WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORTFor an individual with a physical challenge, finding a park or playground that can be at least partially accommodating has become easier in recent years. However, for an individual with cognitive, sensory or other physical challenges, there remains no park in the state of Wisconsin designed to meet their specific needs.

This population is significant – an estimated 12,190 people over the age of 5 have a disability in La Crosse County. That is 12% of the population.

Children and adults with special needs benefit from an enclosed play environment where they can safely explore and play with others of varied abilities. The All Abilities Trane Park Project will be designed to be fun and accessible; a community within a community that can bring together individuals of all ages – from toddlers to seniors – and all abilities to experience the simple, everyday joy of outside play.

DID YOU KNOW?People with disabilities make up the nation’s largest minority group and it is the only minority group that anyone can join at any time.

I work a lot with parents of children with special needs, and what I would hear from them over, and over, and over again is that on a beautiful summer day there is no place to take their children to play.

THE VISION & THE IMPACTProviding a just-right level of challenge, the All Abilities Trane Park will offer everyone opportunities to succeed. With specially-designed activity zones, all individuals can play, learn, and grow together – developing strength and skills by simply having fun.

Born out of a need in the community, the Park will provide an environment for those with cognitive, sensory, or physical challenges that encourages growth and socialization through play. It will not only benefit La Crosse County, but create a valued destination for the entire region.

With the All Abilities Trane Park Project, we are sending a clear message to current residents and anyone considering a move to the area – we provide an environment for those with special needs that cannot be found in any other Midwest community. In fact, with this park project, La Crosse can provide its residents with the kind of park that only exists in a handful of communities throughout the nation.

La Crosse area employers will benefit from the impact that this park has on employee recruitment and retention, as families choose communities that offer the resources that they need.

WHAT IS AN ALL ABILITIES PARK?An all abilities park supports activity for anyone, regardless of age or ability. Within an enclosed perimeter, this sensory-rich environment enables individuals to develop physically, socially, and emotionally.

PHASE 2 ZONES

CLIMBING ZONEThe climbing zone will include a variety of climbing structures ranging from simple to complex. The climbing zone will provide multiple opportunities to engage in motor planning activities for individuals of all ages and abilities while enhancing their vestibular system and promoting mental flexibility.

Individuals will engage their body’s large and small muscles by climbing up, down, over, under, around and through both stable and moving climbers.

Some climbing structures will have predictable climbing patterns while others will be less predictable providing a variety of challenges.

Climbing opportunities will also include multi-directional climbing with and against gravity as well as transverse climbing on a graded slope.

The climbing elements in this zone and the climbing features incorporated throughout the park’s other playground structures will provide individuals the opportunity to develop gravitation security and body awareness while promoting bilateral coordination through reciprocal movement patterns and facilitation of trunk/core musculature.

Designed to be explored either individually or with a group.

CHILDREN’S THEATREHere is your time to shine! This feature includes a theatre stage and play tower to provide individuals the opportunity to imagine and explore!

Pretend play will create opportunities for individuals to role play, use their imagination, and develop their socio-emotional skills.

Pretend play is valuable in further developing an individual’s cognitive and social skills.

The multi-purpose stage will be the platform for a variety of uses including pretend play by individuals or groups as well as providing a showcase for community performances, shows, and educational opportunities.

ZONE FEATURES

SLIDING ZONEThe slide zone will include slides of various designs and materials.

The non-static roller slide will create a multi-sensory experience stimulating the tactile, vestibular, and proprioceptive sensory systems.

Wider slides will encourage side-by-side interactive play with peers, family members, or a new friend.

Individuals will have the opportunity to develop or refine their motor planning skills as they navigate up and down the hillside through various sliding and climbing structures.

A graded walking path and transfer stations on slides will provide individuals using mobility devices the same sliding experiences.

Opportunities for social interaction will occur naturally as individuals take turns, slide with others or create new games and ways to move and play throughout the zone.
