A Newsletter for the Members and Friends of Bethesda Presbyterian Church

Dear Friends, How you say thank you?

Some people send notes. Other people offer gifts made in their kitchen. Some folk send text messages. There are so, so many ways to say thank you.

Over the years saying thanks or thank you has become something of a heart felt necessity for me. My mamma told me to be polite. My God re-quires that thankfulness be a part of the Christin life. I compare it to breathing. Thankfulness is all about that ahh moment. The breath that we breathe in is wonderful and the exhaling is just as awesome. It does take both actions to be complete.

Now it is time for me to say goodbye. So goodbye. But the expression would not be complete without my saying thanks for being your very best selves.

One of my most favorite songs is “Give Thanks”

Give thanks with a grateful heart Give thanks to the Holy One

Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son Give thanks with a grateful heart

Give thanks to the Holy One Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son

And now let the weak say, "I am strong" Let the poor say, "I am rich

Because of what the Lord has done for us" And now let the weak say, "I am strong"

Let the poor say, "I am rich Because of what the Lord has done for us"

We give thanks to You. Songwriters: Henry Smith

DIMES FOR HUNGER

Dimes for Hunger is one of the collaborative ministries of Providence Presbytery. Working together since 1977, we

have collected $1,537,019. Half has gone to agencies in the five counties of Providence Presbytery that help those who

are hungry. Half has gone to projects in Honduras, Guatema-la and Malawi to help those who are hungry.

100% of the offering goes to help the Hungry! How will we respond to Christ’s call this year?

Health Cabinet Dr. James Shaw shared helpful information and answered questions about

different skin cancers at our recent Health Cabinet meeting He showed

pictures of ordinary moles compared to the the ABC's of Melanomas, the

most malignant form of skin cancers, In addition to changes in size shape

and color, he said to take note of anything that is "funny looking." Have

someone take a picture on your phone if you feel something unusual but can

not see it then go and get it checked.

Melanomas can occur anywhere in the body (under finger nails and even on

the bottom of feet.) One that is the size of an pencil eraser can increase and

spread within six weeks time.

Skin cancers are the most common cancers and treatment for skin cancers

has improved. A study of cancer skin cells and targeting the cells at the

cellular level is the preferred method of treatment and offers the most prom-

ising cure.

Use sunscreen 30 SPF everyday and avoid tanning booths---- two important

ways to reduce risk of skin cancers.

Dr Shaw ended by saying "the sun is not our friend re-

garding sun burn and skin damage. "

We thank Dr. Shaw for sharing reminders to pay attention

to our skin.

REPORT FROM PASTER NOMINATING COMMITTEE

Dear Congregation, We wish to thank those of you who attended the Congregational Engagement Event May 19,2019. It was a very successful event. Thank you for coming and for participating and most importantly for the input you provided to the PNC. A lot has been happening since then. We took your input and other information gathered and factored it in to our Ministry Information Form. It took us the month of May through the first week of June to finalize the MIF and get it approved by the Ses-sion and the Presbytery. Our MIF went live on the Presbytery’s automated system in June and soon we began receiving Personal In-dividual Forms of pastoral candidates matched to Bethesda’s criteria. There was a bit of a hiccup at first in receiving additional applications after the initial batch. But we were able to figure out logistics and we learned in June that there are over 200 Personal Information Forms matching Bethesda’s criteria. Also, in addition to the matched forms, we have received a number of self-referrals from applicants who have specifi-cally expressed interest in Bethesda. Our committee has been meeting weekly for two hours or more to review and discuss prospective candidates and their information. Before our meetings each committee member individually has reviewed each candi-date and taken time to listen to online sermons to the extent that these are available. We have learned thus far that this is a very deliberate and time-consuming process. It is also a very prayerful process. We are working diligently yet we realize that it is going to take some time, probably more time than either you or we originally anticipated. We want you to know that, as the Apostle, Paul, said in his letter to the Philippians, we are of one-mind and one accord. We want to find and select with God’s help and your approval, the best possible candidate for Bethesda, the one God has called to be Bethesda’s next pastor. We ask that you continue to pray for us and Bethesda as we proceed with the search and pray that God’s will for this church will be accomplished. THANK YOU, Pastor Nominating Committee Patricia Geddings, Angie Guy, Johnny Deal, Bill Nettles and Jane Clyburn

Choir + Plus and Pioneer Club 2019-2020

Dear Parents of Preschoolers through 12th Graders, 2019/20 We are gearing up for another great year of Pioneer Club and Choir Plus! The programs will be on Wednesdays starting September 4th. Your child can participate in just one or both of these programs (see times and ages below). After-school bus pick up is available from local schools (CES, PTH, CMS) depending on sufficient interest. Schedule includes supervised playground and snack time prior to the start of programs. Snack fee for the year is $10 for one child and $5 for each additional child from the same family.

