BGOP MEETINGS Guild meetings are held on the first and third Fridays of each month at 7:30 P.M. at the Gulf Branch Nature Center, 3608 North Military Road, Arlington VA 22207. Meetings are usually held in the Guild’s shop which is located about 50 yards past the Nature Center building on the wooded path. Occasional Friday meetings with a speaker or video are held in the Nature Center auditorium. Call the HOTLINE for updates on meetings and event.

Shop Rules And Etiquette

The Guild shop is available for use by members whenever the Nature Center park is open. Shop is locked, so call Shopmaster or a Board member for access. Follow all safety rules. Record number of visitors on log sheet near door. Please observe the following rules and etiquette: ♦ Bring safety glasses and wear them. Work in a safe

manner at all times. ♦ Clean the shop before you start to work. ♦ Empty firepots and dump ash gate after each use to

minimize corrosion. ♦ Dump ashes in the ash dump outside, at the side of

the shop. ♦ Place tools back in their proper places. ♦ Dress bar ends which you have cut, to be ready for

the next user. ♦ Clean the shop before you leave, and carry out trash

which you create. ♦ Always turn out the lights and lock up when leaving. ♦ Bring your own material for personal projects. Shop

stock is for learning and practice. ♦ No alcoholic beverages on park property.

On a recent trip to Maine I was introduced toJohn W. Brace, proprietor and builder of theWashington County Railroad II in Cherryfield.Descendant of a blacksmithing family, John is amechanical engineer turned machinist. He hasconstructed and operates several 1/8 scale loco-motives and a steam traction engine, also 1/8scale. His two sons served blacksmithing ap-prenticeships under John's cousin, GeorgeRicker, starting in '67. They finished their ap-prenticeship in England during the winter of '74.Son George is carrying on the family traditionand is the current owner of the 1801 RickerBlacksmith Shop in Cherryfield.

The shop began about 1801 when John's great-great-great grandfather, General AlexanderCampbell needed a blacksmith. He hiredAmaziah Ricker, John's great-great grandfather,to set up and operate the shop. Over the years

the shop did general blacksmithing and wheel-wright work for lumbering and fishing interestsin the area. The old wheel stone still lies outsidethe shop. Inside, horseshoes hang in one corner,runners for a log sled in another, and an ironwheel hub sits under a workbench. Three footvises, one with its upsetting block in place, andan old power hammer from Grinnell, Iowa, ac-company the usual setup of coal forge, anvils,post vises and hand tools. There is also an earlyheavy duty arc welder, which has multiple cableconnectors instead of a range switch.

In more recent years George has done archi-tectural work, including large spiral staircases.The shop is now open by appointment, as Georgeis also employed in the local blueberry industry,the primary employer in Cherryfield. Georgecontinues to do commissions as time permits.

RUST REMOVAL

A month or so ago I got curious about therust thing and looked up the whole ironcorrosion thing in Mark's Handbook, astandard mechanical engineering referencebook. There was quite a bit of info there.As it turns out, the makers of cast ironstoves use the electrolytic process to turntheir stoves black, at least they used to.Nowadays they use paint. But for whateverreason, the cast-iron holds onto that blackresidue (which is a another iron oxideform) Perhaps it is because it is more po-rous so its just harder to get off the"surface" since the surface is porous.

Whatever is in the red scum has to be somecombination of iron, water and washingsoda constituents. I don't know anything inthe water or soda that would look red. Sounless you have discovered a new age ofalchemy, I would guess the red scum has alot of iron in it. By the way, if you scrapethe black slime off the positive electrodeand spread it out on a piece of newspaper,it all turns to red rust powder as it dries.

Remain-ing classes this year included 2 Hofi basicclasses, Sept. 24-28 and Oct. 1-5 and a threeday tool making class starting Sunday Oct. 7.There is also a weekend 25 lb Little Giantpower hammer class with Phil Cox Nov. 10 &11, 2 six-day farrier classes with Richard EllisDec. 3-8 and 10-15, and a forge welding classwith Bob Patrick Dec. 17-21. The Ellisclasses are designed to prepare farriers for the2002 National Championship Competition inLexington, KY. While there are no openingsin the Sept. 24-28 class, there are spacesavailable in all other classes. I would like togive you the opportunity to make any sugges-tions you may have concerning new classideas or programs you might be interested inseeing here at the school when it reopens, soplease give us your input. With the success ofmy hand tools and air hammer sales, I amlooking forward to spending more time at theforge and traveling.
