Recognition & Appreciation

For their work in developing The Original 2:7 Series presently called The ETS Series, we are partic-

ularly grateful for the efforts of the Denver Navigator staff. Ron Oertli prayerfully and thoughtfully

put together the concept and its original layout. Bob Wilbraham and Bob Lovelace participated in

final field testing and in refining the material to its present form.

We also want to express our thanks to the many local church lay people who were trained during

the developmental stages of the series. They showed great patience and perseverance as various

changes were incorporated. A special thanks goes to those in the first three churches where the

materials were used. First Denver Friends Church, Valverde Presbyterian Church, and Bear Valley

Baptist Church.

Our prayer is that many local churches will find The ETS Series a useful tool for raising up trained

lay leadership for the cause of Jesus Christ.

You’re Under Way…

You’re off to a good start, having completedthe first unit of the Topical Memory System(Book 2: Live the New Life, 1-12). You havebegun to enjoy some of the benefits Scripturememory can bring. Now keep up yourmomentum as you tackle the next 12 verses(Book 3: Proclaim Christ, 1-12).

Study these instructions, then each weekread the comments under the About the Versesheading.

What to Expect

The Scripture memory instructions in

Book 2 mentioned three things Scripturememory can help you do – witness effectively, overcome anxiety and have victory in tempta-tion. In Book 3, you will learn 12 verses whichwill greatly contribute to your effectiveness inwitnessing.

Use the Buddy System

The Scriptures teach that “as iron sharpensiron, so one man sharpens another” (Proverbs27:17), and, “Two are better than one…If onefalls down, his friend can help him up”(Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). We all need encourage-ment in our Christian lives and this surelyapplies to memorizing Scripture.

The Goals of Book 2 were:

1. To experience a more consistent and meaningful quiet time by:a. combining meaningful Bible reading and prayer.b. succeeding in having 14 consecutive quiet times during the course.c. recording daily quiet time thoughts and how they impressed you on a Bible ReadingHighlights Record.

d. growing in ability to share key quiet time thoughts with others in the group during thecourse.

2. To quote accurately the five Scripture memory verses of Beginning with Christ (the fiveassurance verses).

3. To memorize the first 12 verses of the Topical Memory System successfully. (These 12 versesare correlated with theWheel Illustration.)

4. To study and discuss the booklet My Heart Christ’s Home.5. To have a half day of prayer after reading and discussing the booklet How to Spend a Day inPrayer.

6. To complete and discuss The Spirit-filled Christian as a participant in a Bible study group.7. To give a personal salvation testimony in less than four minutes, using notes from a 3” x 5”

card.

Ask someone else in your ETS group to gettogether with you outside class to help youreview your verses. You may also want to talkover any difficulties you are having, but aboveall share how God is using the verses in yourlives. This will help you succeed in Scripturememory.

Knowledge and Application

Some Christians confuse Bible knowledgewith spiritual maturity, assuming that knowingmore about the Bible automatically makes thembetter Christians. This is not necessarily true. The Pharisees knew the Old Testament, yetthey were spiritual reprobates. The key tospiritual maturity is application of God’s Word tolife.

The Apostle Paul addressed the Corinthianbelievers as fleshly, unspiritual babes in Christ. He had to feed them milk instead of solid spiri-tual food. They took pride in their wisdom andlogic, and could have understood the deepertruths Paul wanted to impart to them, but theirlives contradicted what they already knew.Jealousy and strife split their ranks and theybehaved like ordinary, unregenerate men. Theirlives were too much like those of the pagans inCorinth. What an indictment! They needed toapply the Word to their daily living.

Meditation – an Aid to Application

Meditation and application go together. In order to apply a truth of Scripture we need totake time to meditate on it and allow it to moldour thinking, but ours is a generation on the go.We scarcely take time to eat or sleep properly, let alone taking time for prayerful, reflectivethinking. So, we must plan for this time in orderto be the quality men and women God wants usto be. One purpose of this course is to teach youhow to make meditation a part of your life.

God promises great rewards to those whomeditate on His Word and apply it to their lives(read Joshua 1:8 and Psalm 1:2-3). A key toDavid’s success is found in his statement,“I have considered my ways and have turned mysteps to Your statutes” (Psalm 119:59).

