Experimental Series at a Glance for Elevate (continued)

Lesson 1: The Creator

If you designed a world, what would it look like? It would probably have a lot of your favorite things

in it. Looking at the world you made would tell someone a lot about you. God designed this whole

world exactly the way he wanted it, and because of that, it can tell us a ton about who he is. All the

things we learn through science can help us get to know God better. In fact, that’s why this world

was made!

Lesson 2: The Lab

God made this world for a reason. Wherever we look, we learn more about him! The things he made

are incredible, and so is the way he made them. This week, we’ll look at some huge parts of our

universe, and through them, discover some awesome things about God.

Lesson 3: The Scientists

From the beginning, God wanted to share his creation. He gave us an incredible responsibility, to

take care of and explore this incredible world. This week, we’ll look at our roles in God’s story, and

learn how each one of us is known and designed by God.

Lesson 4: The Reaction

Just when everything in God’s world was going great, something terrible happened. People began to

disobey God, and stopped living the way he made them to live. They did things God said were

wrong, things we call sin. This looked like the end of God’s purpose for our world, but he had an

amazing plan, a plan to show everyone how great his love for us is.

Lesson 5: The Solution

What happened in God’s world was a disaster, but God’s purpose for us didn’t end when we

disobeyed him. He still has a plan to make us like new again, and would give anything to make that

plan happen. When you see how much God loves you, everything changes.

Lesson 6: The Purpose

God made this world so we could know who he is. He gave it to us to care for, and wants every one

of us to be all He made us to be. Every time we serve, defend, and love others, we’re showing them

the same thing that changed our lives: God’s love.

Opening Song 2:00 Welcome to Elevate! It’s time to get started. Come up to the front, and shout out your favorite thing to learn about.

Welcome and Opening Activity 10:00 Welcome everyone! My name is __________. I’m super excited that you’re all here, because we get to do something super cool today. We have games, stories, and experiments to get to, so let’s get going right away! For this first game, I’m going to need two volunteers who love to build things.

Do This: Quickly choose two volunteers. Place a set of 10 giant stacking cups in front of each of them.

This game is called “Stack Attack.” You must build a pyramid out of these cups, then get all of the cups back into one stack. The first one to finish is the winner! I’ll give you a helpful hint to start out. The bottom row of your pyramid has to have four cups in it for this to work. Before we start out, let’s find out the names of our contestants. Do This: Ask each kid their name, and repeat it for the audience. Ready? When the music starts, you can start stacking! Remember, you have to make a pyramid, then get all your cups back into one stack. Let’s go!

Worship 5:00

Great job! Congrats to _______, our winner! I’ll clear your stacks off of the stage, while you check out our question of the day!

Question of the Day 3:00

What’s one awesome thing about our world? Go ahead and talk about your answer with someone sitting next to you!

Do This: Emcee as the kids are sharing their answers. Encourage them to share with the people around them, and encourage any kid whose story you hear. Know This: Allow kids time to interact with one another. Feel free to ask a few of them what their answer is, but you don’t have to have them share with the whole group.

There are so many awesome things about our world, because our God is amazingly creative. He thought of everything that exists, and made it all. He invented planets, solar systems, gravity, DNA, and everything else we can think of. It all exists because of how incredible God is.

God is so awesome, and we get to spend time with him. Showing God that we love him is called “worship.” That’s something we do every week here in Elevate. Whenever we spend time with God, choose to follow him, or tell others about him, we are

worshipping. The best part is, worship can be super fun! Let’s worship God by standing and singing this song together.

The more we learn about how this world works, the more we discover about God, because he made it all! Knowing how powerful and creative God is makes it that much more amazing that he loves and cares about you and me enough to listen to us when we talk to him. He always listens to you, no matter where you are, or what time it is. In fact, God will listen to us now. Let’s take a moment, and talk just to him. Here, we usually close our eyes and fold our hands, to help us focus on God while we talk to him. Let’s do that now. God, you are so awesome. Thank you for making this world, and trusting us with it. Help us to learn more about you today. Amen.

Experimenting can be awesome. When we learn about God, we start by reading the Bible and spending time with him, but there are a ton more ways we can get to know God, too. One of those ways is through science! This series, we’ll see how we can learn about God by looking at our world. Everything from the smallest atoms to the biggest stars in the universe can show us more about God.

There’s so much to learn about our world, though, that we don’t have time to get to it all! If only we had someone who really knew their stuff, a scientist, or an inventor, to explain all of it to us. Oh! What’s going on? Let’s see what this is about.

Wow! Thanks Calvin. How cool is that? We can learn about God through science. There’s an awesome verse in the Bible about that, too. Let’s get it up on the screens!

Memory Verse 5:00

Do This: Read the verse from the screen. In this verse, the person writing it just looks up at the sky, and learns about God. The word “heavens” back then was another word for the sky. He said we can tell that God made everything, just by how incredible it is. What do you think this verse means when it says “The heavens tell about the glory of God”?

Do This: Allow one or two kids to answer. Build off of their answers into the following statements.

“Glory” means awesomeness and magnificence. The writer is telling us that the sky shows us something about how incredible God is. He made our earth, our sky, and holds it all together.

May 19/20 9

This verse is a great way to remember God’s awesomeness. Let’s practice saying it together! Do This: Read the verse together.

This time, I’m going to read the verse. Try to say it at exactly the same time as me. You’ll have to watch me really closely, I might speed up or slow down!

Do This: Read the verse, slowly at first, but changing your pace at random. You can repeat this several times, if you have time.

