Dr. Charlie Reiter

Charlie, known better by some of you as Brother Dennet, began his career at Nazareth in September of 1964. His ca-reer spanned many changes at Nazareth that included the transition from a Di-ocesan School to one led by a lay board

of trustees and the change to a co-educational school in 1976. Charlie took on many roles in his 24 years at Naz-areth. “Nazareth was my home for so

many years,” he says. “I grew up there.”

Many of you will remember him in the classroom, teaching French and religion. Some of you will remember him as Mr. Reiter, Senior Class Moderator, the Dep-uty Principal and Chair of the Religion Department. He also worked with Chris-tian Awakening, a three-day retreat for Nazareth students and their peers from other local schools, with co-honoree Pete Holmes. And then some will re-member him as Mr. Reiter, Principal, a role he held for four years. No matter his role, you will remember that Charlie Reiter gave his heart and soul to the

school.

After leaving Nazareth, Charlie served as principal of his alma mater, Mt. St. Joseph High School in Baltimore. He then became president, a role he held for six years. He is now principal at St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis. He still keeps Nazareth close to his heart by contributing his time and expertise to Nazareth’s Board of Trustees. We are honored to call Charlie one of Naz-areth’s best. You can contact Dr. Reiter

Dear Alumni and Friends,

On Saturday, June 11, 2005, the ranks of our alumni swelled by an additional 108 as Nazareth celebrated our 40th Com-mencement Exercise at Brooklyn Col-

lege.

Dr. Arthur Lewin `67 was our guest speaker. Dr. Lewin, a professor at Ba-ruch College, recalled his days at Naz-areth with great fondness and challenged our graduates to continue to pursue

equality and justice in the world.

Dr. Lewin received the Brother Greg-ory Galligan Distinguished Alumnus Award for his dedication and service to education and to Nazareth. Thank you to Dr. Lewin for honoring our graduates

with his inspirational words.

Some excerpts from my final com-

ments to the Class of 2005:

-First and foremost, please remember what has brought you to this day – the faith, hope and love of your family, friends, and teachers who are all part of

your success.

-Remember that the great gifts of life are inside each of you – harmony, cour-

age, conviction, commitment and love.

-Remember your second day of high school, 9-11-01, for on that day you saw the best of man triumph over the worst of man when strangers helped strangers and thousands gave their lives for being free. Realize there is more good than

evil in the world.

-Give thanks for the blessings of free-dom. In Romans, Chapter 6, it states: “There is no true freedom except in the

success of what is good and just.”

-As you leave today, continue to con-duct yourselves in an exemplary manner, so that others will be struck by your

quality of character.

-Continue to grow in wisdom, age, and

grace.

-It has been an honor and privilege to have worked with you these past four

years. Good-bye and God bless!

This issue contains additional stories about the Annual Eugene McCarthy 5k Race, the Xaverian Brothers 150th Anni-versary and more. These few pages give you a brief glimpse into Nazareth’s good

work.

Most importantly, I think all of you should know that the educational mis-sion of Nazareth is strong and reflects the values and faith in the Xaverian

Brothers tradition.

I thank all of you who support us in this ongoing endeavor to teach the gos-

pel to the children of Brooklyn.

Have a great summer!

If I leave here tomorrow

would you still remember me?

Freebird – Lynyrd Skynyrd

Towards the end of the graduation cere-mony for the class of 1980, Vice Princi-pal Richard Picardi quoted Lynyrd Skynyrd. He answered the somewhat rhetorical question in the affirmative and said that the class of 1980 would always be remembered. Twenty-five years have come and gone in what seemed like a matter of moments since Mr. Picardi

spoke those words.

The class of 1980 celebrated its 25th reunion on May 14, 2005, at Lundy’s in Sheepshead Bay. The 25th reunion com-mittee was an offshoot of the 20th year reunion which was held, somewhat late, in 2002. The members of the committee included Raquel Pronesti, Stephanie Selix, Walter Johnsen, Laurie Chebba, Nancy Fusco, Maureen Coyne and Gary

Brienza.

