8 October 2013

Greetings from the Mel and Linda Vogt

Just to rehash what we have been up to, we had a fabulous time at our Chapter Z Great Escape. That was a three day trip that included spending one day at the Minnesota State Renaissance Fair. All of us thought it was a lot of fun and brought home some wonderful memories. Of course, there were a few things that happened that some of us will spend years living them down. Just don’t ask me to keep track of your motorcycle keys!!!!! Here are a couple pictures of our chapter having fun.

WE

We went to the Nebraska Friendship Campout since talking with you last. It too

was a fun weekend. The weather was very hot but a nice breeze made it tolerable and great for sleeping. Our Saturday ride was enjoyable and, as usual, the food for the entire weekend was endless.

Mel and I spent a week at the park that turned into our Labor Day weekend campout with the chapter. Again, very hot weather the first few days but ended up being a very nice Sunday and Monday. We took a few rides and did a lot of eating. It’s like our chapter director says, GWTA stands for Gaining Weight Touring America. Seems like we eat a lot but we have so many good cooks in the chapter.

We are plan on going to the Nebraska Chapter Y Cook-off yet this month. They are one fun chapter to be around. Also, we never miss the Apple Fest in Woodbine, IA. This is usually a weekend event since some of our chapter members live in Woodbine and open up their house and yard to any other chapters that want to attend. Our chapter spends the day at the festivities, which includes a motorcycle show this year, and then has a bonfire and evening of chitchat. Sometimes, Mel and friends play guitar and sing.

October is be another busy month. We need to get in as much riding as possible since cool, or should I say cold, weather is just around the corner. Our Chapter Awards night

is mid month. Although we have serious awards, most of the time it is the humorous times that come to mind and anyone is game. I have no doubt I am in for it this year but I also can come up with a few memorable moments that happened to a few others. It will be a lot of fun as usual.

Toward the end of the month is the annual Halloween Party which also takes place at the Erlewine’s in Woodbine. It is a costume party and everyone goes out of the way to bring the kids and grandkids. Our young grandkids have such a good time. Mel’s not so thrilled with dressing up but has always

gone along with it. It gets more difficult tocome up with different costume ideas but we will come through with something.

I am sure everyone has fall activities in their chapter and state. Please take the time to participate and encourage others to go as well. Our state Fall Festival is just around the corner. We are looking forward to it already. Get out and do things before it is too cold. Safe riding, Mel and Linda Vogt

12 October 2013

We want to wish everyone a good Labor Day that is coming up. I cannot believe that the summer is almost over. This has been a cool and wet summer for us. Now to tell you a little about our trip to Big Sky Montana. George and I left on Thursday morning 7/11/13 about 8:00 am. Our group left about 2 hours ahead of us. We kept in touch with them by cell phone at different times during the day. You know there was a time when you had to wait until you got to the rally to see if everyone of members made it to Gold Rush in good condition. George and I stopped in St. Joseph,MO. for dinner when George got a call from Jim Quinn. The group did not make it as far north as they had thought about. Their 1st plan had been to stop in St. Joseph and then they decided that they were going to stop at Council Bluffs,IO. When George was talking to them they were less than one mile away at a Cracker Barrel having dinner and we were at Denny's having dinner. It was nice to meet up with the group and we travelled the rest of the trip with the group.

On Friday we headed north to Sioux Falls,SD and then travelled west toward Montana. We spent the night in Grand Rapids, SD and got up on Saturday morning and drove to Mt. Rushmore. Some of our members had not been to Mt. Rushmore before and they wanted to see the monument. We did stop and take pictures of Mt. Rushmore, then we stopped at Chief Crazy Horse Monument and took some pictures. From there we went north to get back on Interstate 90 and continue on to Big Sky.

We were close to Billings when we ran into some rain. This rain lasted for the 150 miles that we travelled to Bozeman.

We got to Bozeman about 9:30 pm and stopped at Subway at 9:45 pm. The employees were so nice and told us to come on in. They got all 9 of us taken care of in a matter of 10 minutes. Then they let us eat in the dining room while they went about

cleaning up so they could close the restaurant as soon as we left. Then we are on our way for the last 40 miles or so.

