Love - the Heart of Our Divine Connection

“Start the day with love, live the day with love, end the day with love.” Sri Satya Sai Baba

Of the vast kaleidoscope of human emotions and yearnings, perhaps love alone conjures up and evokes more subtle images, more deeply stirs our

hearts, more brilliantly fi res the imaginations, more urgently quickens the pulses, and more exuberantly lifts the Spirit! From time immemorial, people have tried to capture its essence in prose and poetry, in dance and drama, in art and sculpture and in music and song. Love is sought for by young and old alike, pursued equally by the high and mighty alongside those of simple estate, the humble the lowly. Love is hungered for by rich and poor alike, scientist and savant, saint and sinner. People search for love and try to bargain for it. We hope, dream and pray for it. Our spirits beg and plead for love. We aspire to know it from the deepest reaches of our being. What is this quality called love?

Often, when we look at the world and are endlessly reminded of pain, tragedy and trauma, it is profoundly diffi cult to see any manifestation of love or even to allow ourselves to “practice the Presence of God” by looking upward, reaching for hope, expecting a miracle, or simply trying to do our best whatever way or form that may be.

With all of our deepest yearnings to attempt to capture and experience love, it is singularly important to allow the dimensions of Spiritual Love to become known to us within the context of our lives. This can be accomplished as we, on an individual basis, examine and explore our lives to invite and embrace a more “tangible” demonstration of the love experience.

(a) Daily, begin to turn from limiting fears and feelings to positive and supportive perceptions and reactions about life. Our choices are ways to direct our energies to allow the inner dimensions of our divine nature to emerge. Choose to express kindness, gentleness, humility and forgiveness instead of hurt, anger, harshness or brashness. When we do so, note how this causes a shift in our feelings, in our receptivity and openness.

(b) Decide to take action toward positive changes in our lives. Studies of successful people in all walks of life consistently reveal that success fol-lows when people make positive choices about changes. Change is defi ned as “movement toward, making something different”. It suggests making a material (physical), emotional, mental/psychological difference so that the thing or condi-tion is noticeably other that it was.

A decision releases energy. It permits a new insight, an intuitive awareness, an emotional freedom to emerge. As this is supported in each area of life, slowly those issues that block or deny our freedom, our sense of who we are, slip away. We don’t have to “fi x the problem” as such. We need to focus on the solution. For example, if we have a digestive disorder, taking medication or seeking pro-fessional help is a possible solution. Yet, perhaps focusing on how to live in a healthy manner in all ways is the larger and more signifi cant goal and solution.

(c) Resolve to live every day fully. So much of life is put “on hold”, to delay our good to the future. We anticipate birthdays, anniversaries, special events and occasions and make plans accordingly. What about experiences of the moment, day-to-day? If it’s raining, put on a raincoat and get on with the job at hand. If a diet needs to be started, begin now! Find out what needs to be done, research what must be researched - and start. If the goal is meditation or starting a new job, healing a relationship or fi nding a new apartment, today is the day to begin! Today is the beginning of the rest of our life!

Loving, then, is about living life. It is not only about the special, hoped-for, dreamed-of relationship with a companion. It is the expression of all of our yearnings in useful, creative and fulfi lling ways. Loving is not a sexual act to be hotly pursued or pined for, but rather a yielding to life’s greatest impulses - to feel the kiss of sunlight through misty foggy places! Our Divine Connection is encouraged through our conscious cooperation with the world around and within us. If we are surrounded with music and yet only see the struggle it may have taken to birth the symphony, we lose the gift the music can bring us. If we are surrounded by needy people, begging and pleading for attention, it is only when we can move beyond their pressing and passionate pleas for help that we can hear their spirit sing or feel the exuberant release of their joy.

Brother Lawrence, a 17th century mystic who is honored today as a spiritual inspiration, practiced love through humility of service. He knew the meaning of pain. He was wounded and lame after a stormy life as a soldier. He had to work through much anxiety and remorse. He achieved his mastery through serving his brother monks in the bustle of a huge monastic kitchen, cooking for the whole order. Regular periods in the chapel spent in prayer and meditation led him to “practise the Presence” continuously, in the kitchen as well as in the chapel.

Love is about allowing all of the aspects of our varied lives, the tender and the tumultuous. Then the sacred and the profane become a chalice of our lives. It is only when we can clasp the vision of all that we dare to dream and forge that vision into the fabric of our daily lives that our Divine Connection is made real.

“I know, that, for the right practice of it, the heart must be empty of all else; because God wills to possess the heart alone; and as He cannot possess it alone unless it is empty of all else, so He cannot work in it what He would unless it be left vacant for Him.” (Brother Lawrence)

Dr. David Hawkins, MD, PhD devoted his life to assisting the spiritual evolution of humanity. He was a psychiatrist and had a practice serving thousands of patients from all over the world. Dr. Hawkins left this earthly life in 2012, but he left behind a collection of spiritual work including books and dvd’s for our study and contemplation.

Dr David Hawkins’s teaching is the path of devotional nonduality. Starting on Friday evening, January 4th , 2019 from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM we will study Dr. Hawkins’s second publication, entitled The Eye of the I for six weeks. Some of the concepts discussed in the Eye of the I are indentifying the Divine and identifying true spiritual teachers. The Divine is revealed by the qualities of love, joy, and peace. When we are in the presence of these qualities we know surely the “Presence of the Lord is in this place.” We know we are in the presence of a devoted teacher when they are not interested in fame or followers, but dedicated to the teachings of Truth which express in the world as love, joy and peace. We will discuss and contemplate this material as a group followed by a meditation. Please join us.

Rev. Mary Moore will be leading the discussion. She has been a lifelong student of world religions culminating in her bachelor’s degree in religious studies at University of South Florida. When she found the Hawkins material, she was delighted to have the eastern and western religious teaching combined in modern language understandable to the western contemporary mind. She has been a devoted student of Dr. Hawkins’s work for almost two decades. There will be a love offering and the offering will be donated to the Temple.
