Unusual anglesFinding unusual angles on destination places in the city is what Dunedin Light photographer Derek Morrison thrives on. So when he visited

St Clair’s esplanade one morning just after sunrise and discovered a super low tide he was quick to create some magic. This image was made using a wide-angle 16mm lens with the camera mounted on a tripod in the wet sand. The wet sand created a beautiful reflection of the esplanade and the stairs leading up to it added an extra element of symmetry. “As usual there was quite good surf on this morning and every now and then the waves spilled across the bank where I was standing so I had to have eyes in the back of my head,” laughed Derek.

To check out more of Derek’s weekly photography visit www.dunedinlight.com and keep an eye out for his first book: Dunedin Light Seasons, due out now.

Calendar Girls go all outA group of extraordinary women, members of a very ordinary Yorkshire Women’s Institute, have plans to

raise funds for charity: a calendar. They go “all out” in their fundraising efforts and expose more than they’d ever planned. The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The calendar is a success, but friendships are put to the test under the strain of new-found fame.

As seen on 7 Days, Australia’s Most Wanted comedian Chopper is fizzing at the bumhole to be back in NZ for his biggest tour to date, and this time, he’s brought a big pad of paper with your name on it.

Some people have a shopping list. Some have a To-Do list. Chopper has a Shitlist. It’s like Santa’s naughty and nice list; but with more sack, and no one is getting toys. Restaurant serves your dinner cold. Put it on the Shitlist. The word ‘chillax’. Shitlist. Friend stabbed you. Shitlist. Just saw a romantic comedy you didn’t like... well maybe put yourself on the shitlist for that one, what did you expect? From the Ten Commandments to the Top 40 charts, history is littered with lists, but nobody’s done a list like Chopper because sometimes when you get angry, you have to get organised. Think of it as like a bucket list, well it rhymes with ‘bucket’ anyway. Everybody has a shitlist. What’s on yours?

As Chopper tours the country, every night in every city a new shitlist will be created and posted online. So, put it on your To Do list, just above laughing your ass off. Easily the best list since Schindler’s. Are you a hard bastard?

A new staging of this quintessential ballet is co-produced by Ethan Stiefel and Johan Kobborg, internationally acclaimed principal dancer of the Royal Ballet. Gillian Murphy, RNZB Principal Guest Artist and star of American Ballet Theatre, dances Giselle, one of the most dramatic roles in the classical ballet repertoire.

A love story unfolds against the ghostly backdrop of a Rhineland forest haunted by the fearful presence of the “Wilis” – vengeful spirits of abandoned brides. The beautiful peasant girl, Giselle, falls for Albrecht who conceals his identity to win her. The discovery of her lover’s deception shatters Giselle’s innocence and causes her to die of a broken heart. Albrecht is thrown into the hands of the merciless Wilis, but Giselle can-not bear to watch him die and returns as a ghost to

save him.

noun1. an intuitive unit of measurement: move it just a tinch; I’ll have a tinch more please

verb1. to make aesthetic adjustments: looks like it needs a tinch-up; could do with some tinching2. an organic method of process: to tinch it; forget the list, we’ll just tinch it

tinch™ was Helen Riley-Duddin’s childhood word for an intuitive measurement, and embodies her creative approach. tinch™ is a tiny inch, a pinch, a hunch. It’s fun, it’s intuitive, it’s idiosyncratic. Helen is a designer, design teacher, mum and wife. Helen’s background is in Communication Design, and Marketing with degrees in both. She has taught in the Design Department at Otago Polytechnic, alongside some freelance commercial graphic design projects.

After purchasing a new home and the birth of their daughter, Helen and her husband were keen to utilise their wall space by designing something halfway between art and play. “Designing two-dimensionally was what I always did, so I wanted to try a graphic approach to residential wall spaces while I was at home with our young daughter” said Helen. “We knew about Resene magnetic paint and were intrigued about the idea of creating wall art that could be easily changed or rearranged, so we painted a test wall and developed some designs.”