Pioneer Club. . . Children from 3K- 12thgrade are divided into five groups by age and grade. Each week this Christ-centered program integrates spiritual and personal development to help boys and girls build healthy relationships with adults, peers and, most importantly, Christ. Weekly Bible study, meaningful Scripture memory, and fun life-skills activities make each meeting memorable and full of variety. Many people describe it as “like VBS but during the school year”! Supply fee is $25 per child with a $60 family max (fee helps to cover club shirt, handbook, badges, materi-als, special events).

Older Pioneers (4th-12th): 3:15-4:30 PM Younger Pioneers (3K-3rd): 4:30 -5:30 PM

Choir Plus. . . Children are divided into three groups by age and grade. They learn vocal and music skills using songs and hymns based on scripture and Christian tradition. They gain a greater understanding of God's word and their own ability to contribute to the life and worship of the church. The choirs sing in church on some Sundays throughout the school year and participate in a musical production each semester. Younger Choir Plus (5K-3rd): 3:15– 4:15PM Older Choir Plus (4th-7th): 4:30 – 5:30 PM Upper Choir (8th grade and up): 5:30-6:15 Please return the registration form and fees to the Bethesda church office before the end of August. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

What a busy, wonderful and spiritual summer we are having here at Bethesda Presbyterian Church! Our children and youth have been busy with all kinds of wonderful, fun-filled activities and events this sum-mer….MONTREAT High School Camp, Centrifuge/Mission Fuge Camp, VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Life is WILD, God is Good…just to name a few. We had a wonderful worship service on June 30th where we highlighted VBS! I would be remiss if I did not say “BIG THANK YOU to ALL OF YOU” who have vol-unteered (or helped out whether physically, prayerfully, or financially) your time to help chaperone an event or help with one or more of the above mentioned events/activities. Not everyone knows who you are….but I do, and more importantly, God knows. THANK YOU for the important role YOU play in making Bethesda Church such a fun, active, safe, and spiritual place for our youth and children during these summer months.

Lisa’s Letter

Greetings to you and goodbyes to summer 2019! As we look forward to a break in the heat in the upcoming months, we also are gearing up for the kickoffs of our fall activities and programs!

Bethesda’s Roar Vacation Bible School ministered to over 155 children and their families. We had just over 100 adult and youth volunteers serving as the hands and feet of Christ to create the awesome week. The famous (or infamous) pie-in-the-face competition brought in a record-breaking $2,635.84 for our global mission project, ‘The First Thousand Days’! World Vision and Group VBS’s Operation Kid-to-Kid joined forces to help families in Zambia. These funds were sent to target the first thousand days of life of babies by providing prenatal and postnatal care of children and also parental education. We wrapped up the week by inviting the children and their families to join us on the following Sunday for a VBS worship service in the gym. It was wonderful to be able to share with the rest of the Bethesda congregation some of our special week. Bethesda can be very proud of the support this church gives to such a vital ministry for children of this church and this community. It is truly an amazing and blessed week!

We are sad that WinShape Day camp did not return to our county this year, but we have re-searched and visited a new local opportunity called Victory Sports Camp. If they continue this day camp next year, it will be a great option for our children to get fun physical activity and spiritual nourishment/growth. We are always keeping our eye out for community events and activities that will help our children flourish in their faith. Stay tuned!

LOOKING FORWARD: August 7th; 1-3 pm= Wacky Water Wednesday for Elementary children (preschool children wel-come with parents). Slip ‘n Slide, Inflatable water slide, popsicles, and water games… a wonder-ful wet wacky wild Wednesday! August 18th; 9 AM= Rally Day! Join us in Westminster Hall as we kick off the Fall semester and new Sunday School year! September 4th= Pioneer Club and Choir Plus kicks off!
