Chapter 3. Coupling the trailer 3.1 Check before coupling

• Check the trailer on the following points: - Curtain and buckles - Rear doors - Tyres and rims (example. Brake spots or side wall

damages) - Air bags (extra attention at train terminals) - Roof and cantrails - Outside of the headboard

In case of damage immediately report to Fleetcontrol and planning (to prevent delays) by phone or via CarierWeb, also (when possible or required) ask for a recheck form and fill in a Trailer condition report (TCR).

• Check if load papers are present (document tube or in the back of the trailer), when there are no papers present immediately inform your planning about this and ask for information for filling out the CMR. Never drive without papers.

• The trailer needs to meet up with al legal requirements.

• The trailer always needs to be closed properly, possibly close again, tension the buckle again and re-seal. Always inform your planning about this. (write the new seal number on the CMR and give to the planning).

• Place the truck as straight as possible in front of the trailer (to prevent damaging), lower the air suspension, make sure that the level of the fifth wheel is below the level of the trailer. Slowly drive backwards until the fifth wheel is fully underneath the front of the trailer.

BE AWARE! Make sure you are in the driver’s seat when operating the air suspension, the hand brake is free so you can

slightly brake with your foot, so the truck can roll together with the trailer. If you don’t do this the air suspension can give a hard bang when you take the hand brake of.

Than raise the air suspension.

Fifth wheel underneath the front of the trailer (don’t drive to far underneath the trailer)

3.3 After coupling

After coupling switch of the engine, the contact and lights. Only connect the light, air and ABS after. This to prevent possible short circuits, EBS or ABS problems to happen.

Always connect the EBS/ABS cable! Check after connecting the warning lights on the dashboard. Every driver in Western Europe obligated by law to use the EBS/ABS cable between truck and trailer. The authorities are checking this on a regular basis and write out fines when this is not as requested. In the UK there are even more check on this issue, the fines there are very high and they will also give points on drivers and operator licenses when you drive without EBS/ABS or when the warning light is on. Because of the strict regulations in the UK it is very important to also report all problems on the continent directly to Fleetcontrol. When there are serious problems in England because of not reporting EBS/ABS faults (transshipment or call-outs for example) you can be held liable for all costs and consequences regarding this incident. When you find a EBS/ABS fault (warning light on dashboard) report this ECC-Fleetcontrol (0031-773202525).

3.4 EBS/ABS faults The EBS/ABS system of mounted for you and your fellow road users safety. It reduces the chance of over steering, jack knifing of the combination, guarantees a shorter brake distance and keeps the combination controllably in an emergency stop!

When after coupling unfortunately an EBS/ABS problem will occur you will have to take of the cable, switch of the engine and contact for at least 15 seconds. Place back the EBS/ABS cable and switch the engine back on. Check if the warning light goes on again, if so try another EBS/ABS cable between truck and trailer. When the warning light comes back on again contact ECC Fleetcontrol (0031-773202525)immediately.

3.6 Papers and seals

Check if al papers are present, (mostly in the document tube or in the back of the) when there are no papers present in the trailer always contact your planning immediately and fill a CMR according to the information you receive from your planning.

When the trailer is sealed, break this seals, take the papers out and mount a new seal, write the new seal number onto the CMR and inform your planning about this new seal and number.

3.7 Trailer tyres and brakes

It can happen that the brakes on the trailer are stuck, this problem can occur depending on the weather or the load for example and is not always easy to recognize for the driver. There for to prevent driving with a blocked wheel follow the following instructions: Mark al tyres with vertical chalk stripes, after that drive 1 meter to the front and check if all wheels have moved freely. Combined you can check all tyres on brake spots or damages. May one or more brakes are blocked this will be visible through the markings(stripes) on the tyres not having moved. Be extra aware during winter- or summer periods after a longer time of standstill or when freezing. See pictures:

After this drive 1 meter to the front, check the wheels again for blocked wheel or brake spots.

Check the tyres before and after on brake spots, when there is a brake spot visable ALWAYS report this to Fleetcontrol and when possible get a recheck.

3.8 Coupling in the harbour You have to report yourself at the harbour for:

Vehicle condition report (VCR) or the check in/out pictures.

Dock-pass (release trailer).

Envelope with the necessary loading papers like the CMR (always write the seal number on the CMR and with automotive loads on the “pick-up sheets” ).