Concentration Helps Memory

When memorizing a verse, give it your wholeattention. Your complete concentration isnecessary for the verse to make a clear and deepimpression on your mind. Satan will do all hecan to distract you from memorizing. Ask theLord to help you concentrate.1. If you are tired or sleepy as you begin your

memory work, take a walk or drink a cupof coffee. The long-term answer, of course,is to get more sleep or to schedule yourmemory work for a time when you aremore alert.

2. Distracting noise also interferes withconcentration. Find a time and place inwhich noise and distractions are at aminimum.

3. Emotional tensions – worry, fear, resentment, frustration, depression – can slow downlearning as much as physical tensions. If these are present, confess them to theLord and ask Him to quiet your heart.

Visualize the Verse

We remember pictures more easily thanwords or concepts. If you find it difficult toconnect a particular verse with its topic andreference, try forming a mental picture of theverse based on its context, content, or someother feature that will help you remember. Thepicture can become the mental hook you uselater to draw the verse from your memory. It helps if you make the image as unusual orstriking as possible.

The Topical Memory SystemYou have already learned the first 12 verses of the Topical Memory System, which make up the seriesBook 2: Live the New Life. The four remaining series of verses are: Book 3: Proclaim Christ;Book 4: Rely on God’s Resources; Book 5: Be Christ’s Disciple; and Book 6: Grow in Christlikeness.

In this book, you will memorize the second 12 verses, which include key Scriptures to use inexplaining the Gospel to others:

Book 3: Proclaim ChristAbundant Life John 10:10Sin Isaiah 53:6Death Romans 6:23Judgement Hebrews 9:27Hell Revelation 20:15Grace Ephesians 2:8-9God’s Remedy Romans 5:8Christ Paid the Penalty 1 Peter 3:18Repent Mark 1:15Believe John 1:12Receive Revelation 3:20Eternal Life John 5:24

The following are topics and references for the memory verses you have already learned in The ETSSeries. Along with the above 12 verses, you should have these well in hand by the end of this book. You have accomplished a great deal toward memorizing God’s Word and having it available to use inyour own life and in helping others.

Take the verses in Book 2 on witnessing,Matthew 4:19 and Romans 1:16, for example.Associate the first verse with Jesus and thesecond with Paul. Picture Jesus standing on abeach by the Sea of Galilee. Two fishermen aretending their nets when Jesus calls out, “Come.follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”Fix this scene in your mind. Associate thepicture with the topic of witnessing and with thereference Matthew 4:19.

Paul didn’t write the book of Romans fromRome, but since it was to the believers there, you might picture Paul standing in the RomanForum or Colosseum crying out to the pagan

citizens, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvationof everyone who believes: first for the Jew, thenfor the Gentile.” Associate this picture with thetopic of witnessing and with the referenceRomans 1:16.

Visualizing a verse helps especially if you findit difficult to remember by ordinary means.

Self-Checking Quiz

A self-checking quiz on these instructionsand your weekly memory work will be taken inBook 4.

One of the most beneficial reasons formemorizing Scripture verses is that it allows usto meditate on their contents. During thiscourse you will be doing an exercise (pages10-16) to increase your ability to meditate onpassages of Scripture.

An important part of your Scripturememory program should be meditating onverses you have learned. Not only will thisenable you to retain them in your memory withaccuracy, but as you reflect on and considertheir contents, you will receive challenges, encouragement, and motivation for victory oversin. Remember God’s instruction to Joshua:“Do not let this Book of the Law depart fromyour mouth; meditate on it day and night, sothat you may be careful to do everythingwritten in it. Then you will be prosperous andsuccessful.” (Joshua 1:8)

Continual review is the key to having a graspon the verses you already have learned. Anexcellent goal you could establish would be toknow your memory verses so well by the end ofBook 3 that you can not only quote themaccurately, but also quickly list the specifictopics under all the verses you’ve studied thusfar. Plan not only to accomplish your memoryassignments each week in Book 3, but also to setaside special times when you can quote thetopics and references of all the verses you havelearned.

Scripture memory and meditation is astrategic part of the discipleship training inwhich you are involved. You will be feeding yoursoul and laying a foundation for future spiritualgrowth as you dwell on the contents of theseclassic verses. You will then agree with thepsalmist: “Oh, how I love Your law! I meditateon it all day long.” (Psalm 119:97)
