Requirements

To earn the National

Service Award a club

must complete one

project in each of the

four service areas and

sponsor two additional

projects from any of

the four areas.

When a club earns

the award they will

receive a banner

patch and individual

lapel pins for each

club member.

Additionally, the club

will receive a banner

patch for each

completed service

project. When the

same project is

completed more than

once in a given year,

the club will receive a

star patch for each

additional completed

service project.

This will be the second July week that we'll not have a noon luncheon. Some of the

members of our club will still be out of town on vacation. If you are one of those

remaining in town this week enjoy the break, catch some rays from the sun, but not too

many, and catch up on your yard work.

Our delegates to the National Convention in New Orleans will be back in time to

report on the happenings at the convention including - election of officers & directors,

changes in the by-laws, and any other significant events that happen to come up.

I know it's hard to believe our club will be 88 years old

this week but it's true. It's been 88 years since Charter President Earl Harrington and

Secretary Seely Johnston were holding the first meeting of the new club at the Inman

Hotel in downtown Champaign. The club would continue to meet at the Inman Hotel

for the next three or four decades. How time flies when you're having fun.

We're working on a program for this week, a day after our club . chartered. One thing's

certain, Nancy will have a tasty chocolate Birthday Cake.

On August 6 & 9, 1945 the United States dropped the world's

first two atom bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively.

This historic event finally convinced the Japanese to announce their surrender to the

Allies just six days later on August 15, 1945 ending World War II. It also began a

new era, the era of the expansion of atomic and nuclear weapons and the "Cold War."

The United States has 109 protected areas

known as National Monuments. We also have

35 National Memorials. The Antiquities Act

of 1906 authorized the president to proclaim

"historic landmarks, historic and prehistoric

structures, and other objects of historic or

scientific interest" as national monuments. The

United States Congress can also establish

National Monuments by legislation.

We'll not be holding a meeting today due to the

Labor Day Holiday, but we will be very busy with

Exchange none the less. All able-bodied members will be in Urbana handing our

American Flags to the children along the Labor Day Parade route.

More details will be forthcoming as we get closer to the

holiday from Committee Chair Frank Scantlebury.

The Labor Day Parade is not as big a parade in terms

of spectators with children but we still need to have

someone to ride in the back of the truck and a couple

members to help the Urbana Exchangites pass out the

flags. We have been handing out between 900-1,300

flags at Labor Day Parades.

Mardi Gras night at the district convention found a very unusual group of Exchange "leaders". On the left we find

the quiet one, Katie Smith, our past Region 3 Vice President from Owatonna, Minnesota. In the middle is yours truly,

Past District President and incoming Champaign Exchange Club President Tom Williams, Sr. Now, I don't know

what to say about the "Court Jester" on the right. Wearing the Court Jester hat, the biggest bead necklace I've ever

seen (maybe I'm just jealous because his necklace was bigger than mine), and a mischievous smile stretching from

Urbana all the way to Murfreesboro, TN, was our soon to be Past National President Don Wright. Boy oh boy, I'll bet

the National Convention in the New Orleans French Quarter this coming week will be a real blast.

A Few More District Convention Photos

Above we see National Exchange Club President Don Wright from Murfreesboro, Tennessee doing something

unusual for him. He is addressing the convention delegates from the podium instead of wandering around the floor

in the front of the room talking without a microphone. Don is very comfortable in front of a crowd and he has a

great sense of humor. Listening to Don talk about Exchange are our Region 3 Vice President Jim Ruzon (left) from

Joliet, then Lincolnland District President-Elect Bill VanKeuren from Mattoon, and hiding behind the pitcher of

water is Lincolnland District President Emy Trotz from Naperville.

Above we see Champaign Exchange Club President Thomas Williams, Jr. accepting the Lincolnland District 100%

Club Award from District President Emy Trotz of Naperville. The club received a certificate and a patch to put on

their banner for meeting a large set of requirements during the 2013-2014 administrative year. In the back left we see

National President Don Wright and Region 3 Vice President Jim Ruzon (Joliet). On the right are District Award

Committee Chairman Scot Warren (Naperville) receiving gossip from District Director Joel Koch (Quincy)

Lincolnland District Convention Spirit Award Committee Chairlady Nancy Williams, center, presents the

2014 Spirit Award to two representatives of the North Chicago Exchange Club. Although there were not as

many clubs vying for the award this year there was no doubt that the North Chicago Club had lots of spirit.