Check if there is more damage to the trailer then is visible on the VCR or video gate. When damage to the trailer is clearly visible don’t drive but always ask for a recheck or VCR at the shipping company first!!! (When in doubt first ask at the harbour for the procedures regarding damages before coupling the trailer! ). Check if the required papers are present (document tube or in the back of the trailer). Per shipping company of terminal there are other rules for issuing a recheck. The most important terminals are described in chapter 6. When you have problems getting a recheck immediately contact ECC Fleetcontrol. 3.9 Checks before coupling Before coupling the trailer always check the following

Technical state/condition of the trailer, does it meet legal requirements? Is there any visible damage?

If trailer (curtain, doors) are correctly closed en if TIR cords and seal are mounted in the right way (when necessary properly close, re-seal the trailer write the new seal number on the CMR and report to your planning)

Is the load properly secured with the right amount of span sets (when necessary secure the load with extra span sets). When checked or being in an accident you can better have to many span sets than less!!

Is the seal intact and is the seal number right? (When replaced always write the new seal number on the CMR and inform your planning)

Before dropping the trailer, first dismount air hoses, EBS/ABS cable and power cable. BE AWARE!!! Always be extra alert in the cases below with the presence of all papers and necessary documents:

• Hazardous goods (hazard cards) • Non EU goods (customs documents) • Vauxhall loads (pick-up sheets)

When there are no documents or papers available in cases mentioned above immediately contact Ewals Cargo Care. It is strictly prohibited to drive without these!! Found problems of damages have to be signed off by the shipping or handling company on a VCR. When the shipping company refuses to fill out a VCR don’t debate with the port personnel but always contact Ewals Cargo Care Fleetcontrol. When there are no differences are found the VCR and Dock pass needs to be signed by the driver.

3.10 Dropping at train terminals

• When coupling or dropping at the train terminal you should always have a reference number, this is provided to the driver by the planning.

• Trailer needs to be in a good condition, curtain tightly tensioned, properly closed, no tears or loose batches, TIR cable and seal present, door properly closed and the load cannot press into the curtain. The yellow marked plates on the side of a Huckepack trailer (grabbing points) have to be free.

• Don’t mount span sets above those points!!

3.11 Dropping empty trailers Before dropping an empty trailer at a customer or parking’s we have one standard which has to be followed by every driver and which is appreciated by all customers and colleges. We can divide our trailers in 2 categories.

Trailers without fixed straps:

• Trailer has to be fully empty. Make sure there are no span sets, empty pallets or packaging material in the floor.

• Trailer has to be clean from the inside: Wipe out the trailer from the inside.

3.12 Necessary span sets Spansets collection. When I driver needs spansets the driver needs to inform his trucking planner with the request for spansets. The Trucking planner has to inform the span set collection point per e-mail with the following information:

Haullier name

License plate truck

Amount of straps needed

Estimated time of Arrival.

Some points also require a file number. Only after the span set distribution point has received this information per e-mail from an authorized person. The distribution point will hand over spansets to a driver. Reporting spansets used after loading. After loading the driver needs to report the amount straps used to secure the load. The trucking planner needs to fill-in the amount of straps used in his system. This information is divided into 2 kinds of straps:

Loose straps you get from the strap distribution points.

Fixed straps that are mounted to the trailer.

The driver needs to give information about both of these kinds of straps. Loose spansets Fixed spansets

4.2 Washing of equipment Ewals Cargo Care attaches great importance to clean and taken care of equipment. The driver and the equipment are the daily representative of Ewals Cargo Care on the road and at our customers. Ewals Cargo Care expects from haulliers and drivers to wash trailers on their own initiative at an approved washing facility. Your truck gets washed for free. 4.3 Instructions SMS service washing facilities Before a driver plans to visit a truck wash, they can check via this feature whether or not a trailer is allowed to be

cleaned. The text message must contain the following info:

Customer code, (3 digits): EWA (will always remain the same)

Area code of the preferred truck wash (3 digits): ZBR

Fleet number of the trailer

Note! There should be a space between each of the three variables, the trailer number however needs to be written with no spaces. Example A driver is heading towards Genk together with CCH 1901, the text message should look like this:

EWA GNK CCH1901 This can be send to the following Belgian number:

0032 493 24 94 94 The driver will receive a prompt response with the info if the trailer can be washed or not. If it’s allowed they will also receive the address of the truck wash. Below you will find all data together with the area codes from all participating truck washes.

4.4 Accepted washing facilities wasstraten Out of the facilities connected to our online system you can find all other accepted washing facilities through Europe where our trailer can be washed combined with your truck.

