A beautiful sunny day was in store on Sunday, June 5th for 46 club members who met at Stow Grove Park for our annual installation picnic. This event was well attended, and we all had a great time! PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Peter Mackins

I understand Monday, June 20th was Summer Solstice which would mean it is officially summer. Traditionally, however, the 4th of July is really the summer kick off with parades, barbeques, friends and fireworks. Corvette Club Santa Barbara will have available all but the latter. I think the county fire officials have been wise over the years from disallowing the personal fireworks but I digress. The parade and our participation will again give us the opportunity to represent the best of American design and technology. In addition, peo-ple love seeing that many Corvettes in one place at one time. This is especially true of the younger set. Yes, they might have a poster of a Lamborghini on the wall but there is something special about a Corvette. You may have liked the looks of Ginger on Gilligan’s Island but Mary Anne was who we wanted to take home. I

hope to see great attendance at this year’s parade. For the barbeques and friends portion of the 4th of July, that takes place following the parade at the LoMonaco’s. Frank and Barbara

LoMonaco will again be opening their house and back yard to us for a wonderful gathering. Frank and his sons have become masters of burgers and dogs. Rumor has it Tony Megowan will be bringing his

fantastic brownies or something just as sweet and it will give me an excuse to test my baking again. If you would like to bring a munchie plate I’m sure it will be quite welcome. If you have not been to the LoMonaco’s previously or you have forgotten, enter from the 300 block of E. Padre and park in their back yard [See the CCSB Roster for their home address]. Personally I love seeing all our cars parked together on the green. I hope to see you all that the 4th of July Parade and the following barbecue at Frank and Barbara LoMonaco’s. Since our July Meeting is scheduled the day following the parade and barbecue, the Board and I have cancelled our July CCSB General Meeting. I have however asked Tony to bring the sign-up sheets for our upcoming events. Have a great summer.

I want to thank all of those who along with me were able to visit the HAAS Automation facility in Oxnard on June 10th. The north area members gathered

at the Carpinteria City Hall and since it was a workday the parking lot was not available to us. As a result, the cars were lined up on the street from one end of City Hall to the other. The drive along the Rincon was short but it is such a great sight to look in my rear view mirror and see a dozen or so Corvettes all in a row.

We arrived at TGI Friday’s in Oxnard a little before noon and were joined by our southern members. The only slight hiccup was just one waitress assigned to our entire group even though I alerted the restaurant that we would have 25 to 30 people. Instead of one large table, I requested that the restaurant leave the tables for two or four. This I thought would give us a better chance to talk with those with whom we may not have had much conversation in the past. I had the privilege of sitting with Jacques Bellesiles and learning about his racing history. Jacque was flying solo since Yuriko drew the short straw and had to stay home with their pup. For those who do not know, Jacque had an extensive racing career driving everything from an MGTC to a Ferrari.

It is very interesting the stories that our members have to share. [continued on page 3]

After lunch it was a short drive to the HAAS facility. Our warm greeting included having them set out a poster at the front

desk with the image of the split window of a 63 Vette with the words “They don’t write songs about Volvo’s.” Our guide for the day was Kenneth Foulks who provided each of us with a headset for ease of communication within the plant. Our first stop was the demo room where they had examples of a number of the milling machines they manufacture along with one, number 41 race car of Kurt Bush that had come directly from a win at Martinsville, Virgina. Kenneth explained the machine had the capability

of taking a solid cylinder of steel and in two minutes producing a beautiful part with all of its holes, taps, threads, surfaces, flanges etc. all in one operation. He said it would take 4 minutes to produce the part with

tolerances less than a human hair. Outside of the demo room was a trophy case which includ-ed among other things two NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion-ship trophies.