While it took approximately two years to plan, the party itself was over in an instant. Approximately 90 people at-tended, and except for a short period

during dinner, very few people sat.

The committee had hired a DJ, but in some ways it was "wasted money.” While there was room to dance, no one did since conversations never ended. Most high school memories include the good and bad parts of being in or out of a clique. However, on this night, the class of 1980 did not worry about cliques or “jocks vs. guidos.” Instead, the diverse group of people who at-tended the reunion came together as one. Questions about what had been going on over the past 25, punctuated with com-pliments such as “you haven’t changed a bit” (even though we all have) was the

order of the evening.

In addition to the students, other spe-cial guests attended the reunion. Mr. Wuestman came without his 1980’s era beard or, for that matter, his hair (the totally shaved head look works well for him). He did, however, attend with Mrs. Wuestman, also known as Student Council Moderator and Chemistry Teacher Rae Ann D’Aquino, who was as smiling and friendly as we all remem-bered. Mr. Graham also attended look-ing essentially unchanged from 1980. Present Principal Peter Doran acted as the current face of Nazareth. During his

remarks, he complimented the reunion

committee on a job well done.

Darlene D’Aquino made the drive with Mr. and Mrs. Wuestman from Silver Spring, Maryland. As a result, Darlene won the award for coming the greatest distance. The other candidate for the award was Chris Somers, who came all the way from San Francisco but was “disqualified” since he is a member of the class of 1979. It was gratifying to see that our reunion was special enough

for a member of another class to join us.

“Awards” were given in various cate-gories. Brian Lenihan was the recipient of the “Lazarus Award” since the Ex-calibur II had erroneously reported him as having died. We were certainly glad to see that Brian came back to us from the great beyond. Raquel Pronesti re-ceived the award for perpetual prom

queen.

The only down part of the evening was the recent loss of Mrs. Socci. She had attended, despite her illness, the reunion in 2002. A 50-50 raffle was held in her honor, but the gracious winners, Joanne Daurio and her husband, Dom Calise, donated the funds to the school in Mrs.

Socci’s memory.

Raquel Pronesti, providing us all with another example of her innumerable talents, created a Powerpoint presenta-tion which ran continuously during the evening. She took personal photo-graphs, along with portions of our year-book, and created a montage of embar-rassing photographs for all to see. It reminded all of us that, no matter what we look like today, we were once in-credibly scrawny and thin as freshmen and that the late 70s/early 80s were a

scary time for clothes and hair.

To complete the evening, the reunion committee prepared a gift package that included a candle holder with the Naz-areth logo, candle and a booklet of phone numbers, e-mails and addresses of all students. Most importantly, Walter Johnsen prepared a special gift of 2 CDs of music from the 1976-1980 era. Hark-ening back to the rock vs. disco/WPLJ vs. WKTU lunchroom wars, one compi-lation was of rock music, the other

disco.

Many e-mail addresses were ex-changed along with business cards, home phone numbers and other means of communication. Many people agreed to stay connected. My personal experi-ence has already indicated that new and old connections can be made as a result of class reunions. The class of 1980 was a strong class both academically and socially, and will always be remembered as the first class at Nazareth to include women. Happily, it appears that the 40+ year old adults who made up that class continued that legacy over the past 25

years.

One of the great surprises awaiting teachers when we returned to Nazareth for the 2004-2005 school year was the presence of a mobile laptop lab – a rolling cart equipped with 26 brand- new Dell notebook computers, avail-able to any teacher to check out and use in the classroom to broaden the

scope of instructional possibilities.

