Monday saw Prime cattle sell to 175ppk for a 550kg Blonde steer from Adrian Bowden of Drewsteignton with other steers

from Adrian rising to 168ppk and £1040. A couple of strong Limousin steers from JW & CL Stoneman of Sampford

Courtenay realised £1194 (778kg x 154ppk) and £1170 (724kg x 162ppk). Barren cows sold to 123ppk and £987 for a

grand 800kg South Devon from Dave & Shirley Mudge of Hexworthy whilst Blue cows from Stephen Slade of Aylesbeare

lamb of the same remarks at £84 as well as a further penful of 49kg lambs at £82.50 and Lin Loosemore of Yeoford sold

Anything lacking flesh was more like 152-163ppk or either side of £60 but better sold on a Friday.

897 CULL EWES & 15 RAMS

Cull ewes were a very mixed show with no superstars forward but sold to £100 for a Texel ram from

The Rolle Texel Flock of Budleigh Salterton whilst ewes peaked at £88.50 for Suffolk crosses from

Wilf Walters of Kingston, Texels at £88 for the Rolle Texel Flock, more Suffolk crosses at £88 & £85

for Messrs Southwood of Dartmouth and plenty of others £78 to £85. Next best ram at £82 for

Michael Stanbury of Throwleigh and best of the mules just about £65. Better bred grazing ewes well

sought after from £40 to £55 whilst very lean/plain ewes were harder to place. Hill ewes out in force

with the fleshed ewes selling either side of £40 but pens of very lean/plain again taking some shifting,

even to grazing men and usually £12 to £20. Overall average is down £15, as expected after last week’s

spike.

While the politicians appear to be at war in Westminster, life goes on and it’s business as usual down here in the West Country. The weather has been kind to us this summer and there still seems to be plenty of grass around which is reassuring after last year.

The farm agency team across the offices have been busy selling a range of properties this summer and the end of the summer has seen the launch of several large commercial farms which are seldom come by. We have also seen lots of small blocks and parcels of land come to the market, only to get snapped up which is encouraging given the negativity surrounding the ‘B’ word (BREXIT) news.

Our team of rural professionals were busy in the run up to the 31st July with Countryside Stewardship applications. The deadline was not extended this year, and therefore we have all our fingers crossed that means the RPA will be able to process applications in time to get offers and decisions out before the 1st January 2020 start date. This is a change from previous years, as the RPA have now taken over the administration of Countryside Stewardship from Natural England. The Countryside Stewardship scheme still seems to be proving popular, especially in times of uncertainty where we are unsure what the new scheme will involve and what payments may be offered. The government has issued reassurance that by entering Countryside Stewardship, this will not disadvantage farms when the new scheme is brought in (expected 2024). The current Countryside Stewardship scheme is a good way to get grant money towards fencing (£4.90/m for stock netting), as long as you are prepared to work with the scheme. In short, Countryside Stewardship is not always best suited to every farmer but is always worth looking into. The next round of applications will open early next year.

For those businesses that have applied for the Hedgerow and Boundaries grant this year, the Rural Payments Agency have warned there is a delay on processing these applications. Offers were supposed to be issued in July, but as yet we have seen no sign of them and an expected date has not been indicated.

The second round of the Countryside Productivity Small Grant Scheme has now been and gone, with the deadline closing on 3rd September 2019. There is no set timescale for when the decisions will be made on whether applications are successful or not. However, a word of warning, the guidance states equipment must not be ordered or purchased before applicants have heard whether their applications have been accepted. Once an application has been accepted, there is only 150 days in order to get the equipment ordered, purchased, installed and claimed. Everything applied for must be purchased and claimed as part claims will not be accepted. Be prepared to be asked to send photos of the equipment purchased and installed in order to receive payment. Also, a reminder that equipment must be kept on the farm for five years, and must be available for inspection.

In other areas of work, our team are always working on planning applications, compensation claims against utility companies and valuations for a range of purposes including secured lending, tax and family succession planning. If you have any queries or current issues, contact one of our team to see if we can help you.

Rural Reflection September 2019

Lastly, Baldwins Accountants and Kivells have combined forces this Autumn to deliver an evening seminar “Planning for the Future” which will be held at Trethorne Leisure Park, Kennards House, Launceston. We hope this will be an informative evening followed by warm refreshments and bowling. If you would like to book a place, please call 01409 259551 or email [email protected] by 18th September 2019.
