Series EX560 and EX760 Systems OverviewSeries EX560 and EX760 systems are Steelhead® EX appliances designed for small office deployments. The following table summarizes the Series EX560 and EX760 hardware platforms.

IMPORTANT: You must upgrade to RiOS v7.0.2 and EX v1.0.1 to enable Granite functionality.

For environmental, physical, and power specifications, see "Technical Specifications" on page 18 and "Power Requirements and Consumption" on page 19.

Front-Panel Features and Indicator LightsFigure 1-1 shows the controls, connectors, and indicator lights located on the system's front panel (shown with the optional front bezel removed). Table 1-2 provides descriptions of the front-panel features.

1 Power-on indicator/ power button

The power-on indicator lights when the system power is on.

The power button controls the DC power supply output to the system. Use the power button to perform a graceful shutdown before you remove the system from the AC power source.

NOTE: When the system bezel is installed, the power button is not accessible.

2 HDD activity indicator Lights up when the hard disk drive (HDD) is in use.

3 System diagnostic indicator lights (4)

The four diagnostic indicator lights display error codes during system startup. See "System Diagnostic Indicator Lights" on page 9.

4 System status indicator (On both the front and back panels) Lights up orange when the system needs attention due to a problem. Lights up blue when the system hardware is operating normally.

NOTE: To determine the current status of the RiOS software, check the Management Console status bar.

5 System identification button

(On both the front and back panels) Enables you to locate a particular system within a rack. When either of the buttons is pushed, the system status indicators on the front and back panels light up blue until one of the buttons is pushed again.

7 SSD Solid-state drive on module that holds the Riverbed Optimization System (RiOS) software and data store.

1 LAN-WAN ports Provides access to the 10/100/1000 Base-TX LAN-WAN interface pairs on the bezel of the four-port network interface card (NIC).

• The LAN port connects the system to a LAN switch. using a straight-through cable.

• A WAN port connects the system to the WAN router. If the system is deployed between two switches, use a straight-through cable Otherwise, use a crossover cable.

NOTE: A label on the rear of the cover identifies the ports as W1, L1, W0, and L0:

The corresponding interface names for the ports are wan0_1, lan0_1, wan0_0, and lan0_0.

2 Console port Connects the system to a terminal device using a serial null-modem cable so that you can access the configuration wizard and the Riverbed Command-Line Interface (CLI).

3 Video port (Three-row, 15-pin female DE-15 connector on both the front and back panels) Can be used to connect the system to an optional VGA monitor using a VGA cable.

4 USB ports (2) (On both the front and back panels) Can be used to connect the system to optional USB devices, such as a keyboard and mouse. The ports are USB 2.0-compliant.

5 Ethernet connectors (2) Embedded 10/100/1000 Base-T management interface connectors.

• The port labeled PRI is the Primary port that connects the system to a LAN switch and enables you to connect to the Management Console and the Riverbed Command-Line Interface (CLI).

• The port labeled AUX is the Auxiliary port that provides an additional management interface for a secondary network.

NOTE: The Primary and Auxiliary ports cannot share the same network subnet.

6 System status indicator (On both the front and back panels) Lights up orange when the system needs attention due to a problem. Lights up blue when the system hardware is operating normally.

NOTE: To determine the current status of the RiOS software, check the Management Console status bar.

7 System identification button

(On both the front and back panels) Enables you to locate a particular system within a rack. When either of the buttons is pushed, the system status indicators on the front and back panels light up blue until one of the buttons is pushed again.

8 Power supply connector Connects the system to the AC power source.

9 Retention clip Secures the power cable.

LAN and WAN Port Indicator LightsTwo LAN-WAN interface pairs are provided by the included 1 GbE TX copper network interface card (NIC). The status of each port is indicated by four columns of three LEDs adjacent to the four ports. The LAN and WAN ports are located at the system back panel, as shown in Figure 1-2, "Back-Panel Features and Indicator Lights" on page 5.

Figure 1-3 shows the locations of the LAN and WAN ports and the port status indicator lights. Table 1-4 lists the port name, interface name, and location of status lights for each port. Table 1-5 describes the codes for the port indicator lights.

In the Steelhead Management Console and in the Riverbed Command-Line Interface (CLI), you reference the LAN and WAN ports by their interface names. The interface names for the gigabit Ethernet ports are formed by combining the port type (lan or wan), the number of the slot containing the NIC (0), and the number of the port pair (0 or 1): lan0_0, wan0_0, lan0_1, and wan0_1.

NOTE: In Series EX560 and EX760 systems, the LAN and WAN port pairs are numbered in descending order (1, 0) from left to right.

System Diagnostic Indicator LightsA row of four system diagnostic indicator lights on the system front panel displays error codes during system startup.

Table 1-6 lists the causes and possible corrective actions associated with the system diagnostic indicator light codes. A highlighted circle indicates the light is on; a non-highlighted circle indicates the light is off.

Field Replaceable UnitsSeries EX560 and EX760 systems contain several field replaceable units (FRUs) that you or a certified service technician can troubleshoot, remove from the system, and replace without having to send the system to a repair facility.

