IntroductionTheMedicalLicentiate(ML)TrainingProgrammeisaresponsetothesevereshortageofdoctorsinthecountryandespeciallyintheruralareasofZambia.TheMLTrainingProgrammeaimstoprovidetheoreticalandpracticaltrainingininternalmedicine,paediatrics,gynaecologyandsurgery,sothatMLsareabletodiagnosepatients,performarangeofessentialsurgicaloperationsaswellasmanageandrunLevel1hospitals.AnadditionalfocusoftheMLtrainingisonemergencycare,whichconstitutesabigneedintheperiphery.
ObjectiveTheaimistoimprovehealthinthelongruninruralareasbyimprovingthequalityoftrainingforMLsandbybuildingcapacityinasustainableway.Withthisstudy,weevaluatedthepilotphaseoftheMLe-learningplatforminordertoanalysethemethodologicalapproach,withregardsto:• feasibility• contentsneedsassessment• usability• acceptance
Results
ConclusionandOutlookTheMLE-learningwithitstablet-basedcomponentofferingofflinelearninghasprovenduringthepilotphasetobeapromisingtool,asitwashighlyacceptedbyMLstudentsandMLmedicalteachingstaff.TheMLE-learningprovedasfeasibleformedicaltrainingwithintheMLprogramme.Theintegrationofsiteconsultantsandlecturersintheprocessofcontentdevelopmentwassuccessfullyinitiated.Theongoing,multimethodological evaluationoftheMLE-learningwilllookintoeffectivenessintermsofgainingmedicalknowledgeandskills,students’satisfaction,attitudesandusabilitytowardse-learning,alsowithrespecttosustainability.

ThesehospitalsaredistributedthroughoutZambia.Studentsundergotwoyearsofclinicalrotation.Oneoftheshortcomingsinthepracticumsitesistheshortageofmedicalteachersandthelackofclinicallearningmaterialstoblendwithpracticalbedsidelearningandtutoring.
