Excelling in Life, Led by Faith.

Dear Parents,

On Sunday, we celebrate Mother’s Day and the contribution that mothers have made to our society. Let us give thanks for the love and dedication of all those who have ‘mothered’ us throughout our lives and, at the same time, remember those whose mothers have passed from this world.

OPEN DAY Our annual Open Day, held last Sunday, was an outstanding success. The continued involvement of our students as tour guides, caterers and in conducting practical demonstrations ensured that our College was a living entity where the skills obtained were demonstrated for our guests. I thank our staff for their energy and enthusiasm in setting up demonstrations and exhibitions of student work. It was an outstanding way of showcasing what we do at St Brigid’s to the wider community.

YEAR 7 2018 PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT Many thanks to the prospective families who attended our Parent Information night last night. Parents were informed of the many wonderful initiatives and programs currently being provided to our Year 7 students. I thank Kingsley Dalgleish (Deputy Principal), Antonia Jeffery (Student Welfare Coordinator), Rachel McGennisken (Director of Learning), Kara Gough (Teacher Advisor Coordinator), Sharon Fedke (PAM demonstration) and Year 7 students: Eloise Wills, Noah Brennan and Andrew Taylor and Year 12 Student Leaders: Rani Hogan, Dalton Clough and Ethan Jolley for their presentations to parents.

NAPLAN

Our Year 7 and 9 students have successfully completed their 4 NAPLAN tests. I thank all students for the positive manner in which they have undertaken these tests and to the staff who have supervised the students. Catch-up sittings will occur tomorrow for those students who have missed a NAPLAN test due to a variety of reasons.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK

Next Friday we celebrate the commencement of Catholic Education Week and the strong Brigidine traditions that have laid the foundation for the richness of Catholic Education that we experience here in Horsham. The theme this year is "Strive for the Greater Gifts" (1 Corinthians 12:31). I am often asked about what makes a Catholic School distinctive. I believe we, at St Brigid’s College:

promote a particular view of the person, the community, Australia and the world, centred on the person and teachings of Jesus Christ.

challenge students to find, through God, meaning and value in their lives.

form a part of our church community.

critique our culture, and challenge community values, as an integral part of our Gospel mission.

aim to be a welcoming and reflective community.

espouse values which unite Australia by promoting a citizenship infused by a commitment to social justice.

encourage our students to develop an international perspective on Australia and how our country can identify and respond justly to international obligations.

develop a sense of historical perspective by reflecting on the development of societies and cultures over time, a story of human frailty but of continual efforts to live the Gospel message.

Next Friday we will celebrate Catholic Education Week with Mass at Ss. Michael and John's Church at 11.30am.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Last week Steffi McDonald represented Victoria in the U/18 Tennis Championships. The Victorian team finished in 4th position whilst Steffi reached the Quarter Finals individually. After the Championship, Steffi was selected in the Australian U/18 Tennis team. A phenomenal performance. Congratulations on your achievement, Steffi.

Upon arrival at the Little Desert Nature Lodge we were briskly shown to our dorms before having an enlightening talk on the lodge’s rewilding program and the animals within that program. For many of us this was the first time that anything that had been learnt in class about stewardship really meant something to us. We were able to gain an understanding of why we were on the retreat and why the staff at the lodge are so dedicated to what they do. For the rest of the three days of the retreat we, firstly, participated in activities aimed at getting to know the area around us and what it means to the fauna and people living and working there. These activities include walking around the lodge and Little Desert National Park or visiting the malleefowl avery. Before going into more in depth activities, looking at things such as soil quality in the area, where we were given the chance to go into the bush, where we began soil tests that will aid the staff at the lodge knowing what difference some of the animals, that are lacking in the area, make to the quality not only of the soil but of the habitat in general. We participated in many activities aiding in the upkeep of the lodge, Little Desert National Park and the safety and continued conservation of the animals within. This included mapping out catching locations for counting small ground dwelling fauna and maintaining the fences of the national park to make sure that no foxes or cats can get in, which could potentially harm the native fauna within those fences. Students were lucky enough to have Father Peter join them on the first day of the camp. He conducted a fascinating Mass with different speakers talking about aspects of which were looking at some of the things that we had either learned or were going to learn whilst on the retreat. In addition to this students were also given the opportunity to partake in countless activities that were seen as more of a fun thing to have a go at. Like learning how to throw a boomerang, make damper or build a hut out of things found naturally in the Australian bush.

STUDENT NEWS!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE | Volunteering is a fantastic way to help others. Yesterday five students from St Brigid’s College helped the ladies from the Wimmera Hospice

Care to set up for their upcoming Mother’s Day Function. A simple action of setting up tables and giving someone else 20 minutes of your time made a difference. Pictured is

the team of helpers: Victoria Taylor, Sophie Fechner, Rae (Wimmera Hospice Care), Hannah Sherry, Simone Dyer, Lea (Wimmera Hospice Care) and Kyra Clarke.

Are your students thinking about a career in design? They can immerse themselves in the world of design and kick-start their creative future. Discover Design is a creative school holiday program for Year 10–12 students who would like to learn more about design careers, courses and pathways. Participants will develop a design portfolio, broaden their problem solving and design-thinking skills and work in teams—just like in a real design studio! Discover Design is run by academics who teach Swinburne's design courses so they will get to experience campus life first hand, meet design students and find out more about the courses on offer. Participants will also take home an education pack, a certificate of completion and all of the things they create during the program. Visit the Swinburne event's page to download the workshop program and consent form and find out more about what’s in store. For information about past events, please visit www.discoverdesign.com.au. Choose between a
