JCCC BAZAARJust a quick reminder about our annual JCCC Bazaar. It’s coming up on Saturday May 3, 2008 from 12:30pm to 5:30pm. We appreciate the fantastic support of all of the donors and the community. We hope that you will consider helping us out again this year. While we normally accept donations from early in the year, we ask that you do not bring them in until after March 31st this year. Until the construction is finished, we have very limited storage space for your generous donations. We are also looking for any volunteers to help with preparation before and on the day of the Bazaar. Please keep a lookout for more information in our April Newsletter. Thank you again for all your support. We look forward to a successful 2008 Bazaar!

MOVIE NIGHT "TENCHU"Directed by Gosha Hideo and starring Katsu Shintaro and Nakadai Tatsuya, TENCHU is a story of Okada Izo, a low ranking samurai of the Tosa Clan who falls under the influence of Takechi Hanpeita, an aspiring politician, and carries out a series of increasingly brutal asassinations. The film co-stars famed writer Mishima Yukio as Tanaka Shinbei, another famous killer from that era. All the characters are based on real historical figures, and the story and action are according to historian Romulus Hillsborough, “surprisingly accurate”.

2 GENERATIONS: RAPPER NISH RAAWKS AND SANSEI

DAD, BOB MITSURU NISHIKAWAThis month the Heritage Committee is proud to present two well-known musical members of our community: Derek Nishikawa a.k.a. Rapper Nish Raawks, and his karaoke singing father, Robert Mitsuru Nishikawa in the Shokokai Court on Friday March 28, 2008 at 7:00pm. The yonsei (fourth generation JC) rapper has performed at the Powell Street Festival in Vancouver and at the JCCC and is well known in the Toronto music community. His father Bob, 67,

was a Lemon Creek internee who was deported to Hikone, Shiga-ken as a young boy and later returned to Canada. Bob is a familiar face at the JCCC, entertaining on stage for many years. “My grandparents are like my heroes,” says Nish Raawks, born and raised in Scarborough. “Just for the fact that they survived all the bull they went through. They could both speak English and both told me stories about Japan and Vancouver, never negative just positive stories. My grandfather was a ‘classic’ grandfather-type figure except instead of talking while we peeled potatoes, he told me stories while we pounded rice for mochi.” Please join us for this first intergenerational talk with “Nikkei Voice” writer Norm Ibuki. Light refreshments will be served after the talk.

TSURUSHIBINAVisitors to this year’s exceptional popular NJCA-JCCC Oshogatsu-kai had the chance to enjoy a stunning display of Tsurushi Bina Kazari (Hanging Hina Doll Decorations). These beautiful decorations have a long history in Japan where, during the Edo period, families would use these to celebrate the March Girl’s Day Festival. The dolls were made and donated by Sayoh Yabu and her team of generous volunteers. You can look forward to enjoying these Tsurushi Bina at many future JCCC events and, of course, our 2008 Spring Festival.

HARU NO UTAMATSURI AT THE JCCCby Kunio Suyama

WELCOME NEWS! Haru no Utamatsuri (Spring Songfest) will return on April 19, 2008. Co-sponsored by the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, JCCC Karaoke Club and Toronto Geino Aikokai it will be an evening of enjoyment, full of popular enka songs, nostalgic natsumelo songs and a hilarious skit or two. Spring Utamatsuri is presented in a series of songs with particular themes such as: Haru no Uta series, Okuni Meguri series, Matatabi series, Nihoncho series and Koi no Uta Ko-na (corner) series. Haru no Uta Matsuri of course will welcome the season with heartwarming songs symbolic of spring. Okuni Meguri songs will then take you on a sentimental journey through the islands of Japan. Matatabi songs are the happy go-lucky thrills enjoyed by all. If Nihoncho songs are traditional Japanese style love songs, then the ensuing series of Koi no Uta songs, you might say, are the modern version of Japanese love songs. Haru no Utamatsuri, a songfest complemented by odori numbers and skits that will elicit resounding laughter, should be your next not-to-be-missed event. Come early for udon, sushi, bento, zenzai and other delicious snacks. Mark this on your calendar, HARU NO UTAMATSURI at the JCCC Kobayashi Hall, Saturday April 19, 2008 from 7:00pm. Admission will be $15 (reserved seating only). For tickets and information, please call: Evelyn Sato 416-752-6879 Keiko Kuroyama 416-489-9929 Keiko Omori 416-531-2749 Etsuko Doyama 416-291-7002

MOMIJI HEALTH CARE SOCIETY BAZAAR

by Chris Okawara, Momiji Bazaar ChairMomiji Health Care Society staff and volunteers are hard at work planning the upcoming Community Bazaar which will be held on Saturday April 5, 2008 at 3555 Kingston Road at Markham Road from 12:00pm to 3:30pm. This is Momiji’s largest fund-raising event of the year, in support of our many community programs. Please think of Momiji as you identify things you no longer need: plants, Japanese ware, crafts, paperbacks, toys and children’s books are special favorites. The manju, karinto, sushi, and baked goods booths will be glad of your contributions – they are always early sell-outs. Become involved as a volunteer. Come help at our manju and sushi bees the day before: pass on your skills to the next generation (we have jobs for the inexperienced too!); offer your help in setting up, tearing down and in manning the various stations. If you are able to help in any of these tasks, please contact Jovel Patricio at the Momiji office 416-261-6683 to be put in touch with the correct team. Finally, come out April 5th and meet your friends, hunt for treasures and enjoy some Japanese cuisine. We hope to see you all at Momiji Centre!

March 2008

Yone Kobayashi’s LegacyIt wasn’t too long ago when Yone Kobayashi stood in the Japanese Canadian Cultural Cen-tre (JCCC) and honoured us by painting the first eye of the daruma. She made a wish for the successful completion of Phase III con-struction at the Kansei e no Michi, Pathway to Completion, groundbreaking event in the fall of 2007.

On January 5, 2008, after a brief stay in Van-couver General Hospital for pneumonia, Yone died peacefully in her sleep, but her legacy lives on.

Born in Vancouver, on March 30, 1918, Yone has had many accomplishments. From be-ing a seamstress to an office manager in an osteopathic practice, Yone has led an exemplary life. She has travelled the world and taken family trips to Expo ’67, the Maritimes, Yellowstone Park and Vancouver Island, to name a few.

As a founding member and lifetime supporter of the JCCC, alongside her husband Coby, Yone believed in bringing the Japanese community together to one place where there could be an exchange, learning and celebration of tradi-tions. She was known as the Master Chef of shrimp & vegetable tempura, helping the JCCC win many Best Food Awards at the annual Metro Toronto International Caravan festivities. She also served many terms as President of the JCCC’s Women’s Auxiliary.

Coby and Yone’s total financial contributions of $3 million have supported many facets of the JCCC including the Kobayashi Hall, The Cranes National Tribute and upcoming facilities for Phase III construction. Her presence at the Kansei e no Michi groundbreaking event is just an example of her unwavering commitment to the JCCC and to the Japanese Canadian community. Without a doubt, Yone’s hard work, generosity and dedication to our com-munity is greatly appreciated and we honour her memory for that, she will never be forgotten.

The JCCC invites everyone to attend a celebration of Yone’s life, to pay their respects to one of its founding mem-bers. The event takes place on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 2:00 p.m., in the Coby and Yone Kobayashi Hall.

In lieu of koden or flowers, donations to the JCCC would be greatly appreciated and will go towards the Legacy Building Campaign. 6 Garamond Court, North York, Ontario M3C 1Z5. <www.jccc.on.ca>