I have been one of a number of teachers to take advantage of this new tool throughout the course of this year. On one occasion, I used the laptops to demonstrate the proper way to do a web search for valid research sources. On another, I gave my junior English class an online scavenger hunt for in-formation about author Walter Dean Meyers when the class was studying the screenplay “Monster.” The laptops have also been put to work in my classroom in conjunction with the Test Gear SAT preparation program. Test Gear is an online program which al-

Nazareth’s Newest TechnologyNazareth’s Newest TechnologyNazareth’s Newest TechnologyNazareth’s Newest Technology

lows students to take interactive, in-stantly scored practice tests and receive individualized feedback on their per-formance. Nazareth subscribes to this program for its students but being able to demonstrate its effectiveness to my students in the classroom made the pro-gram far more useful and accessible to

more of our SAT-ready juniors.

The laptop lab is a sign of the chang-ing times in which we live. Technology has become an ingrained part of our cul-ture and Nazareth has taken steps to en-sure that our students are not left behind as the electronic age enters schools across the country. Judging from the school’s commitment to technology, it isn’t Nazareth who should worry about being left behind; it’s everybody else! ~

The 14th Annual Eugene McCarthy Run took place on June 18 in Marine Park. After a week of record-breaking heat, the weather turned cooler just in time for the event. The day also featured a 3-on-3

basketball tournament.

This race is run in memory of Marine Major Eugene McCarthy, a 1973 gradu-ate of Nazareth Regional High School. Following graduation from Nazareth, Eugene went on to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Serving his country through active service in the United States Marine Corp, he rose to the rank of Major. He also served with the DEA working to prevent dangerous narcotics from entering our country. In 1991, he was re-activated by the Marine Corp for Operation Desert Storm, during

which he was killed in action.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Nazareth Cares Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to deserving Naz-areth students so they can obtain an out-

standing Catholic education.

Ronel Phillip finished first in the 5K, with a time of 17:45. Brian Rhatigan placed second, and Joseph Chick was third. Amy Chepaitis was the first-place

female runner with a time of 21:08.

Rich Gallo, president of the New York Chapter of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, presented trophies to the winners. Mr. Gallo knew Eugene before his death. Eugene’s brother, Den-nis McCarthy ’70, was unable to attend

due to a work commitment.

We’d like to thank everyone who made the event a success, particularly our T-shirt sponsors: Dr. Leslie I. Nazareth Regional High School and Xaverian High School collaborated on April 16, 2005, in celebration of the Xaverian Brothers’ 150th Anniversary in the United

States.

Students from each school performed in the choir at the Cathedral Basilica of St.

James for a capacity crowd for the special anniversary liturgy.

Xaverian High School’s Pipe and Drum Corps opened the festivities by leading

the 30 Xaverian Brothers into St. James to begin the mass.

Bishop Joseph Sullivan presided at the mass and thanked the Xaverian Brothers

for their dedication and service to education in Brooklyn.

The combined school choirs were outstanding with their hymns of praise that included: “Christ be our Light,” “Hear I am, Lord,” and “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee.” Special thanks to the students and teachers, Mr. Joe Lipinski from Xaverian High School and Nazareth’s own Ms. Jeannette Boursiquot, for working with the

students so successfully.

The celebration continued with a reception and dinner at the Brooklyn Marriott. Dr. Robert Muccigrosso, our former principal, welcomed everyone to the celebration

and Rev. Albert Kenny led us in a prayer of thanks.

Brother Arthur Caliman, General Superior for the Xaverian Brothers, was the keynote speaker. Brother Art reflected on the history, current challenges, and future of the Xaverian Brothers as they continue to educate the youth of the world in the

Xaverian tradition.

Thank you to Brother Art, Brother Lawrence Harvey, Brother Bonaventure Scully, Brother Dan Skola, Barry Fitzpatrick, Paul Moses, and Tim King from our own Board of Trustees and especially to Sal Ferrera and Joe Marino from Xaverian High

School. ~Pete M. Doran, Principal

In the late 1970s Pete returned to an earlier interest and started to teach for-eign languages, French and Latin. Around this same time his friendship with a colleague, Ms. Joan Gallager, became more serious, and the couple

married in 1981.