IMPORTANT: Perform troubleshooting or repairs only as directed in the product documentation or by the online or telephone service and support team. All other servicing should be performed by a certified service technician only. Your warranty does not cover damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Riverbed. Read and follow the safety instructions in the Safety and Compliance Guide.

Table 1-8 describes the field replaceable units available for Series EX560 and EX760 systems.

If the system front panel displays a diagnostic indicator code that refers to a system component that is not field serviceable or replaceable, the corrective action described in Table 1-6, "Codes for System Diagnostic Indicator Lights" on page 9, instructs you to contact Riverbed Support.

About the Front Bezel and the System CoverThe system is enclosed by an optional front bezel and a system cover. To service the field replaceable units within the system, remove the bezel and cover.

When the optional front bezel is installed, the bezel blocks your access to all front-panel features and indicators:

Removing the System Cover1 Turn off the system, and then disconnect the system from the power source.

NOTE: Before you remove the system cover, always turn off the system and and disconnect the system from the power source. Leaving power on can cause permanent electrical damage to electrical components in your system.

2 Rotate the latch release lock counter clockwise to the unlocked position. See Figure 2-4.

3 Grasp the cover on both sides while pressing your thumbs on the latch release lock and the indent, carefully slide the cover toward the back of the system, and lift it away from the system.

slightly towards the back of the system, so that the pins on the inner edge of the cover are aligned with the chassis hooks.

About the Cooling ShroudThe cooling shroud covers the processor, heat sink, and memory modules, and provides airflow to these components. Airflow is facilitated by the system fan modules, which are positioned directly behind the cooling shroud.

To gain physical access to the system memory modules or the system fans, you temporarily remove the cooling shroud.

About the Memory Sockets and Memory ModulesThe system board for Series EX560 and EX760 system have four memory module sockets for system memory. See "Inside the System" on page 23.

Each two-socket set is organized into two channels to the CPU. The first socket of each channel is marked with white release levers. See "System Board Connectors" on page 24.

Series EX560 and EX760 systems use 4 GB unbuffered ECC DIMMs (UDIMMs). Series EX560 systems without Granite licensing contain 8 GB of system memory. Series EX560 systems with Granite licensing require 16 GB of system memory. Series EX760 systems contain 16 GB of system memory, regardless of Granite licensing.

IMPORTANT: You must upgrade to RiOS v7.0.2 and EX v1.0.1 to enable Granite functionality.

Keep the following points in mind when servicing the memory modules:

• Grounded wrist strap—To prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage, wear a grounded wrist strap when handling memory modules. A memory module damaged by ESD can eventually result in problems that are difficult to diagnose.

If you do not have a wrist strap, before touching electronic components such as memory modules or network interface cards, ground yourself—dissipate static electricity from your body or clothing—by touching an unpainted, grounded metal object (such as the metal frame inside the system).

• Handle modules by the card edges only—Always handle a memory module by the card edges and avoid touching the components on the module.

• Possible cause of system halt and no display—An invalid memory module configuration can cause your system to halt at startup without video output.

Supported Memory Module ConfigurationsTable 2-2 shows the supported configurations of 4 GB memory modules in Series EX560 and EX760 systems. Socket numbers are labeled on the left side of each socket. The socket labeled 2 is nearest to the 24-pin power connector.

1 If the system is not operational, turn off the system and then disconnect the system from the power source. Wait at least 10 seconds and then reconnect the system to the power source.

2 Turn on the system and then note the messages on the screen.

If an error message indicates a fault with a specific memory module, go to step 12.

3 Turn off the system and then disconnect the system from the power source.

4 Open the system. See "Removing the Front Bezel" on page 27 and "Removing the System Cover" on page 28.

5 Wear a grounding wrist strap.

6 Remove the cooling shroud. See "Removing the Cooling Shroud" on page 31.

7 Locate the four memory modules. See Figure 2-1, "Inside the System" on page 23 and Figure 2-2, "System Board Connectors" on page 24.

CAUTION: The memory modules and heat sink can get very hot during normal operation. Ensure that the memory modules and heat sink have had sufficient time to cool before you touch them.

8 Check that the memory module sockets are populated correctly. See "Supported Memory Module Configurations" on page 34.

9 Reseat the memory modules in their sockets. For details, see step 7 on page 36.

10 Install the cooling shroud. See "Installing the Cooling Shroud" on page 32.

11 Close the system. See "Installing the System Cover" on page 29 and "Installing the Front Bezel" on page 27.

12 Reconnect the system to the power source, and turn on the system.

13 As the system boots, observe any error message that appears and the diagnostic indicators on the front of the system.

14 If the memory problem persists, you need to replace the faulty memory module. Contact Riverbed Support at https://support.riverbed.com.

Replacing a Memory Module

8 Align the memory module's edge connector with the alignment key of the memory module socket, and insert the memory module in the socket. The memory module socket has an alignment key that allows you to install the memory module in the socket in only one way.

IMPORTANT: Handle each memory module only on either card edge, and avoid touching the middle of the memory module.

9 Press down on the memory module with your thumbs to lock the memory module into the socket. When the memory module is properly seated in the socket, the ejectors on the memory module socket align with the ejectors on the other sockets that have memory modules installed.

