Evaluation 5 -How did you attract/address your audience?

The Women in Black One main similarity between our film opening and The Women in Black is the fact that the protagonist is fighting an unknown force. Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Arthur Kipps, is fighting a spirit who is trying to find something and someone that she has lost. Similarly in our film opening Christa is trying to fight a force for something she believes has been lost in human society.

Similar Films…

They both share the same genre, being thriller/horror. The film is set in a late clients house, so the lighting is very dim creating a creepy feel, which is a convention of the thriller theme. One main way our films are also similar is the fact that they both include paranormal activity, denoting events that are beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding. This helps our film attract a certain audience who are interested in this specific type of thriller/horror.

Similar films…The Conjuring

This film is also very similar to our opening, this is because they both focus mainly on religion. During The Conjuring, the Warrens who are paranormal investigators, encourage the family to all be baptized for protection from these unknown forces, however their lack of faith makes them easy targets. They also uses tactics found in scripture to help cast away the forces, just like Christa is taking comfort in the church to protect herself from the mysterious forces in our opening.

However, one way in which our films differ is the music. During our opening we have very apparent automated music, where as The Conjuring has orchestral, subtle and tension building tracks playing behind the action. This difference may have occurred due to the time difference in them being produced. The Conjuring was released in 2013 and since then electronic music has developed a lot more, with more technology available for this to happen.

• Addressing the Audience…Addressing the audience is also very significant as it make them feel more important. If they can relate to the film or aspire to it, it should encourage them to watch it. We did this by using a young female protagonist. We believed this would be attractive to a large audience as the character was very ordinary and easy to relate to.

• Attracting The Audience…It was very important that we focused on attracting our audience, because as you can see, my audience questionnaire analysis showed that not many teens were into thrillers. So we focused on this by tacking a typical horror film, set in a church, dim lighting etc. and adding a intriguing twist by introducing the idea of a conflict between God and the human race. I hoped this would entice our potential audience to come and see our film and also encourage them to spread the word by mouth due to the confliction in the storyline.
