It was wonderful to meet so many new students during classroom visits last week and I look forward to getting to know each of our new families during the school year. From visiting classrooms and making observations in the playground it was great to see how well the children have settled in to their new classes. They all appear keen and eager to learn and very happy to be returning to school! As a school we welcome the following new members of staff to Eumundi for 2018: Mrs Sarah McDonagh – Deputy Principal P-2 Sector Mrs Kym Trewick – Head of Curriculum Mrs Marissa East – Year One Mrs Amanda Frost – Year Three Mrs Claudia Hansen – Year Three Miss Ali Bishop – Year Five Mr Ross Lancaster – Instrumental Music I look forward to working with all of the staff as we work towards our key goals and priorities for this year. This year will certainly be another very exciting year for Eumundi with a range of new initiatives to be implemented. Our focus on curriculum will continue this year with a targeted focus on spelling. As mentioned in previous Newsmundis the ‘Word’s Their Way’ approach to spelling will be introduced to all classes across the school this year. ‘Words Their Way’ is a teacher-directed, student-centred approach to vocabulary growth and spelling development whereby students engage in a variety of sound, pattern and meaning activities, sorting pictures and words. It caters for differentiated learning in the classroom, rather than a one-size fits all solution. All teachers have been in-serviced in the WTW program and each class is currently commencing the implementation of the approach. As a parent you will see some differences in your child’s approach to learning how to spell, beginning with homework lists. As such we are moving away from the rote learning approach to spelling with teachers no longer requiring students to learn and recall lists of words. I am looking forward to seeing how this new program improves each child’s word knowledge. This year we also continue to implement the National Curriculum. For 2018 we will be focussed on implementing the Digital Technologies curriculum. In a world that is increasingly digitised and automated, it is critical to the wellbeing and sustainability of the economy, the environment and society, that the benefits of information systems are exploited ethically. This requires deep knowledge and understanding of digital systems (a component of an information system) and how to manage risks. Ubiquitous digital systems such as mobile and desktop devices and networks are transforming learning, recreational activities, home life and work. Digital systems support new ways of collaborating and communicating, and require new skills such as computational and systems thinking. These technologies are an essential problem-solving toolset in our knowledge-based society. Digital Technologies empowers students to shape change by influencing how contemporary and emerging information systems and practices are applied to meet current and future needs. A deep knowledge and understanding of information systems enables students to be creative and discerning decision-makers when they select, use and manage data, information, processes and digital systems to meet needs and shape preferred futures.

As a school we welcome the following new members of staff toEumundi for 2018:

Mrs Sarah McDonagh – Deputy Principal P-2 SectorMrs Kym Trewick – Head of CurriculumMrs Marissa East – Year OneMrs Amanda Frost – Year ThreeMrs Claudia Hansen – Year ThreeMiss Ali Bishop – Year FiveMr Ross Lancaster – Instrumental Music

I look forward to working with all of the staff as we work towardsour key goals and priorities for this year.

This year will certainly be another very exciting year for Eumundiwith a range of new initiatives to be implemented.

Our focus on curriculum will continue this year with a targetedfocus on spelling. As mentioned in previous Newsmundis the‘Word’s Their Way’ approach to spelling will be introducedto all classes across the school this year. ‘Words Their Way’is a teacher-directed, student-centred approach to vocabularygrowth and spelling development whereby students engagein a variety of sound, pattern and meaning activities, sorting

pictures and words. It caters for differentiated learning in theclassroom, rather than a one-size fits all solution. All teachershave been in-serviced in the WTW program and each class iscurrently commencing the implementation of the approach.

As a parent you will see some differences in your child’sapproach to learning how to spell, beginning with homeworklists. As such we are moving away from the rote learningapproach to spelling with teachers no longer requiring studentsto learn and recall lists of words. I am looking forward to seeinghow this new program improves each child’s word knowledge.

This year we also continue to implement the NationalCurriculum. For 2018 we will be focussed on implementing theDigital Technologies curriculum. ADMIN UpdateWelcome back to another busy year! Just a reminder toparents:

CURRICULUMI am very excited to be writing my first article for the newsletteras the new Head of Curriculum. I have been appointed to therole replacing Eumundi’s previous Head of Curriculum, JulieFitzsimon. I am very pleased to be joining the wonderful teamhere at Eumundi and am looking forward to my new roleworking with the students, staff and the school community tocontinue the great work that has come before me.

While new to the position at Eumundi as Head of Curriculum, Iam not new to Eumundi State School. I first came to Eumundias a class teacher in 2010 and taught Year 7 and Year 4classes from 2010 to 2014. For the first six months in 2015 Iwas a literacy coach here at Eumundi and for the remainderof that year worked as an English Advisor visiting a number ofschools across the North Coast Region. For the last two years Ihave worked at Tewantin State School as Head of Curriculum.

2018 will see a focus at Eumundi on spelling. Whileimplementing the spelling requirements of the AustralianCurriculum, teachers will further enhance their approach toteaching spelling through the Words their Way spellingprogram. Words their Way presents a developmental approachmaking word study more efficient and responsive to students’learning. Words their Way not only addresses spelling, it alsointegrates phonics and vocabulary. It involves the students‘doing’ things with words – examining, manipulating, comparingand categorising. This approach gives the students theopportunity to make their own discoveries about how wordswork. There will be more about how this program looks in theclassroom in future newsletters.

In previous years considerable work has been done at Eumundion the teaching of reading and Mathematics. In both areasteachers not only focus on ‘WHAT’ to teach, but ‘HOW’ toteach. This remains a focus as we continue to build uponand consolidate this work. Already teachers at Eumundi are

gathering data on each student’s understanding ofMathematics concepts that will be covered this term, throughadministering diagnostic tasks, which we call Show Me tasks.

Effective teachers of Numeracy use diagnostic assessment toprovide information ‘FOR’ planning and teaching. Diagnosticassessment is useful in identifying students’ misconceptions, revealing ‘gaps’ in learning and highlighting inefficiencies instudent practices and reasoning. The Show Me tasks are avaluable tool, used by teachers, to show students’misconceptions, inefficiencies and gaps in learning.

The Show Me diagnostics tasks are designed to be used asa pre-test at the commencement of each term. Data collectedfrom the diagnostics is analysed and this informs teacherplanning. Many questions in the Show Me task requireresponses that reveal thinking and reasoning. In fact, gettingthe correct answer in some questions does not necessarilyindicate that a student has deep understanding or efficientreasoning. The teacher uses the diagnostic as a tool to judgethe depth of a student’s understanding. When marking theShow Me tasks the teacher does not merely mark it as corrector incorrect, they look closely at a student’s response to eachquestion and ask:

It is through this careful consideration of student responses thatour teachers are able to identify misconceptions and possiblegaps in learning. Once misconceptions and possible gaps inlearning are identified, the teachers determine areas of focus, what students need to be taught in order to facilitateimprovement and then plan activities and utilise teachingstrategies to effectively improve student outcomes. Thediagnostics are then used as a post-test to measure gains overthe term.

The use of the Show Me tasks is just one example of how ourteachers focus on each individual student and what needs tobe learnt in order for them to achieve better learning outcomes.
