Welcome to the latest issue of Exclusive.

As we head toward longer days and warmer temperatures, we still appear to be amid a seller’s market. A well-presented property in the mid-price range continues to be the focal point of the majority of buyers we meet. If you are thinking of selling your home, call your local Edinburgh Realty office to arrange for one of our team to come and undertake a free market appraisal, to get an idea of your property’s market value.

In this month’s issue we learn more about the Mosgiel RSA & Community Club, hear of the triumph of the Taieri Rugby Football Club, and enjoy a chocolate brownie from Aurora Café.

The Edinburgh Realty Art Awards opened in early August and 141 artists from all over Otago submitted their work for judging. We were lucky enough to have Jenny Sherman from the Dunedin Public Art Gallery judge the awards, setting a very high standard of selected artworks. A big thanks to Jenny, each of the artists and the Otago Art Society for their efforts in making The Edinburgh Realty Art Awards a huge success yet again in 2012.

Kind regards,Mark MillerGeneral Manager

Wheels over heelsRoller derby is the fastest growing women’s sport in the world and it thrives in Dunedin. A fast-paced contact sport, roller derby bouts pit two teams

of five roller skate-wearing players against each other as they race the oval track in the same direction. The game is a series of short match-ups, which are called jams where both teams designate a scoring player, known as the jammer, who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams make life easier for their own jammer while trying to block the run for the opposing jammer. It is a crazy game to watch and very physical to play. The competitors dress in fishnets, short skirts and carry threatening roller derby names like Anne Thrax and Diva Demolisher to add an endearing edge to the sport. Visit www.dunedinderby.co.nz to try this new sport out or to find out when the next bout will be held at the Edgar Centre.

The City of Dunedin Choir will present Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle at Knox Church on Saturday, September 29 at 7.30pm. It’s typical of the wit of this comic genius that this great mass should be neither “Little” nor “Solemn” as the name implies. Gioachino Antonio Rossini was best known for his operas, and particularly his comic operas, yet there was always a deeper vein of creativity even in his best-known operas such as William Tell, The Thieving Magpie, and The Barber of Seville.

Rossini was one of the brightest flames of creative genius in European music and he rose from rags to riches on the strength of his 39 operas. He toured his works throughout Europe. In London in 1824, eight of Rossini’s operas were performed in one season. The Petite Messe Solennelle (1863) is one of his rare later works.

Soloists for the September 29 concert are Emma Fraser (soprano), Amanda Cole (alto), Julien Van Mellaerts (bass) and Matthew Wilson (tenor). The conductor is David Burchell.

Tickets for the Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle are available from Beggs Musicworks (Cnr Moray Place Cnr Moray Place and Lower Stuart St; or from Knox Church Office; or phone Clare (03) 476-2426. (Cheque or cash only.)

The Mosgiel RSA & Community Club

The Mosgiel Memorial RSA’s first home was the garage of one Bert McCunn. Funds were borrowed and the property at 6 Church Street was bought for $6,000 in 1965. Fundraising enabled the building of a bar and small cool-room, the installation of a dishwasher and toilet. Tables and chairs were purchased and on 30th July 1966, the Mosgiel RSA Chartered Club opened for business. Further alterations were made

The Royal New Zealand Returned Services Association was founded in 1916 and is one of the world’s oldest ex-service organisations, with responsibility to all those who served their Country, irrespective of whether or not they are association members.

including the building of a hall, new bar, store and billiard room, lounge, foyer, kitchen and games room. In 1984 the MMRSA Welfare Office was established to provide meals-on-wheels, transportation and funding support to Veterans, ex-Service people and their spouses. The 1990’s saw the commissioning of a bowling green and pavilion opposite the Club.

Whether witnessing community pride on Anzac Day, Armistice Day or at standing-room-only medal ceremonies, the Club is a source of local stories. The Taieri Herald reports goings-on at the MMRSA almost every week. Already the connection at the heart of the community for many, a valuable support network for people on their own or in need, the Mosgiel RSA is a place to celebrate unique bonds and forge new ones.

\\ The Mosgiel RSA & Community Club

On any given day, the carpark outside is filled with the vehicles of those inside playing Housie, taking an exercise class, enjoying a ladies luncheon or at night, dinner and a tuneful fundraiser. A multitude of different groups and age-groups use the RSA in Mosgiel. Always a lively place where, as the song has it, “Everybody knows your name.”

