What is the most important Challenge?Paul: Inmyexperience it isdefinitely trust ‐and it shows up in the SOQ analysis all thetime,many of the problems and challengesthat we discover and that we coachindividualsand teams toworkonhave theirroots firmly in issues of trust and of coursetrust ismuchharder to build remotely thanwhenpeoplearefacetoface.Annemie: I think that the right culture is animportant factor for success of NWW, aspeoplewill interactdifferently.But culture isnot so easy to get impact on. Climate is aconcretedimensionofcultureandisthereforeeasier to influence.Moreovermuch researchexistsontherelationshipofahealthyclimatewith success factors of companies andorganisations ‐ especially about successfulcopingwithchange.

How do you deal with it?Paul: We coach people to put the issue oftrustontheagenda‐andusingtheSOQhelpspeopletodothisbecauseitisdata‐drivenandtakes some of the emotional and personalaspectsoutof theequation.Wehelppeopleimplement newways of building trustwhenworkingremotelyand inglobal,multi‐culturalteams ‐ it has to be done explicitly andpurposefully because the spontaneity ofinteractionwhichispresentamongco‐locatedteamsisoftenmissing.

We are talking about changes, environment,culture, leadership... all of them areintangible, abstract concepts; can wemeasure them?How can we do it?Paul: Wecanindeedmakemanyoftheseconceptsmoreconcretebymeasuringthem–wecanusetoolsliketheSOQtomeasureclimate,wecanuseassessmentsandcompetencymodels,360sandsurveystomeasureleadership–onewordofcaution,Ialwaysadviseleaderstoseethisdatanotasanendpoint,notassomethingtobedebated,buttoseeitasastartingpointfordialogueanddiscovery,aboutyourselfandaboutthoseyouworkwith–thatistherealpowerofusingtoolssuchasthese.What can the SOQlearn us in the perspectiveof NWWAnnemie:BasedontheninedimensionsoftheSOQ,wecangivesomepracticaltips.Let’shavealookatthedimensionsTrustandDebate:Ifwe lookattrust inthecontextofNNW,wecanalreadysaythat the lesscontactthere is,themore important trustbecomes.The SOQgives legitimacy to talk about trust: indiscussionwiththepeopleinvolved,therecanbeexploredhow trust canbe safeguarded inthe new situation.Opening this discussing isalready a big step forward.
