European Invasion

New World Emerges

History

• SS8H1 The student will evaluate the

development of Native American

cultures and the impact of European

exploration and settlement on the

Native American cultures in Georgia.

• b. Evaluate the impact of European

contact on Native American cultures;

include Spanish missions along the

barrier islands, and the explorations of

Hernando DeSoto.

• c. Explain reasons for European

exploration and settlement of North

America, with emphasis on the interests

of the French, Spanish, and British in the

southeastern area.

1. To what extent did European

contact effect native groups

in Georgia?

2. Explain reasons for European

exploration and settlement of

North America.

3. What was the purpose of

building Spanish Missions in

Georgia?

4. What was the cause and

effect relationship of French,

Spanish, and British

settlements in Georgia?

Walk it Out

• Has there ever been a

time in your life when you

have been jealous of

what some else had and

wished that you could

have what they had?

• Has there ever been a

time in your life that you

hurt some else to be

liked by others?

After De Soto’s Voyage

• After De Soto’s voyage to the new world, Spain

began to Colonize Florida and Georgia. Spain

began building Spanish missions in hopes of

converting the natives to Christianity.

• During this time Spain became very rich and

powerful. Soon countries such as England and

France began to resent Spain and become very

jealous of their new found wealth and popularity.

In today’s terms they became haters!!

God

Gold

Glory (international fame and power)

•Missions (churches) were established along

the barrier islands to convert Natives to

Christianity.

•Many of these failed due to lack of

cooperation by the Native Americans. Some

were successful and built relationships with

natives.

•Another Spanish attempt at colonizing parts

of northeast Georgia failed.

The Spanish had three goals in

exploration

Page 5: European Invasion New World Emerges

England and France

Want What Spain Has

Cause • England and France

wanted what Spain had.

• They wanted wealth and

power and decided to steal

to get what they wanted.

• England and France began

devise separate plans on

how to take land that Spain

had claimed as theirs.

Hernando de Soto

• De Soto

Marched thru GA

• As he marched

through GA,

thousands of

Indians were

tortured and

killed.

• Most died of

European

Disease.

These are Spanish Missions & Forts

along Georgia’s coast between

1526 – 1686 (after de Soto’s visit).

On your map, draw 10 crosses to

represent the 10 Spanish Missions.

Draw 3 X’s to represent the 3

Spanish Forts.

What was the purpose of

building Spanish Missions in

Georgia?

1. Claim land for Spain and

protect this land from other

countries.

2. Convert natives to Christianity.

Some missions were

successful but most natives

moved away from the mission

further inland.

On your map, draw a mini Eiffel

Tower north of Savannah to

represent France’s Charles Fort.

The French built Charles Fort

north of present day Savannah on

Parris Island, South Carolina.

Georgia was caught between the

Spanish to the south and the

French to the north.

The Prevailing

Westerlies &

Northeast Trade

Winds helped

European ships

explore the

southeast.

Page 10: European Invasion New World Emerges

The Gulf

Stream &

North Atlantic

currents

helped send

ships back to

Europe.

English Pirates

• At the same time England's

monarchy had funded several

voyages. England had the

greatest Navy and the fastest

ships on the ocean.

• Queen Elizabeth hired English

commanders to pillage

Spanish ships, steal all its

precious cargo, and often

times sink the ships so that

Spain could not continue to

grow rich and powerful.

Page 12: European Invasion New World Emerges

England Takes What

Spain Had.

In addition, English soldiers began landing in

Florida and Georgia and began burning the many

Spanish missions that Spain had worked so hard

to build.

Effect 1. Spain began to loose power and eventually Spain lost

all power in North America.

2. British claim all lands east of the Appalachian

Mountains.

3. France claimed in Canada and parts of North America.

4. Spanish soldiers retreated to Southern Florida.

Mercantilism

• Now that England had all this new land they need people to come to the new world and

begin setting up colonies. The new theory of Mercantilism evolved:

Mercantilism

1. Trade and colonies exist only to make England more rich and powerful.

2. England will regulate production in the colonies and trade with other countries.

3. Colonies will become self-sufficient and will not need or buy goods from other countries.

4. England should export more than they import the idea of selling instead of buying.

Page 14: European Invasion New World Emerges

3 ways the colonies

promoted mercantilism:

1. Supplied cheap raw

materials (England

didn’t have to get these

from another country)

2. Supplied cheap labor

(indentured servants,

slaves)

3. Provided a larger

market for trade

The Need for

Propaganda

England began using propaganda promising their people

great and wonderful things if they would leave England

and journey to the new world. England convinced the

people that with colonization.

England and its

people stood to

gain glory, profit,

and adventure.

Just Think….

• The younger sons of English nobility, lacking

property at home, would have new lands to lord

over.

• Merchants would have exotic products to bring

home and new markets in which to sell their goods.

• The clergy could convert "savages" to Christianity.

• The landless poor, who burdened English towns

and cities in increasing numbers, would have

opportunity to rise up from their poverty and own

their own land.

Page 17: European Invasion New World Emerges

England Begins to get

Rich Quick!

• England began to get rich. People from all

over were coming to the New World.

Goods such as fish, lumber, and animal

skins came from northern colonies, middle

colonies provided crops such as rice, dyes

(indigo), and tobacco.

• As more land was being cultivated and

more crops needed more labor was

needed to work the fields.