Upstairs and to the catwalk for an overhead view of the manu-facturing facility. The building we viewed was one of four with 250,000 square feet each under roof. At one point we were on a deck overlooking the acreage of outside storage. That gave us the opportunity to learn that HAAS rents their race engines from Hendricks Motor Sports for a cool $50,000 per race. We also learned that the machining they do for racing is solely for their cars alone. It was a very informative hour or so and a very en-joyable outing. Thank you all. The CCSB General Meeting on July 5th has been cancelled because it is so close to the 4th of July Parade and BBQ. However, we will have sign-up sheets available for the July and August events at the Parade and Post-Parade BBQ. The Runch Run for the 16th of July has been moved to the 10th of July. We will join Plan B Winery for their 2nd Sunday Supper. The festivities start at 4:30 PM and go until 7:00 PM. The theme is Rhythm ‘n Blues By the Sea with Shari Puorto. They will have wine by the glass or by the bottle, the Shrimp vs Chef Food Truck, and Desserts to Die For. It gets full and chilly so bring a lawn chair and a jacket. Please don't bring outside food or drink. We will all meet at Plan B Winery and I will send out directions this

coming week. We plan on being there early to stake out our territory. Also in July is the PCPA Theaterfest in Solvang on the 23rd. We will be seeing Shrek. Please let Peter know by the 4th of July if you would like to attend. We will leave Timbers at 5:30 PM to arrive at the PCPA Theater by 6:15 PM. We are planning on having a picnic dinner on the grass before the play. Everyone please bring your own main course and then something to share with everyone. Also bring chairs and blankets for the picnic dinner. It can get cold during the evening so be sure to bring a jacket and/ or blanket to keep warm during the performance.

For August, we will start off with MB2 Raceway on August 7th. Since 2007, MB2 Raceway has provided the state-of-the-art indoor go-karting facilities. They offer a high-speed race simulation with a challenging and unique indoor road course that is fun for all skill levels and ages. Once I know how many people are going to at-tend I will have a time and cost. Afterwards we will proceed to

the Thousand Oaks Mall where we will dine at Stacked. Stacked offers Burgers, Pizza, Salads and Mac ‘n’ Cheese. Choose between dozens of ingredients to create the perfect meal for your taste. Or you can select one of their recommended signature items.

On August 13th, we will visit Olivas Adobe for Music Under the Stars. If you are interested in this event please let me know either on the website, email, or at the 4th of July BBQ. I need a head count ASAP so I can get tickets. We will be seeing Britain’s Finest, A Beatles Tribute Band. The Southland’s most authentic Beatles tribute band recreates the iconic group’s incredible vocals, singular orchestrations and Fab Four magic. Cost will be 22.50 per person. We will plan a Picnic Dinner for this event. We are still planning the Runch Run for August 21st so if you have any suggestions please let me know. I will hopefully have something for the August meeting. We will start planning next year’s activities soon so if you have any suggestions drop me an email. I will send out an email next month for everyone to put their suggestions down.

Enjoy and I hope to see you on one of our many runs.

Member Highlight: Steve & Linda Petersen SOUTH KOREA TRIP We went to S. Korea for a dual purpose. Initially for an International Rotary Conven-tion. There were 43000 people at this convention. More importantly we took Bryan and his wife with us so Bryan could possibly find his Korean parents. That part was unsuccessful. He did find out his dad had passed away several years ago. The adop-tion agency there had sent a letter to his mother but she failed to respond. We did visit the orphanage that he stayed in for several months of his life almost 30 years ago. Melissa and Linda got to hold some orphan babies at one facility but had to give them back. That was hard.

Member Highlight: Pat Bloom & Sandy Halverson—THE 100TH RUNNING OF THE INDIANAPOLIS 500 Our journey began 5/25 on the AirBus to LA and Embassy Suites in time for cocktails and dinner. The following morning, we arrived at LAX for our nonstop flight to Chicago. The only glitch was United sending texts changing the flight time back and forth three times. Very confusing. Security went smoothly. We picked up our car rental in Chicago and we both noticed the unfriendly employees.

Our first stop was Gary, Indiana at Michael Jackson's childhood home. Much of the area is boarded up and it seems the town has fallen on very hard times. The Jackson home is well kept with a pretty front yard and fence surrounding the small home. There is a plaque out front and it is easily distinguishable from the rest of the homes in the area. One look at the neighborhood and Pat want-ed to just stay

in the car with the engine running. Sandy, by far the more adventurous, got out and walked around taking pictures of the home. Pat sitting in the car, with the engine running, kept thinking “Come on Sandy, before we get killed.” There were plans to stop at one of two places to eat dinner in West Lafa-yette but gave up after not being able to find the first place and the sec-ond looked more like a Purdue University bar. We ended up having dinner at a Steak and Shake and again noticed very unfriendly people. Indiana did not show us Southern Charm. There was a lot of road construction along the main highway which slowed down our travels. [continued on page 7]

