Welcome

The Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland ("BGCM") and the Carroll County Farm Museum welcome you to the 19th annual Blacksmith Days. This year one of BGCM’s founders, Nick Vincent, is joined by two world renown artist-blacksmiths, Dorothy Stiegler from California & Becky Little from Nova Scotia, as demonstrators in the three main demonstration tents. Make sure you wear your eye protection because these blacksmiths really know how to make the sparks fly!

AND... there are also demonstrations of Bladesmithing, Brass Casting, Leatherwork, and Repoussé in the School for Traditional Arts building.

EVEN MORE... there are Farriers, Blacksmithing Vendors, Tailgating, 2 Iron In The Hats, 3 Forging Contests, 2 Horseshoe Forging Contests, 3 Raffles, Silent & Called Auctions, Food, Fellowship and (on display in the Traditional Arts School) a hand forged partridge in a hand forged pear tree.

BUT, AT THE SAME TIME... please don’t forget to visit the "Sheep to Shawl" demonstration and all of the regular farm museum exhibits and activities.

AFTERWARDS... rest up so you can come back next year when the BGCM celebrates the 20th Annual Blacksmith Days.

Dorothy Stiegler Forging Bronze Flowers – Multiple Strikers

Over the past 32 years Dorothy has been forging steel or bronze. Lately it has been bronze, type 655. In the last three years she has run nearly 50,000 lbs of type 655 Bronze through Stiegler Metal Design, a 2 man shop with one very accomplished apprentice. All they have left is one 5 gallon bucket of scrap after turning that tonnage into railings, doors, gates, lighting, sink bases and hammered bar tops. They specialize in rivets, mortise and tenon. It looks old, it feels old. She lives in Sutter Creek CA. and does high end forgings for those with discretionary income. Most of her work is in Pebble beach and Palo Alto, CA. She works with her partner in all things Erik Lander and her apprentice Jake Hill.

Becky Little Forging Mobiles – Power Hammer Tooling

With well known blacksmith John Little for a father, Becky was exposed to blacksmithing at an early age. She studied philosophy at King’s College but rediscovered an interest in metalwork while searching for a career that could be both physically and emotionally satisfying. An apprenticeship with her father in 2002 developed into part-time self-employment, working beside John in his shop. In 2005 they demonstrated together at CanIron V, which brought such international legends as Paul and Heiner Zimmermann, Fred Christ and Christoph Friedrich amongst others. Becky was invited by the Zimmermanns to Germany to learn and help in their shop. Becky jumped at the chance and spent the next year in Europe, learning a great deal about work, design, business and life from this warm family. From there, she continued her learning at the shop of Oskar and Andy Hafen and was able to visit many other shops and attend conferences in Norway and Germany. Now back in Nova Scotia she is ready to launch her full-time blacksmithing career with gusto. Greatly influenced by her father’s work and by contemporary European smiths, Becky is exploring modern forging aesthetics and design to find her own way.

Bladesmithing – Larry Nowicki – Rob Dekelbaum (3)

Larry Nowicki After years of study to refine forging skills I have achieved a delightful blend of natural beauty with balanced natral tapers. Normalizing and proper heat treating techniques produce a durable, quality, working tool with pleasant profiles and a quality feel. NATURAL BEAUTY IN A BALANCED BLADE. I use quality steels such as D2, W1, W2, 1070, 1085, and 5160 along with some Damascus and other quality steels. I can enhance the blades with custom filework and add precious metal inlay, or mosaic pins to embellish the handles. Some blades get combat cord wraps over ray skins. Enjoy one of my blades or let me help you design one. I reserve the

right to refuse any design which does not fit into my philosophy of what a knife should be. Thank you for your interest in the knives I produce. I hope they will give you years of enjoyment for you and those you pass it on to. A GREAT TOOL FOR A LIFETIME Rob Dekelbaum started his bladesmithing with BGCM in November of 2005 and the rest, as they say, is history. Since then he has gone what some would call a little overboard in acquiring and building the necessary tools and supplies to practice his newfound favorite pastime. With the help and guidance of several people (most notably famed Damascus artisan Delbert Ealy and ABS Master Bladesmith Bruce Bump) he is also now making his own pattern welded steel in his home shop. Rob still considers himself an "enthusiastic amateur" in the world of knifemaking, but plans to begin working towards his goal of attaining an ABS Journeyman Smith stamp in the next few years.

Notes Brass Casting - Walter VanAlstine (G –Bay 1) Walter VanAlstine was born in upper New York state in 1940 but his family moved to Germany after World War II to help with the reconstruction. Walter has fond memories of living in the small village of Wetzler, waking up to the sounds of the blacksmith shop across the street. Returning to Maryland in 1953 , he moved to Savage in 1972. In his efforts to melt and cast aluminum, Walter acquired the equipment to forge iron. Recalling his childhood, he decided to try heating metal and pushing it into the shape he wanted. Walter couldn’t find a local blacksmithing course or a blacksmith to whom he could apprentice, so he relied on old books written around 1900 to discover the mystery of blacksmithing. Finally 15 years ago he learned of the Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland at the Carroll County Farm Museum. Walter went to a meeting and he hasn’t missed a guild meeting since. As the guild’s forgemaster, Walter quickly involves new members in blacksmithing. Walter and his son, Bucky, teach the BGCM Basic Knife Making Class. Walter and his son also operate the Dutch Forge and their touchmark is a wooden shoe. Walter is also the guild’s forgemaster.

