Every Breath a Gift from God

As a child, did you ever try to see how long you could hold your breath? I remember holding my breath a number of times and watching the second hand on the clock, seeing if I could break my last record. I remember performing this exercise again and again.

No matter how long I held my breath, a time would come when my lips would open, stale air would rush out, and I would gulp in a refreshing new breath. After all these years, I vividly remember doing this.

I look back now and understand that my experience of breath as a gift is very close to that of the ancient Hebrews: God “breathed into [Adam’s] nostrils the breath of life” (Genesis 2:7).

The truth is that when we know that each breath is borrowed air, we have an attitude of gratitude. Every breath we take is a gift, and every breath is an offering returned to God.

When we lose our sense of the marvel and wonder of breath, then our souls turn from gratitude to presumption and forgetfulness. We assume that we deserve to exist, forgetting that we had absolutely nothing to do with our creation. We presume existence is a right rather than a grace. Our ingratitude then turns to an inflated self-importance, and self-importance gives way to moral arrogance: “God, I thank you that I am not like other people” (Luke 18:11).

But the truth is that we are just like other people. We are breathing human beings utterly and entirely dependent upon the God who creates and sustains us. “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:2).

This past week our family buried my mother-in-law. As I think about the 47 years I have known her, I am confident that she knew every breath she took was a gift from God. As I reflect about her, the one I and others affectionately called ‘Polly,’ words from the Gospel of Luke come to mind:

“For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted” (Luke 18:14).

Polly was a humble woman. She never thought more of herself than

she did of others. She lived her life for others, caring in so many little ways. And Polly knew that each breath was borrowed air, not hers to keep and own, but one to praise the Source of all our days.

May I encourage you to join us for worship regularly here at Belin Memorial United Methodist. Worshiping together is a great way for all of us to keep in mind that every breath we take is a gift from God. I just think that worshiping together enables us to be clear about every breath we take.

YOUTH NEWS

Youth News and Events (continued)

Our next G.R.I.T.S. (Girls Bible Study) will meet on Tuesday, March 17, at 7 PM at Chick-fil-A.

Youth and adult volunteers are needed to help with the Children's Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday morning, March 28. If you are available to help, please contact Blair Delappe, 843.357.5175. Please wear a Belin Youth T-Shirt.

Sunday, March 29, we will watch the movie "The Passion of the Christ" from 5:45 PM-8:45 PM. Please note this movie is rated R because it is very graphic and depicts the true suffering that Jesus went through to save us from our sins. If you allow your child to come, it will be considered permission for them to watch this incredible movie. To watch the trailer, please go to http://youtu.be/4Aif1qEB_JU. Please remember to bring $1 for the meal!

Current 5th-8th graders are invited to join us on the Middle School Mission Trip to Charlotte, North Carolina, July 9-12! To sign up, a $50 non-refundable deposit is due by April 12.

If you would like to raise money for any upcoming youth trip, the 2015 edition of the "Attractions Dining and Value Guide" is still available. It is full of some incredible coupons that make it an easy sell.

Pawleys Island Prayer Breakfast (Waccamaw Schools) meets every first and third Tuesday of the month at 6:45 AM at McDonalds. On Tuesday, March 3, we will watch the sunrise together. Please meet at 344 Myrtle Avenue in Pawleys Island at 6:35 AM! After sunrise, we will drive to McDonalds for our breakfast. In the event of rain, we will follow our regular breakfast schedule.

Murrells Inlet Prayer Breakfast (St. James Schools) meets every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 7 AM at Chick-fil-A. On Tuesday, March 10, we will watch the sunrise together. Please meet at Chick-fil-A at 6:45 AM. We will eat quickly and proceed to Belin’s seawall for sunrise. In the event of rain, we will follow our regular breakfast schedule.

The Blessing of the Inlet is Saturday, May 2! If your child is interested in helping sell BOI t-shirts (6th-12th graders) or with the Fish Fry (10th grade and up), please contact Austin Bond. If you would like to help pre-sell tickets for the Belin Youth Shrimp & Fish Fry fundraiser held at the Blessing of the Inlet, please contact Whitney Ann Lewis, 843.446.2214. Tickets are $12 each, and food is provided by Drunken Jack's chefs. For each ticket you sell, you earn a credit towards a future retreat or mission trip!

