in West Virginia, she was approached by a park ranger looking for family activities for a father’s day weekend event. That’s the moment Suzanne first put down her paintbrush, and picked up a drawing pen to learn caricature.

“I’ve always been interested in story telling through art, and just like any good story teller, I like to exaggerate. In a caricature you try to bring out the best features in someone and diminish those they’re not proud of. “ Suzanne says it’s usually pretty easy to find out which features to embellish and which to avoid through casu-al conversation with the subject. Even a novice painter can excel at caricature because this art form requires more observational skills than technical skills.

In recent years, Suzanne has developed a unique method of car-icature drawing instruction which helps inexperienced artists to pick up techniques more quickly. She brings to class dozens of hand-painted bodies that each tell a different story; such as ath-letics, dance, cinematic reference occupation, or a certain type of gesture. Students then start learning by concentrating on the fa-cial features of their classmates through careful observation.

Long time watercolor instructor Charlotte Hanks attributes her past 20 years as an artist to Suzanne Ross’s gifted art instruction. According to Hanks, “She’s a wonderful teacher. I fell in love with

painting and drawing when I took a class from her at a Roanoke County Parks facility in 1991 and she inspired me to become a teacher too. She’s very concise and teaches in an easy to under-stand way, and I felt when I left her class I gained an incredible amount of knowledge.”

Suzanne says she especially loves teaching caricature, because the artist can have fun embellishing features and personality traits without taking themselves too seriously. “There’s something ap-pealing about the question ‘how does another person see me?’ We have a mirror image of ourselves which is not a true image. Having someone else give us pointed eyebrows, petite ears or a long neck. There’s always something to discover. That’s why I’m an artist!”

Even though caricature drawing is not usually considered a high form of art, Suzanne Ross believes that some of the best caricature artists should be considered among the greats. From the art of the political cartoon, to the hand drawn images you might see in a magazine ad, we come across various forms of caricature art every day.

Another benefit of caricature art is that it’s not an expensive hob-by. All you need is a piece of paper and a set of drawing markers. Once you pick up the key skills of observation and the basics of drawing the human face, you can develop your talent for a life-time. With the friendly instruction from a pro like Suzanne Ross, it’s much easier than you think!

Caricature ArtExaggerating Life in a Playful Way Artist Suzanne Ross teaches several programs at Brambleton Center,

including a new course this fall called “Art of the Caricature.”

Many physical therapists rely on aquatic exercise to help their patients recover from an injury or surgery. According to

Ashley E. Supanich, a Carilion Clinic physical therapist at the Roa-noke Athletic Club, the non-weighted environment helps reduce swelling, decreases pain, and it is easier to boost the intensity of exercises for those recuperating from an injury than it would be on land.

But you don’t have to be in a physical therapy program to get the benefits of aquatic exercise. Overall, aquatic exercise puts you in an environment in which you are less likely to be injured and it is a great physical activity for everyone.

BENEFIts OF AqUAtIC EXErCIsE

Swimming builds muscle strength and endurance at the same time. This is achieved by simply moving through the water where every stroke meets water resistance, no matter what speed. And it is a great overall body workout.

“While many aerobic activities just engage the leg muscles, swim-ming engages your legs and your arms, an excellent benefit since we use our arms for more activities of daily living than our legs,” Supanich explained. “And swimming also helps target core mus-cles more than running or working out on an elliptical machine would, for example.”

Even if you don’t know how to swim a single stroke, you can still get these kinds of benefits. Many gyms offer aquatic exercise

Jump Into the Water for ExerciseAquatic Workouts

classes that are done in both shallow and deep water and offer many of the benefits of swimming laps.

“By just getting into water and moving around, you will auto-matically get a better cardiovascular workout,” Supanich said. “The minute you step in the water, your heart is working just a little bit harder because of the compression of the blood ves-sels by the water.”

KINDEr tO JOINts

For those that suffer from arthritis, are extremely overweight, or just severely de-conditioned, aquatic exercise is a much better option than most land exercises. And it is one of the best ways to transition into other types of exercises, in water or on land.

“Aquatic exercise is better for your joints because it reduc-es the gravitational forces at the joint and it can also reduce compressive forces on the joint,” Supanich noted. “For exam-ple, when you are running, you are actually putting three times the amount of force on your joints than when you are walking, so in the pool it would be even less stress and strain on your joints.” If you suffer from joint issues or are just looking for a terrific overall body workout, consider swimming some laps at your local pool or check out the aquatic exercise classes at your gym.

Although children seem very resilient, they are more prone to concussions than adults. And unlike a broken arm, a concussion cannot be seen or felt, so it is important to know the signs and symptoms. If the necessary precautions are not taken, a concus-sion can result in serious injury to the brain.

“A concussion is associated with a variety of symptoms that can occur immediately or hours to days after the injury,” noted Dr. Simonds. “The symptoms are classified as physical, cognitive, or emotional.”

Young children have the same symptoms as older children, but if a small child cannot communicate directly with you, it can be hard to tell if they have a concussion. Look for additional symp-toms such as:• Crying more than usual• Changes in the way they play or act• Changes in the way they nurse, eat, or sleep• Being upset easily or having more temper tantrums• Lack of interest in their usual activities or favorite toys• Loss of balance and trouble walking

“It is also important to note that for many concussions, people never lose consciousness,” explained Dr. Simonds. “So, a child does not have to ‘black out’ to have suffered a concussion.” If you think your child has a concussion, call your doctor. Remember, just a few simple precautions can keep an accident from turning into a tragedy. For more information about childhood head injuries, talk to your pediatrician or visit CarilionClinic.org.