Carving – Teddy Gregor (E - Bay 6)

Ferenc “Teddy” Gregor, a first generation Hungarian-American, residing in Maryland, began carving in 1987, utilizing natural materials, such as wood, horn, fossil ivories, and stone. He is self taught using both old and new technique in various mediums and styles. In 1996, he was commissioned to complete the carving for the National Cryptological Memorial, “THEY SERVED IN SILENCE”. Well known for his carved handle custom knives, his small scale carving is considered a world class carver by collectors. In 1998 he was awarded “Best Presentation for Custom Knives” at the Chesapeake National Knife show, by his peers.

Leatherwork - Marvin Shipley (G – Bay 4) Marvin was raised on the family farm in south Carroll County. He was told that if you use your mind and hands to make something, you will never be hungry. Both his father and maternal grandfather were very talented with their hands. His Grandfather Young, a deaf mute learned the shoemaking and repair trade. Marvin remembers visiting with a pair of worn out shoes and leaving with a good pair of shoes. His father, Lester Shipley, was a trim carpenter for one of the union companies building around Baltimore and taught him a lot about building and wood crafting. Then in school Mr. Charles Borchers his shop teacher from 1947 thru 1953, taught him projects in metal, wood, leather. Facing the draft, he married

his high school sweetheart and enlisted in the U. S. Marines. While overseas he started making knives. He uses the stock removal process, making the complete blade from ATS34, 154CM, 440C, or D2 steel; sent to a certified metallurgist, Paul Bos in Idaho, who heat treats them; completed using stainless steel or nickel silver hilts, phenolic or sandbar stag handles, and a sheath of 9/10 oz Weaver leather finished with dye or neats foot oil. With his wife’s indulgence, Marvin developed a knife and sheath that he is very proud of. Most given to family and friends as gifts. Years ago at a show, Bill Moran reviewed some of Marvin’s knives. Bill said the only problem was they were not forged. Marvin joined BGCM via his friend Jim Pieffer, making his first forged blade with the help of Dave Morgan. Marvin plans to complete the BGCM blade smithing course.

Notes Iron Kiss Hammers - John Larson (Demo Tents)

John has been manufacturing air hammers since 1996. He intends to have a tenth anniversary shop party in August. John also demonstrates blacksmithing at Jerusalem Mills a satellite forge of BGCM. In addition to manufacturing hammers, he does welding and fabrication. This is a second career for John, after retiring from being a Professor of Economics at Loyola College in Baltimore. John has been blacksmithing for about 12 years and has been a welder, fabricator, and machinist of hot rods since high school. John has vivid memories of visiting village blacksmith shops with my Dad in the 1950s in rural Minnesota. John says his biggest passion is to make the best air hammer on the planet.

Repossé- Kerry Stagmer (E - Bay 5) Kerry Stagmer has been working in metal for more than twenty years. An unusual career: making knives, swords, and armor. Kerry developed a sword that he was happy with. A simple, resilient, attractive blade that is the basis of all swords he produces. Baltimore Knife and Sword has evolved to include not only swords for re-enactors but swords for collectors, display racks, armor, functional (and not so functional) sculpture, and sterling, gold, and platinum jewelry inspired by that found in Renaissance portraiture. Kerry's work is carefully researched to reflect the style of arms and armor produced from Viking times through the

17th Century. His work has appeared in many venues: a flaming sword in the sequel to Adam West's Maxim Xul, a suit of armor for Stacey Keech in Richard the Third at the Shakespeare Theatre at the Folger, a sword in New York City's Sony Theatre, and in performances at Renaissance festivals and theatres all over the United States. His hand-chased jewelry pieces take an average of thirty hours to complete and chased, raised and repoussed work is even more intensive. Increasing awareness among both artists and the general public of these dying art forms has become the focus of much of his time in the last few years.

Notes“SHEEP TO SHAWL” DEMONSTRATION

The Carroll County Farm Museum is pleased to announce a new demonstration during Blacksmith Days. On Saturday, May 19 from Noon-5 p.m., the Carroll County Fiber Artists will host “Sheep to Shawl,” demonstrating the step by step process of taking wool from a sheep to a completed article of clothing. These activities will take place in tents located between the Museum’s Living History Center and Blacksmith’s Shop. A baby black “Finn” named Huckleberry will be sheared with old-fashioned hand clippers. The fleece will be carded and spun on a spinning wheel and drop spindle. Weavers will then demonstrate weaving the freshly spun yarn into a shawl on a 4-harness loom. The completed shawl will be auctioned at 4:30 p.m. at the Blacksmith Days Live Auction, with proceeds benefiting the Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland. Junior members of the Carroll County Fiber Artists will be demonstrating “fleece to shawl”, showing techniques of carding, spinning, and weaving. Visitors are invited to try their hand at one or more of these techniques.