Chapter 5. Trailer instructions 5.1 General ECC demands from every driver that he or she makes sure all TIR cables or lacing belts are properly mounted and/or closed before going on a public road.

Required fifth wheel height for Mega trailers max. 0,95 Meter

When the fifth wheel height of the truck exceeds 95 cm the total height of the truck/trailer combination exceeds the legal maximum on the European continent of 4,00 meter. Authorities everywhere are checking this and mainly in the Rotterdam and Switzerland area’s excessive fines are issued for this. Our Mega trailers are exclusively equipped with a so called ‘euro’ plug (standard) Be aware that a ‘DIN’ plug (caravan) cannot be used. The trailer is equipped with a duomatic air coupling, this has to be used at all times on the European continent. When you use the ‘C’ couplings (English, Swedish) the trailer go up 15 cm on the axles and will exceed the maximum height of 4,00 meter.

5.2 Air suspension / Brakes All ECC mega trailers are equipped with an air suspension with 2 driving positions. Here for you find 2 different types of air couplings on our trailers, see below:

We expect all our haulliers to check all air hoses and couplings on the truck annually. This to prevent for example minor air leakages because of which can result in binding brakes and end can lead to hazardous fire! When the trailer is coupled onto a mega truck (original 95 cm) and by trucks up to a fifth wheel height of 1,05 m, the duomatic coupling needs to be used at all times. When coupling with a standard truck, fifth wheel height 1,05 meters or higher, the ‘C’ couplings need to be used. When using the ‘C’ couplings the air suspension will raise 15 cm so the trailer will be in a straight line behind the truck. This will also increase the life expectation of the trailers air suspension. If the trailer is coupled with the right couplings, you still should always do a visible check if the trailer is indeed on the right ride height.

Duomatic English ‘C’ couplings

Controlling hand brake The red button pulled out means the hand brake is ON! Never drive as long as this is the case! Always check before driving if the hand brake button is pushed in and de breaks are “free”.

Further you can visably check the air bags if the air suspension has the right height. The space between the rubber of the airbag and the trailing arm has to be about 4 cm coupled onto a 95 cm mega truck.

Problems with the air suspension How to handle when you have problems with the air suspension: Is there an air leakage? If yes, where? Is the COLAS handle in the driving position, vertically and pulled out? When you still suffer problems after above checks with the air suspension and the air suspension is still not correct or even no air in the system at all, check the right hide rods. These rods have to be in an angle of 90°. These rods may NOT being bent!!!!

NEVER bent on this linkage yourself!! When suffering problems always contact Fleetcontrol.

Fixed lights Check the light before leaving. When the trailer light are not functioning as required you can contact Fleetcontrol or when possible replace a light bulb yourself. See instruction below: Dismount the lens by loosening the 4 screws, replace the broken light bulb (unipolar). This is mounted with a bayonet locking (push and twist to the left). Be aware when mounting the lens back on that the rubber inside the lighting house is mounted properly, otherwise the chance of a short circuit is high due to moist in the lighting unit. When there is LED light mounted never repair this by yourself always contact Fleetcontrol in this case.

Never change the wiring of the trailer lights.

5.4 Checking wheel nuts When the word 'tighten' of 'natrekken' is written onto the tyre this means the wheel has been loose and needs to be tightened. When a wheel is changed over during a breakdown you should also write ‘tighten’ on the tyre to make sure your colleges know about this. Also the driver should, before coupling, do a random check on the wheel nuts per wheel. (torque 65 kg/m)

5.5 Trailer tires The tire pressure regularly needs to checked visually. When in doubt you can change the pressure yourself. (9 bar/120psi) May blows out occur due to driving with a low tyre pressure, than ECC will have the karkas checked by experts if there is any liability to the driver and also forward the costs to the perpetrator. This is also the case with side wall damages.

From 2011 all our tyres are equipped with an RFID-chip . Through this we have more control over our tyres and we have the possibility to trace them.

5.6 Usage of the rear doors From 2008 all Ewals Cargo Care trailers are equipped with fixed rear doors. When coupling these trailers always give extra attention to the rear doors on your visual check on damages. For the strength of the trailer, load safety and securing it is really important that the doors are properly closed. Every door had 2 locks on the top and on the bottom, all 4 has to be closed properly. When this is not the case always first check if the lifting roof mechanism is closed as it should be.

When opening the lifting roof you can lock the doors safely to prevent the doors from opening or closing due to winds or other circumstances.