A road hazard and subsequent tire problem necessitated a call to AAA from the Steak and Shake. Luckily they are a 24 hr. restaurant so we felt very safe wait-

ing for help. We finally made it to our hotel in Indianapolis at 2 AM. It was a very long day. Before we could start our Friday day of fun we took care of the tire issue and then checked into our hotel where we would spend three nights. Our Road Trips Host was also there to give us our tickets and help with any questions. Next stop was the Speedway where we watched some final practice, the Vintage Car Laps and walked through Gasoline Alley which was a car show where people showed off their beautiful classic cars. It seemed like a good day to go through the Hall of Fame Museum which is onsite and very interesting. Pens-ke has a good collection on display and Tony Stewart had his own section. Joey Logano's car was displayed and many many more. There was an afternoon concert with Journey at the Speedway. It was a standing room only event and very hot and very humid. Sandy watched the performance up close and personal and Pat found a place to sit down on the grass while she was still alive and breathing. We were both very surprised at the amount of drinking and that peo-ple are allowed to bring in large coolers filled with beer. Dinner at TGI

Fridays near our hotel. Loud and filled with kids but food was good. The Festival Parade started at noon on Saturday in the downtown area. As luck would have it we parked the car about one block from our front row reserved seats close to the beginning of the parade. We were amazed at our location. Before the parade started a man walked by with a Hinchcliffe hat. Sandy gave him a thumbs up because that was her driver pick for the race. He stopped and started talking to us and said he was “Hinch's” father. We both said, “Right, show us some ID” which he promptly did. He was very friendly and pointed to his wife. I asked how he felt when his son got the pole for the 500 and he said he almost passed out. The Parade itself was very patriotic and fun to watch - beautiful Corvettes and Camaros, bands, floats, and of course the drivers. It was interesting that the bataans of the marchers were shaped like ri-fles, I'm assuming in honor of Memorial Day. After the parade we headed

back to the Speedway and VIP parking which was really nice after walk-ing so far on Friday. The Legends Concert was in the afternoon: Cory Cox at 3:30, Chris Janson at 4:00 and Blake Shelton at 5:00 (1 ½ hrs) This was again standing room event but Pat found something to lean on for the almost 4 hrs. Sandy happily mingled closer to the stage taking pictures. All three singers were great. Also a great people watching ex-perience. Dinner at the Slippery Noodle, a well known restaurant with live jazz. After dinner we walked around a beautiful downtown square with fountains, lights and lit horse drawn carriages. Sunday was the 100th running of the Indy 500 Race at 12:20.

We had a chartered bus ride to the track with police escort. The traffic was incredible (in a bad way) and we were so happy to be on the bus. [Video link on YouTube to see the 2013 Indy 500 police escort] The festivities started at 9:45 with laps by the Festival Princess, older Indy cars, former Indy 500 champions, military in a long line of Silverados, followed by Driver Intros. The call for drivers to start their engines was at 12 with the race starting just after that. We had very good seats in the Paddock Section. It was hot and humid and crowded (a sellout crowd of 350,000+) but somehow still fun.

The beginning of the race was exciting with Sandy's driver (Hinchcliffe) and Pat's driver (Hunter-Raey) battling back and forth for first and second place for several laps. A rookie from Nevada City won, which is next to Grass Valley where Pat's son lives. Our bus took an hour just to get out of the parking lot after

the race. It was complete mayhem and we were so happy to let someone else do the driving. It was astonishing to us that people were buying beer on their way out to their cars. The Indianapolis motorcycle police have beautiful midnight blue Harleys with their names on the tank. We stopped and talked to a Captain who was very nice. They have quite a job dealing with so many people and alcohol and his comment was “We are use to it.”

