Horizon 2020 intends to be challenge-driven and solutions-oriented. It is becoming increasingly evident that our economies and societies are too vulnerable to the impacts of climate change – including how we manage the key resource of water – and that we need to increase resilience to climate change while at the same time drastically cutting our CO2 emissions. In parallel, our natural resources and ecosystems are in crisis and risk being unable to provide us with the services we take for granted: clean air and water, recreational areas for leisure and relaxation, healthy forests that act as carbon sinks, productive soil… And we face a serious challenge in ensuring the sustainable supply and use of the raw materials that are crucial for our economies and way of life. Societal Challenge 5 ("Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials ") is about finding solutions to these challenges. Not just furthering our knowledge for the sake of knowledge – other parts of H2020 have that aim. But harnessing knowledge to come up with effective solu tions that can be put into practice. Call - Greening the economy in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Cities should become circular to : -alter urban consumption patterns and value chains -to stimulate innovation, business opportunities, and job creation New, flexible systemic urban planning instruments

for design and implementation of circular urban processes leading to regenerative urban and peri-urban areas

Demonstrating systemic urban development for circular and regenerative cities

Actions should demonstrate how cities can be transformed into centres of circular innovation and stimulate regenerative practices in both urban and peri-urban areas (including the surrounding industrial areas and commercial ports).

Develop & implement innovative urban planning (e.g. innovative governance and legislation enabling new practices, design approaches, business models, etc.) for transition to circular and regenerative cities (built environment, public space, urban spatial use).

Strengthening international cooperation on sustainable urbanisation: nature-based solutions for restoration and rehabilitation of urban ecosystems

The challenge is the Unsustainable, non-resilient urbanisation patterns, the expansion or neglect of urban areas that caused the fragmentation, biodiversity loss and the degradation of ecosystems and their services.

Actions (as part of integrated & ecologically urban planning) should design, construct, deploy NBS to restore and prevent further degradation, rehabilitate urban and peri-urban ecosystems and the ecological coherence and integrity of cities.

Visionary and integrated solutions to improve well-being and health in cities

Public spaces need to be designed and managed sustainably to ensure that the way citizens produce, consume, commute and interact within the urban fabric has a positive impact on their health and quality of life, enhances resilience to disasters and climate change and reduces the environmental footprint of the cities (Habitat III New Urban Agenda).