10 Repeat step 7 through step 9 of this procedure to install the remaining memory modules. See "Supported Memory Module Configurations" on page 34.

11 Install the cooling shroud. See "Installing the Cooling Shroud" on page 32.

12 Close the system cover. See "Installing the System Cover" on page 29 and "Installing the Front Bezel" on page 27.

13 Reconnect the system to the power source, and turn on the system.

About the System FansYour system contains three single-motor 40x40x28 fans to cool the processor, expansion card, and memory modules.

NOTE: The system also contains a fourth fan, located near the left side of the system and attached to the power supply unit. The fan attached to the power supply unit is not a field serviceable or field replaceable part.

You can locate a faulty fan by using the RiOS CLI command show stats fan at the Management Console. The command output displays the current RPM and error status of the fan that you specify.

Keep the following points in mind when servicing the system fans:

• If any individual system fan is faulty, Riverbed recommends that you replace all three fans. Replacement fans are available in kits containing three fans.

• Hot-swap removal or installation of system fans is not supported.

• Do not attempt to operate the system without all three system fans.

Troubleshooting the System Fans

9 Repeat step 4 through step 8 to replace all three system fans.

Series EX560 and EX760 systems support one 4-port GbE TX copper NIC installed in an expansion-card riser. The NIC is not hot-swappable.

Troubleshooting the Network Interface Card

• If the link indicator does not light, check the cable connection.

• Use another connector on the switch or hub.

2 Ensure that all network cables are of the proper type and do not exceed the maximum length.

3 Turn off the system, and then disconnect the system from the power source.

4 Disconnect the Ethernet cables from the LAN and WAN ports.

5 Open the system. See "Removing the Front Bezel" on page 27 and "Removing the System Cover" on page 28.

6 Wear a grounding wrist strap.

7 Make sure that the NIC edge connector is firmly seated in the expansion-card riser. See Figure 2-8, "Removing and Installing the NIC" on page 43.

9 Reconnect the system to the power source, and then turn on the system.

6 Grasp the old or failed NIC by its edges and carefully remove it from the connector on the expansion-card riser.

7 Holding the new or replacement NIC by its edges, position the card so that the card-edge connector aligns with the expansion-card connector on the expansion-card riser.

8 Insert the card-edge connector firmly into the expansion-card connector until the card is fully seated.

9 Close the expansion-card latch. See Figure 2-8.

About the Hard Disk DriveEX560 and EX760 systems support one 3.5-inch SATA hard disk drive (HDD). The HDD is attached to a drive carrier, and the HDD and drive carrier are installed internally in the system. The HDD is not front-swappable. See Figure 2-1, "Inside the System" on page 23.

Two SATA connectors are located on the back of the HDD. See Figure 2-2 on "System Board Connectors" on page 24.

• The receptacle on the left is used to connect the HDD to the power supply unit (PSU).

• The receptacle on the right is used to connect the HDD to the integrated SATA controller, through the SATA port labeled SATA_B on the system board.

Replacement hard disk drives are available as an assembly consisting of a hard disk drive installed in a drive carrier.

1 Turn off the system, and then disconnect the system from the power source.

2 Open the system. See "Removing the Front Bezel" on page 27 and "Removing the System Cover" on page 28.

3 Make sure that one end of the SATA data cable is properly connected to the HDD and that the other end of the cable is properly connected to the SATA_B port on the system board. See Figure 2-2, "System Board Connectors" on page 24.

4 Make sure that the 5-wire SATA power cable from the PSU is properly connected to the HDD.

5 Close the system. See "Installing the System Cover" on page 29 and "Installing the Front Bezel" on page 27.

6 Reconnect the system to the power source, and then turn on the system.

7 If the problem persists, contact Riverbed Support at https://support.riverbed.com.

Replacing the Hard Disk Drive

IMPORTANT: Troubleshoot or replace FRUs only. Troubleshoot or replace FRUs only as directed in the product documentation or as directed by the Riverbed online or telephone service and support team. All other servicing should be performed by a Riverbed certified service technician. Your warranty does not cover damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Riverbed.

1 Turn off the system, and then disconnect the system from the power source.

2 Open the system. See "Removing the Front Bezel" on page 27 and "Removing the System Cover" on page 28.

3 Disconnect the SATA power and data cables from the back of the hard drive.

4 Remove the old or failed hard disk drive and attached drive carrier from the chassis. See Figure 2-9.

a While pulling the carrier release pin up, grip the drive carrier and slide it away from the chassis wall.

b Lift the drive carrier away from the system.

5 Install the new or replacement hard disk drive and attached drive carrier into the chassis.

a Align the four slots under the drive carrier with the four tabs on the chassis. See Figure 2-9.

b Slide the drive carrier toward the chassis wall till it snaps into place.

6 Connect the SATA power and data cables to the two receptacles at the back of the hard drive. See Figure 2-9, "Removing and Installing a 3.5-Inch Hard Drive" on page 47.

7 Close the system. See "Installing the System Cover" on page 29 and "Installing the Front Bezel" on page 27.

8 Reconnect the system to the power source, and then turn on the system.