By the late 1980s, the enrollment of the school had diminished quite a bit, and the role of department chair was eliminated. Not interested in returning to a full-time teaching position, Pete, with very mixed feelings, decided to leave and take a part-time job teaching Latin at a public school in Nassau County, from which he retired in June of 2004 and is “re-retiring” this year after filling an unexpected vacancy at the school this past winter and spring. However, he feels as if he never left Nazareth be-cause, as he states, “most if not all of my dearest friends are former students and

colleagues from Nazareth.”

Cecilia Kennon Socci (in memoriam)

Cecilia worked in Nazareth’s math department from 1971 until 1980. She was the first woman to teach in the de-partment. She was one of the best loved teachers at the school for many years. Known for her smiling countenance and friendly manner, Cecilia served as mod-erator of the math club and junior varsity math team. In 1978, she led the team to a fifth-place finish out of 31 schools. She also participated in the ill-fated

Women’s Faculty Basketball Team.

Cecilia left Nazareth to give birth to her son, Patrick Liam. She later returned to serve on Nazareth’s board of trustees, lending her expertise on matters of cur-riculum development. Cecilia died ear-

lier this year.

125 Women from the Class of 1980

Nazareth is also honoring the 125 women from the class of 1980, the first group of girls to attend the school. These trailblazing women contributed im-mensely to the school when they joined the boys and are now making strides in their professional, volunteer, and family

lives.

Graduation Speech by Juan MatosGraduation Speech by Juan MatosGraduation Speech by Juan MatosGraduation Speech by Juan Matos

Good morning Mr. Doran, Mrs. Gil, Ms. Boursiquot, Dr. Lewin, family, friends, and fellow classmates. I am happy and honored to be standing here to represent the class of 2005. In front of you today, an incredible group of people will be graduating. I believe that this has proba-bly been one of the most interesting group of seniors who have ever walked out of Nazareth’s doors. Because we are such an eclectic group, we were able to learn countless things from each other. Each one of us brought something unique to our class to make it better. Four years ago, we came together as strangers; but today, we are leaving here

as family.

This graduation symbolizes a door closing on the past behind us. And now, we look ahead to the future. Some of us might look back to reminisce about our youth. Some will try to re-open the door in order to remember all the good times; while others will make sure the door is shut tight, lock it, and throw away the key. But the past is hard to escape, be-cause it is not something that can be locked behind a door and never seen again. The future will always be built from the voices and teachings of the past. We are at this point in our lives because of the support from so many people, something I call a “driving force.” This force is so powerful because it consists of so much positive energy that our parents, teachers, relatives, and friends have given us. At a young age, we were taught many things that will take us far in life, whether it was as sim-ple as riding a bike or as complicated as AP Calculus. We were taught to peddle in order to reach our destination and to think in order to find the answers. And the answers we find, we must continue to pass down so that future generations

can also accomplish their goals.

But even with all the positive energy we receive from the people around us, it can be terrifying to take that first step out into the world. There will always be that little voice in our heads that tells us that we are not good enough. That is probably because the world tells us that we have to be flawless in order to make it in life. But it’s not about being perfect, it’s about being the best we can be. It is

unrealistic to believe that we can be per-fect. Thus the one thing we should focus on is happiness and making decisions that we can look back on and be content with. So don’t be trapped into thinking we can’t make it if we don’t have every-thing we are “supposed to have.” To quote a line from the movie “A Cinder-ella Story,” “Don’t let the fear of strik-ing out keep you from playing the game.” If we keep this idea with us, as we continue forward in life, there will be no end to the number of great things we can accomplish. However, nothing can be done without the people sitting be-hind us, our parents. My parents have been behind me 100 percent since day one, as I’m sure all of your parents have been. But I am blessed to not only have parents at home, I also have gained a mother here at Nazareth, Ms. Caputo. So for all the parents, if you don’t hear “thank you” or “I love you” often enough, it’s probably because we don’t know how to say it, or just don’t want to admit how important you are in our

lives.

