Construction Diagram

Digital Fabrication Part 1

Material:1/8 inch acrylic

Digital fabrication allows for physical construction methods that would be either very challenging or impossible to do by hand. However it also introduces some specific construction techniques that are condusive to laser cut models.

This project employs three different joining techniques

1) Box Joint 2) Butt Joint 3) Lamination

Each model uses one or more of the listed techniques in order to demonstrate their benefits and or downsides.

1/8 inch acrylic is the material of choice in order to highlight the joining process that would not be visible with the use of opaque materials like plywood. This particular thickness was selected in order to visualize a higher density lamination process as well as thinner walls on enclosed box designs versus thicker material.

Joining Methods

This project is based off of a previous assignment that took the theme of compression and was used to transform a simple cube into a final form that conveys the theme.
