Linus JiremarkPackground

Linus Jiremark is a packaging sustainability specialist

with a mission to create “packaging solutions with

regard to future generations”. He is accustomed

to challenge the packaging industries through

independency and with differentiated low-impact

purposeful designs.

Peter GoodwinClosed Loop Recycling

Peter Goodwin designs, implements and manages

collaborative systems and programmes within the

hospitality and foodservice sector. His expertise

is based on creating value and markets for used

food and beverage packaging to ensure materials

are recovered as a valuable raw material for local

manufacturers.

Sander DefruytEllen MacArthur Foundation

Few people know more about the plastics

packaging system than Sander. He works with the

New Plastics Economy initiative and has been part

of the core team writing both the New Plastics

Economy reports.

WEBINAR 1 – DISCUSSION TOPICS

aReimagine the Package – Design for Zero Waste

aProducts to People – Reimagine Delivery Models

EMERGING THEME: Beverage Delivery Models

The coffee-to-go lifestyle is here to stay, and if you’re a caffeine lover, that’s great news. However, huge amounts of coffee lids and cups go to waste on a daily basis in the modern economy. From an economic and behavioral/use standpoint these items are essentially non-recyclable, despite our best efforts.

We are seeing a variety of broad, collaborative, use-return-reuse cup and lid systems emerging on the OpenIDEO platform. These new delivery models offer a compelling alternative to the unintended consequences of our current convenience based systems, and could be a powerful way of designing out one of the worlds most common forms of plastic waste.

EMERGING THEME: Disappearing Packaging

There are multiple Idea variations on the theme "let's create a packaging solution that disappears as a result of the product being used.” This may be through consumption, some form of decomposition or another design method.

We find this approach compelling since these concepts aim to eliminate the need for a plastic container entirely. Whether edible or water soluble, such containers still fulfill their duty as packaging while seeking to create zero waste (if appropriately designed). One can see such packaging applications working especially for food (edible or compostable packaging) and personal care (water soluble packaging). However, it is essential that designers consider the alternative materials suggested in order to ensure these solutions are not causing any unintended, negative effects to the system.

WEBINAR 1 – DISCUSSION TOPICS

aProducts to People – Reimagine Delivery Models

EMERGING THEME: New Bottle Cap Formats

Several proposed Ideas on the platform seek to design various stay-on bottle cap systems while maintaining user convenience, and having some fun along the way.

Keeping the bottle cap on the bottle is the safest way to make sure it's collected for recycling, as these caps are too often small to collect and recycle individually. Even though it is not made of the same material, it can be separated from the PET bottle in (most) modern recycling facilities. A cap system that keeps the lid safely attached to the bottle, while allowing for convenient unscrewing and drinking, could therefore be a strong way of reducing leakage of caps into the ecosystem. Several proposed Ideas make a serious attempt at creating a feasible stay-on system while maintaining user convenience.

We’ll discuss the merits of these emerging Ideas, as well as some potential areas to consider when designing within this scope.