We did not expect to be travelling this late at night but we did enjoy our sightseeing that morning. We got to Big Sky about midnight and finally found the correct building so we could get the keys to the condo that the group was sharing.

Chuck Holland was staying at the bottom of the mountain so he did not have to travel up the mountain that late of night. Oh yea, when George and I started up the mountain we had to come to a dead stop while

approximately 15 deer and babies were going across the road so they could go down the other side of the mountain. We had a great trip to Big Sky and enjoyed the company of 7 of our members from Nashville, TN and look forward to next year's trip to Michigan. We look forward to seeing our other friends there. Until then, have a good rest of the year until we meet again.

Debbie and George Deskins Region "D", Murfreesboro, TN.

Camp-out at White River Campground Submitted by Laura Hull

I wish to thank everyone that attended the camp-out. This was a lot of fun. We arrived on Friday September 6th with Merle & Anita DeFord, Dan Fellows, and Frank and Carol Daumer. We all got set up and watched everyone arrive and helped where needed.

There was a good meal on Friday night and we paraded the bikes around the campground then sat around a campfire chatting.

On Saturday morning we had a great breakfast put on by Charlie Mutter and myself. Everyone pitched in to clean. We then went on a ride to the old town of Metamora, Indiana. That was very interesting! It was decided that we would fix supper at the campground instead of dining out so once again we had a great meal cooked by Charlie and myself with the aid of everyone.

There was another parade around the campground followed by campfire and breakfast Sunday morning. It was great to see that Merle was not the first one gone Sunday morning. Haha. We had Tony and

Diane Manry and Lynn and Karen Martin going with us for our ride on Saturday and Tom and Marcia Holmes came to the campground and stayed for supper on Saturday evening. We ended up with 17 people camping and 6 guests. We made some friends at the campground and one gentleman was so impressed he is planning on looking for a trike and camper this week.

Kim at the campground was a huge help with the reservations and making sure we had everything we needed. Those in attendance were: Jim Crissinger Laura Hull Charlie & Sam Mutter Merle and Anita DeFord Terry Goff Cliff and Norma Hopkins Frank and Carol Daumer Dan Fellows Barb and Sam Baker Bill Litz Tom and Colleen Howe Tony & Diane Manry Lynn & Karen Martin Tom & Marcia Holmes Thank you all for the help and support. It was just a whole lot of fun. We are looking forward to the next one. Sincerely, Laura Hull (Camping almost over in many parts of the states! Enjoy the time left.)

Weather Conditions Over Labor Day weekend I participated in the Southern California Motorcycle Association 3-Flags ride from Deming, New Mexico to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. During the ride to Deming and on the way home from Winnipeg, my riding partner and I encountered some weather conditions that made me decide to use Weather Conditions as my topic for my article this month. On the way to Deming near Lordsburg, New Mexico, we were riding in Interstate 10 when the rain began. In a very short period of time, we could not see the road due to the intensity of the rain coming down. We found an off ramp and quickly pulled under an overhang at a deserted service station. With the wind that had also come up we both got very wet in a short period of time. There wasn’t time to put on rain gear. After about 20 minutes the rain and wind subsided and we got back on I-10 for the ride to Deming. After reaching Deming we found out the New Mexico State Troopers had closed I-10 because of flash flooding. We were very fortunate but there was no lightening associated with this rain but we had seen it in the distance earlier in our travels. When we left Winnipeg to start our journey home, we traveled across the Trans Canada Highway to Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. This part of our adventure was uneventful. However, the next day we ran into rain again at the US Border. Fortunately, we had time to put on rain gear and stay dry. After going over the Highway to the Sun in Glacier National Park 0 in the sun, we went on to our next stop just outside of Spokane. After checking into our motel, we went for desert, and then back to our rooms. About 20 minutes after getting back to the motel the rain, lightening and thunder started. I have always heard that after a lightening strike you can tell how close it is by counting the seconds before you hear the