Dinner – P F Changs near our hotel. Our drive back to Chicago started early Monday morning.. We stopped in Merrillville at Albanese, home of Gummi Bears. This is a candy lovers paradise. A little girl came in with her family looking bored and then shrieked, “CANDY” It was very cute. The next stop was our Chicago hotel, Palmer House. This is not an easy city to negotiate and it took a couple of wrong turns to make it

to the front of our hotel which is in the midst of the tall buildings. The self parking garage was a block and a half away and our other choice was valet ($75.) Yes, that's right for one night! [continued on page 9]

Not wanting to drag our suitcases that far, we weari-ly gave our car key to the unfriendly valet. The Dodger/Cubs game at Wrigley Field started at 1:30, and we took the elevated train from just out-side our hotel. This was another first for Pat. Being jammed in with thousands of Cub fans is quite the experience. There were a few Dodger shirts to be seen and, even stranger, by us on the train. It was really exciting even though the Dodgers lost. They put on quite the patriotic show. Sandy did another incredible job in reserving our seats. We were in back of home plate. Yes, we did eat Chicago foot longs. Cubs fans do not rush out at game's end but stand up and

sing several songs. It was really memorable and we agree Los Angeles needs more songs along with their dedicated fans. After riding the train back to the hotel, we decided to do a little sight seeing. Millenium Park is a few blocks from our hotel and really quite beautiful at night. Just beyond that was Giordano's, official pizza of the Cubs, for some Chicago style deep dish pizza. We waited to be seated and then another 45 minutes to prepare our pizza. It is an experi-ence but both of us would have been happy with just one slice. Deep dish is just too much for these California girls. Chicago was just as tricky finding the freeway to the airport on Tuesday morning. Even returning our rental car had its challenges. The TV news kept saying what a nightmare it was to get through airport security but we were happy to see that it went very smoothly. We had a nonstop return flight to Los Angeles and then a 2 ½ hr wait for the Santa Bar-bara AirBus to whisk us back to Goleta.

It was a wonderful trip but there really is no place like home.

On the 30th of April, we boarded a plane bound for Indianapolis. Before we could pick up our new baby we wanted to take a side trip and visit the hallowed grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This year is the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 so we thought we would see the speedway. We started off with a bus tour of the speedway which included a stop at the start finish line to

“Kiss the Bricks.” (actually as I write this I am watching the Indy 500) In 1996, after winning the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Dale Jarrett stated to his crew chief Todd Parrott that he wanted to do something unique after the victory. His crew chief and team joined in and drivers have kissed the bricks after every Brick-yard 400 and Indianapolis 500 win ever since. After the bus tour we browsed the museum. They had several of the old race cars and mem-orabilia. It was nice to see the history of the museum.

We then left Indianapolis for Bowling Green. We got into Bowl-ing Green before the Museum closed so we thought we would stop by and do our shopping and just maybe see our new baby. As luck would have it when we walked in there it was. A nice shiny Long Beach Red Coupe. I think there were some other cars there too, but our focus was on just one. I was sure it would look good, but after seeing it in person all I could think of was WOW. This is one color the black definitely sets off. We met some of the other people there that would also be picking up their new Corvettes the next day. There was a torch red Corvette parked in front of our beauty and another torch red parked behind us. We found out they belonged to 2 brothers. One is turning 60 this year and the other is turning 65 this year and they decided they would both get new Corvettes and take delivery at the museum.

After finishing our shopping, we headed off to the hotel and to get something to eat. After dinner we returned to the hotel to get ready for the next day and to TRY and get some sleep... Not that we were excited or anything! Our first task on Monday was to find the CCSB Club Banner. Not only did we find it, we found it in the Front Circle. We also found the club bricks that were done in 2009 for the caravan. At 7:30 we entered the museum and met Doug, our guide for the day. After filling out some paperwork we pro-ceeded to the car and Doug gave us a rundown on how almost everything in the car works. This is definitely not your dad’s Vette. After we went over everything it was time to tour the plant. Our tour was the public tour on steroids. [continued on page 11]

We got to see things you normally don’t see on the public tour. It’s neat watch-ing a Vette come together. After our tour we headed back to the museum for lunch and a museum tour. Doug was a founding member of the museum so he had a lot of insight and history to tell us. After this it was time to take delivery of our baby. Doug drove the car out of the museum and once outside gave the key fobs to Paula and I. The car was now officially ours. After some pictures we returned to the hotel to prepare for the next chapter in our journey home.

The next morning, we left to spend a couple of days in Chicago before the start of our trek home on Old Route 66. Next month I will tell you about our trip home. If you ever get a chance to do a museum delivery I can only say one thing. DO IT. You will not be disappointed. It was an experience of a life time.

Thank You Barbara LoMonaco for the screen shots from the Web Cams at the Museum!