The Mosgiel RSA holds an extensive collection of memorabilia in trust for the community. The earliest pieces come from the Maori Wars and the Boer War. The collection features a ‘Rogues Gallery’ which faces onto the RSA’s Red Poppy Restaurant, featuring the photographs of young men and women who represented their Country so bravely. It is always moving to see people standing in front of the wall to identify relatives and recall the place they have in their own family histories. Amongst the more moving items are the personal diaries, prayer books and trench embroideries that were stitched by soldiers in the trenches as they waited for the fighting to commence. The MMRSA is justifiably proud of this collection and encourages many school groups to visit and absorb the history.

In 2008 the RSA Executive of the time recognised that things needed to change to ensure the future of the Mosgiel RSA. With the appointment of new CEO Brendon Cross and then Fundraising Coordinator Lois Scott MNZM in November 2010, options were explored, consultation carried out and an informed decision made to re-

develop the Club into a Community Hub for Mosgiel. Since then extensive networking has taken place. Fundraising assistance offered to groups, schools, kindys, church groups and sports clubs - fundraising quiz nights and events are a regular occurrence at the Mosgiel RSA. Membership currently stands at 1400 which is over 10% of Mosgiel’s population.

In 2011, a Steering Committee for the planned upgrade of the Mosgiel RSA was formed. This dynamic committee is chaired by City Councillor Syd Brown, with Stan Rodger, Bill Feather, Kevan McAlwee and Edinburgh Realty’s Mosgiel “Star” Jenny Lambert as well as RSA Executive representatives. Thanks to this committee’s guidance, our first big funding application is now in Wellington.Mosgiel RSA’s new Operations and Finance Manager Alan Muir says, “We have made

some huge changes in the direction of the RSA”. “I am excited about the future of this place and have enormous respect for those members and volunteers who protected their history and built a wonderful venue for the Mosgiel community to enjoy for many years to come”.

Alan wishes to acknowledge the generosity of funders and businesses like Edinburgh Realty for their continued support. “We would not be here without this assistance and for that we are eternally grateful” says Alan. Edinburgh Realty wishes the Mosgiel RSA & Community Club success in their plans for the future upgrade.

The pride of the TaieriThe Taieri Rugby Football Club is on an all-time high after their Premier 1 team’s back-to-back wins in 2011 and 2012. The large contingent of Taieri supporters in the 4000 plus-strong crowd at Forsyth Barr Stadium stood proud as the team won 22-24 in the knuckle-biting game against Dunedin.

The winning team and the shield

The corporate box and the scoreboard reflecting the winning digits at the home ground

For seven long years the Taieri Rugby Football Club didn’t have a Premier 1 team.

Four years ago, when the Club got back into Premiership competition, Keith Kippenberger was told by a few people that they wouldn’t succeed, this however made him even more determined than usual. Keith went to work and developed a winning formula for the club. He used all of the good ideas pulled together from other clubs. The Premier 2 team became the Premier 1 team, so they made a new Premier 2 team. Then they needed a Division 1 Colts team which they had never had before. If they didn’t have a player, they went to the country to find one. 70% of the players are Taieri born and bred; “good wholesome Taieri boys” as Keith says.

The formula worked, as four years on the club has expanded from three teams to five and in 2012, all five teams are in the Top 6 of their competitions. For any club to expand and achieve that much in four years is amazing, even more so for such a well-loved community-based club like Taieri.

The Premier 1 team, coached by Jason McDonald, Graeme Anderson and manager Jared Campbell, has blown everyone in the competition out of the water, last year winning the banner for the first time in fifty years and now this year doing it again! Not only that, but they took out every trophy that was up for grabs. The boys were particularly excited about winning the Speights Challenge Shield and the with twenty crates of beer that came with it...

The community backing of the team, and of the club is fantasic. The very loyal supporters at both home and away games are the envy of many other clubs. Local businesses have come to the party too, sponsoring the teams and the club. Hours of voluntary work goes into maintaining the clubrooms and the grounds, as well as looking after the teams and liasing with other clubs and the Union. “We have one of the best working committees in the Rugby Union and having so much community support makes finding volunteers a lot easier” says Keith.

The Taieri Rugby Club; the pride of the Taieri since 1883.

\\ ShelterBox

ShelterBoxFounded by Rotarian Tom Henderson, a former Royal Navy search and rescue diver, ShelterBox started in 2000 as a project of the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard, Cornwall.