“tinch” is the concept unifying the works of designer/maker; Helen Riley-Duddin. Becoming new parents and first home owners, Helen and her husband decided to design something that both they and their daughter could enjoy - something that was halfway between art and play for the walls. Now a full-time business, the tinch range of magnetic and restickable wallscapes are making their way around the globe.

Helen chose to work with materials that she already had hoarded over years of various creative projects, mainly fabrics, and various wallpapers. Starting out creating some illustrations of whimsical scenes, some of Helen’s first designs were various birds, branches, and a tree for them to live in. From this, Helen realised she could develop a range of designs that could work together to form new scenes in a modular way.

“My design process is all about not only creating original illustrations for wall art but selecting and combining colours, textures, and patterns to evoke something - this is actually how most of my time is spent. For us, we found some of the older wallpapers nostalgic but ironically, we’d never want them on the wall as a wall treatment in their original context!” said Helen. Finding that when she took these old, unlikely materials that have lost their original appeal and re-used fragments of them in her designs in contemporary living spaces, they offered a whole new feel. And so the tinch range began.

Helen was able to start selling some of her designs online, after she felt there was a market for this type of dynamic and customisable wall art.

The range began with the magnetic wallscapes. “The idea being that as first home owners, we appreciated a certain reluctance to commit to major wall features that couldn’t necessarily be easily changed or updated, after taking 3 coats of oil-based sealant and 4 top-coats of white paint to cover the deep red walls in our daughter’s room!” said Helen. The concept for the wallscapes was

that they were interactive, modular, and non- committal. Customers often comment on this too; that they love they can pick a neutral palette for a room and have their custom-made magnetic wallscapes developed especially for their space, add onto it over time, change the scene as often as they like and even take it with them if they leave.

Many customers choose to paint part of a wall with magnetic paint - when top-coated with the wall colour, the magnetic area becomes disguised and appears to work like magic! Some customers paint bedroom or wardrobe doors, or even boards or canvases to mount on the wall. Resene have even provided tinch a with a discount coupon for their magnetic paint to give their customers - so it’s great to work with them in this way. Helen’s own home has several magnetic walls, and then there’s the studio too! “Our customers are those who appreciate locally-made, original designs. Much of the range is handmade which also appeals. Customers know that because of the materials they’re made from, everything is limited edition, and they know they’ll be owning something unique” said Helen.

Eventually the restickable range was introduced - purely in response to demand. “The world of wall stickers wasn’t something we intended to design for, but customers loved our aesthetic and design process which upcycles materials. The restickable range suits renters as they can be stuck and repeatedly re-stuck to any interior wall surface, and easily removed without leaving any damage or residue.”

Three years on, the range has grown a lot in response to customer demands, and through

Page 7: Exclusive November 2012

continually developing new designs - often inspired by her daughter’s imagination and interests but also by Helen’s own needs and interests in contemporary home decor solutions. Such a huge response has also gained tinch national and even international attention. “We’ve had some amazing magazine features, including Your Home & Garden, OHBaby!, Resene’s Habitat, Peppermint and Maeve magazine amongst several online blog features and even the homepage of Etsy.com - which is just incredible for a tiny Dunedin business” said Helen.

tinch is now a fulltime business. Helen works in her home-based garden studio which has lots of places for her daughter to potter and play while Mum designs and makes. Everyday orders are sent around New Zealand, and all corners of the globe, which is the beauty of online trading. Wait times vary, but often up to 2-3 weeks for custom orders depending on demand. tinch products are also available at a few design stores and gallery shops around the country which are listed on their website. Some of the tinch current top-sellers and favourite designs include the fridge clocks, alphabet soup & number stew magnets, Fantail sets, Tree Community wallscapes and picture frames, and the Christmas range has just been re-released, which sold out last year!

For now, demand is still growing so rapidly that the next few years should keep Helen busy. Although Helen has dreams for turning her passion for pattern, texture and print into producing her own line of textiles and wallpapers eventually. Everything in the range, even packaging, is designed and produced right here in Dunedin by Helen. She has various methods for producing her work but everything is an original design and concept of Helen’s, and her hands touch every process along the way, with a small team of helpers or local providers, here and there. When you purchase tinch work, you’re supporting an independent designer and her family, for which Helen thanks you. tinch offers free worldwide shipping for orders placed at the online shop on the tinch website. Helen plans to host a Dunedin event to meet locals and showcase the range in the flesh before Christmas. Helen keeps in touch with customers through the tinch Facebook Page and email newsletters so she will share plans that way!