If you have not received your FREE 2014-15 Belin Youth T-Shirt yet, please contact Austin Bond with your size.

Salkehatchie Missions - 57 youth and adults will be attending Rivertown (Conway) and Summerville Salkehatchies this June! During each week we will physically improve homes of some very needy families, reach out to these families, connect with other youth in friendship, have a great time, and most importantly honor and grow closer to Jesus. We need your help to make this possible. Donations of Gatorade and water (12-20 oz. single serving size) are requested to help keep us hydrated while working on our sites. Please place donations in the FLC Lobby any time between now and June 11. As we receive donations, we will stack them in the High School Classroom and watch a wall of Gatorade and water grow. When we meet for Sunday school and Youth Group, this will be a visual reminder of how much our church supports our youth and missions. Financial contributions are also requested as registration fees do not cover all of the costs needed for scholarships or to renovate the homes. Our goal is to raise at least $8,000. If you feel led to give, please make a check payable to Belin UMC and designate for Salkehatchie (or Youth Missions). For more info, please visit www.salkehatchie.org or contact Austin.

Profiles of Service - by Carrie Humphreys (second in a series of interviews with the staff at Belin Memorial)

Three extraordinary women tend to the business office of Belin Memorial. The trio is under the guidance of church administrator, Robin Boyer.

For the past eight years Cheri Humble has assisted the church administrator in managing the church finances, everything from pensions to payroll to accounts payable and receivable. She also administers the human resources and insurance benefits for the 50+ employees of the church. With the help of volunteer counters, she processes our Sunday tithes and offerings each week. With a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business management, she says she is challenged and gratified when she works with numbers and enjoys

reconciling accounting problems. Humble, 58, loves her job.

Raised in Ohio, Humble has two grown sons and six "adorable" grandchildren. Formerly married to a military husband, she has traveled extensively and still enjoys ocean cruising. Her hobbies include crafting and reading romance and mystery novels. Her favorite pals, she says, are her toy poodle Miss Prissy and her two Maltese pups named Maggie May and Romeo.

"I enjoy everyone I work with," Humble confides. "And I’ve met so many nice congregation members who are dedicated to this church.”

* * * * *

Kim Nobles, administrative assistant and newest member of the team, has her hands full coordinating all the details and paperwork for church weddings, baptisms, memorials and honorariums, funerals, scholarships, and new member activities. She's also the person who composes and prints the church bulletins each Sunday for both the Harbor and the traditional services. As the first person you see when entering the office, she is quick to offer a friendly greeting and warm smile to all who visit.

Nobles said her foremost priority, however, is answering the needs of Pastors Mike and Scott. "Whatever they request . . . letter writing, organizing, or special projects, I work with them to ensure that everything gets done."

Raised in Sumter, Nobles, 30, says her life really revolves around her job, her family, and her church. She adores her husband, Zach, and their 20-month old twin daughters, Ellen and Emmie who keep her plate full. "I don't have a lot of time for hobbies. The twins are definitely a handful but such a blessing in our lives.”

* * * * *

Meet Wendy Zulanch, administrative assistant. Her job is immense. She's the person who manages, composes, and updates our church interactive website, the weekly e-news letter, the monthly printed newsletter, and the church monthly calendar. She's also the go-to technology person on staff who is called when there is a problem with one of the thirty-some computers on campus or issues with the phones, internet, or office equipment. Adding to her workday, Zulanch also orders all of the office supplies and is keeper of the Belin cemetery,

managing all of the plots and niches. "My job responsibilities aren't really limited," Zulanch says. “I love the variety my job presents and the opportunity to assist all of our senior staff members in some way."

On Saturday, she assists Lee, her husband of 32 years, in the family’s bakery in Surfside where she makes up to a thousand pounds of bagels in addition to assisting with errands and marketing for the business. The couple hails from the Milwaukee area and has two grown sons.

Altar Guild Needs Volunteers Altar Guild needs two volunteers to serve together during the month of November. For a list of duties and more information, please contact Mickie Hilton, 843.357.3172.

The Inlet View is printed monthly with weekly

updates available by email or online. Please submit, in writing, information to be included in the current week’s issue of the newsletter by noon on Monday to Wendy Zulanch in the church office. You may email submissions to [email protected].
