DAY 1 | GLASGOW/GREENOCK

The bustling metropolis of Glasgow is the economic engine of Scotland—and an architectural delight. After a walking tour we’ll depart via coach, and travel onward to Greenock. Originally a small fishing community, Greenock grew with industrialization and boasts the site of the first dock on the River Clyde. The community has a rich maritime history and was a major shipbuilding and import centre. Here, we'll board the Ocean Endeavour, our home for the next ten nights.

DAY 2 | ISLAY

The Queen of the Hebrides, Islay is the southernmost of the Inner Hebrides. This island lies only forty kilometres from the Irish coast. Islay is a haven for seabirds, thanks to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream.

We will visit Loch Finlaggan historic site, home of the Lords of the Isles and Clan Donald, along with a visit to Gruinart Nature Reserve, a thriving habitat for barnacle goose, hen harriers and corncrakes.

Islay is world-famous for fine whisky, thanks to clear waters, fine peat and barley.

7

Page 8: EXPEDITION CRUISE Scotland Slowly · fantastic collection of over 100 islands 70km off Scotland’s west coast. ... beauty! Twenty-three kilometres west of the Shetland Islands, Foula

DAY 3 | IONA AND STAFFA

The isle of Staffa is famed for basaltic formations and numerous caves. The best known of these is Fingal’s Cave, a spectacular geological feature named for the Celtic hero. Originally known in Gaelic as “the melodious cave”, it provided the inspiration for Mendelssohn’s overture, The Hebrides.

St. Columba established his monastery at nearby Iona—the burial place of kings. The restored Iona Abbey complex preserves two outstanding eighth-century crosses and a splendid collection of sculpture.

DAY 4 | SKYE

This is a fabulous day for birders, photographers, and hikers. We will cruise the southwestern shore of Skye to visit Loch Coruisk, a freshwater loch accessed through Loch Scavaig. Here we find one of the finest mountainscapes in Britain, backed by the Cullin Mountains. We will hike the western shore and revel in the view.

DAY 5 | OUTER HERBRIDES

At times referred to as the Long Isle or the Western Isles, the Outer Hebrides are a fantastic collection of over 100 islands 70km off Scotland’s west coast. Known today as a leader in renewable energy and a Gaelic stronghold, The Outer Hebrides have a colourful history. Here we find the oldest evidence of human habitation in Scotland with Pictish, Norse and Scots influence. We’ll search out the rich marine and bird life of the islands as conditions permit.

Adventure Canada itineraries may be subject to change without notice due to weather, ice, and sea conditions.

Page 9: EXPEDITION CRUISE Scotland Slowly · fantastic collection of over 100 islands 70km off Scotland’s west coast. ... beauty! Twenty-three kilometres west of the Shetland Islands, Foula

DAY 6 | ST. KILDA

The archipelago known as St. Kilda was inhabited until 1930. Today, St. Kilda is a World Heritage Site, protecting fascinating ruins as well as natural heritage features.

Seabirds thrive on the island of Hirta—notably, puffins, fulmars, and the largest gannet colony in Britain (and the second-largest in the world). Hirta is also home to feral sheep left by the departing islanders. Enormous cliffs offer dramatic ocean views for our hikers!

DAY 7 | ISLE OF LEWIS

Lewis is the largest of the Hebridean Islands and a Gaelic stronghold. Harris Tweed has its headquarters on Lewis. Its product is hand woven exclusively in the Outer Hebrides by weavers working at home. We’ll visit Stornoway, the island’s capital.

On the west side of Lewis is Callanish, one of Britain’s most important Stone Age sites. Callanish’s standing stones are said to be giants who were punished by St. Kieran for refusing to convert to Christianity.

9

Page 10: EXPEDITION CRUISE Scotland Slowly · fantastic collection of over 100 islands 70km off Scotland’s west coast. ... beauty! Twenty-three kilometres west of the Shetland Islands, Foula

DAY 8 | KIRKWALL, ORKNEY

Kirkwall is dominated by the massive Magnus Cathedral, dating from 1137. This is the final resting place of the famed Orcadian Arctic explorer, John Rae.

We’ll visit the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a unesco World Heritage site. Here, we’ll find the 4,000-year-old Ring of Brodgar and The Hall of Clestrain, the childhood home of John Rae!

DAY 9 | PAPA STOUR AND FOULA

Marine and bird life flourish at Papa Stour among cliffs, caves, sea stacks, and blowholes. We will have a morning zodiac cruise exploring the coastline’s rugged beauty!

