FAO has been monitoring the world's forests at 5 to 10 year intervals since 1946. The Global Forest Resources Assessments (FRA) are now produced every five years in an attempt to provide a consistent approach todescribing the world's forests and how they are changing. The FRA is a country-driven process and the assessments are based on reports prepared by officially nominated National Correspondents. If a report is notavailable, the FRA Secretariat prepares a desk study using earlier reports, existing information and/or remote sensing based analysis.
This document was generated automatically from a desk study. FAO cannot be held responsible for any use made of the information contained in this document.

IntroductionIntroductory textNo official report has been received from Falkland Islands (Malvinas). This report is the result of a desk study prepared by the FRA secretariat in Rome, which summarizes existing available information using the established formatfor FRA 2020 country reports.
The Falkland Islands (Malvinas) comprises two main islands and 776 small islands. Both main islands have mountain ranges, the highest point being Mount Usborne (705 m) on East Falkland. There are also some boggy plains, most notably inLafonia in the southern half of East Falkland. Almost all the land is used as pasture for sheep.
Surrounded by cool South Atlantic waters, the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) has a maritime subarctic climate that is strongly influenced by the ocean in that the annual temperature range is narrow. The average maximum temperature is about 13 °Cin January and about 4 °C in July. Average annual rainfall is 574 mm, but East Falkland is generally wetter than West Falkland. Humidity and winds, however, are constantly high. Snow is rare but can occur at almost any time of year. Gales are veryfrequent, particularly in winter. [1]
