EVANGELISM

1. WHAT IS EVANGELISM ? Soul winning

(The first responsibility to the Great commission)

• Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

• Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

• Luke 24:47 That repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem

EVANGELISM

THE GOOD HERITAGE OF SOUL WINNING

• In Jerusalem

The first preaching by Peter on the day of Pentecost (Acts. 2: 14- 40)

Effect: Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. (Acts.2: 41-42)

• Progression in Judea

Acts 4: 4 And the number of the men was about five thousand.

Acts 5:14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.

Acts 6:1 In those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied.

EVANGELISM

• Furtherance to Samaria

Acts 8: 4- 5 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

Acts 8: 25 And they (Peter and John), when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

• To the uttermost parts

Acts 11:19-21 Traveled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.

When they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the

Lord Jesus.

STARTED SENDING OUT MISSIONARIES

• Church in Antioch sent out missionaries first.

Paul and Silas were sent (Acts 13:2-3)

(All missionary Journeys of Paul were from Antioch)

• Church in Thessalonica an example in evangelism. From them spread to Macedonia and Achaia (1.The.1:8)

• Church at Philippi was example for supporting

Supported financially in spite of difficulty (Phil:4: 15)

“The church that does not evangelize will fossilize.”

Oswald J Smith

EVANGELISM

PASSION FOR SOULS

• Every Christian must be a soul winner. Do the work of an evangelist (2.Timothy 4:5)

• One must feel that he is a debtor I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians (Rom.1: 14-15)

• Woe is unto me, if I preach no the gospel. For though I preach the gospel…. (1.Corinthians 9:16)

• Do you feel guilty, if not speaking the gospel?

Then they (The lepers) said one to another…….. (2. King 7:9) Is it a time to receive money, and garments… (2.King 5: 26)

(Where there is no vision, there is no passion, where there is no passion there is no action. - Alan Redpath)

EVANGELISM

• TRAINING FOR EVANGELISM

• Jesus said; I will make you fishers of men (Mat.4: 19) “Evangelist” a gift to the Church (Eph. 4: 11)

• Bible schools can give degrees; but not a heart to win souls;

Do not equate degrees with dedication for soul winning.

• The Church (Elders) must be convinced before commenting them (Acts: 13: 2) They also must prove it in the home assembly (Acts. 16: 1-2)

• Duty seems more outside the church; where can find souls. (Where is their duty; inside or outside the church ?)

• Surely the training equips one to be a good evangelist

EVANGELISM

2. THE SPHERE OF SOUL WINNING Authority or power• Acts 1: 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is

come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both n Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth

• Home mission- Do you neglect it ? 1. Among your own household 2. Among people of your home town

Jesus Said: Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, (Mk.5: 18-19)

• Distant or overseas mission ? To the uttermost part of the world (Mat.28:19)

EVANGELISM

Home mission the first priority (Jerusalem)

Have you tried to win your unsaved father, mother, brother, sister, husband, wife, or children to the Lord?

• a. A father (head of the household) could bring his children to salvation Cornelius (Acts.10: 33) Jailor in Philippi (Acts.16: 32) Crispus (Acts.18: 8)

• b. A mother could bring her children to the salvation Lydia (Acts. 16:15) Timothy (Acts.16: 1; 2.Tim1: 5)

• c. A brother could bring his brother to the salvation Andrew brought Simon to the Lord. (Jn.1: 40-41)

• d. Husband /Wife could bring his/her spouse to the salvation. (1. Pet. 3: 1; 1. Cor: 7: 12- 14)

(Don’t be like Cain ! “Am I my brothers keeper”? Gen.4: 9)

EVANGELISM

3. THE MISSION FIELD

Mission in your home town (Judea)

Philip findeth Nathanael (of the same city) John 1: 44-45

• a. Jesus came to his home and hometown (Luke 4:16)

• b. The Samaritan woman went to the city men (John 4: 28-29)

• c. The demon- possessed man went to the Decapolis (Mk.5: 20)

• d. Timothy was holding a good testimony among his country men (Acts.16: 2)

• e. The Sunday school teacher can lead his/ her students (Sunday schools, VBS, CEF all are ways to win children)

