more new members coming in from Pierce and KingCounty ESAR’s (Explorer Search and Rescue). These newer members bring with them strengthsand skills that work so well with what we do – andthe collaboration and cross training with WASART isbeneficial to the ESAR community as well. We maybe working with different species, but many of thetechniques and requirements are similar and workwell in the field. As we expand the partnering in ourstate, we are all gaining more knowledge, skills, andawareness.

WASART really is unique in the type of servicesoffered, method of providing services, and workpartnerships. In the end, this enables us to provideeven more assistance to those who may need us.

We always hope for a happy ending when wereceive a call for assistance. Sometimes, however, that’s not the case.

Did you know we'reoften available to talkto your group aboutWASART or disasterprep?

    Mission Statement

To help animals and theirowners through disasterpreparedness, education, and emergency response.

On May 13th, WASART’s Duty Officer received acall from a private citizen asking for assistance inretrieving his beloved Springer Spaniel, Penny.Several days earlier he had been walking her on thepath above the cliff at Mud Mountain DamRecreation Area in Enumclaw, and she had goneover the cliff. He, his family, and even strangers hadbeen unsuccessfully searching for her during thattime. She had just been located.

Sadly, Penny was deceased. It was decided that, resources permitting, WASART would field a teamto return Penny to her owner.

The follow day, Mother’s Day, a team of 12 qualifiedWASART volunteers, including members ofWASART’s Technical Rescue Team, deployed tothe staging area where they were met by MudMountain Dam’s Park Ranger, Laura Robinson. Sheopened the locked gate for WASART’s equipmenttruck to get closer to the trailhead and thenremained for several hours at the gate keeping aneye on the team’s vehicles. Following a briefing atthe staging area, all necessary rescue equipmentincluding a litter and ropes were unloaded and theteam carried the equipment about half a mile to thelocation where Penny was last seen.

After sizing up the scene and seeing Penny about300 feet down the cliff face, the Technical RescueTeam members began the rigging necessary tosafely lower a member down the cliff face with thelitter on which Penny would be placed. Dr. JeffDahl, a veterinarian, was the Technical Rescuemember selected to go down the cliff face toretrieve Penny. Other members, as well as severalnon-WASART responders, were assigned to a haulteam. Dr. Jeff was lowered down to Penny. Oncethere, he carefully packaged Penny and strappedher to the litter. Under direction of the technical lead,Dr. Jeff and the litter were raised back up the cliff, with a few stops to negotiate some tricky spots.Once at the top, Penny and the litter were carriedout to the staging area to be taken home by her

owner. Following a debrief, all the equipment andsupplies were repacked into the equipment van andthe team departed for home.

The recovery was bittersweet. The team waspleased they could return Penny to her grievingowner but wished, as always in cases such asthese, that this deployment could have had ahappier ending.

We wish Penny's family the best in the days ahead.

Once over the edge, Dr. Jeff evaluates the terrainthat couldn't be seen from above. The loose dirtembedded with large rocks presented a challenge –the rocks are easily dislodged and a danger to bewatched.

A tale of two events:Raise the Hoof, GiveBIG

Attendees enjoy themselves at the first annualRaise the Hoof fundraiser. As an all-volunteernonprofit, WASART relies on donations andfundraising to pay the bills and purchase specialtyand and sometimes custom-made equipment. Ourtenth year in existence got a boost with twofundraisers.

When we decided to launch our first annualfundraiser in March, we had no idea that we wouldreceive the response we did. Without skipping abeat, we danced right into the annual GiveBIGevent in May and received even greater support.Pairing these two events together in the first half ofthe year and our supporters donated over $24,000.We were completely blown away by theirperformance!

The crowd for Raise the Hoof: Paws Up forWASART was the perfect complement of volunteers(much gratitude!), members, and guests. The guestspeaker, Dr. Mary Schoenfeldt, provided all inattendance a great perspective on how we see ourpets and why rescuing these animals in turn, helpsrescue the human. We could not have been morethrilled to have her there. Then a beloved supporterof WASART, Bonnie Towne, and her trusty canine,Lager, flew in from a vacation out of state just forour event to speak on behalf of the work that wehad done in rescuing Lager when he needed usmost. She roused the crowd for the final ask and

aided in connecting the guests to the work that wedo; lovable Lager played a big part in stirring thatemotional connection. Our own Denise and Zoeemceed the event and kept us on time and on cue.Ken Cottle was auctioneer extraordinaire, tuxedoand all, who got bidders to surpass our expectationsfor the live auction. In the background, 26volunteers worked to make the magic happen, fromset up to tear down. Without the seamless blend ofthese key players, we could not have pulled off thenight. The final number for this event was$16,617.60.

Not two months later, we were busy at work puttingtogether an email campaign for the SeattleFoundation’s GiveBIG event. This is a one day, 24-hour event, where we can truly make every dollarcount through both personal and corporatematching donations and the GiveBIG stretch pool. This year, we had 10 BOD members step up andpledge to match $1,000 (you are all amazing). Inaddition, an anonymous donor pledged to match upto $2,500 for which we could not be moreappreciative. It’s always a nail biter with GiveBIG asprogress is tracked in real time and you are neverquite sure how it is going to turn out. At about 11p.m., the last donation came in and we had reached$7,468! Although our goal had been $11,000 to payfor our second bipod/tripod, we had maxed out ourmatching donations and we are still waiting to seewhat corporate matching and stretch pool funds wewill receive at the end of this month.

It truly is a humbling experience to witnessgenerosity in action. WASART does amazing thingswithin the community and continues to build upon itsexperience and reputation. But WASART would notexist without your commitment. These events weresuccessful because of that and we hope you are asproud as we are! WASART is well on its way toraising the money needed to meet its operatingcosts for 2017. We only hold four true fundraisingevents a year and you, our members and donors, never fail to show up and support this organization.
