Right Bank versus Left Bank? The Right Bank falls north of the Seine River — home to theChamps-Elysées, the Louvre, and the artistocratic neighborhood ofLe Marais.

The Left Bank, south of the Seine and cradle of the Sorbonne, isconsidered the center of intellectual and artistic life.

Must–do monumentsOne of the most recognized monuments in the world, the EiffelTower attracts more than 6 million visitors each year. The viewsfrom uppermost platforms are best an hour before sunset.

Visiting Napoleon’s Arc de Triomphe should also top your list. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arch honors thosekilled during WWI, and the eternal flame honors those killed inboth World Wars.

Île-de-la-Cité: The birthplace of ParisThe birthplace of Paris and the site of its most significant church— the Cathédrale Notre-Dame — Île-de-la-Cité has become a kindof pilgrimage site. Cross the footbridge to Île-St.-Louis to stroll itscharming residential neighborhood.

Must-see museumsOriginally a royal palace, the Louvre now houses such legendaryworks as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, “Venus de Milo”,and “Winged Victory”. Spend some time in the Jardin des Tuileriesjust outside the museum.

The second-most important museum in Paris, the Musée d’Orsay isa work of art itself. The transformed railroad station holds animpressive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionisticpaintings.

Walks to takeParis is, above all, a pedestrian city. St.-Germain-des-Prés in theLatin Quarter is lined with famous cafés, where intellectuals stillmeet to discuss the issues of the day. Continue to Montparnasse, once home to expatriate literati such as Ernest Hemingway.

Trek up the hill in Montmartre, also an artist’s haunt, past theMoulin Rouge, and on to Sacré-Coeur. You will be rewarded withwonderful views.

Finally, be sure to take the most famous walk of all: Along theChamps-Elysées.

The eternal allure of ParisIt’s the most visited destination in the world — a city of lights and romance,

high cuisine and high art, a simple baguette with cheese. Below are a few suggestions to start you on your way.

The French Riviera

Cascading villages and seaside promenades

The Riviera stretches for 125 delicious miles along theMediterranean Sea in southeastern France. Shielded by theAlps, the region basks in warmth and sunshine yearround. Here, hillside villages cascade in pastel colorstoward the sea.

The quality of light in the Riviera has long attractedpainters and sunworshippers. While paintbrushes areoptional, be sure to pack your bikini.

CannesOne word captures Cannes: Glamour. Climb the famousstairs of the Palais des Festivals, where the Cannes FilmFestival is held; stroll the seaside Promenade la Croisette;or sunbathe on the beaches fashion designer Coco Chanelmade famous.

Monte–CarloAlso twenty minutes from Nice, Monte–Carlo — a merethree-quarters miles square — actually resides in thePrincipality of Monaco. Most come for the gambling, theglitz, and the yearly Grand Prix. The rococo Monte–CarloCasino is a must-see.

GrasseWitness the entire perfume-making process — from petalto drop — at a number of perfumeries. Three-quarters ofthe world’s essences are distilled in Grasse from the abundant lavender, jasmine, and other regional flowers.

MentonWhen you think of Menton, think of lemons. The warmestplace in France, the city grows lemons in profusion —and even holds a yearly lemon festival. In this lovely seaside village, particularly along the promenade du Soleil,it’s always a “walk in the sun.”

Additional areas of interest in the French Riviera include Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, and St.-Paul de Vence.

NicePerhaps it is 300 days of sunshine per year that cause theNiçois to be so friendly. With its charm and casuallifestyle, Nice has attracted many artists, including Chagalland Matisse.

Land of lavender and lightYou, too, could spend a year in Provence. Its sublime lighthas attracted painters for more than a century. You arelikely familiar already with this lavender landscape of VanGogh and Cézanne from their paintings.

MarseilleFounded by Greeks more than 2,500 years ago, Marseilleis the oldest city in France and one of the liveliest ports inthe world. Visit the colorful Vieux Port (Old Port) andsample competing versions of the city’s classic fish stew:bouillabaisse.

AvignonThis walled medieval city is one of the most interestingand beautiful in all of Europe. Visit the formidable Palaisdes Papes (Palace of the Popes), where the supremacy ofRome was nearly overturned in the 14th century.

Perhaps more famous are the ruins of the 12th centurypont St.–Bénézet, which juts into the Rhône. This is thebridge of the well-known children’s rhyme, “Sur le pontd’Avignon, l’on y danse, l’on y danse,” and also aUNESCO World Heritage Site.

GordesThis hilltop village is one of the most beautiful in France. Its white-stone houses spiral upward to the stunning castleand church. Outside, soak in panoramic views of theLubéron Mountains; inside, visit the Pol Mara Museum, which features works by the contemporary Flemishpainter.

Saint-Rémy-de-ProvenceDiscover authentic Provençal living in this blissfully quietvillage located at the base of the Alpilles Mountains. Here, the market is truly local, the old men play boules, and thelight falls over the landscape as beautifully as it did in VanGogh’s day.

You can visit St. Paul’s Monastery, where the painter con-valesced after cutting off his left ear. Although his cell isnot open, the Romananesque chapel and cloisters areworth the trip.
