Perfused Heart Assessment: Langendorff and Working Heart Training Course
1-Day Training Course for the Cardiovascular ScientistFriday, June 8th, 2012 (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.)The Institutes for Pharmaceutical Discovery23 Business Park DriveBranford, CT 06405
This training course will focus on experimental theory, equipment mastery, and surgical skills for optimum isolated heart measurements. Relevant data including Left-Ventricular Pressure, Surface ECG, Preload and Afterload Pressure, and Coronary Flow will be recorded and analyzed.
Don’t miss this opportunity to observe live animal surgery demos on the widely accepted heart model. The technique allows the examination of contractile strength (inotropic effects), heart rate (cronotropic effects) and vascular effects without the complications of an intact animal model. The Isolated Heart experiment allows the researcher a valuable tool for investigations in pharmacological and physiological research without the systemic influences of other physiological processes.
A panel of experts will be on hand to provide the crucial information needed to successfully install and maintain Langendorff and Working Heart Systems.
Avoid common pitfalls and take the right steps to streamline your physiological data acquisition and produce valid results from day one. Maximize your data investment with powerful analysis toolsets.
The A-Z of isolated hearts in a day-long intensive learning format.

Experimental TechniquesTraining Series
Training Overview:
A day-long, thorough overview of the Langendorff and Working Heart Systems, this training course will pair the necessary theory, surgery, equipment and software components necessary to implement successful cardiac function research studies.
With a hands-on approach to learning, the goal of this educational event is to provide attendees access to techniques not easily found through traditional channels. Since there are as many potential experimental variations as there are scientists, each day’s curriculum has been designed to introduce concepts that keep with the modern day practices but allow the scientist plenty of room for individualized application.
Using the Isolated Heart Techniques, investigations involving phenotyping, gene manipulation and pharmacological studies can be conducted without the effects of systemic intervention. Ventricular Preload and Afterload, Ventricular Pressure, Ventricular Volume, Coronary Flow, and Metabolic Parameters are investigated in the Isolated Heart experiment, providing a thorough evaluation of a wide range of heart properties.
This course is designed to provide the researcher a thorough overview of the two main Isolated Heart techniques. Experimental theory, equipment operation, and surgical techniques are combined with data collection and analysis to walk researchers through all of the skills necessary to conduct Langendorff and Working Heart experiments.

Training Course Instructors:
Jeff McVeigh — Research Scientist
Jeff has over 15 years of small animal research experience, most of which has been focused on isolated heart experimentation. While working for a Bay Area Cardiovascular Pharmaceutical Company, Jeff’s group focused on the application of molecular cardiology to the discovery and development of novel, small molecule drugs for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In addition, Jeff’s group was a key component of obtaining FDA approval for their Company’s compound. Jeff brings expertise in surgical techniques and vast experience in the operation
and execution of Isolated Heart Experiments. For the last 3 years Jeff has been ADInstruments training consultant for Isolated Heart Preparations.
Brandon Bucher — Product Manager, ADInstruments
As a member of ADInstruments’ Corporate Training & Support Team, Brandon has extensive experience providing hands-on training and technical support to a large customer base of cardiovascular researchers focused on Isolated Heart Experiments. Brandon’s background in biomedical engineering, and previous work in designing specialized Langendorff systems delivers an exceptional understanding of the underlying theory, mechanics, and operation of Isolated Heart systems, with a strong grasp of the necessary data collection and analysis tools that are key to the experiment. Brandon received his B.S. in Bioengineering from Washington State University (2006).
