President’s Message

John B. Winne, President and CEO

It is the time of the year when we often pause to reflect on the year gone by and make plans for the new year which has just begun. Boston Firefighters Credit Union does these same things. 2019 was another great year for your credit union. We have welcomed a large number of new members to the credit union with many of them joining us from the members of the Boston Police Department and their families. We are proud to offer services to the BPD and in order to better understand their needs, we have created the position of Associate Director and welcomed Mike Leary and Marty O’Malley into our board room. From a financial perspective, we have achieved all our goals for the year and continue to lead our peers in most, if not all financial metrics. Furthermore, we once again won the CUNA national award for providing the greatest value to our members. Of all our successes, this is the source of our greatest pride.

So, where do we go from here? The answer is actually quite clear. Boston Firefighters Credit Union has one overarching goal and that is to provide the best possible services to the firefighters and police officers who do business with us on a regular basis. We will continue to do that in 2020. The challenge comes in how to best accomplish this goal. The financial services landscape is evolving rapidly and most of it centers around the manner in which members access their accounts at the credit union. Mobile banking functions, including remote deposit capabilities have become an established norm. On-line loan applications are prevalent in many areas and yet many of our members still want to visit or call the credit union to take advantage of our good old fashion member service.

Our plan is to continue to take advantage of innovation and offer a strong package of electronic services for members seeking the convenience of 24/7 access. We are constantly evaluating our business partners and looking for ways to improve this vital segment of our service offerings. However, we will not waiver on our commitment to the in-person service model. There are times when you need help or can benefit from a suggestion that can only be offered by a human who is able to understand your concerns and deliver a suitable solution. In short, we are trying to be the best of both worlds.

Over the years, BFCU has continued to grow and prosper. We have added new membership groups, expanded our service offerings, added significantly to our staff and committed large amounts of money to electronic services. During this timeframe and as we head into 2020 and beyond, the one thing that never changes is our commitment to first responders and their families. You are our only focus; you are the only members that we serve, and our goal is to improve your financial lives. Please let us help.

Happy New Year.
