This year is the 60th anniver-sary of Little League baseball inForest Park. A diamond anniver-sary — on the diamond.

In April 1952, The Forest ParkReview reported that LittleLeague was coming to ForestPark.

“A chance for local boys under13 years old to play organized baseball with uniforms and allthis summer has loomed up,” de-clared the Review’s front page.

By May, Emery A. Parichy, own-er of the Parichy Bloomer Girlsbaseball team, was elected president of Forest Park Little League, along with officers Robert Dowd, Roger William s and Otto Roeder. Some 250 boys tried out for four teams at Parichy stadium, with Parichy vowing to create more teams the next year so more boys could play.

The first coaches for the Yankees were Glenn Schlicting and Bob Fowlie. The Cubs were coached by Art Schwie and Bill Schloman. John and Tony Zaphel coached the Phillies and “Boots” Becker and Mike Red led the White Sox.

Names of those first boys from the past pop up in sports coverage from the era, including Bob Marema, Jim and Terry Hora, Ed Clapsad-dle, Eddie Vince, Phil Barnes, Bob Feller, Ken Rodeck, Arnold Siegert, Bob Murphy, Frank Sible and Philip Wolfe, James Lienhardt, Micky Herman, Wallie Notlin, Ken Hicks, Ellis

Mills, Richard Lolli, Gary Exler, Ron Havorka,Bob Dowd, Billy Rose, Ron Buchanan, Paul Ta-gliola and Paul Johnson.

The first season lasted nine weeks, end-ing in a heartbreaking 4-0 loss in an All Starbattle with the longer-established Oak ParkLittle League. But congratulations were had allaround as Oak Park’s coach admitted that, “theForest Park team is better than the River For-est, Maywood, Franklin Park and some of thestate teams he has seen.”

In 1952 Forest Park Review Editor Claude Walker wrote, “I notice that the sponsors ofthe Little League are doing a good job training nearly a hundred youngsters under twelve tobuild healthy and strong bodies and inciden-tally good minds.”

We believe the same can be said of our LittleLeague coaches today — for both boys and girls.

Ten year old Forest Park native, Dylan Bart lett, came in first in the Pitch Hit and Run contest at Wrigley Field on Memorial Day. He was presented with a plaque, intro-duced to the crowd during the pre-game cer-emonies and may have a chance to compete for a trip to the All Star Game.

“I am happy that I won and now have a chance to go to the All-Star game, that would be cool,” he said.

Dylan qualified for the Major League-spon-sored event at Sectionals on Mother’s Day in Chicago Ridge. Dylan hit the target with his pitches 6 out of 6 times. In the hitting con-test, he batted off a tee and aimed at a line in center field. He ended-up with the best dis-tance and accuracy. Finally, Dylan ran from second base to home in 9.25 seconds-flat on a diamond with 90 foot base paths.

Dylan has been working hard for this

competition, practicing in batting cages at Stella’s in Lyons and having his dad, Kevin, pitch to him in the Forest Park cages. Kevin Bartlett competed in MLB Pitch Hit and Run himself when he was a kid and ended up fin-ishing second in his region.

Dylan plays for two different teams in For-est Park: one is a traveling team and the other is the Giants in the Minors. Dylan plays first base and pitcher but his favorite position is catcher, as White Sox catcher A. J. Pierzynski is his role model. Dylan already has gotten the chance to be on the field of U.S. Cellular with his teammates.

About Wrigley Field, Dylan said it was “Awesome, a great experience. But I am still a Sox fan.”

After finishing first on the Wrigley Field diamond, Dylan could someday be shagging balls during the All-Star Home Run Derby. With the support from his dad and everyone in Forest Park pulling for him, Dylan has had a Little League season to remember.

There was calm weather for a night game between the minor team Forest Park Reds facing another Forest Park team the Giants Saturday, May 19. The Reds started strong in the first with Jacob Morales stroking a single and Nic Novak getting hit by pitch. They both scored on a clutch two-out double by Micah O’Neal.

The Giants couldn’t get anything going against Reds’ starter Novak, who struck out seven during the first three innings. They didn’t score until the fourth inning, when

Isaiah Silva, Lucas Christian-Dirks and Is-mael McFall started the inning with three straight hits. All three scored on Maurice Jones’ double but he was tagged out at the plate trying to stretch it to a homer.

Meanwhile, the Reds added six runs in the third, two in the fourth and piled on five more in the fifth. In the inning, Mo-rales crushed another single, while O’Neal stroked his second double. Reds hitters like Sam Marino and Lucy Kryger also showed confidence at the plate.

Both Forest Park teams played well but with the Reds having the hotter bats they beat the Giants 15 to 5.

On the evening of June 2 the Forest Park Major White Sox hosted the Westchester As-tros. The visitors jumped out to a one run lead in the first but Collin Donaldson scored on a double by Quinlan Doolin in the sec-

ond. Doolin later came home on a ground out by Reggie Loury to take the lead.

Westchester exploded for six runs in the third and home team fought back with three in the fourth. Charlie Hoehne, Mark Ward and starting pitcher Jack Doss all scored to make it 8-4.

Relief pitchers Damian Marquez and Hoehne allowed only one run over the next three innings. They were helped by solid infield defense. Loury made a diving stop at shortstop and got up in time to throw out the runner on a close play at first.

Meanwhile, Forest Park rallied in the sixth, with James Hobson, Hoehne, Ward and Doss coming home to tie the game 9-9. The Forest Parkers were wearing their rally caps as the teams battled into extra innings. Finally, in the eighth, James Thompson knocked in Hobson with the game winner.

Two Rookie teams, the Yan-kees and Rangers played at the Park on Saturday June 9th. It was an exciting close game, with the Yankees leading 15-12 after three innings. The big hitters for the Yankees were Henry Wagner, who scored four runs and Nathan Canada, Kelvin Grzelak and Kyle Bar-ron each scoring three times. The Rangers tightened up their defense, with Harrison Covarrubias making a nice play in center field and Connor Hoehne pitching well. Finally, the Rangers came back and won 23-17. They were led by Curtis Horras, Sam Bland and Ta’Jonn Johnson, who each scored four runs.


There was a loud crowd at the rookie game between the Forest Park Rangers and Phillies on Saturday, June 16.

The Rangers started off with six runs in the first. They also scored in the sec-ond on a home run by Ta’ John Johnson. TJ had a big game with two home runs and a double and also made two huge catches at short. The Phillies found five runs in the fourth, with a nice hit from Gavin Liesse sending three runners home. The next inning, his teammate Richy Cassiani made a tough stop on a ball up the middle and

made a nice throw to Gavin at first. The Phil-lies continued to shorten the lead in the fifth with some strong hitting by Gavin.

But the rally was stopped by a great play by Morgan Reckamp. She scooped a grounder at

second and threw the runner out at first. The Phillies also showed tremendous defense in the fifth on a double play started by Mikey Racanelli. Mikey stepped on third and made a perfect throw to first. After holding the Rangers to one run in the sixth, the Phillies had their rally caps on looking for hits. Nicky Tri-coci’s towering two-run triple

helped bring in their last three runs but it wasn’t enough. The final score was Rangers 26 Phillies 22.