5.7 Using the rear flap and cross straps. Because of the height of a mega trailer these are equipped with a rear curtain flap combined with cross straps or rear doors for the lateral stability of the superstructure. It is essential for the safety that the rear curtain flap and cross straps are always closed properly:

Be aware that with closing of the rear flap the lacing belts are pulled through all lacing rings of the curtain. The TIR cord always goes through the bottom vertically mounted ring together with the lacing belt to lock this belt in place.

5.8 Uprights To enlarge the space when loading from the side with bigger loads you have the possibility to remove the uprights and create more space when loading. Be aware that with the CCE trailers you can only remove one upright at once to prevent the roof from bending. Instruction Krone/CSH uprights Make sure you first place the upright straight in front of the upright pocket and have the lever at a 135 degree angle when closing and opening, this to prevent the locking mechanism to break down and not being able to mount the upright back in place again.

Be aware !! As is visible on the second picture you can’t close the upright locking mechanism in a 90 degree angle. This will result in the handle or locking mechanism to break. Opening in reverse.

5.9 Rear landings, handling at a load dock. All Mega trailer are equipped with a lifting lowering system. This system is partly necessary for lifting the trailer at a load dock and securing the trailer with the rear landing legs.

When unlocking the handle make sure you retain the landing leg with your other hand to stop it from falling uncontrolled. You can drop the landing leg now easily in the central position en lock it again. Always make sure the landing legs swivel range is free from any obstacles! Be aware! Only operate the landing legs when they are BOTH in their vertical position! NEVER operate them when horizontal.

By using the Colas valve the trailer can be put leveled with the loading ramp and locked onto the landing legs. (See instruction Colas valve in chapter 4.2 Air suspension)

Always pull the Colas valve handle towards you before driving! Always use the rear landing legs during loading or unloading for the safety of the loading personel.

5.10 Front landing legs During coupling you have to do an extra check on the fixation of the dolly wheels on the front landing legs. Because of the maximum height of the trailers at LorryRail they take of these dolly wheels off to lower the trailer. Check the presence of these wheels and if they are mounted in the right way with an “R” clip or safely mounted split pin. When the wheels aren’t mounted in the right way the risk is that you lose them on the road with all possible danger.

5.11 Usage of fixed straps From 2009 all our trailers are equipped with 16 fixed straps. Follow the instruction below before the trailer gets loaded to optimize this system without ‘throwing’ the straps over the load.

1. Lift a strap with for example the curtain bar on both sides onto the ‘finger’ on the roof. 2. The load can be placed into the trailer now. 3. Tighten the strap with the ratchet and the strap will automatically fall out of the ‘fingers’ and around the

load.

5.12 Lifting roof All our Mega trailers are equipped with a lifting roof. By lifting the roof it can be easier to load or unload. Most of our trailers are equipped with a roof lifting system at the 4 corner posts. Several types have an additional middle upright equipped with a lifting post as well. Be aware:

For all trailer series counts to first check if all buckles are disconnected before lifting the roof.

Remove the curtain bar at the front and back from the locking mechanism by lifting the handle by approximately 3 cm’s.

Make sure the rear doors of rear curtain flap are loosened as explained.

There are several different types of roof lifting mechanisms in use on our trailer. Below the most common systems are explained:

Van Hool: All ECC Mega trailers are equipped with a lifting roof, by raising the roof loading and/or offloading becomes easier and we have the possibility to put higher cargo in the trailer. All Van Hool trailer have the mechanism mentioned below on all 4 corner posts and the middle uprights.

1. Loosen all buckles and make sure the back flap curtain is loose from the back door.

2. Loosen the locking clip at the bottom of the lever. Always secure the lever with your other

hand.

3. Loosen the lever and push it 180° above, with this the roof will raise about 20 centimeters.

Tips for safe working

Always use your hand palm to fully lift the lever.

Stretch the handle fully, This is 180° until the handle falls into a lock again.

Always stay on the side of the lever of the lifting mechanism, this to make sure the lever cannot hit you when this loosens.

Instruction lowering lifting roof 1. Unlock the safety pal, by pushing your full hand onto the lever and upright you can prevent the lever from coming off suddenly. 2. With the other hand you can move the safety pal up. 3. Let the lever move easily towards you, always hold the lever securely until the lever has lowered 180° to prevent it from suddenly loosening. The lever will be automatically secured with the safety pal above. 4. Place back the locking pin on the bottom. The roof of a Mega trailer considerably thinner and therefore less strong than a standard trailer. Important:

Never walkover the Mega trailers roof.