Making wavesThe 2010 America’s Cup in Valencia was viewed by an audience of millions, and it was technology created in Dunedin that helped them understand it. Igtimi (pronounced ig tee mi) produce state of the art tracking systems which have been used at many international events, providing reliable, timely and accurate data used for television graphics and web streaming.

Igtimi makes a comprehensive tracking and recording system used for training and watching world-level competition yachting. The powerfulGPS-based training system enables every move made by the yacht and its sailors to be tracked, recorded, analysed, and remedied by coaches. Capable of processing multiple types of data, including heading, roll pitch,

heart rates, audio, and even wind speed, the units have predominantly been used for yacht and power boat racing. Created by Dunedin entrepreneurs and developers Kylie Robinson and Brent Russell, the Igtimi system offers a complete tracking and data acquisition system solution. “What separates us from the others in the industry is that we provide a unified

solution to both halves of the equation from the hardware systems on the boat to real-time software delivery,” Brent said.

Traditional high end GPS units require a lot of technical know-how to operate. Igtimi’s system uses an automatic data store and customised software to sort the data and

generate user-friendly information for consumers. The data is stored, processed and delivered through a web portal, providing a range of information. This saves time and provides access to analytics that coaches and training staff have never had before.

Robinson and Russell started the company in 2008 and worked closely with Dunedin’s Animation Research Ltd on the Valencia project. Already in use at High Performance Sport New Zealand with the Olympic sailing team, the potential applications for their system are wide ranging. High Performance Sport New Zealand and Igtimi began their relationship in 2009, with mapping out training issues the Olympic Sailing Squad faced. In high performance sailing, the difference between first and the rest of the fleet is measured in less than 1%. Therefore coaches therefore need every advantage they can get while training their sailors. Currently,

learning comes from opinions of coaches written on pieces of paper during training. The problem is that athletes don’t believe it and can’t visualise what they did wrong. YachtBots “One Button” solution produces real-time, visualisation, so coaches and athletes can really see and immediately learn from their mistakes. Simply put, YachtBot increases the learning trajectory of high performance sailors.

The brain child of former employees of the international award-winning Animation Research Ltd, Igtimi’s YachtBot is revolutionising the way sporting sailors train by offering a mine of real time information. The YachtBot is a real-time GPS tracking system which measures GPS position, audio communication, athletes’ heart rates and wind speed and direction. This information is used by members of the Olympic Squad to see if they are traveling further distances and at higher speeds in each training session.

“It’s all about performance analysis. Analysis and tactics” said Brent. The squad members - or anyone who owns a YachtBot - can compare their performances over a number of days and from this, determine whether they are making progress in their training or of if they need to push themselves further. Igtimi is very heavily focused on the ability to analyse data on training sessions and analyse them afterward is the key to improving performance. “You talk about what you want to do, do it, and then talk about how you did” said Managing Director Kylie Robinson. The YachtBot collects its data via its OEM Platform, which not only has cellular communications but also dedicated UHF and VHF radio as a failsafe to ensure no data is lost in transmission.

The YachtBot’s applications have also been expanded to “tracking golf balls at golf tournaments, water metering in remote farm sites, and collection of meteorological data”. Igtimi also plan to expand this technology’s use into other water sports, such as kayaking, rowing, kite surfing and there is even talk of making a personal, human attachable version of the YachtBot, for collecting data on participants in land-based events. The technology is so easily adaptable that Igtimi’s website encourages consumers to contact the company to discuss if it can be harnessed in a way suited to their needs. Igtimi is also keeping with the times in offering an Android app as well as being able to access collected data from their website.