thunder. If that is the case the lightening was right over our head as you couldn’t even count to one before the sound reached us. This storm lasted for a couple of hours and was very impressive. While in the motel I was watching the Washington News and there was a story about a motorcycle rider in the Seattle area that had been hit by lightening. The picture of his helmet was quite a sight and the reporter indicated his hair had been fused to the inside of his helmet. Fortunately, he was not seriously injured but did spend a night in the hospital for observation. A couple of days later I received a phone call from my sister asking if I had seen the news about the helmet and the another rider. I had not heard about the other story but found out this rider was not so lucky. Apparently, this rider and passenger were riding in a lightening storm and decided to pull over and get under a tree. A lightening strike hit the rider and he was killed. I always heard not to get under trees. Many of us ride in areas of the country where weather can change very quickly. I have operated under the philosophy of, “Don’t lave home in the rain, but if you get caught in it make good decisions”. Whatever your “rain” philosophy is make sure you plan ahead for the Weather Conditions and know the best plan if you end up in a lightening and thunderstorm. One last thought about rain – watch the road condition and remember hydroplaning can be a real problem on the road. Be safe in all conditions. Doug Green GWTA Rider Education Director

Just thinking’. As you know, in addition to eating before our monthly meeting at Perkins, through the spring, summer and fall, we have weekly dinner rides every Wednesday evening (rain or shine). As the weather gets colder, we shift to dinner nights every other week and meet at an eatery.

Then we sometimes ride on a weekend to lunch someplace. In addition to eating with our GWTA friends, some of us ride with the ROMEO’s to eat on various days of the week, and some are also members of GWRRA and have another set of scheduled “eating” rides.

This leads to some questions - How much do you spend a week on “eating out”? How many meals/sandwiches do you eat a week? What is the price of an average sandwich - $6, $7, $8? Did you know that for the price of one $6.25 sandwich a month (with no taxes), you can be a member of GWTA?

When I first saw GWTA dues had reached $75 a year, I thought that was excessive, but it is only $6.25 a month. And, if it wasn’t for GWTA (the organization), there most likely wouldn’t be all those dinner rides and all those good friends to eat with. I found out about GWTA, Chapter B through our website. And, at only $6.25 a month, I plan to continue to support the organization that makes all these dinner rides with friends possible.

How about you?

A Life In The Days Of A Biker Pt. 10By: Dave Norton - Region A, Chapter M, Moutain Valley Riders.A Life in the Days of a Biker, Part 10

By Dave Norton Region A Chapter M, Mountain Valley Riders

The End of the Beginning Last time Dave had transformed his 360 Yamaha Enduro into a street legal dessert-capable demon… My riding buddy Terry’s (not his real name) family and my family spent Thanksgiving Weekend in ’78 camped out at Devils Playground, an area of desert sand dunes off the highway between Barstow and Baker in the Mojave Desert. This was in a time before the open desert areas in Southern California became overrun with motorhomes and toy haulers full of beer-guzzling desert rats, bikes and buggies. Terry had a new Suzuki RM370, I my Yamaha 360 Enduro set up for desert.

We pulled the bikes off the trailer, suited up, mounted up, ready for the first ride. Key on, gas on, kill switch off, choke on: kickity. Kickity. Kickity-kickity-kickity-kickity nothing. Check everything, all OK. Gimme a push Terry! Push-push-push-push rrrrrmmmp. No fire. Must be flooded,

or fouled. Pull the plug, its wet. New plug. Repeat all the above.

Photo: motorbike-search-engine.co.uk Photo: Dave Norton

All right, time for Drastic Measures. Wrap a tow strap around the bar brace a few times, hold on to the tag end. Other end tied to the truck. Get rolling, 15 mph, drop clutch in third: rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Nothing. Run it up to 30. Drop the clutch: rrrrrrrwaaaaaAAAAAAAAEEEEEEE! I’m now WFO at 30 mph 10 feet behind a truck with a rope around my handlebar! I honestly don’t remember what happened next, but I found myself on my back in the sand next to my screaming bike! Hit the kill switch. Check for damage. All’s OK. What the hell happened? The tiedown in the truck had pulled the throttle cable housing out of its hole (sound familiar?) leaving the throttle WFO. With the drama out of the way, we spent a delightful two days playing Steve, Mert and Malcolm out on the sand.