Good job! Keep practicing this verse on your own, because we’re going to be learning about it for the next few weeks. The next thing we get to do, though, is a group activity!

Group Activity 10:00

Know This: Since this is summer, our schedule looks different than usual. If you are able to do group time, you are encouraged to do it, as the closeness of a smaller group is a great thing for kids to experience. If you aren’t able to do this section in group time, keep following this script, and direct the activity from the stage.

For this activity, we get to design a world of our own. We’ll use these markers to draw anything we want into our world.

Do This: If kids are doing this activity in groups, split them up now, and direct them to their group leaders. Do This: If you are doing this activity as a large group, show kids a large whiteboard on stage, where it can be drawn on. Take out several dry erase markers. You may draw the things the kids suggest, or you may invite a couple kids on stage to draw everything.

Since this is our world, we get to put anything in it that we want to. I’ll start with a giant circle. Do This: Draw as big a circle as you can on the whiteboard.

Ok, there we go! What should we put into our world?

Do This: To the best of your ability, draw the objects the kids suggest, however ridiculous. Ask questions like “How big should that be?” and “Where will that go?” Be ready to suggest fun things to put into the world if ideas slow down. For example: A giant swimming pool, a

skateboard park, and a tree with every kind of fruit on it. Try to let kids suggest most of the ideas, however.

Awesome. This world is getting full quickly. I think there’s something we can learn from this. The things we put in this world are the most important things to us. Do you think God put things in this world because they’re important to him?

Everything in this world has a reason for being here. The sun keeps us warm, the clouds keep us cool, the trees create food and air. Animals keep the plants healthy, gravity holds us to the earth. There is so much going on, and all of it is important to God. God designed it all to show us who he is.

Application 5:00 I want to tell you something that not a lot of people know. In fact, this is so important, I want you to read it.

I can learn about God through science. Like Calvin said, when we do science, we’re figuring out how God made the world to work. The reason we can understand this world is because God designed it to work. The more we understand about this world, the more we can learn about God through it. Let me give you an example. Since this is a science example, I’ve got to get my science gear on. Do This: Quickly put on a lab coat and goggles.

Now it’s time to get experimental! This is a drawing of a cell. Did you know that everything in our world is made up of different kinds of cells? These tiny, tiny cells form our hands, our hair, and everything else. Most of them are so small, we can’t even see them. There are hundreds of types of cells, and hundreds of different jobs for a cell to do. This picture shows us the parts of a cell.

Every part of this cell has an important job. The nucleus (new-clee-us) is like the brain of the cell, it tells it what to do. The cell wall holds everything together. The mitochondria (might-oh-con-dree-uh) are like the stomach of the cell, they turn food into energy, and keep the cell going. We could spend hours learning about how cells work, but that’s not the thing I want you to know. Remember our big idea? Looking at this cell can help us learn something about God. We can learn about God from cells because he made them. What have we learned so far about this cell? Every part of a cell has a purpose, from the brain to the stomach to the cell wall. Without any of its parts, the cell wouldn’t be able to survive. What does that tell us about God? I think it’s this.

God makes everything with a purpose. He makes cells with a purpose. He made every tiny part of this cell with a purpose. He made dolphins, apples, and stars with a purpose, but most of all, he made every one of you with a great purpose. Check out this verse in the Bible. This is something Jesus said.

Do This: Read the verse from the screen.

Jesus says “Father” in these verses, because that’s what he calls God. Jesus was saying that if God takes care of small things, like birds or the hair on our head, he’ll definitely take care of us, too. God has a reason for every bird, he knows every hair on our heads. Just from looking at the world around us, we can learn that God has a reason for everything he does. That’s great news, because it means He made you for an important purpose, too. So, whether we look at birds, cells, or planets, we can learn about God through science.

God makes everything with a purpose.

Matthew 10:29-31 “Aren’t two sparrows sold for only a penny? But not one of them falls to the ground without your Father (God) knowing it. He even counts every hair on your head! So don’t be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.”

Worship 8:00

That’s so important to know, let’s say it again. “I can learn about God through science.” This world can show us so much about God, the more we study it, the more we get to know him! Do This: Set aside the scientist gear for worship.

When I learn about God, I love to worship him more and more. He is so powerful, creative, and loving, he’s the one I want to be in charge of my whole life. This whole world shows us who God is every day, and we can do the same thing by worshipping him! Let’s stand and let everyone around know how awesome God is while we sing!

It’s so fun to sing with you. Stay standing, because there’s more coming up. Remember our memory verse? It says that the heavens declare the glory of God, the skies show that he created them. Whenever we see a sunset, some awesome looking clouds, or even just look up at the stars, we can remember that God made it all, and made it all for an awesome purpose. This next song is about how God’s love for us is so huge, it’s even higher than the sky!

Awesome, I love worshipping with all of you.

Wrap-Up 2:00

We’re almost done, but there are two things you should grab when you leave. Do This: Show kids the Family Connection Card and the camp postcard handouts. In case you didn’t know, Elevate is going to camp! We have two different week long camps that you could come to. If you were there last year, you know camp is amazing. You can climb, canoe, swim, learn about God, and so much more. Be sure your parents get this postcard, it’ll tell them what they need to know about camp. The other thing to grab is our Family Connection Card. It’s a great way to show your families and friends what we have been talking about today. Be sure to get one of these when your parents check you out. Let’s finish up by talking to God. To help us stay focused on Him, let’s close our eyes and bow our heads while we pray. God, you are wonderful. Thank you for making this world, and for giving us a purpose. Help us to live for you this week. Amen. I’ve had so much fun hanging out with you all today, I hope to see you next week!