Igtimi was of four New Zealand technology specialists in the finals of the Vodafone Most Innovative Mobile Technology Award of this year’s Hi-Tech Awards. Kylie was excited the company had been nationally recognised by the hi-tech community. “We’ve worked hard for years at the cutting edge of global technology, so to have others recognise our innovation is very rewarding.” The hi-tech sector represents some of New Zealand’s most innovative and successful high-technology businesses. The New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards celebrates the success of New Zealand producers of goods and services from the software, electronics, telecommunications, creative and other high technology industries.

\\ Broad Bay China

Handle with careFormerly a High School History teacher, Sue More has always had a love for old things. The China obsession began with Sue buying an old dinner set many years ago and because it was no longer in production she was always popping in to second hand shops to look for extra bits of it. It occurred to Sue one day that other people must be doing the same thing. “It was just at the time when the internet was starting up so I thought if I picked up bits of dinner sets for other people then I could perhaps sell them on the internet” said Sue. She started collecting up bits and pieces but discovered she didn’t actually enjoy the internet at all, and found sitting in front of the screen all day rather dull.

After their move from Timaru, Sue and her husband made a lot of alterations to their

When Sue More and her husband decided to move from Timaru to Dunedin in 1996, they had to purchase a large storage container... just for Sue’s many, many boxes of China. Now made up of that container, a renovated garage, and two purpose-built rooms, Sue’s Broad Bay China shop is a labyrinth of beautiful treasure.

home in Broad Bay, shifting the garage next door. The storage container Sue’s husband had purchased for their move was added to the garage and those two became converted into the original China shop. The ‘Dinner Set room’ was purpose built later with solid shelving to take the weight of the plates. The latest addition is the haberdashery room, as Sue is the local supplier of buttons, threads, lace and fabrics. Sue’s boxes and boxes of China became the first stock of the shop but she says hardly any of the current stock is original from thirteen years ago, as she has such a high turnover.

In 2000, Sue retired from teaching, with the idea that she would work in their massive, gorgeous garden and pop into the shop whenever someone turned up - however,

it got a bit beyond that. Sue now has four part-time staff now who work one day a week each. Everything is kept in certain places so they can hopefully always find it.

Sue has a large collection of ‘Wish Books’, in which people can list what they are looking for and Sue will keep an eye out, calling if she finds what they want. “Just last week I bought somebody’s personal collection of this Old Country Rose, so at the moment I have a huge stock of that. People have already been rung, I’ve got somebody com-ing down this afternoon to have look at it, she’s a collector” said Sue.

A puzzling new development...

To follow in the footsteps of business creator, Stuart Landsborough who has continually developed his business since opening in 1973, Puzzling World is designing an addition to their Illusion Room complex themed around an illusionary sculpture garden.

Heidi - Stuart’s youngest daughter and her husband Duncan took over the management of the tourist operation seven years ago, and while they have recently completed upgrades to the Illusion Rooms, kitchen and café, the extension will be their first major building project since their arrival.

To mark their 40th year in business Puzzling World will open a $2.5M extension to their Illusion Room complex that will be sure to impress!

Puzzling World already has four different illusion rooms but the new project will create a room roughly the size of all rooms put together and with a mix of outdoor and indoor elements the aim is present a natural space of “surrealist wonder” while making the addition as environmentally friendly as possible. Living Walls, gardens, pathways along with a “green irrigation” scheme will be incorporated in the design to further this aim.

Several overseas trips have inspired the couple to take what they’ve seen abroad and include their ideas in what’s believed to

be the world’s first sculpture garden based on the Illusion theme.

Well-known Wanaka architect Sarah Scott is in charge of design and Nelson sculptor, Derek Ball who made the faces for Puzzling World’s famous Hall of Following Faces, has been commissioned to create several large pieces. Local sculptors including Ernie Maluschnig, Chris Riley and Deane Weastall have also been commissioned for pieces within the room. The plan is to make the garden a truly “kiwi” project by using native plants and showcasing local talent.

Puzzling World has been intriguing people of all ages and nationalities for the past 38 years with its three-dimensional Great Maze, its mix of illusion rooms and diverse range of puzzles and games. The Illusion Sculpture Garden is seen to be - no pun intended, a natural addition to the business as it’s in keeping with their mantra of providing world unique entertainment that not only spans all age brackets but with its primarily visual appeal, all language barriers too.