In February 2000, the first 50 ShelterBoxes were consigned to India following an earthquake in the Gujurat province. Since then, almost 122,000 ShelterBoxes have provided shelter, warmth, comfort and dignity to hundreds of thousands of people in over 75 countries, after close to 200 disasters including the Indian Ocean Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina and Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar.

Each ShelterBox contains a family tent, a cooker/stove, thermal blankets, cooking and eating utensils for 10 people, water purification equipment, collapsible water containers, childrens packs, tools and other basic needs. These contents are changed to suit the particular circumstances of the disaster e.g. mosquito nets are added if the boxes are being sent to tropical areas where malaria is a problem. Each box is uniquely numbered so that once a box is deployed, donors can track their box via the ShelterBox website and see where in the world it has gone and whom it has helped.

The boxes are delivered into disaster zones by highly-trained volunteers. ShelterBox Response Team members or SRT’s as they are known, deliver the aid to vulnerable families around the world, following natural or other disasters such as earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, cyclones or conflict.

ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity which provides humanitarian aid worldwide in the form of shelter, warmth and dignity for people displaced by natural and other disasters.

ShelterBox New Zealand is the authorised New Zealand affiliate of the ShelterBox trust and was formed in 2006 as an international project of the Rotary Club of Mosgiel Inc, operating within its Charitable Trust. The Mosgiel Rotary Club ran ShelterBox for the first five years of it’s New Zealand affiliation before nominating directors from around the country to expand their work.

ShelterBox is an independent charity that relies on donations from the public, private clubs and other services to carry out its work. Over $2,000,000 has been raised in New Zealand, which equates to over 1420 boxes. They cost $1500 each, which includes delivery anywhere in the world.

Five trained ShelterBox Response Team members from New Zealand are deployed into disaster zones with the New Zealand ShelterBoxes, to deliver them to the people who need them the most. These five people are based in Auckland, Keri Keri, Bulls and Springs Junction.

Auckland-based SRT Sally Ann Fletcher, who is the only female of the five, was deployed to Fiji recently to assist families after serious floods hit the Fijian mainland and destroyed many homes. ShelterBox response teams were also actively helping in Christchurch after the two major earthquakes.

Pembroke PuttNow the directors of Lake Wanaka Investments Limited, the three men spend two years searching for the perfect place to establish a mini-golf business. The idea developed from the directors noticing a gap in the market for affordable family activities in the heart of Wanaka. The biggest hurdle was finding a suitable section in a central location.

Mini-golf fans are now spoilt for choice in Wanaka with the latest addition, Pembroke Putt, opening for business two months ago. Long-time Wanaka residents and friends since school, Linton Allison (35), Arne Gawn (35) and Greg Richards (33), have talked about building a mini-golf course for a long time - talk that has now become a reality.

After securing a minimum 15-month lease over a prime 1000sqm commercial site at 67 Brownston Street, plans were set in place to open “Pembroke Putt” at the end of June 2012, in time for the school holidays.

The men liaised with Lakes Environmental planners to ensure planned site alterations fell within the parameters of the commercial

zone, meaning no resource consent was required. A site plan was drawn up and the 18 holes were roughly mapped out, with the directors designing the holes themselves.

The men combined their professional skills - Mr Allison is the owner of a graphic design business, Mr Gawn has a landscaping company and Mr Richards is an electrician -

\\ Pembroke Putt

to transform the site during the next seven weeks, working weekends and evenings to get the job done as that was the only time that could be dedicated to the build. The boys were lucky with the weather; although it was freezing and they often had to wait for the frost to thaw before starting work for the day, it only rained once during the construction stage.

All 18 Kiwiana and Lake Wanaka-themed holes are sponsored by local business so some of the holes were adapted to suit the sponsors, being R&K Yule Builders, Rossignol, Placemakers, Wanaka Internet, Laser Electrical, Jolly Earthworks, Controller Freaks, Basecamp, GSD Painters, Creek Cafe and Bar, Torque Marine, Firth, Tidy Design, Fulton Hogan, Warren Rusbridge Transport, Mike Greer Homes, GW

Plumbing and Kustom Hot Rods. Some of the feature holes include a ski-jump, adigger bucket, a sunken dinghy, a road hole and the 18th hole is a loop-de-loop.