(Prove at home before gets commented for distant mission)

Page 12: Evangelism

EVANGELISM

Mission to the uttermost part of the world (Foreign or Distant mission) An obedience to the call “to the uttermost

part”

The Three missionary journeys of Paul the Apostle

(All began from Antioch and first and second ended at Antioch) Acts 13:2 The Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

1st Journey - AD.47-49 (Acts. 13:2- 14:26)2nd Journey - AD.50-53 (Acts. 15:35- 18: 22)3rd Journey - AD.53- 57 (Acts.18: 23- 21: 3)

EVANGELISM

4. WHAT IS GOSPEL

• Gospel is the “good news” or “good tidings” (Lk.2: 10-11) Man not the author of the Gospel (Galatians 1:11) was promised in the Holy Scriptures (Rom.1: 2) Now brought the life and immortality to light (2.Tim.1: 10) It is the gospel of Grace (Acts. 20: 24)

• The different names called for the Gospel of Grace.

Gospel of the Grace of God (Acts. 20: 4)

The glorious gospel of Christ (2. Cor.4: 4)The glorious gospel of the blessed God (1. Tim.1: 11)The gospel of peace (Eph.6: 15)The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (2.Thes.1:8) The gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God (Mk.1: 1)The Gospel of Christ (Rom.1: 16; 15:19; 29; 1.Cor.9: 12; 18)The Gospel of God (1.The.2: 2; 2:8; 9; 1.Pet.4: 17; Rom.1:1; 15:16)

EVANGELISM

What is Gospel (The definition from the Bible itself)

• 2.Timothy 2: 8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

• 1.Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

• For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

(If the vicarious death on the cross for the forgiveness of sins; the burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ for justification if not preached; it is not the gospel at all)

Page 15: Evangelism

EVANGELISM

The Gospel of the Grace of God is different from

• 1. Gospel of the Kingdom (Matthew 24:13-14)

(Began to preach by John the Baptist and then by the Lord himself, but postponed since the king was rejected and so the kingdom also postponed)

• 2. The everlasting Gospel (Revelation 14:6-7)

(The gospel of grace is not entrusted or could be preached by the angels)

• 3. “Another Gospel” (Which is not gospel at all- Gal 1: 6-9)

(Eg: The Christ who gives the prosperity, Bondage breaking, demands to do the work of the law for perfecting salvation etc,.)

EVANGELISM

GOSPEL MUST BE PREACHED

• How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?

• And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent?

• As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!(Romans 10:17)

• So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Rom.10: 12-17; Isaiah 52: 7)

• References from the Acts of the Apostles• Peter preached on the day of Pentecost (Acts. 2: 22)• Apostles (Acts. 4:33; 5:42)• Those who were scattered by persecution (Acts.8: 4)• Philip in Samaria (Acts. 8:5) and to eunuch (Acts. 8:35)• Peter and others (Acts. 8: 25; 10:34)• Paul began to preach (Acts.9: 19)

EVANGELISM

5. REQUIREMENTS TO BE AN EVANGELIST

• Assurance of his call (Gal.1: 15-16; 2: 7-9)

• One must do it as if a priest doing the offer (Rom.15: 16)

• Gospel must be preached freely (2Cor.11: 7)

• He must not try to please men or institutions (Gal.1: 10)

• Service acceptable to God, and approved of men. (Rom.14: 16-18)

• He must not be ashamed of the gospel (Rom.1: 16)

• He must be willing to suffer for the Gospel (1.Cor. 9: 12)

• Never abuse the liberty. (1.Cor.9: 18)

“If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice that I can make can be too great for Him” – C. T. Studd

EVANGELISM

• Ten examples from the life of Paul (1.The.2: 1-12)

• 1.Was bold in God to speak the gospel of God (v.2)

• 2.The exhortation was not of deceit or uncleanness, nor.. (v.3)

• 3.Was not pleasing men (v.4)

• 4.Never used flattering words (v.5)

• 5.Never sought glory from men (v.6)

• 6.Was gentle among them (v.7)

Can we claim these virtues in our ministry?