\\ Christina Perriam

The magic of MerinoFollowing in her mothers’ footsteps, Christina Perriam has turned a lifelong love affair with Merino wool into a successful career. Based in Tarras, Christina’s expanding range of beautiful Merino products will ensure you and your family are wonderfully warm, comfortable and looking great for any occasion.

The Merino sheep is a hardy animal, thriving on the South Island’s rugged but beautiful high country farms. It seems that for this breed, the tougher the environment, the finer and more luxurious the wool it produces. Fashion designer Christina Perriam, well known for her stunning women’s Merino fashion, recently launched a new range, this time for the little people. Suprino Bambino baby and children’s wear is a celebration of what can be achieved with Merino fabric, and of the Kiwi tradition of high country farming.

Christina grew up on Bendigo Station, a vast sheep station near Tarras which produces some of the finest wool in New Zealand. Christina went on to study fashion design at Massey University in Wellington, being awarded for her design and best overall collection at her graduation. Unity Collection, a well-known shop, offered to pick up Christina’s range right away, so began the Christina Perriam brand. Christina moved from Wellington to Dunedin to be the first intake of people for the Dunedin Fashion Incubator, where they nuture young designers offering low rentals, machine usage, mentoring and financial advice.

In 2007, Christina was awarded the Biella Young Merino Ambassador scholarship to Italy to study the process of taking the raw Merino wool and turning it into the beautiful worsted cloth. “This was a very valuable experience for me and I got to spend time at the factories

and offices of some very well known designers and was exposed to a world I had never seen before. It grew my passion for being a designer and showcasing New Zealand Merino wool to the world” said Christina. Christina further pursued her fashion career working and studying in London, Italy and Australia.

Christina’s mother, Heather Perriam, operated the Suprino brand in the 1980s and 90s through the well-known Merino Shop in Tarras. In February 2010, Heather passed away with cancer, so Christina moved back to Tarras and took over her beloved Merino shop, as well as the general store, and opened her own self titled store there too. “It was a challenge to come back to a small place to take over two businesses and continue to grow and understand them. It has been one of the most valuable learning experiences of my life in terms of business but it did take away from fashion development for a couple of years. Now I have an assistant designer and are looking to grow the brand nationally” Christina said.

The high-quality women’s fashion range made under Christina’s self-titled label, and sold through her Tarras store, has recently been joined by a children’s and baby range called “Suprino Bambino”. This range encompasses ages from new born to five year olds, and has already been very successful. Suprino Bambino is Christina’s first baby and children’s range, using the same beautiful wool fabric

but incorporating very original handknitted and handmade embellishments. All the dresses, tops, pants and accessories are made in New Zealand to exacting quality standards that further enhance their longevity. “We realized there were already a lot of brands in that market so we set about creating a label that produces unique and distinctive clothing... something not seen before” Christina said. The little models loved wearing the velvety-soft clothing and parents were happy in the knowledge that they would later be able to hand the pieces on to friends and family, still in beautiful condition.

Christina says she is very pleased to be able to find new ways of utilising Merino wool in products that satisfy the demands of modern consumers. By keeping Merino products current, new markets are created, supporting the future of the wool industry and helping retain high country traditions. The latest additions to the brand are handknited dog jumpers, cable mug warmers and iPhone covers, with a homeware range featuring knitted lamp-shades, throws, pillowcases and hot water bottle covers in the pipeline. At present, the clothing is only available online and in Christina’s self-titled store at Tarras. Due to the success of the Tarras store, Christina and her team are looking to open a other store within the next six months as well as wholesaling the range throughout New Zealand.

Turning tidesAfter dozens of different designs and site evaluations, fourteen consent approvals and eleven years of planning, Central Otago whitewater enthusiasts’ dream of a “whitewater play park” is about to become a reality. Roy Bailey of Central Otago Whitewater discusses the trials and triumphs throughout the process.

Wanaka resident Roy Bailey has been involved with whitewater sports for 35 years, competing in many different forms of the sport, white water slalom, canoe polo, multi sport, as well as recreational and expedition kayaking.