Mobile pizza company Francesca’s is also on the lease and has taken up a permanent station next to the mini golf course. Lots of people stop halfway through their round of mini-golf for a pizza and then finish the last 9 holes, or order a pizza to take away after their game.

So far the mini-golf business is exceeding the staff’s expectations. Some days are busier than others but it can never be predicted. Weekends are the busiest time but no two days are the same. Obviously weather dependant being an outdooractivity, Pembroke Putt is also becoming

busier in the evenings as it is getting lighter at night. At this stage Pembroke seems to be getting an even mix of locals and tourists, plus quite a few returning customers already, which is great to see. They have also had a few social functions and birthday parties which they like to encourage. Mini-golf is a great, fun group activity for all ages so head down to Pembroke and get your golf on!

Pembroke Putt is centrally located next to Base Backpackers and across the road from Cinema Paradiso. Call 021 215 2129 for more information

Welcometo ParadisoCinema Paradiso is not your average run-of-the-mill cinema. Step through the doors and be seduced by the smell of freshly baked cookies and homemade pizzas. Quench your thirst with a locally-brewed cold beer while you queue. Pick your seat; a couch, a plane seat or the Cinema Paradiso car. Sit back, relax and enjoy.

Revered by locals and visitors as a Wanaka treasure, Cinema Paradiso appears like it has been pulled straight out of Alice in Wonderland. Oozing with quintessential charm, Cinema Paradiso takes the usual packaged-and-processed version of a trip to the movies, and replaces it with a unique and enjoyable adventure.

Scotsman Calum MacLeod first converted an old electrical sales shop in Ardmore Street into his own Cinema Paradiso by spreading out 50 comfy chairs and couches. Moving this year to a new building to ensure Paradiso could continue providing joy to movie-goers, the cinema now sits happily at 72 Brownston Street in a converted church building.

The small café offers melt-in-the-mouth freshly baked cookies still warm from the oven, a selection of dips, garlic bread, home-made pizza and wraps or, for the really hungry, there’s Thai yellow curry, Paradiso lasagne, fish pie or a steak sandwich.

Wash it all down with a locally brewed cold beer or chilled wine, or warm yourself up with a freshly brewed coffee or hot chocolate. Oh, and don’t forget the yummy cakes, slices and home-made ice-cream!

The best thing is, just like the good old days, there’s an intermission. So if you get the munchies half way through the film, you can stock up during the break. Or if you didn’t have time to have dinner beforehand, order

it before the show and it will be ready at half-time! You could even order a dessert to enjoy after the movie ends. Magic!

Locals know to queue before the doors open, to secure the best seats in the house. Cinema Paradiso is made up entirely comfy old sofas, armchairs you can sink into, airline seats, a lazyboy and even three seats inside an old yellow Morris Minor.

Lose yourself in a Hollywood blockbuster for a couple of hours, seated in premium at-home comfort with stunningly good food.

Asian with a Kiwi flavourIf you’ve never tried roast lamb with mint sauce sushi then you need to visit Yohei café in the Spencer House

Mall, Wanaka. This quirky little eatery offers a range of gluten free asian food that will make you laugh, then have you coming back for more.

“We’re the whole package” says owner John Gordon, “Fresh juices and smoothies, Supreme coffee, great music, friendly staff, free wifi and of course our delicious original food.”

Handy hint - try the $7.00 vegetable curry or a ‘mini pod of ginger lurve’. You’ll be hooked.

Locals are being given the chance to come up with a name for the major new extension at Wanaka’s iconic visitor attraction, Puzzling World. Construction of the 530 square metre complex is at the half way stage with the new attraction due to open in early December. It will be the fifth and largest illusion room at Puzzling World which is also celebrating its 40th year in business. Puzzling World want a name which encompasses what they’re trying to achieve which is to create a unique space that explores the artistic, sculptural side of illusions. The new room will feature some 25 large sculptures, artworks and displays in an environment that seeks to re-create a natural, indoor garden setting. The planned exhibits include living walls, stone carpets, impossible garden seats and hanging waterfalls.

Entries in the name competition can be posted on Puzzling World’s Facebook page or emailed to [email protected]. The winner will be announced on October 1st.

It’s all an illusion...

In this month’s issue we lose ourselves in the comfy couches of Cinema Paradiso, enjoy a round of mini-golf at Pembroke Putt, and sample a favourite from Florence’s Foodstore & Café.
