DOCTOR, I SUFFER Dr. Isaac Hourwich, the noted Yid
dish scholar, had a goatee and he looked exactly like Russian-Jewish doctors were expected to look.
One day, an old Jewish woman came to ·see him.
"Doctor," she complained, "I suffer the tortures of hell from my rheumatism. Would you please . . . "
"I'm sorry," Dr. Hourwich interrupted her, "but you've made a mistake, my dear woman. I 'm only a Doctor of Philosophy."
"Tell me, doctor," she murmured, "what kind of sickness is 'philosophy'?"

NATIONAL JEW!SH POST ENDORSES RABBI BRICKNER'S CALL FOR A
CONGRESS OF JEWISH INTELLECTUAL
Rabbi Barnett M . Brickner's latest call-this one for "an assemblage of thinkers who will clarify the direction which American Judaism is taking"should strike a responsive note. This is a problem which has been occupying the attent ion of U. S. Jewish leaders, lay and rabbinical, concerned with the healthy development of a creative American Judaism.
"We need badly a meeting of minds to formulate the basic principles of J ewish life in this generation ," the Cleveland rabbi says.
The Post is ready to go all the way in this call. The problem will be to convoke such a gathering. Too often a good idea like this one dies because the vested interests are afraid it might affect their autonomy;
The e are several possible approaches. A national Jewish organization like the B'nai B'rith could convoke such a putative body, or the Jewish Welfare Board might do it-or several of the national organizations might ocoperate on such a project.
Once the group meets, it should divorce itself entirely from any organization and proceed on its own.
There is no question about the need for such a meeting. Few will disagree about it. Whether anything fruitful will come of the suggestion will depend on American Jewish leadership.
JEWISH COMMUNITY COUNCIL STAGES 13th ANNUAL MEET