My sonChristopher got his intro into dirt riding, at a suitably sedate rate, in my lap.

Photo: Dave Norton

Chris is now a Suit, working for the VA, enjoying his Triumph 750 triple, waiting to find just the right Norton Commando he wants. Terry and I were back at Devil's Playground on Thanksgiving Weekend again in ’79, thankfully without my son. We were returning to camp on the winding dirt road from the dunes, play-racing. I was the more experienced rider; his RM370 was the faster bike. My front tire had punctured and he was leading. Terry was blind in one eye. Entering a blind turn on his blind side, Terry struck a dune buggy head on with a closing speed of probably 50 mph. He went over the bars and landed in the dirt, flat on his back. I ran up and found him conscious, both legs badly

mangled, one torn off but for a bit of thigh and pumping blood. I used my wadded-up shirt pressed against the stump to slow the loss of blood. The buggy driver was unhurt, and drove to camp for help. In minutes, or was it hours, we had a pickup truck, several guys, boards and tape for splints, and radio contact with the San Bernardino County Sherriff. Winds were too high for a LifeFlight evacuation. We loaded Terry into the pickup, drove most of the 20+ miles out on the dirt road, and transferred him to an ambulance ride to Barstow Urgent Care. They got him stable for the longer ride to Loma Linda Medical Center. By the time we got him to a hospital bed it was six hours since he hit the ground. We nearly lost him twice during that time.

I loved motorcycles for 20 years. I still did after the accident, and I still do today. But I can no longer take the unbridled joy I used to in pushing a dirt bike to its limits and occasionally

beyond. The pleasure derived is simply no longer worth the pain of remembrance. I'd like to say that Terry recovered, that they saved his legs, that he was able to live a normal life once again. Much as I would like to, I can't. He fought a lingering infection that finally forced amputation several years after the accident. He couldn't take it. He lost his marriage, his job, his home, his self-worth, all that was dear to him. *******************************

My beloved 360 Enduro moved on to another lucky (I hope) rider for $550. It would take another three years of soul-searching, dreaming, sketching, reading, researching, designing, drawing and building before I had my response to this tragedy. Stay tuned for chapter 11: Yikes! Shrikes! *********************************

THE BUCKET LIST

Everyone has a bucket list….or you should have……of the things that you absolutely want to do at some point in your life. Well, Kim was able to check off one of things on her bucket list while we were attending Gold Rush in Big Sky, Montana. Big Sky was beautiful and offered tremendous areas for riding. The group that traveled to Gold Rush with us were thrilled to be able to visit Yellowstone for their first time and visited a number of times during the rally. They were privileged to see a great deal of wildlife including buffalo, elk, eagles, osprey and they even saw a bear!

Some of the folks in our traveling group had never been “Out West” and they thoroughly enjoyed the trip and even were able to extend their trip by a few extra weeks (that comes with the privilege of retirement, we guess!). At any rate, Kim has ALWAYS wanted to see a living, breathing moose. For those of you that have seen and experienced

moose at some point, you know just how BIG they are and Kim had always heard that they were HUGE, MEAN and you “DON’T WANT TO SEE ONE IN YOUR HEADLIGHTS!”. It wasn’t enough to just hear about it, she wanted to actually SEE one! So on the day set aside during Gold Rush to be able to just ride, we were able to do just that and were able to visit an authentic pioneer village, Virginia City. During the trip, we noticed that it appeared that the weather was bringing in a thunderstorm, so we cut our trip short and decided to try to get back to Big Sky before the storm came. No such luck. When we got just outside of Bozeman, we decided to prepare ourselves for the inevitable and out came the rain suits. None too soon! We got into the mountains and the sky let loose. The rain came down in sheets and the wind picked up! Along with the rain came the pea sized hail and we were very grateful that we were wearing helmets (as we always do) and some of us even were fortunate to have face shields. That was good protection from that hail because IT HURT! We pulled off the side of the road to wait out the storm. As the rain lessened, we decided there was no time like the present to continue on the trip back to Big Sky and THERE SHE WAS!!!!! A female moose (cow) eating in the river! The leader of our group had not seen her in the river but we were sure to notify him and he willingly turned around to go back to the site where we had seen her. Sure enough! She was still there eating and we were even

28 October 2013

lucky enough to have a pull off right across the street from where she stood in the river. Of course, we HAD to get the photo op and got off of the bikes to take a large number of pictures of KIM’S FIRST MOOSE!!! Some of the gals even waded across a shallow part of the river to get a closer shot of her! Oh happy day!! A real MOOSE!