The class of 2005, our incredible jour-ney together here has finished, and we are about to embark on a new one. We will be going our separate ways, hope-fully finding one another again someday. Always remember everything you have learned here, because it will help you reach true happiness, whether it is to become a famous athlete, an engineer, a doctor, a lawyer, or anything else that you set your mind to. So I leave you with a poem that I think sums up our

reason for being here today.

I asked for Strength ... And God gave

me difficulties to make me strong.

I asked for Wisdom … And God gave

me problems to solve.

I asked for Prosperity … And God gave

me a brain and brawn to work.

I asked for Courage … And God gave

me obstacles to overcome.

I asked for Favors … And God gave me

opportunities.

I received nothing that I wanted … But

received everything I needed.

and Speaker Dr. Arthur

Although most people first think of writing a check when making a contribution, there are other means of giving. Many offer tax savings, which can be of benefit to both the donor and

the school.

Matching Gifts

Some companies have policies of matching current and/or retired employees’ charitable gifts to double (or more than double) the contribution. These programs are administered

through each firm’s personnel office.

Life Insurance

Nazareth Regional High School may be named as the beneficiary of a policy or ownership of the policy may be

transferred to the school.

Real Estate

Real Estate can be an excellent gift because the donor may claim an income tax deduction for the value of the gift and avoid paying a capital gains tax on

the appreciation of the property.

Life Income Gifts

One can make a gift of cash, securities, or other assets to Nazareth Regional

High School and receive both income for life and a charitable tax deduction in return. A variety of trust arrangements

can facilitate such a gift.

Bequests

A bequest in will is another means of contributing to Nazareth Regional High School. An individual may give either an item or other assets. Pecuniary bequests meet the needs of many donors because they provide the school with a percentage of the estate that remains after payments are made to all other

heirs.

Retirement Plans

At the death of the beneficiary, the remainder plan (s) is heavily taxed. Such plans include 401(k) accounts, which are subject to income and excise taxes and may also be diminished by estate taxes. The bulk of the tax burden may be avoided if the remainder value of the plan is bequeathed to a non–profit organization such as Nazareth Regional

High School.

The Gift of Appreciation

Appreciated stock can provide an attractive means of giving. Securities may be contributed by placing them with

a registered broker, bank, or agent to be held for Nazareth Regional High School. This may provide a tax deduction at the fair market value of the securities at the time of transfer and allow you to avoid the capital gains tax liability. The Development Office should be notified of your gift by letter or telephone and

the securities will then be transferred.

Yourself and Loved OnesYourself and Loved OnesYourself and Loved OnesYourself and Loved Ones

There are a variety of trust options, including charitable remainder annuity trust, charitable remainder unitrust, and revocable charitable remainder trusts. You can also consider deeding your home to Nazareth Regional High School now, but retaining the right to live in the home for life. A gift of home now allows for a sizeable current income tax charitable deduction, provides estate tax

benefits and saves probate costs.

For the third consecutive year, the mem-bers of The Brother’s United have raised $1000 toward The Kenny Belizaire Scholarship Fund (instituted in remem-brance of our fallen classmate and mem-ber Kenny Belizaire `08). Through the tireless efforts of the members, the school’s climate has become a more enjoyable place. From dress down days to Winter and Spring dances, to Great Adventure Trips, Brother’s United con-

tinues to enliven the spirit of our school.

This year we have been even more fortunate. We have received more than $2000 in outside private donations for the 2004-2005 school year. Mrs. Manelle Belizaire (Kenny’s mom) has dedicated herself and pledged her assis-tance to the scholarship. Mrs. Belizaire has appealed to her family, friends, and co-workers inviting them to keep

recipient for the 2005-2006 school year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Belizaire and the members of The Brother’s United for all their hard work and efforts. Kenny’s spirit will live