While cuts, bruises, and broken bones can heal, head injuries can cause lasting effects. This complex injury can cause a

broad spectrum of symptoms and disabilities that range from mild to devastating, and recovery from a traumatic brain injury can take years or it may affect a person for the rest of their lives.

According to Gary R. Simonds, M.D., chief of neurosurgery at Caril-ion Clinic, preventable injuries remain the leading cause of death for children in the United States and approximately 80 percent of pediatric trauma cases are head injuries. Therefore, the best way to protect your child from a brain injury is to try to prevent it from happening in the first place.

“Injury prevention measures can help parents and caregivers cre-ate an environment where kids can explore and play while mini-mizing the risk of serious harm,” Dr. Simonds explained. Below are some easy tips from Dr. Simonds to keep your child safe and out of the emergency room:

• Wear a helmet. Make sure that your child always wears a prop-erly fitting helmet that is specific to the activity or sport they are doing. Wearing a properly fitted helmet can reduce the risk of se-vere brain injury by 88 percent.• Buckle up. Using the proper restraint system for your child (car seat, booster seat, or seat belt) will greatly increase chances of avoiding serious injury in the event of a car accident.• Play safely. Falls on the playground are a common cause of injury. Check to make sure surfaces under playground equipment are safe, soft, and well-maintained (such as wood chips or sand, not dirt or grass).• Make your home safer. Use home safety devices, such as guards on windows that are above ground level, stair gates, and guard rails. Keep them from taking a dangerous tumble.

Preschool AthleticsGreat Beginnings Youth ClinicsDid you know that studies have shown 49% of kids under 10 do not have the basic motor skills they need to compete in orga-nized youth sports programs? This result often leads to frustra-tion, embarrassment and fear that cause over 70% of young ath-letes to drop out of organized sports by age 13. To combat this problem, Roanoke County has developed a program designed to help prepare children for the challenges of organized sports in a non-threatening atmosphere, without the worry of competition.

The program, Great Beginnings, is a five week instructional pro-gram targeted to preschool and Kindergarten aged boys and girls with little to no organized sports experience. Under the supervi-sion of trained coaches, this program helps parents to work to-gether with their children to learn how to properly teach the ba-sic motor skills that are needed for team sports. Using progressive skill stations, children are challenged to learn both fundamentals and new techniques. Active parent participation required.

Not long ago, Roanoke was a virtual craft beer desert, with only one brewery doing business in the area. Skip ahead to today

however, and the Star City seems to be overflowing with brewer-ies, going from famine to feast in only a few short years. This uptick in local beer production has obviously been a blessing for beer lovers, but has positive effects on the local community as a whole.

The main catalyst for the brewery boom was the loosening of the state’s somewhat draconian alcohol laws, especially the passing of SB 604 in early 2012. That piece of legislation allowed brewers to sell their beer by the pint on site, freeing them from the previous law that mandated alcohol sales be tied to food sales. “[SB 604] basically allows you to make money from the get-go, instead of having to rely solely on distribution,” says Parkway Brewery found-er Mike “Keno” Snyder.

Adding a retail element to small craft brewers changed the dy-namic of the business in Virginia, and in the Roanoke Valley. This turned the local brewery from strictly a manufacturing facility to place for beer lovers to gather over a pint; a destination as op-posed to a factory. This change has had a major impact on an-other booming sector of the Roanoke community: the outdoors lover.

“It seems like a lot of outdoors people are craft beer people as well,” says Sean Osborne, owner and head brewer at Soaring Ridge Craft Brewers, which opened earlier this year. “Outdoorsy people appreciate local products more, and appreciate a better product.”The “live hard, play hard” mentality has given rise to a bevy of com-munity events like pub runs and rides that are centered on both breaking a sweat and knocking back a cold one.

Snyder says Parkway has a steady stream of mountain bikers, runners, cyclists, and hikers come through on any given day. He even says they had a kayaker pull out of the Roanoke River right in front of the brewery and head straight for the bar. It’s this type of community that creates a high quality of life making Roanoke a desirable place to live, and in turn a desirable place to locate a business. “I’m amazed by the amount of people who come to the area for school or whatever, and then leave, but end up coming

back because of the access to the outdoors,” says Snyder. “They are just drawn to the area.”

Roanoke has worked hard to leverage its natural assets, making the outdoors a part of the greater Roanoke narrative through commu-nity events like the Blue Ridge Marathon and Go Outside Festival. One look at the Greenway or the Carvins Cove parking area on any afternoon of the week shows those efforts are paying off; Roanoke is becoming an outdoor recreation destination and craft beer culture plays a part. The parallel between healthy outdoor living and craft beer is apparent in places like Colorado and Oregon where there is a high concentration of both outdoor recreation and breweries.

“A brewer’s best friend is a bicyclist,” says Snyder. “I think they are just rewarding themselves. I think they care about what goes into their body. They take good care of their health and realize it is a better quality beer.” That quality beer is more accessible than ever, and not just at local breweries. Many small brewers are opting to can their craft beers, as oppose to the traditional glass bottle, so enjoying a local craft beer on the river or the trail is now possible. This trend is just another way craft brewers are catering to the outdoor enthusi-ast, something Osborne believes will continue in Roanoke.

“As there are more craft beer drinkers and more outdoorsy people, there is a bigger segment to go after,” he said. “They keep growing and eventually they will keep intertwining more and more.”
