Evacuation Planning
• Set family meeting places at 10 mile distance rings from your home. • Use your Family Communications Plan wallet cards to keep in touch.
Evacuation Guidelines Always: If Time Permits:
1. Keep a full tank of gas in your car if an evacuation seems likely. Gas stations may be closed during emergencies and unable to pump gas during power outages. Plan to take one car per family to reduce congestion and delay.
2. Make transportation arrangements with friends or your local government if you do not own a car.
3. Listen to a battery-powered radio and follow local evacuation instructions.
4. Gather your family and go if you are instructed to evacuate immediately.
5. Do not leave your pets, take them with you. Be aware that not all shelters allow pets except for service animals (seeing-eye dogs, etc.,)
6. Leave early enough to avoid being trapped by severe weather or traffic.
7. Follow recommended evacuation routes. Do not take shortcuts; they may be blocked.
8. Be alert for washed-out roads and bridges. Do not drive through flooded areas.
9. Stay away from downed power lines.
10. Let others know where you are going.
1. Gather your disaster supplies kit.
2. Wear sturdy shoes, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, hat, and gloves to provide some protection.
3. Secure your home:
• Close and lock doors and windows.
• Unplug electrical equipment, such as radios and televisions, and small appliances such as toasters and microwaves. Leave freezers and refrigerators plugged in unless there is a risk of flooding.
4. If you have to evacuate, make sure you provide your out-of-area contact with the following information:
• Where you are now.
• Where you are going.
• What route you are taking.
• How are you getting to the destination point (driving, bus, railroad, airplane, etc?)
• Who is with you (include pets if you have them and are taking them with you. Otherwise leave name of facility at which you are leaving your pets).
• Is this a voluntary or mandatory evacuation?
5. Make arrangements if you need to leave your pets.