Twenty-three kilometres west of the Shetland Islands, Foula is the most remote inhabited island in the UK. Here, a few dozen folk make their homes, many preserving traditional methods of agriculture and subsistence. Arctic terns, red-throated divers, and great skuas may be found here.

DAY 10 | ABERDEENSHIRE

Scotland’s northeast coast features seaside towns, rolling fields, stunning coastlines and countless historic points of interest. The gentle landscape makes it perfect for walking and exploring by foot. We’ll spend our day exploring the vibrant region outside of Aberdeen.

DAY 11 | ABERDEEN

The Ocean Endeavour arrives in Aberdeen in the morning. You may choose to extend your stay in Scotland on your own or make your way home from here.

Adventure Canada itineraries may be subject to change without notice due to weather, ice, and sea conditions.

ACTIVITY LEVELAdventure Canada endeavours to accommodate all passengers, subject to the specific itineraries and terrain of our excursions, vessels characteristics and accommo-dations. Adventure Canada tours necessitate that passen-gers be in reasonably good health. Zodiac cruises and transfer times can be lengthy. You must be able to climb stairs between decks on the ship. You must also be able to climb the external gangway stairs to transfer between the ship and the Zodiacs. Our expedition team and ship crew are available to assist you in and out of the Zodiacs, both on shore and at the gangway. Adventure Canada expeditions may involve extensive walking in variable weather conditions over sometimes sandy or uneven terrain. Wherever possible while on shore excursions, we break into smaller, guided groups according to interest and physical ability. This may mean one small group going off on a strenuous, two-hour hike on steep terrain, while another explores the area in and around the landing beach, keeping to relatively level terrain and short distances. Generally speaking, once a few people are ready to return to the ship, the Zodiacs are usually available to take you back at the time of your choosing. To inquire about whether our adventures are suitable for you, please do not hesitate to contact us.

23

Page 24: EXPEDITION CRUISE Scotland Slowly · fantastic collection of over 100 islands 70km off Scotland’s west coast. ... beauty! Twenty-three kilometres west of the Shetland Islands, Foula

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONSAdventure Canada is committed to extending a high level of customer service to all travellers, including people with disabilities. At the time of booking please contact our Client Services Team to discuss your needs.

ZODIAC CRAFTZodiacs are the favoured means of transportation for shipboard expeditions and, indeed, wherever shallow waters and beaches ring the shoreline. They are stable, versatile craft that cruise at approximately four knots; in windy weather they can make for rather splashy rides. Wet gear is essential for any Zodiac tender, and Zodiac drivers are authorized to refuse embarkation to anyone inappropriately attired. Life preservers are absolutely compulsory and will be provided. Zodiac landings will generally entail disembarking onto rocky or gravelly beaches. The beach landings may be wet, meaning that there may be some spray en route to shore, and that you may have to step into water up to 25 centimetres / 10 inches deep.

MEDICAL FACILITIESPassenger safety is of utmost importance to us. This expedition is intended for persons in good health, and thus our tours may not be suitable for those who are not fit for long trips for any reason, including disability, heart, or other health conditions. Should any such condition become apparent, or should passenger safety become a concern, we reserve the right at our sole discretion to decline embarkation prior to the commencement of the tour or to disembark passengers prior to the completion of the tour. Our vessel is not equipped to handle serious medical conditions. Medical and Emergency Evacuation insurance is mandatory. If you require specific medica-tions, please ensure that you bring a supply adequate to last you for the duration of the journey and take care to properly pack them to ensure safe transport. Once aboard ship, we will be travelling in remote communities where prescriptions cannot be replaced. Select vessels have an onboard doctor; should you require the doctor's services, a consultation and treatment fee will apply. Any charges will be debited from your onboard account. To inquire about whether our tours are suitable for you, please do not hesitate to contact us.

GRATUITIESAdventure Canada expedition team and guides do not accept tips.

The procedure for providing a gratuity may differ from tour to tour. Your host will outline this on each tour.

Our ships’ crew work hard to please, and tips are ap-preciated. In fairness to all those who work together to make your trip enjoyable, tips are collected at the end of the voyage and distributed equitably among the crew. Although we leave tip amounts to your discretion, past passengers have asked for a recommended amount. We suggest a rate of $15 USD per day, per passenger.

AIRFAREWhen purchasing your airline tickets to meet us at our point of departure, please ensure that they are change-able or refundable; Adventure Canada is not responsible for missed connections due to late charter flights or changes / delays / interruptions in the ship’s intended itinerary and will not reimburse you for rebooking fees or new ticket charges incurred.
