Exodus

The Eighth Plague: Locusts

• After hardening his own heart seven times, God now hardens Pharaoh’s heart in order to bring the remaining judgments which will result in the release of God’s people and that God’s people would know that He is Yahweh.  Note also that the hearts of Pharaoh’s servants are hardened as well

• Again God reveals what He is about to do and gives Pharaoh a day to think it over.

• Pharaoh’s advisors now speak up that Pharaoh’s resistance is devastating his kingdom. Note that they are the ones who suggest the compromise that the men of the Israelites go and serve the LORD.

The Eighth Plague: Locusts

• Pharaoh persists in bargaining rather than obedience.  He attempted to pressure Moses to compromise on the command they had received from God.  Moses refused the offer and the plague begins as foretold.  Always remember that there is no such thing as partial obedience.

• Pharaoh again practices admission rather than confession as seen by his continued refusal to let the people go.

The Ninth Plague: Darkness

• No warning or opportunity was given before this plague as was the case with the third (gnats) and sixth (boils).

• Lasted for 3 days.

• One of the principle gods of the Egyptian pantheon was Ra the sun god.  Viewed as creator of the world and represented in every other god.

• Again Yahweh shows His complete power over the elements of the world by providing light among His people.

• Again Pharaoh seeks bargaining over obedience but Moses insists on going out as Yahweh has commanded.

The Last Plague: Death of the Firstborn

• God revealed to Moses that this was the last plague and that Pharaoh would literally drive them from the land as a result.

• The Israelites were commanded to asked for sliver and gold jewelry from their neighbors.• God gave the Israelites favor in the eyes of the people.• Moses was highly esteemed by the Egyptians

The Last Plague: Death of the Firstborn

• Moses describes the plague to Pharaoh• All the firstborn will die, both people and cattle

• Unprecedented grief will follow

• The people of Israel will suffer no loss.

• The servants of Pharaoh will come before Moses and bow down to him and plead with him and his people to leave.

• Moses and his people will leave.

• Moses leaves Pharaoh in “hot anger”.  Few things are more disgusting than the ego of a person in a position of leadership putting the people he should be caring for and protecting in jeopardy.

• The point of no return has been reached and God’s judgment has been decreed.  God now hardens Pharaoh’s heart to bring the judgment completion.

• Note in 12:12 that in this final plague the LORD will execute judgments on all the gods of Egypt.

• The purpose of the Passover is that when God strikes the firstborn of Egypt, He will see the blood on the doorframe and pass over that house.