Loading via the roof is not possible with trailers without a “S” in the fleet number.

Only trailers with CCS or CSH fleet numbers have a sliding roof.

5.14 Prepare trailer for tire loads and train shipments Trailers which being dropped at customers for tire transport or being dropped at train terminals have to be dropped off and prepared with extra care. Mainly the closing of the curtain is very important, if the instruction is not followed, the possible resultant fees will be charged.

Be aware of the roof and door being closed in the right way when delivering a trailer to the train terminal.

5.15 Driving backwards with Mega trailers When you have to drive backwards with an opened tailgate before loading or offloading it is possible that the tailgate will hang very close to the ground. Especially when driving into a loading slope. Always be aware to have enough ground clearance with the tailgate. Also be aware of the following when driving a trailer backwards to a loading dock which is equipped with rear doors. When the doors are opened use the handles on the side to fix the doors into position so they can’t suddenly open.

Further be aware of high thresholds when driving backwards, these can damage the airbags.

5.17 Side loads CSH/Krone trailers Within particular high side loads it is very important to be aware of how to open the trailers side to prevent the load and trailer from being damaged during loading. ALWAYS slide all 3 upright together to one side of the trailer and the curtain as far as possible to the other side of the trailer to prevent the cantrail from bending to make sure the right insertion height of 3,10 meter for the load will be reached.

Chapter 6. Load securing

Load securing You as the driver are responsible for securing the load. You have to judge how the load has to be secured. More often we see that our customers have neat instructions how a specific load has to be secured. We kindly ask to follow up these instructions. When there are no instructions available: this means you as driver are the one to decide how and with which materials the load needs to be secured to meet all legal requirements. This isn’t easy and there are several factors which are of influence to how the load has to be secured. Below you will find several tips how to secure the load. Factors which influence which load securing is required;

6.1 Weight: Weight is of course one of the major factors which influences securing the load. For example a 20 ton load needs more resources to strap than a 1 ton load.

20 TON 1 TON

Page 61: Ewals Cargo Care Fleetcontrol Ewals Cargo Care Fleetcontrol€¦ · 3.000 trailers and 400 trucks we arrange over 5.000 transports daily within Europe and further afield. As a result,

6.2 Friction Important it is to know how much friction there is between the loading floor and the load. Loads with high friction is less likely to slide. Factors which have a negative outcome on the friction: sand or ice. Always make sure the loading floor is properly cleaned. Sand or gravel can lower the friction between load and floor up to 100%!!

The friction between the load and floor can be raised with rubber friction mats. Accidentally the customer will require these to be used.

6.3 Blocking You can secure the load by blocking it. All ECC trailers are designed to block the load. This is recorded in the EN 12642 XL norm. The walls of our trailers are perfectly suitable to block the load. Very important is that the load has contact with the headboard and side walls.

No contact with head board!

No contact with side walls!

Page 63: Ewals Cargo Care Fleetcontrol Ewals Cargo Care Fleetcontrol€¦ · 3.000 trailers and 400 trucks we arrange over 5.000 transports daily within Europe and further afield. As a result,

When the weight distribution allows, always try to load against the headboard. Also space between the load an sidewalls is not according to regulations. The space between the load and the side walls can be a maximum of 4 cm. A trailer is 2.48 meters wide. The majority of palletized loads are 1,20 meters wide. This gives you a total span of 2,40 meters and when put in the middle of the trailer this leaves you 4 cm on both sides or the load. Load securing will than been taken over by the side walls(blocking). Also see example below where a 20 ton load (steel boxes, 1,2 meter wide) is properly secured by the trailer. Only in the rear there is no contact with the rear doors, therefor the load has to be secured in the back.

Page 64: Ewals Cargo Care Fleetcontrol Ewals Cargo Care Fleetcontrol€¦ · 3.000 trailers and 400 trucks we arrange over 5.000 transports daily within Europe and further afield. As a result,

6.4 Straps Load loose in the trailer (no contact with the side walls) has to be secured with straps. To calculate the amount of straps required to for properly securing the load there are several formulas invented. However these are far to complicate to explain. You can find them in the EN 12195-1 norm when you want to learn more about these. For a calculation you can always contact ECC Fleetcontrol. The technical people in the Fleetcontrol are trained to make a calculation like this. Label: On the label on each strap/ratchet you can find important information. The 2 most important ones are the pulling force of the strap (LC) and the tension force (Stf).