EVANGELISM

6. In selecting the people or place for evangelism Desire to preach where Christ is not preached

(Often Gospel is preached to the same people or places

again and again)

• Not on an another man’s foundation (Rom.15: 20)

• To preach beyond the regions (2.Cor.10: 16)

• To find fruit among new people (Rom.1: 13)

• Desire to move to new places (Rom.15: 23)

“Why should anybody hear the gospel twice before others hear

it once.”- Oswald J Smith.

EVANGELISM

7. Method of Evangelism

• Can you make use of advanced developments for evangelism?

Have not the invention of printing press made copies of Bibles, books or tracts easy availability?

Have not the communication, Computers and transport made it easy to reach people?

That which is not harmful, why we should not use?

• Yet some of the old methods can never become obsolete.

• House to house evangelism (Acts5: 2; 20: 20)• Individual (personal) evangelism (Acts 13: 7; 28: 30-31)• Synagogues (Places of religious gatherings –Acts 19: 8)• Market place (Place where people gather- Acts 17: 17)

Page 22: Evangelism

EVANGELISM

Method of Evangelism (Conti..)

River side (Beaches, markets, meet for leisure or business)

Acts.16: 13 House or buildings taken for rent (Conduct teachings, Bible classes etc) Acts. 19: 9-10

Do the conventions serve this purpose now ? (Have not the conventions become an yearly program; than a method to

reach the un-reached?)

The Schools, hospitals and orphanages were venue for gospel (If we are doing with a lucrative motive, no doubt we have lost our vision.)

Esther 4:14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise ..

From another place

EVANGELISM

Bible does not restrict woman to share the Gospel

• Woman are restricted from preaching or teaching (In public) (1.Cor. 14: 34-35; 1.Tim.2: 11-12) The good news of the Lord’s resurrection Lord Jesus,

entrusted to Mary Magdalene (Jn.20: 17-18)

• Areas where women were helpful in the Gospel. (Lk.8: 3; Luke 23: 55; Phil.4: 3)

• Will all who listen believe?

• It is the Lord who saves (Holy Spirit convicts…- Jn.16: 7-11) It may not work out the salvation in everyone who have heard

(Hebrews 4:2)

• As many as were ordained to eternal life will believe.(Acts.13: 48)• Those judged unworthy of everlasting life will not (Acts.13:46)

• But still our duty is to preach the gospel (1. Cor.9: 16)

Page 24: Evangelism

EVANGELISM

8. Areas of responsibilities in Gospel (From Philippians)

• Fellowship in the Gospel (Phil.1: 5)

• Defense of the Gospel (Phil.1: 7; 17)

• Confirmation of the Gospel (Phil.1: 7)

• Furtherance of the Gospel (Phil. 1: 12)

• Faith of the Gospel (Phil.1: 27)

• Service in the Gospel (Phil. 2: 22)

• Giving and receiving (Finance) of the Gospel (Phil.4: 15)

(Church at Philippi was an example for the above)

Page 25: Evangelism

EVANGELISM

• Support for evangelist

• Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. (Read 1.Cor. 9: 1-19)

(Eg. that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? –1.Cor.9: 13-14)It is the duty of the believers to support (Titus 3: 12)

• Support for evangelism

• Church in Philippi was an example (Phil.4: 15)• The principle of giving read (2.Cor.Ch. 8 and 9) • Do not accept from unbelievers (Ezra 4: 3; 3.Jn.7-9)

(The unbeliever must never be given a chance to feel that evangelism is “a money making business”) “The Lord’s work done in Lord’s way lacks no resources.” Hudson Tailor.

9. The reward for soul winning

Paul wrote

Dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown (Phil.4: 1)

For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye (1.The.2: 19-20)

(Crown of rejoicing; the Soul winners Crown)

(Dan.12: 3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness

of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as

the stars for ever and ever.)

EVANGELISM

Beloved of the Lord

Your salvation is the free gift (Eph.2: 8) but to get the rewards you need to work. How can you face Him with out a soul won for him?

“Must I go- and empty handed?” Thus my dear Redeemer meet? Not one day of service give him,

Lay no trophy at His feet?

“Must I go- and empty handed” Must I meet my Saviour so?

Not one soul with which to greet Him? Must I empty handed go?