The two highest awards an Exchangite from the Lincolnland District can receive are the Distinguished

Service Award and Exchangite of the Year Award. Above we see an extremely deserving Exchangite

receiving the Exchangite of the Year Award, Helen Cook of the Belleville Exchange Club on the left, from

Lincolnland District President Emy Trotz of Naperville. Among Helen's many accomplishments are she

served as our district president a couple years ago, she's the backbone of the Belleville Club, she's served

on many, many district committees, and most of all, she never says no to a request to help. A great choice!

Russ Finney

West Chester, OH

Russ Finney joined Exchange in 1995. He's been club president for 7 terms and has helped build 2 Exchange Clubs. He obtained 7 new members in the past 3 years and earned his 25 member pin in 2004. He received the Distinguished Club President Award. Russ has served as district director, president & secretary. For the district, he was instrumental in developing the District Strategic Plan.

For the NEC, Russ has served on the Growth, Leadership Development, Exchange Leadership Excellence, Member Development, Strategic Planning, Investment, Budget & Finance, and Exchange University Committees. A certified Exchange Leadership Excellence trainer, he developed the first Exchange University online training course and is a volunteer field representative.

Russ attended the US Air Force Academy & Univ. of Southern California, and has training in finance & aviation. He is a Berkey Fellow, active with the AF Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol and a parishioner. He and his wife Kathie have two grown children and four grandchildren.

Ron Lashmett joined Exchange in 1994. He's held the club offices of president, secretary & treasurer, and currently serves as president-elect of the Crossroads Exchange Club. Highly active in the California/Nevada District, Ron served as district director & president. He developed the first strategic plan and was president of the district foundation. Ron has been named Exchangite of the Year for both his club and district, and has earned his district's Lifetime Achievement Award.

For the NEC, Ron was Region 1 Vice President for 2 terms, and was elected national treasurer for two 2-year terms, serving simultaneously as trustee for the NEC Foundation. As the club builder of 2 clubs, he worked as a sponsor and mentor during the life of the clubs. Ron was named Outstanding Regional vice President in 2005-2006.

Ron attended Mesa Junior College and California State U., Fullerton, and works as a CPA at Lashmett & Associates. Ron was a soccer coach for many years, and he and his wife Shirley have five children.

Dan McQueeney joined Exchange in 1992. He's held the offices of club president, secretary & director, as well as district president, secretary & director. He served as a club builder for 3 Exchange Clubs. Active in his club, Dan has been involved with many programs and social events, and was named Exchangite of the Year by 2 clubs. Dan served 2-terms as district director and was chair-person for New Club Building and Nominating Committees, and served on the Awards Committee.

For the NEC, Dan's served on the Growth, Investment, and Budget & Finance Committees. He was elected Region 10 VP at the 95th National convention. Dan graduated from The Citadel and Armstrong University.. A retired USAF Major and war veteran, he earned many military awards & medals. Dan is currently a semi-retired Consultant with Merrill Lynch. He's an involved alumnus of The Citadel, a member of local historical societies and a 5k race director. He supports the NEC Foundation, is a Berkey Fellow and Dr. North Society member. Dan and his wife Caroline have three children.

Brenda Robinson joined Exchange in 1992. She served as club president and chair of the Fundraising Events & Projects Committees. Brenda has signed 3 new members and helped build 3 Exchange Clubs in the past 3 years. Highly involved in child abuse prevention, Brenda taught about Shaken Baby Syndrome in schools & health fairs, and let her club to earn 2 CARD Awards. She served as an Exchange Parent Aide for 5 years, and was awarded Parent Aide of the Year by the local CAP center.

At the district level, Brenda served as president for 2 terms, and performed various types of training. Brenda was named District Exchangite of the Year, and received the Outstanding District President Award. for the NEC, Brenda served 2 terms as Region 5 Vice President and on the Public Relations, Awards, EXCEL Clubs, Large Clubs, and the NEC Foundation's Berkey Committees.

Brenda attended Fullerton Junior Coll. & California State U. Fullerton. Outside Exchange, she serves on the board of several local children's agencies, and earned awards for community service. A retired investment brokerage office manager, she and husband Robert have 2 children and 8 grandchildren.

Dennis G. Koch, Exchange Club of Quincy,

IL and Past Lincolnland District President,

is running unopposed for re-election to the

National Exchange Club Foundation Board.

Dennis is a good friend and an outstanding

Exchangite. He is the President & Owner

of the Dennis Koch CPA firm in Quincy.