Now, Kim has been able to check that one off of her bucket list! Hopefully all of you have started doing the things you have always wanted to do and maybe you were fortunate enough to be able to include some of your friends along the way. GWTA offers so many opportunities to visit so many parts of the country and see some fantastic things that we hope you all have been able to at least begin to take advantage of them and plan to make it the opportunity to go to that many more places in the future! Keep adding to that BUCKET LIST and keep on traveling! We know we are looking forward to all of the trips that GWTA has to offer and all of the new friends we are making along the way! Sunny side up!! Bob & Kim Davis

Gold Wing Touring Association (GWTA) or should it actually be the

Greatest Family In The World (GFITW). My lovely wife and I have been Life members since May 1988 starting with Chapter “C” in San Diego, California. We met and have had life long friends from that chapter. To this day many of the members are close friends or more than that they are family. No matter what has transpired in our lives those friends/family have been there to support us in every endeavor. We sold our wing back in 1995 and moved into doing other things and still these same people remained friends/family. In April 2009 we moved to Canyonville, Oregon. Shortly after moving I started looking for a used Goldwing. And to my surprise a great friend/family person whom we knew for at least 21 years had his 1990 SE for sale back in San Diego. We threw a bag together and left for San Diego where I purchased the bike. The funny thing is that I used to do maintenance on this bike back in 1990 to 1993 whenever I did routine maintenance to my own 1990 Goldwing. After riding the bike back to Oregon I looked up a GWTA Chapter here and we found the Rogue Valley Wings, Chapter “A” in Grants Pass. My wife and I went to a chapter meeting and we seemed to click with the group. I didn’t think I would ever be able to get my lovely bride to camp again. But, we started camping with the chapter and my wife loved doing it. We were on a little ride with a few of the members when I spun the drive shaft on my trike. Immediately Scott and Sharon Starke rode home to get their truck and trailer and we loaded the Trike on the trailer and took it to Starke’s house. Then Sharon and Scotty gave us a ride home, which was 35 miles away. I called California Side Car the next morning and they happened to have a 2006 shaft and had them ship it overnight. Nancy and I drove to Scotty’s after receiving the shipment and he helped me replace the drive shaft, which put us back on the road that afternoon. Both Scotty & Sharon went out of their way to help us, which shows the caring of members in this organization. About a year ago my wife started having balance problems, which made it difficult for her to walk around without help. This made it very difficult

when we were camping and she needed to use the facilities. Well the chapter ladies stepped right up and would help her get to wherever she needed to go if I wasn’t there at the moment. Even if we were just out with the chapter on a ride or at a restaurant for lunch or dinner there was a chapter lady there to help Nancy. We became Oregon State directors in 2011 and this last State Rally 2013 was the event of our lives. Nancy together with several of the other ladies in Chapter “A” put a lot of effort with on decorations and other events. Nancy and I were helped by everyone attending to make the event so great. If I was busy doing something, one of the ladies was making sure Nancy was helped if needed. Nancy had a medical problem since the rally and we had signed up to support the Ride the Rogue River bicycle run. We did make it in our car and were on the road when the bandage started leaking and of course our Chapter Director Ken Krois said drop all the bike stuff at the start and get Nancy wherever we had to go to get her taken care of. I did just that and had almost gotten home from the Roseburg Hospital when Ken called to check on her. Again, it shows the caring of our GWTA family. While Nancy is going through all this stuff, I had a dentist appointment to have all my upper teeth removed and the night before I received a phone call from Marty & Carmen Warren asking if I needed to have someone drive me home afterwards. I didn’t know so I called the dentist the first thing in the morning and was informed that everything would be done using local anesthetic. I called the Warren’s and let them know and was informed if I needed anything to call. It’s not a trip around the block for them they live 30 miles away.