Examples of securing the load Maximum tension force of the ratchet (Stf) All Ewals Cargo Care ratchets have a maximum tension force (Stf) of 400kg.

Indirect; Stf (Standard tension force) 400 daN (=Kg)

Direct; LC (Lashing Capacity) 2500 daN (=Kg)

Page 65: Ewals Cargo Care Fleetcontrol Ewals Cargo Care Fleetcontrol€¦ · 3.000 trailers and 400 trucks we arrange over 5.000 transports daily within Europe and further afield. As a result,

The load above is strapped down with 2 straps. The straps are pulled over the load. This is what we call indirect securing. You can see this as only placing 2 weights on top of the load 2 x 400kg = 800 kg. When making an emergency stop the load can easily slide away from under the straps! Maximum tension force of the strap (LC). All Ewals Cargo Care straps have a maximum tension force of 2500 kg.

The load above is secured with only 1 strap. The strap is now pulled around the load. This is what we call direct securing. With this method you are much more efficient. You can now calculate the actual maximum tension force of the strap (2500 kg). The strap is hooked in on the right and left side of the trailers floor, this means the strap blocks 2 x 2500 + 5000 kg!

Example 4 Securing big bags by means of ‘Crosslassing’

General Keep the following rules in mind;

- Make sure the loading floor is clean - Make use of the head board and side walls as much as possible - Use as many direct strapping as possible (straps around instead of over the load) - Don’t use damaged straps - Don’t block the load: secure with straps! - When in doubt, call ECC Fleetcontrol, they can calculate the exact amount of straps.

• Position straps diagonal • Create a ‘Cross’ per 4

bags • Around last 2 bags; web

7.8 Brittany Ferries Portsmouth: When the trailer is damaged always leave the trailer in the parking bay and drive solo to the recheck office. This office is on your left when you enter the terminal grounds, the building where also the passengers terminal is based.

7.10 Delivering Deutsche Bahn / Viking Rail (Train terminals) Hannover, Göteborg, Kornwestheim: Every trailer which gets shipped by train, has to cope with very strict requirements requested by Deutsche Bahn. Keep in mind that a train drives with 140 km/h and due to winds a small curtain damage a lead to bigger damages. When this happens the whole train has to be stopped with big and expensive delays. Let extra goed op de volgende zaken als een trailer aangekoppeld wordt voor inleveren bij een van de terminals;

Curtain damages

Curtain has to be fully tensioned, check this when picking up the trailer before going to the train terminal!

Buckles all have to be present, fully tensioned and functional.

Doors have to be properly closed

Roof has to be fully closed

Roof rubber (rain flap) must be free of tears Also you need to have a damage report made from every damaged trailer and sent this to ECC Fleetcontrol. 7.11 Picking up LorryRail (Train terminals) Bettembourg and Le Boulou: Leave the trailer in the parking bay and go to the office at the terminals entrance. Ask here for a recheck or “FORMULAIRE de RESTITUTION D´UNE SEMI-REMORQUE”.

7.12 Delivering and picking up Samskip van Dieren For all terminals (Duisburg, Göteborg, Helsingborg en Katrineholm) the rules are that for both delivering as picking up you have to get a damage report. Doesn’t matter if there is damage or not. These forms all need to be send to ECC Fleetcontrol.

7.13 Eurotunnel When entering the Eurotunnel premises all driver are obligate to drive through the scanning device with 10 km/h, The same system DFDS uses for lane 1 & 5.

After this check you as the driver has the choice to have an extra check done on CO2 ( 5 lanes ) or drive straight to the French border control.

Ewals Cargo Care strongly suggests all drivers to have the CO2 check carried out. After this check you can get your CMR stamped and signed that you have has this check carried out. This is also THE PROVE for having this check done at the UK border control.

In case of illegals being found in your trailer we can check all documents regarding checks up to 14 days from Eurotunnel. Be aware: the fine per illegal immigrant is 2500 GBP. The UK border control carries out random checks with dogs and hartbeatscans.

7.14 DFDS Calais When entering the DFDS premises in Calais you can choose 5 different checking lanes. Lane 1 and 5 are scan systems where you have to drive through with 10 km/h, the disadvantage of this system is that illegals can hide behind metal panels or paper rolls.

After this check it is possible to have a 2nd check carried out when driven through lane 1 or 5 to have the CO2 check carried out as well. We strongly suggest you always have these checks done.
