Evidence– Based Interventions & Strategies That Support Today’s Youth

Pre-Conference A: “Very Young Girls” Film & Discussion to Follow Very Young Girls is an exposé of the commercial sexual exploitation of girls in New York City as they are sold on the streets by pimps and treated as adult criminals by police. The film follows barely adolescent girls in real time, using vérité and intimate interviews with them, documenting their struggles and triumphs as they seek to exit the commercial sex industry. The film also uses startling footage shot by pimps themselves, giving a rare glimpse into how the cycle of exploitation begins for many women. The film identifies hope for these girls in the organization GEMS (Girls Educational and Mentoring Services), a recovery agency founded and run by Rachel Lloyd, herself a survivor of commercial sexual exploitation. GEMS is committed to ending commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking of children by changing individual lives, transforming public perception, and revolutionizing the systems and policies that impact commercially sexually exploited youth. Very Young Girls will change the way law enforcement, the media, and society as a whole look at the commercial sexual exploitation, street prostitution, and human trafficking that is happening right in our own backyard. This session can help meet the MN Board of Social Work’s requirement of 2 accredited clinical content hours.

Featured Sessions

Monday, June 18th, 10:15am - 11:45am

Pre-Conference B: Helping Youth Build Executive Functioning Skills Executive functioning skills give children the mental abilities to self-regulate, plan, organize and focus attention to tasks. These skills are essential to academic success, but how do we help students build skills in these areas? Some children seem to develop executive functioning skills naturally, while others struggle, particularly those with an autism spectrum or similar diagnosis. Participants will leave with a better understanding of executive functioning skills and ways to help students develop these skills for a career of academic success in and out of the classroom. This is a team approach and tools can be used with any school staff. This session can help meet the MN Board of Social Work’s requirement of 1.5 accredited clinical content hours. Learning Objectives Leave with a better understanding of executive functioning skills and how they set up students for educational and

career success Identify stages of development and executive functioning skills built during that stage Acquire tips and activities to help youth build executive functioning skills in the classroom setting

Barb Stanton, PhD, LPCC, LMFT Dr. Stanton’s clinical work at the Anne Carlsen Center is focused on children and adolescents on the autism spectrum along with their caregivers. With many years of experience, Barb has learned to appreciate the infinite skills and talents of these amazing individuals as well as their struggles to navigate their environment. The focus of her care is on finding how to support people with ASD and similar diagnoses to achieve their highest level of success and gain skills for life. Barb lives in Pelican Rapids, MN with her rescue dog and guinea pig. Emily Coler Hanson, M.S., LMFT, CGP is currently employed as a Child and Adolescent Therapist with the Anne Carlsen Center. She is an approved supervisor through the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. She has worked as a therapist for the past ten years and has primarily focused her work on children, adolescents and their families. She has a particular interest in working with children who have experienced trauma, are on the autism spectrum, and prefers a team approach to helping children reach their goals. Her work often takes a strength based approach and is influenced by the Nurtured Heart Approach. She lives in Fargo, ND with her spouse, toddler son, and rescue dog.

Parents as Partners - Strategies to Build Relationships with Parents to Support their Children Considering Race, Ethnicity, Background, Experience and Culture Every day we have the opportunity to work with children who come from a variety of different family structures; as social workers, we have a fundamental understanding of family systems theory and the perspective of person in environment. We also understand empowerment theory and work within the framework of NASW code of ethics; AND we need to figure out how to partner with all of the families of our students. We come with a lot of background in understanding the complexities of these structures and how they impact our students in how they experience school. We know about genograms and ecomaps and how often do we use this knowledge in our everyday practice with families? We understand conflict theory but do we know our own conflict style and how that may play out in our everyday interactions? We have a fundamental understanding of race theory and how does that understanding come into practice when you are working with a family outside of your race, ethnicity or culture. This session will offer the participants the opportunity to reflect on their own knowledge and how to better operationalize this in our daily practice with students and their families. Participants will have time to reflect, share their own celebrations and challenges and leave with some concrete ideas of how to better connect with families themselves and to broker the relationships of families with the greater school community. This session can help meet the MN Board of Social Work’s requirement of 1.5 accredited clinical hours.

Learning Objectives: Participants will consider how their basic knowledge of family systems theory, empowerment theory, conflict theory

and PIE can provide a framework to increase their connections with parents and the parents connection to school Participants will learn their own personal conflict style and how that can be a helpful tool to better engage with parents

and manage challenging conversation Participants will discuss the impact of culture, mental health and special education and learn ways to overcome and

break down the barriers that may exist to service children in our schools

Participants will develop strategies to empower parents in the school community so that they are more involved in the school and their children's education

Heather Alden, MSW, LICSW, is a school social worker in St. Paul Public Schools, having worked in urban education as both a teacher and school social worker for over 20 years. In 2015 she received the Hamline University Alumni, "Making the World a Better Place" award. Heather has provided professional development to educators, school social workers, other mental health professionals, and parents nationally and regionally. Heather is an adjunct professor at Augsburg College teaching both undergraduate and graduate education students. Heather has developed and has run a school-based mentor program Project Connection at EXPO Elementary for the past eight years that focuses on

students who have experienced trauma and their families having increased connections to school and adults who work there. Alden is an advocate for mental health awareness, increased parent involvement, social emotional learning, culturally competent practice and bullying prevention work. She is a mother of two daughter in middle school and is actively trying to raise them to be confidant, strong and smart young women.

Secondary Traumatic Stress Working with children who have experienced maltreatment can be incredibly rewarding, but also overwhelming and painful as you hear horrific stories and see firsthand the effects on children who have endured so much. You listen, stay present, take it in, and serve as a safe holding environment as they share their trauma experiences. Now what? Working with children who have experienced maltreatment places you at risk of burnout, high turnover and even developing symptoms of PTSD. The presentation explores the impact of secondary trauma and provides practical ways to assess it’s impact and identify steps to protect yourself and recover. This session can help meet the MN Board of Social Work’s requirement of 2 accredited clinical hours. Learning Objectives: Develop an understanding of burnout, vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress and compassion satisfaction Identify several risk and protective factors that impact secondary traumatic stress Identify individual and agency action steps and tools to lessen and heal from the impact of secondary traumatic stress