Central Otago Whitewater (COW) was set up in approx 1989, to promote the sport and develop kayaking sites in Central Otago. The club runs a variety of different events; canoe polo during the winter months, slalom events during the summer as well as

kayaking instruction. COW regularly hold the National kayak slalom champs in the area usually at their Roaring Meg site.

The whitewater kayak park has been designed by top whitewater park designer Scott Shipley, of the United States. Located next to the Camp Hill Road bridge at Hawea Flat, the park should be completed by the end of November, and will be a tremendous asset to New Zealand kayakers. However it has been a very long process for Roy, Gordon

Rayner of Alexandra, and the other parties involved. It was sparked when Contact Energy had to apply for resource consent to operate the Clyde and Roxburgh dams. It was the first time that affected parties could claim for compensation. This started a long process of finding out what was possible, how we could best be compensated for loss of white water and who were the right people to get this done. Making sure that what we were going to end up with was the best option we could achieve. The park is being

Page 63: Exclusive November 2012

\\ Central Otago Whitewater

funded by Contact as a mitigation measure, as part of its suite of resource consents for the Clutha catchment, applied for in 2001.

Work was scheduled to start in March but Contact put the project on hold because electricity demand meant river flows could not be reduced for the time required to build the course. The river’s normal operational range must be between 10 and 200 cumecs. The river flow has to be reduced to about three cumecs to allow construction of the park, which Contact only has consent to do during Autumn. However, consent variation was sought from the Otago Regional Council to extend the construction “window” to Spring, when lower water levels are permitted.“Contact Energy have been awesome throughout the whole process. I think that it is something different and interesting for

them also. We’ve had very little negative feedback on the project really, everyone has been supportive” Roy said.

Preparation work began in June, with structural work taking place throughout October and November. Two large weir structures will restrict the flow of the river and create “play waves” for kayakers. River enhancements are being built at the moment and should be completed in 3-4 weeks. Rock for the river enhancements was transported during June from the building site for the National Transport and Toy Museum’s new exhibition hangar, at Wanaka Airport. Fulton Hogan levelled an area for the rock to be stored and created a car park.

After eleven years working on this project, Roy and the COW members just want to enjoy it for a while, before dreaming up their next idea. Plans are in place for running the New Zealand Freestyle Championships at the new park in March 2013. At the moment they are also working on protecting the Nevis River which is very significant, due to it’s remote nature and outstanding white water.

The “upset” this year was a mother duck with 10 ducklings that appeared near the finish line and crossed the line with other plastic ducks... However plastic was still the winner on the day!

With responses as above since launching in 2009, it is no surprise that Beyondsemble has shot into the limelight on the local festival scene and is receiving attention offshore. Not long back from a successful European trip, the band is preparing for a nationwide tour - once again featuring an eclectic mix of original and improvised music merging Celtic, Latin, jazz and gypsy rhythm, all executed with consummate skill and infectious enthusiasm. Featured on this upcoming tour is a change of line-up to include the multi-talented Jon Sanders (guitar, ukulele, bouzouki, vocals) in place of original guitarist Mark Mazengarb, presently pursuing his passion for American guitar music in the United States, and John Ellis on saxophone and clarinet. Continuing with Beyondsemble is founder Craig Denham (accordion, piano, whistles, vocals) and Chris Koole (cajon, percussion, lead vocals).

Welcome to the November issue of Exclusive.

The wider Wanaka area is still experiencing a lot of demand in certain market segments. Modern homes in the $450 - 600k bracket are especially popular at the moment. If you are considering selling, please contact us now for a market appraisal. Construction of houses being erected across greater Wanaka continues as we enter the warmer months.

In this month’s issue we have the development of the Hawea River whitewater play park and of Puzzling World’s extension, we check out Christina Perriam’s Merino goods, and sample Patagonia Chocolate’s volcanic delight.

Please remember to check out all of our Wanaka listings on our new Edinburgh Realty website. The next edition of Exclusive is for December and January, which means if you list your property with us by November 20th your property can feature in Exclusive for two months, providing maximum exposure. That is, of course, if we don’t sell it first.

Kind regards,Mark MillerGeneral Manager
